Warp3D and PCI Graphics Boards
Recently Hans-Jörg Frieden has expressed himself in our
forum regarding the topic driver
software for PCI graphics boards under Warp3D:
«Unfortunately the number of e-mails regarding Warp3D and PCI cards
accumulates for Thomas and me. Almost every time it is "I have purchased a card
of the brand XXX, when will you have 3D drivers ready?"...
Regarding this I want to say the following: Warp3D is and will continue to be a hobby project
that is cooking on smaller flame as for now, because of the time consumption
of Hyperion. If possible we'll write drivers. Nevertheless I will explicitly
point out, that the buying of a graphics card is no cogent reason for us to produce a
driver for it - as that takes quite some time. There will probably be no
driver for Voodoo 5 (V4 is questionable but more likely), none for GeForce, Riva TNT,
ATI Rage or whatever else, especially when there exists no chip documentation.
Neither we will attempt to recycle a Linux driver.
In the case that somebody could get some chip documentation (legal!) and make it
available for us the chances for a driver increase but this is no guarantee
either.»
Via email Hans-Joerg adds that this is no kind of arbitrariness but only a
hint that people shouldn't waste their money for graphics cards that can't be
supported simply because of the lack of time or documentation...
We are getting mails all the time from people asking for GeForce support or
Voodoo 5 but for those documentation isn't accessible. We have tried it even at
NVidia, without success, even not against NDA... :-(

plugin runs on AmigaOS V3.0+.
The following bugs were fixed:
Payback Status Report #17
On 30. December 2000 James Daniels has released the status report #17 regarding
the game 'Payback'. The game now offers additionally a multiplayer deathmatch
mode for up to 4 players. To do this much had to be changed in the source code
and therefor much work had to be put into this mode as the game wasn't design
for supporting a multiplayer mode first. But the work was, according to James
Daniels, worth it. Screens of the multiplayer mode are released on the screenshots page.
The latest photos there also contain the improved textures.
Besides that the game now supports also the CD32 controller, and several bugs
have been fixed.

Amiga Sound Standards and How to Destroy Them (Part 1)
Joern Plewka wrote:
In the past Katodev had to fight the fact that internally there wasn't enough
menpower available. That's why it was impossible for us to participate in
certain discussions. The things that head towards us now (criticism about
AMPlifier) is from our point of view hard and "generated".
Katodev and others are trying to support all of the existing standards those
usable from concept. We'd like to point out that the mpeg.device has been
released 1993 by Commodore (picture and sound). All cards with hardware
MPEG-support that were released after that have used this driver. CD32-FMV,
Peggy+, Melody-Z2, Melody1200 series and also the Delfina series.
For the later even the source code is available on Aminet. Those who are
now still not capable of writing a correct driver for their hardware should
simply ask for help or make their hardware layout available for everyone!
AMPlifier supports this standard. Those who create a driver for their hardware
can use this software unlicensed. AMPlifier is part of OS3.9 or available on
our homepage (unrestricted shareware) in Rev. 2.21. Those who don't like the
software should write their own, but please support the standards! (ps)
Silversurfer does NOT Work with Melody1200
Joern Plewka wrote:
Since the Cologne fair previous to this year's fair the Silversurfer in it's
original state doesn't work correctly with Melody1200 since the complete
clockport is blocked, which is in contradiction with what the manufacturer
states at his homepage. This information isn't even available to users when
they ask for support. Katodev is fed up with fixing Silversurfers without
complaining, by now. Currently it seems that even the software does NOT work
with Melody1200 anymore.
If Silversurfer and Melody1200 can't work together simultaneoulsy it means
that Melody can die from bus-collisions, sooner or later. Please get a guaranty
on purchase that Silversurfer does the things you require or use Twister1200.
This makes you preventing a lot of anger, port and time for you and us.
We have reconstructed the layout of the Silversurfer now. This shows that the
IRQ runs over a diode. Those having problems due to this "trick" should
replace the diode by a transistor (e.g. BS170). (ps)

VirusHelp Denmark: New Informationen on New Trojan
I have received some new info about the new trojan that was found
on the 27'th of December. It is spread in an archive with the name
"dcs-4k.lha". But the demo group have nothing to do with this new
trojan. We have also been told that it is a guy from England and
that he also made the "dkg-blum.lha" trojan, his name and address is
known to Virus Help Denmmark. Thanks to Mikko for the new info.
Here once more the full information on the new archive (we had posted
these on 12/27/2000 already):
Today we received a new 'lame' trojan. This trojan will delete your
"sys:" if you run the program. At this time non of the anti-virus
programs can detect this trojan, but in the next update they will
be known.
The cure right now (If you have lost your SYS: to bad......), then
you will have to try and get the files back with eg. DiskSalv,
AB-Tools or VT-Schutz.
Picasso96 Driver for Mediator
Sufficient demand for Picasso96 drivers for Mediator provided, that is about 300 registered
users (specify Mediator for purpose when registering), in case of need we will purchase
a complete developer- and test-system with our own funds, and then create own drivers
for diverse PCI graphics boards. This drivers will then be of quality known form
us.
But Elbox mentioned to us that they already would have shipped two systems to Germany for other
driver development (CGX). Well, it would be in our terms to provide us one of these. To charge
UPS with delivery cannot cost the world.....
Another problem would be accessing the API of the Mediator system's pci.library. Elbox provides
this only for NDA, though they don't feel themselves to be bound to such concinnities, see their
unauthorized Voodoo3-P96 driver...
If they would refuse us to access this, of course this would raise a certain problem which could
lead to slightly delays.
Supplement 12-29-2000:
Tobias Abt via eMail:
Afterwards we got the information that this developer system provided to the CGX team was
distributed by Vesalia, but financed by Elbox.

The Secret of Mount Monkey - a Canceled Devotee-Adventure
Sebastian Beloch wrote:
This project was started in 1998, but was canceled in the meantime. This demo version includes
complete intro and parts of the first level (not playable). THE SECRET OF MOUT MONKEY is an
adventure game in style of the old classic adventures by Lucas-Arts (e.g. Monkey Island, Indiana Jones,
Day of the Tentacle, ....). The game combines the characters of these games building a new adventure game.
Guybrush Threepwood's daughter accepts the bid of Simon The Sorcerer to save the world, and has to
supply several ingredients for his magic potion. She travels to foreign islands (MONKEY ISLAND), visits
the Maniac Manison (DAY OF THE TENTACLE), stumbles into the comic strip worlds of Sam & Max as well as
Leisure Suit Larry...
The demo in graphics strongly abutes to the old adventure games and is a must for all those who loves adventures.

iBrowse News
Middle of December on the support forum of iBrowse, which was hosted by
www.senduptheflares.com/
and now doesn't exist no more it was to read that Stefan Burstroem, author of iBrowse
has got a full time job, cause he wasn't able to exist from what he gains from iBrowse, any more.
Here the original message form the HiSoft forum:
«Unfortunately, after many, many years of hard work on iBrowse, Stefan
Burstroem (the author of iBrowse) has been forced to get a full-time job.
The revenues coming in from iBrowse sales simply are not enough to support
worldwide marketing plus a salary for the author.
Although Stefan remains committed to iBrowse and the Amiga, it is difficult
to see how he can take the product forward without help. And, even then, I
cannot see how enough revenue will come to pay the people involved.
Please let me know if any of you have any ideas how this problem can be
solved. David»
On the iBrowse product page at Hisoft (see title link) it is mentioned that
it is absolute necessary to have a look at the demo version of iBrowse before
registering, to be sure that the browser fulfils your needs. According to Hisoft
so much changes have happened to the internet, that Amiga browser cannot keep up,
any more.
Here the original text:
«The latest version of the Amiga's premier web browser.
Note that the Internet has moved on and the Amiga has not kept up, so some
modern websites are not accessible on the Amiga because they require software
that is not available for the Amiga. Therefore, before you purchase an
iBrowse 2 keyfile please ensure that you have downloaded the evaluation version
and satisfied yourself that iBrowse 2.2 is suitable for your requirements.»
Conclusion: At this time further development of iBrowse is not to expect. But at
eGroups still a discussion forum for iBrowse users is available:

Unfortunately the deadline for further development was set too short.
By this we want to wish all of our customers, suppliers and business friends a merry Christmas and

Makers of Exodus Taken In by Swindler
Fun Time World wrote:
«The makers of the game "Exodus - Tha Last War" apparently were taken by a swindler.
Mariuz Samson (Exodus) voiced on this problem in an
article on the homepage of the
Polish magazine eXec. The person in question, whose name
wasn't mentioned, has also been responsible for the server problems due to which it partly was
very difficult to download the demo version from the page. Similar problems also happened with
e-mails which didn't always arrive. For the alleged hacker attack also the person in question
has been responsible. Unfortunately the swindler was also able to read the e-mails sent to the
group and possibly answered some of those.
If you happened to receive an e-mail with a reply-to address different from the following, so this one

Back to the Roots Amiga-News 226
Christmas is near and again another year has passed. Therefore
"Back to the Roots" (http://www.back2roots.org) brings you
some nice presents in form of some wonderful classic Amiga
games - as always for free and with permission!
The companies Dynamix and Digital Integration are supporting
our project now, too so the flight simulations Red Baron,
F-16 Combat Pilot and Tornado are now online. Also the great
adventure games Space Quest 1 (the remake!), Colonel's Bequest,
Code name: Iceman and others like Thunderhawk, Wonder Dog, Vroom
and Warhead!
There are interviews with the legendary Scene-musicians "Jester/
Sanity" and "Clawz/Bomb" online, too! Both are telling some
interesting news, not only for music lovers.
As usual there were also tons of Scene-demos, pictures and
modules from Amiga games and the demo scene added.
We'd like to thank all our visitors for their support during

who helped us to keep the classic stuff alive. We wish you

Amiga Extreme takes a break
«Amiga Extreme will be closing for a while. This is because I feel
that I don't have the motivation to continue the site, and the fact that there's almost
nothing to post, I don't see much of a point in updating. There are better sites for that
(Amiga.org and Czech Amiga News for example).
Once again, this is not the end, it's just the end for Amiga Extreme on the classic platform.
The next time Amiga Extreme will open is when the AmigaONE release is closing in on us and when there's
some real news for the new platform. I'm already working on a new design and have lots of ideas for
the new AE.
Also, the e-mail addresses will still be up, so you can mail me at syke@amigaextreme.com.

Today we received a new 'lame' trojan. This trojan will only execute
it self if you have named your hard-disk "DH0" & "DH1". The trojan
is spread in and archive with the name "DKG-BLUM.LHA". If you run
the "DKG-BLUM.exe", the trojan will replace your c:loadwb with
another loadwb (size: 3560 bytes) and replace c:assign with another
assign (size: 2408 bytes), and the screen will tell you that there
is not enough memory, and you will have to restart, then it looks
like the trojan will delete DH1:.
The trojan also adds or replaces 2 other files, "LIBS:asi.library"
& "DEVS:ASI.device".
The cure right now (If you have lost your DH1: to bad......), then
replace the trojan files with clean ones, here is the trojan sizes:
c:loadwb ( 3560 bytes)
c:assign ( 2408 bytes)
libs:asi.library (24548 bytes - delete if you dont have clean file)
devs:asi.device ( 2408 bytes - delete if you dont have clean file)

Heise: Background details: Microsoft are Stricken
«Crippled due to the cartel case, tantalized by cracker's attacks, and trailed by the general
downwards trend of the PC branch the software giant from Redmond now starts to paddle hectically.
Because the signs are indicating storm: For the first time after ten years and for the second time
in the company's history at all Microsoft had to call out a profit caution for the current quarter.
PC sales in the otherwise so opulent Christmas business are stagnating worldwide, thus the best
income source stops bubbling the way Bill Gates' crew was used to. After all, almost a third of volume of
sales Microsoft draws from the fact that vendors sell PC's along with Windows or other products by Microsoft.»

Even if it might never happen and MorphOS assumedly would be the better choice, so it might be interesting
with Fleecy Moss' statements there in mind for once to consider the "50,000-copies"-edge to be the promise of a solid
4.0 PPC under active headship by Amiga Inc. Contrary to the suspicion this might only be an unsocial lure
to gain more income, cause I initially took it by this, too.
It's a pity that always only hard discussions and impeachment generate clarifying answers from Amiga Inc. or
other companies. In this case regarding the 50,000 copies promise.»

SEGA in the red
(Irina Srebot) - Since the introduction of the Dreamcast console, the former hope
becomes a millstone round the company's neck. The Japanese company faces a financial
dilemma. Sega expects for the current financial year a loss of 193 million Euro.
Despite price reductions to stay competitive with Sony's Playstation 2, there's
no hope for a change. Analysts recommend Sega to concentrate on developing software.
Since March 2000, Sega sold profitably 30.2 million games.(ps)
Supplement 12-16-2000:
Accidently we coughed an elder message. On 12-12-2000
Heise reported that
contrary to what many experts expected Dreamcast sells very well after the release of
Playstation 2. So according to the manufacturer around Thanksgiving sells increased of 85% percent
compared to sells of the week before. Also Sega would profit from Sony's delivery problems in the case
of Playstation 2, said Peter Moore, president of Sega USA, in an interview with the news service CNET
on the Jupiter Entertainment Conference in Los Angeles, yesterday.

Trouble with Defective Crusoe Processors
NEC calls back notebooks
Shortly after notebooks with the Transmeta processor went on sale, they make negative
headlines. Because of defective chips, NEC calls back the sold notebooks.
NEC shipped the new notebooks La Vie XM. 284 in Japan for only a few days, now
they were called back because of defective processors. According to Transmeta,
the fault has already been fixed, the devices run without problem. Probably a
reaction to the defective chips: the stock market value of the processor manufacturer
dropped by 5.06 US$. Apparently, defective chips have also been built into the new
Sony Picture Books Vaio PCGCi VE. Other than NEC, the Japanese company does not
plan to call back the computers. An exact number of affected devices is not known
yet. US media speak of about 13,000. Sony offers free exchange of the notebooks if
difficulties with installing Windows appear.

Think-pad without Crusoe
IBM will not bring note-books with the Crusoe processor by Transmeta to the market.
On detailed reasons the company keeps silent.
The official statement from IBM said the processor would not fit to the current
marketing concept. The decision not to equip think-pads with this processor is
a bad blow for Transmeta. An unfavourable timing, because from November the
company's shares shall be deald in Nasdaq. Senior analyser Peter Glaskowsky from
Microdesign Resources assumes that IBM wouldn't like to use the processor due to the
bad performance. Testings with Sony note-books would have turned out that a Crusoe
processor 700MHz would not be faster than an Pentium 233MHz, Glaskowsky added.

With Amiga to the Diploma
By this I would like to officially thank everybody who guided and supported my during
my studies to become a graduate engineer for media technics. To everybody who suffered
from my lack of time I would like to say thank you for your understanding.
As my final year project substantially deals with Amiga I would not withdraw it from
the public. It is available for download on my homepage (German):
The subject of the project is:
Conception and implementation of an automated control for a monitor-wall under technical
and marketing political aspects. Automation bases on an ARexx script controlling several
applications running non an Amiga 1200. For creation of software my special thanks go to:
Rico Schreckenbach
Stefan Robl
Karlheinz Marks
Stefan Steppat
To continue this project placing of some hardware for MPEG video display would be necessary.
As e.g. the related module for the CD32 isn't available any more, for this new projects
as like as Mediator might be addressed as a solution.
With this technic and our software an arrangement could be designed and delivered that would
be unique in the event branch.
With this the most efficient and moreover cheapest device of it's kind would be created. Well now, dear
hardware developers: don't let them detain or discourage you. THANK YOU.

Nursery School ?
As I learned the IRC conferences organized by UGN and conducted by the Amiga-Club didn't
went off as without a hitch as I said in my show report. Script-kiddies didn't have better
things to do as to flood the channel with multilating scripts, so some of the panned IRC
conferences had be interrupted or could not take place, at all. UGN was already thinking of
never again to organize conferences from shows.
To people not able to attend a show the IRC conferences always were an appreciated possibility
to get actual information, and most of all the only opportunity to address their questions
directly to the VIP's of the branch.
Therefore I appeal to the scrip-kiddies to grow up at last and to stop their nursery school
behavior.

Trogladite Awards - Subtotal
Every year Trogsoft gives an awards for each of the categories application, games, hardware,

In category application at this time ´YAM´ is ahead, ´Heretic 2´ in games, ´Mediator´
in hardware, ´MorphOS´ and ´Hyperion´ close up in development, and in websites ´Czech Amiga
News´ is ahead closely followed by ´amiga-news.de´.
The World of Amiga 2000 from December, 9th to 10th, which was organized by
Haage & Partner, was branded by the vending start of
the new AMIGA OS3.9, which according to the vendors sold brilliant on the fair.
The show took place inside the really imposing building of Cologne's Mediapark 7 on about 300 m² room.
For this show were organized within shortest time this event was attended very well with an amount of
about 1500 visitors (note: own estimation). Seminars were held in the opposite building Mediapark 6. The first
day of the fair Saturday was stamped by active crowd, while on Sunday it was rather unhurried, cause of only half
as full as on the day before.
Before I start describing the highlights of the show I want to put across to every reader that I personally
again liked this fair very much. I'm always exited about the cheerful and personal atmosphere. As already
in Neuss an amazing amount of international attendants had come to the show. I've met and spoken to
people from England, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Belgium, France, and Spain. The visitors had visible
fun and where impressed by the many different presentations. Everywhere crowds of interested viewers got together.
Disappointment only dispersed caused by the fact that Bill McEwen didn't attend the show;
short- termed and insuspendable deadlines kept him from coming to Cologne. Fleecy Moss, Vice President
and Chief of Development, but provided for incredulous astonishment by stating there must be at least
50,000 copies of AMIGA OS3.9 sold, to be able to do OS4.0. As for this time nobody thinks this to be
possible his statement was taken for a clear No for OS4.0.
As already in Neuss amiga-news.de together with the
Amiga-Club im BTX & Internet was present with an
own booth. From our editorial staff were on the fair: Dirk Baeyens,
Tomás J. Cantó, Torsten Dudai, Ruediger Engel, Guido Fehst, Eric Gillé,
Martina Jacobs, Rolf Tingler, and me truly. Nico Barbat was also on the show, but of course was very
busy at his own booth (Falke-Verlag). Rolf inspired the visitor with his
airbrushing skills.
We enjoyed to get in close contact with the readers and numerous dialogues convinced us to have high
acknowledgment for our work, and encouraged us to continue to spend our free time for this project.
Especially intensive and interesting were the dialogues with editors of other news services, as like
Andrea Vallinotto from diff.org (ItalY), Adrian Sweeney from
amigaglobe.com (Irland), Ian Maack from
amiga.dk (Denmark), Sebastian Brylka from
Fun Time World (Germany), and Mark Hinton
and Russell Trent from AmigActive (England).
Along this I would like to say thank you very much for the many kind compliments regarding our news service.
The Amiga-Club provided the people not able to attend the show with actual pictures from the fair, and
cared for trouble-free UGN IRC chats. Traditional the club members answered our questions, and helped
solving one or the other user's problem.
Also this time Michael Schaefer and Dennis Pauler from
Virtual Dimension were busy with their video camera to
create informing show videos. They did many interviews, and over and over made the microphone sure to work,
cause on the last fair the microphone failed completely, which sure was half a disaster.
Trade and the big ones of the branch were present with their own booths - as a matter of fairness this
time in alphabetical order or vice versa:
In talks with the exhibitors it became clear that - almost unisonous - they all came with mixed feelings,
but against what they expected the visitors were joyfully buying. Trade overall voiced positive about
sales.
Almost at all of the above mentioned booths presentations of different software and hardware took
place which I will describe without special order. So for example Peter Hoffmann, Stefan Sommerfeld,
and Juergen Rebensdorf from
Aliendesign introduced their new sound card
´Repulse´, which can be used with every Amiga with Zorro-II expansion. The sound card
offers sampling rates from 8 to 48 kHz, including 44.1 kHz and 96 kHz S/P-Diff, and supports
16, 18, 20, and 24 Bit (S/P-DIF) sampling frequence in mono or stereo.
New at individual computers was the ISDN-Surfer Zorro card which was to purchase either with or
without OVP. The announced products ´Lyra´ (adapter to use WindowsTM keyborads with Amiga),
and ´Buddha Flash MK2´ unfortunately were not finished, but probably will be available before
Christmas.
Dirk Conrad introduced his MAS-Player which is distributed by
Eternity. The MPEG-Player is a small piece of hardware looking like a serial plug. The player can
play MP3 files already on a machine only equipped with a 68000 68k processor. HiFi quality is around
18 Bit / 44 kHz. Since the WoA 2000 AmigaAMP is supported.
At the booth of Hyperion the attendants were able to admire a prototype of the G-Rex PCI board
by DCE with Voodoo3 graphics board on action. With this system
Heretic II really looked smooth, it was fast and the lightning effects were wonderfully visible.
Users can look forward to better speed and nice graphics. The boards are planned to be finished end
of December 2000.
Of course we yet asked for the projects under construction at Hyperion, and summarized the answers as
follows:
Shogo: Hans-Joerg and Thomas Frieden are working on the Amiga version which presumably will be
finished end of January 2001.
Freespace: On the port of this space shooter Steffen Haeuser and
Matthias Roslund are working. It is planned to finished 1Q/2001.
Majesty: Stephan Rusdorf and Thomas Frieden are busy porting this
fantasy strategy game which includes roll game elements. It is expected to be finished 2Q/2001.
Die Voelker (Alien Nations): Harry Sintonen is working on the port of this popular build-up and
strategy game, which is a big success similar to Siedler.
SIN: Steffen Haeuser and Peter Annuss are working on the port of the 3D shooter.
The game will presumably be finished 1Q/2001.
Hyperion will also port the 3D software ´Realsoft 3D´ by Realsoft to the
Amiga! With this software comparable to ´Cinema3D´ or ´Reflections´
the Amiga users will get a 3D modelling tool more extended and modern than anything else released
before.
Eyetech together with Martin Schueler from
Escena introduce the plans for the AmigaOne
machine. It was shown on diagrams how the system will look like. The 68k emulation is being developed
by Haage & Partner.
At Eternity Tales of Tamar was presented - Martin Wolf's
favourite project. In the meantime the world map and cities have been enabled. Still intense online
tests are running and the beta testers are really sold on the game. Initial bigger beta test are planned
for 2Q/2001.
Also at Eternity EASys!
by Tom Neidhardt was presented. The current update offers improvements like e.g. a built-in start menu,
OS3.9 menu support and alignment. Other changes: the archive manager now supports XPK; the menus are
structured better, and extend of menus is scalable, and moreover the buggy installation of the previous
version has been fixed, hence a trouble-less installation is possible, yet.
Eternity moreover presented a PC (Eternity 1) basing on 1 GHz (Tunderbird processor by AMD), equipped with
gigabyte board, 128 MB DIMM -133, Ge-Force II graphics board 32 MB DD-RAM, Catweazel controller, 52x CD-ROM drive,
20 GB Quantum HD, two PC floppy drives (one of them connected to the Catweasel), as well as a sound card 128 Bit
PCI. The gag of this PC is a perfectly pre-installed UAE under Windows. This way one gets a fast PC, and
an AMIGA at the speed of 68040/60.
During an interview with Andreas Magerl and Georg Breitsprecher from
Amiga Future and APC&TCP
Mr. Magerl stated that financing of the now self-produced print magazine
´Amiga Future´ finally is safe. Number of orders still isn't 100% satisfying, but a huge layout enhancement
would attract more orders. I've seen the new layout and I can confirm it to be a difference like night and day. :-)
Andreas Kuessner from WK-Artworks presented
´Taifun´, the successor of ´WildFire´. Taifun is being developed for the new
operating system ´Amiga DE´ using the Amiga Software Developer Kit (SDK). KDH-Datentechnik
will be distributor of Taifun.
At epic interactive Paul Burkey introduce ´Simon The Sorcerer II´. The game will be at the vendors
form the middle of next week. Also presented was ´Earth 2140´, a real-time strategy game has been
ported to the Amiga by Pagan Games on demand of epic interactive. The master volume is on its way to production.
Still under development is Dafel:Bloodline. Status: Thomas Wuergler continues to work on this game, but
when it will be finished cannot be estimated at the time being. ´Converting games´ currently has
a higher priority.
The ATC team handed me a disk containing a preview of the reworked classic game
Dynamite. This one will be to play via internet. I promise to have
a look at it soon. :)
My quite personal summary: The AMIGA is anything but dead! There are innovative developments in hardware
and software taking place. There is unfractured engagement and unrestricted attendance to continue. In many
dialogues it got clear that we are facing a future which though is undetermined, it's not hopeless.
Tenor from the exhibitors' commercial point of view was, "Though one is able to make enough money with the
Amiga, one cannot ´line his pockets´". Already from just this solitary point of view I rate this
fair as a success. I had a lot of fun, anyway, and to have been there really pushed on my motivation. :-)
OS 3.9 - Presentation by Juergen Haage and Martin Steigerwald
Torsten Dudai Dubai did a report about the OS 3.9 presentation on the WoA:
Though there was "US-Amiga-News / Bill McEwen" an item of the agenda, either Bill McEwen - who
stayed in America - nor Fleecy Moss - who was at the show - were available at that time, so
Juergen Haage had to stand in. In a direct dialogue with the users he tried to collect their
worries and sorrows for Amiga Inc. to be able to estimate the current mood. But the discussion
(due to the lack of facts on the subject AmigaDE) very soon resulted in the new OS 3.9, in which
every attendant of the seminar was very interested. So, Juergen Haage was able to seamlessly led
over to the following seminar.
Besides of individual problems (one elder man was especially "persistent") also much of the known
subjects were addressed, as like as the condition of "50,000" sold copies of OS3.9 (Fleecy Moss), and
the "license quarrel" around AmiTCP. In both cases Juergen Haage was able to quiet the devotees' minds: the number
"50,000" would not be meaningful at all, because it even isn't combined with a date. Later one just
would have to able to estimate if or if not OS 3.9 has been a success. For example only 40,000
(or less) sold copies already would be a big success. About the license quarrel Juergen Haage just
said, "There is no license quarrel". Haage & Partner obtained the license for AmiTCP correctly
and is allowed to distribute the TCP stack along with Genesis (no MUI, but Reaction GUI) on the
CD-ROM.
Then together with Stefan Robl, the programmer of AmiDocks, the new OS3.9 tool-bar, (almost) all of
the features of the new Amiga operating system were presented. During the presentation again ideas,
criticism, and suggestions were given by the viewers. Juergen Haage put an implementation in parts into
prospective for a coming "Boing-Pack 2". But the limits of what can be done are almost reached with
this update. Without a change of the KickROMs not much further can be done, any more.
But about one subject he could not give any clear statement: Amiga DE. Haage & Partner still didn't
decide whether or not they would port their own products to the new system. In parts this depends on the
availability of a sophisticated GUI system, which isn't available at the time being.

Open source: Bars&Pipes Pro 2.0
Alfred Faust has released an email of Todor Fay, the former chief programmer of
Blue Ribbon Soundworks Inc., on ANF that is dated 9. December 2000. In this
email Todor Fay announces the release of the source code of Bars&Pipes Pro
V2.0. Besides bugfixes this will make the continued development of the
sequencer possible.
For now Fay is collecting together the source code. For this he needs help from
one or more Amiga developers with an up and running Amiga developer environment.
«I think we can work towards a better solution:
I've gotten clearance to release the source code for
Bars&Pipes to the Amiga community. This means several
things:
1) Known bugs can be fixed.
2) Perhaps y'all can create special hooks for real time
services (timer, midi in and out) in the Amiga code so it
can connect more directly with the services in Windows. It's
pretty amazing that timing works at all, given that it is
running on an emulation of the audio interrupt (kudos to
Brian King!). 'Course that would require changes to WinUAE
to support this.
3) Port Bars&Pipes to Windows. If people want to collaborate
on such a project, I will very gladly provide advice and
assistance.
At this point, I'm collecting together the source code. I
need to work with one or more developers who have Amiga dev
environments up and running to help put this together. We
need to make sure everything is there and compiles
correctly.
WOA: Eyetech - AmigaOne/AmigaDE-Roadmap
Together with the partners Escena
(Martin Schueler) and Hyperion Software
(further partners are Haage&Partner (68k-Emulation) and Michael Rock(PCI/AGP-Resource
Libraries and other things)) the company Eyetech has presented their plans
regarding their AmigaOne computer. Fun Time World has released
diagrams
of this presentation.
The AmigaOne 1200 from Eyetech is a PPC-PCI-system plus Amga hardware and
68k-emulation for use with Amiga Classic and AmigaDE software. The PPC system is
based on the project
Brainstormer by Escena.
Via the WestBridge
of the system the A1200, IDE, 1 AGP- and 4 PCI-slots are connected. Via the
NorthBridge the PPC-cpu, the SDRAM, USB and two more PCI-slots. The
PPC
can access the Amiga-system (custom chips, Chip RAM, Amiga I/O).
On starting the system the FlashROM is copied into the SDRAM, then the
68k-emulator respectively the AmigaDE is activated and the Amiga Classic'
booted. The Amiga Classic software now runs on top of the 68k-emulation on the
AmigaOne-board (PPC) and uses the Amiga specific hardware of the integrated
A1200-board.
The emulation only emulates the command set of the 68k-cpu-line but no Amiga
specific hardware like AGA which exists as real hardware. The emulation is
memory intensive and therefore needs a fast memory access. For a step-by-step
adaption of the software 'in-line'-PPC-code is supported.
The following planned schedule is given in the diagrams.
Digital Almanac III Xmas update
Because of illness the release of the Xmas update for DA3 may be delayed some
days. Because of the same reason a preview of the new features was only possible
just now.
Under the title link you can find a summary of the new features including
screenshots.

New public beta of AmigaAmp
Just in time for the end of the WoA'2000 there's a new version of AmigaAmp.
Originally Thomas Wenzel had planned to release the final version 2.8 these
days. But there are two features he didn't want to psh back for later releases:
MAS-Player Support
The MAS-Player is an external MPEG-audio-decoder for the parallel port and can be
used with EVERY Amiga. The support in AmigaAmp exists in the form of a new
driver system developed by Paul Qureshi together with Dirk Conrad and Thomas
Wenzel. With the combination AmigaAMP and MAS-Player it is possible to play
MP3-files in full quality even on 68030 Amigas. Dirk himself offers a special
highly optimised software which makes playback of MP3 even on a 68000. The
MAS-Player is distributed by Eternity (Martin Wolf).
Shoutcast Streaming
Shoutcast is a protocol for live broadcastings of radio transmissions via the internet.
>From the today released version on AmigaAMP doesn't need an external program for
receiving such transmissions. The necessary protocol is directly integrated.
The two named features are still in development and don't run 100% stable. For
a first impression it is enough though. The new version of AmigaAMP is
downloadable from www.amigaamp.de.
GeoWorld V1.12 - New demo version of the geographical software
We of Beer Productions are happy to announce the release of a new
demo version of our geographical software for the Amiga. This demo version is
based on the current GeoWorld Version 1.12 and contains a foretaste of the
extensive data and many features that make this software unique on the Amiga.
The demoversion can be downloaded on our homepage as well as on the Aminet
(misc/edu). Currently GeoWorld can still be ordered for a special price at
Amiga Arena. (ps)
Price of the 'Martina' sound card
On December 5th, 2000 Czech Amiga News announced the approximate price of the
'Martina' sound card by Michal Kluczewski. The clockport version will cost
about 180,- DM(90,- EUR).
The MPEG decoder modul will be available seperately. Prices for this modul
and other card versions have not been fixed yet.

Mediator, G-Rex and P96
Several news have been released on the CyberGFX pages in the last few days.
In the channel #amiga(irc.whiterose.net), a collaborator of Hyperion, voiced
positively about the design of the Mediator board. To keep costs low the
people from Elbox only use one logic chip which is used as many times as
required. This way they have managed among otheres to create their PCI bus
without having to use expensive Glue- chipsets from third party companies.
«On #amiga (irc.whiterose.net) one of the guys from Hyperion was chatting about the design of
the Mediator: "They've shown some really clever ways to keep their costs down in design, certainly....
All of their hardware consists of ONE logic chip which they use repeatedly, as many as necessary.",
"They design all their own components, so no need to buy expensive external glue logic.",
"Their PCI bus, for instance, is entirely their own implementation, no glue chip-sets from a
3rd party manufacturer.", "For instance there was a bug in the FastATA 4000 hardware, and
they had to send out replacement chips to fix it. FPGA could just be reprogrammed.", FastATA 4000
is "EIDE controller for Z3. The ONLY one." "Umm it implements the fast ATA modes. like PIO-4, etc.
So I get better performance out of IDE drives.", "Again, like all their other products, their
IDE implementation is their own, using the same chip they use on all their products. :-) Pretty cool."
"Well it also does PIO-5 but Z3 has trouble with it."»
The vendors.txt has been
updated on November, 25th 2000 updated. 18 new boards have been added
respectively updated. There have been no particular changes related to the
Mediator itself.
Pictures about the G-Rex with 5 PCI slots, and about CyberGraphX running on a
VooDoo4 4500 have been released..
About Picasso96 concerning Elbox there has been a new article released
from the P96-Mailinglist.

ASM-One V1.45 R454c
As announced on December 5th, 2000, version 1.45 revision 454c of the assembler
'ASM-One' has been released. In this version many bugs have been removed and
some functions added. The RTG version (for gfx boards) only made it to a beta
version since there has not been enough time to remove bigger bugs.
The normal version needs at least AmigaOS 2.x. The RTG version AmigaOS 3.x.
Both require reqtools.library and asl.library.
In the first archive there is also the ASM-One Guide, which contains ASM-One
source rescuer and the history
KICKSTART ARCHIVES
The homepage of KICKSTART ARCHIVES CD-ROM has moved and can be reached under
http://home.nexgo.de/kickstart/.
This page contains among others a wide collection of texts about the history of
the Amiga.
Release date of the CD-ROM is 12-31-2000.
You can find all the necessary information at the homepage.

AmigaOS 4.0 PPC theoretically possible
In the IRC of the WOA 2000 Fleecy Moss of Amiga Inc. stated that AmigaOS 4.0
PPC is possible to be. Condition for this is that enough copies of
AmigaOS V3.9 will be sold to show that there is a valuable market for this product.
The required number of sold copies is 50,000.

Etick is a graphical ticker with plug-in support that can display
miscellaneous information like headlines of news services. The archive contains the
files that are necessary to develop plug-ins. Currently the following sources
are supported:
The program further needs Clip and Artix_Nexttext by Richard Collier. These
packages have to be installed before 'Etick'.
There is a small update for 'Ewinease'. This kit simplifies the programming of
AVE-GUIs in C. This update is an alpha version. The product is not completed and
may contain bugs. More detailed information are in TODO_HISTORY.doc.
Open Source Campaign planning to create a Counsil
The 'Campaign to Open Source the AmigaOS' campaign created by Steve Crietzman
is making efforts to release the AmigaOS sources as open source. In recent times it has
been quiet around this campaign. This was due to the fact that Crietzman had
taken a longer break, because work had gotten to much to handle. Now he regrets
to have been absent for so long without any explanation.
The current plan involves the creation of a transition plan for the Open
Amiga Foundation. Therefore they are looking for participants. Persons
interested in this initiative might contact OpenAmiga@aol.com.

Bill McEwen didn't attend the fair - his place was taken by an
unprepared Fleecy Moss. Heretic II has been presented as a Voodoo version.
The graphics board was plugged into a G-Rex PCI prototype in an A4000. The
G-Rex board for A1200's has also been presented. This version is ready and
in progress. It's said to be released early 2001.
More information are available in the Fun Time World announcement. Photos and more
information have been announced.

BoXer Board Status
On the Anti-Gravity page there is a press release dated November, 29th 2000
concerning the BoXer mainboard.
Current BoXeR prototype main-boards feature the emulated AGA chip-set on three
single chips. The final revision will integrate the AGA into one single chip.
The redesign has been completed and it is ready for build up. It is planned
to make this board with one single AGA chip available for the AmigaActive
magazine for testing purpose end of December.
The distributor network is growing. According to the latest survey there are
currently more than 500 distributors of the BoXer.
Our employment survey also got great and worldwide response. Anit-Gravity is
hoping to be able to contact everyone who replied to talk about possibilities
to enable all of them to take part in developing this system.

WoA 2000
I was shortly at the fair this morning to take some things there and to
get a first impression. The Mediapark consists of several architectonically
imposing buildings. The fair is held in the building Mediapark 7 (1st floor),
while the seminars are held in the building Mediapark 6 (also 1st floor). The
fair exhibitors are work like beavers on their booths and there's a bustle as in a
beehive.
Supplement:
In a talk with Juergen Haage, I have learned that Fleecy Moss will attend
the fair, too.
If you come by car, here a little tip:
A57 to Cologne-Centre, then follow "Innenstadt" until (very small) signs directing
to the MediaPark appear. The entrance to the underground bypass is directly
after the railway bridge. You drive from there either directly to the building
or down into the underground car park MediaPark. At the "Cinedom", the entrance
to the car park forks to the car park entrance and tunnel bypass. You can also
park in the underground car park Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring. Have a good trip and until
tomorrow :-).
With its PEGASOS development pblan GmbH of Germany brings the unleashed
PowerPC performance to the users.
By using a modular system design, the mainboard could be easily user upgraded
to the individual demands. With todays standard interfaces already designed
onto the PEGASOS mainboard, the users will be able to easily connect standard
components (like harddrives or CD Roms) and a wide range of high-end devices such
as digital video cameras to the system.
While PEGASOS itself is widely scaleable to the users needs, it's a easy task
for retailers or OEMs to configure the system for their demands. By hitting
the best price/performance point for the chosen configuration, systems
starting with one CPU (at entry level) up to multi PPC G4 based cluster computers
could be build using the same hardware.
GoldED - WoA 2000 special offer
Dietmar Eilert offers visitors of the WoA 2000 GoldED for half price.
To get the special price, please send your WoA ticket or a written
confirmation that proves your presence at the fair to the GoldED support.

ACSYS canceled
After a last telephone call with programmer it is now official that the development of ACSYS (Turrican-clone)
will be canceled. In our opinion for 86 interested people (result of a opinion poll) it is not
worthy continuing the development.
If the development will be continued by a third person the following applies:
The complete code will be released as open source. Only the engine will be given as an object file.
If a commercial publication is planned percentage share of the profit have to be given to us.
The level has to be negotiated with the developer. If the game is going to be published as freeware
we will waive the financial claims. PD,- shareware or something like that are not allowed.
The level of development is at fifty percent. If there are competent programmers we would continue
working on pictures if desired.
We regret this decision and hope you show understanding of it. If you want to write something
to this topic please mail to the programmer because
I have no influence on it no longer. The homepage will be online during the next time. I will complete
the list of interested people if I will get mails with this content.

AmigaOS 3.9 - a well done surprise?
In fact we would have liked to write an article about the new AmigaOS 3.9 on our own, but found the
article by Martin Steigerwald in the AMIGA Magazin 01/2001
so much perfect that we asked Joern-Erik Burkert, member of the editorial staff at Amiga Magazin,
to allow us publising it on amiga-news.de in both, German and English. Thank you very much for consent.
The announcement of the AmigaOS 3.9 came by accident for many people. Only a few dared to
think of having a new version of the AmigaOS in their hands within this year, already.
Nevertheless Haage&Partner together with many partners developed the new OS. Read
in this initial overview which new features it offers, and come to your own
conclusion whether or not this surprise was well done.
AmigeOS 3.9 is shipped on CD-ROM. Who is not satisfied by the operating system's online
help might order a printed version (German) from Haage&Partner, which is a tips&tricks
book describing what's new in AmigaOS 3.9 in a comprehensive way.
AmigaOS 3.9 contains big and completely new implemented features, e.g. the dock program
»AmiDock«, as well as many enhancements in detail and bugfixes, too. Additionally
proved third party tools are integrated: features formerly only available as patches, such as
like the FontCache or the configuration of asl file requesters, now are firmly integrated into
the OS, tools like »RAWBInfo«, and »ViNCEd« simplify the daily work.
The description of new features in this article does not claim to be complete and bases on
a pre-version of AmigaOS 3.9. But the features described here are already implemented and
supposed to be for sure.
Simplified Installation
Compared to AmigaOS 3.5 installation has been simplified distinctly. It is no longer
necessary to install AmigaOS 3.1, at first. Also there is no need to restart the system, any
more. There are two kinds of installation: the update installation updates an existing AmigaOS 3.5,
and only copies icons which are new since OS 3.5. The full installation installs AmigaOS 3.9 -
including all of the necessary files of AmigaOS 3.5, and AmigaOS 3.1 - including all of the GlowIcons.
Full installation also allows a fast new installation of the system, if booted from a before created
emergency disk. This way AmigaOS 3.9 can be re-installed easy and fast even in case of a complete harddisk
failture. As with AmigaOS 3.5 the emergency disk also supports RTG systems and AGA 31KHz screenmodes.
Due to this also in case of emergency no 15KHz monitor is needed, any more.
Well Docked?
»AmiDock« simplifies working with the Workbench in a enormous way. To start programs
usually one has to click down to the related directory and then double click the program's icon. But
with »AmiDock« you are able to easily create button strips, which allow to open programs and
directories by one single mouse click.
Contrary to most of the other tools like this AmiDock fully supports the new coloured icons. And - maybe
the most important feature - it is extremely easy and fast to use. If you would have to open a
configuration window for other programs, with »AmiDock« you just drag the icon of the
desired directories and programs into a dock. If you drop the icon, it will automatically be included.
This way docks can be created as fast as the wind, cause you don't have to configure each single
switch. Moreover this, there are default configurations for certain directories: e.g. AmiDock just
reads the »Prefs« and displays all of the preferences in one dock.
Also the adjustment of the dock's size is conceivable intuitive. Instead of being forced to declare
the number of lines and columns inside a configuration window, you just drag the dock to the desired
size. Then the dock will be fixed at the related width and height. AmiDock shows this by a small
handle bar. By clicking on this the size will be released, again. Or you just drag the dock to a new
size.
Beside of calling programs AmiDock also supports opening directories on the Workbench, as well as
calling programs using arguments: so e.g. you may drag'n drop a text on the switch which for example
will start the editor »EditPad«, and just lets EditPad insert this text.
More comfortable Workbench
Also in other parts working with the Workbench became more comfortable: many new assistants are
supporting the daily work. »RAWBInfo« offers a Workbench information window with a nice
ReAction GUI which really has got many features. E.g. you even can give an icon a different
picture which is loaded via datatypes.
To make the Workbench deal with files which don't have an icon in a reasonable way there is
»DefIcons«. This program gives files without an own icon a default icon according to
the file type. This way pictures and texts without an icon can easily be started via double click.
DefIcons can be configured via it's own preferences program.
Who - a bit envious of Apple or Windows - always was wishing a trashcan directly on the Workbench,
will get this feature in OS 3.9. With »BenchTrash« this is no problem. This program
either just will delete files dropped on the trash or will move them to a certain directory. But that's
not all of it: who always wanted to eject a CD-Rom like it is done on the Mac can do that now. Just
drag'n drop the CD's icon on the trash, and there you go! Also handy is the feature to clean up the
trash regularly and to delete every file older than a certain amount of days.
It has also been cared for a new clock. »WBClock« displays itself as an animated AppIcon
on the Workbench. It even is optionally transparent, which looks very good sometimes.
Also very handy is the search function of the Workbench. This is done by a external program called
»Find« which can be started via the Workbench menu »Window/Search« or as a single
task. According to how it was started and configured it allows to search in the current Workbench
directory or in one or more harddisk partitions. It cannot only be searched for file names, but
also for contents (e.g. keywords). Double clicking on a file found tries to start a reasonable action
on it: this way e.g. a seldom used file can be searched and started directly from Find.
LhA, LZX, but also archive files of other formats (see »Features«) can be unpacked
by a simple double click, thanks to the implementation of »xad« in AmigaOS 3.9. »xad«
supports many formats. This way the user only seldom will happen to meet an archive which cannot be
unpacked, if any. Related programming knowledge assumed one can write an own unpacking routine.
»xad« can also be addressed via shell commands.
More Multimedia
But also some has happened in the case of multimedia. PlayCD, the somehow bare appearing CD player from
AmigaOS 3.5 has been started up thoroughly: the program now supports skins. Another advancement: PlayCD
as a rule doesn't need to be configured any more, but itself looks for a suitable CD-Rom drive,
if necessary.
»ACTION« plays Quicktime and AVI movies optionally on an own screen or inside a window on the
Workbench. In doing this it's very fast. Even on not that good equipped Amigas acceptable results are
to accomplish. Control buttons allow to start and stop the movie, to adjust volume, as well as to
well directed »skim through« the movie using a scroll bar.
»Amplifier« beside MPEG-3 music files also plays AIFF and WAV files. It has got play lists which
can be both, loaded and saved. The program as well supports skins and is capable of playing music either
via the Amiga sound chip Paula or via a sound card. With this the standards AHI and X-Audio are supported.
A X-Audio driver for the Paula sound chip is included. On the Workbench music files can easily be drag'n
dropped into the play list to add them to this.
»AWeb SE 3.3« which came with AmigaOS 3.5 has been updated to the new version of »AWeb«.
This version now also supports »FONT FACES«. So you can let it display websites nicer and
more true to original with suitable fonts. Support of JavaScript has been enhanced, too, and much more.
And to be able to start surfing immediate AmigaOS 3.9 contains the full version of »Genesis« with
ReAction GUI. Only the Genesis preferences program could not be transposed to ReAction in time, because
of it's scope. Who has MUI installed can use it however - otherwise MUI must get installed. But
the enhanced Genesis Wizard compensates for that, which makes it very easy to configure an internet
account on the basis of the provider database.
Powerful Console
Beside of the extensions to the Workbench and the players also shell enthusiasts will not miss out with
the new update: as console handler for shell windows now the powerful »ViNCEd« is used.
From now on all of the console windows are having scrollbars to re-display text which scrolled out of
the window. But it also has been thought of the shell users which don't like typing in: using the TAB key
incomplete file or directory names can be completed now. With this »ViNCEd«, according to it's
settings, not only searches for suitable entries inside the current directory, but e.g. also inside the
assign list or inside the command search path. If »ViNCEd« finds only one entry the string
immediately gets completed, otherwise an asl requester will open to choose from the suitable entries
found. Handily the completion also works multileveled: if needed the given string gets completed up to
the first char from which multiple entries are possible. By entering a character or pressing the TAB key
and selecting an entry the procedure can be continued. »ViNCEd« is very versatile configurable and
offers many other features.
complete ANSI emulation
supports graphics boards
Macros - with these e.g. it is possible to use the F keys for often used commands and functions.
configurable keyboard control
Job control, as known form Unix shells
And what else?
Moreover there is a nice set of interesting and useful features: so the new »diskfont.library«
with integrated FontCache cares for faster display of font requesters. This features has been implemented
completely transparent for applications, but also can be disabled for single directories. New installed or
deleted fonts are automatically recognized and the cache file gets updated accordingly.
Also »asl« has been extended. Using the preferences program position, size, and sorting order of
asl requesters can be set. Also this is not a patch any more, but is »officially« controlled
by the new »asl.library«, and the new »IPrefs«. The »text.datatype« now
supports searching inside of the text, as well as marking parts of the text. Marked parts handily
are automatically copied to the clipboard. Also the »string.gadget« has been extended: so now you
can mark char by char or undo the last change inside of every text input field.
The new »test« function of the screenmode preferences program is a nice detail, too.
You no longer have to tapper in the dark and maybe reboot, if the newly chosen mode accidently cannot be
displayed contrary to what you've expected.
New Features
AmiDock: completely new written and extremely easy to use dock program. The fast way to easy
start programs or to open certain directories.
Integration of Workbench extensions: »RAWBInfo« offers a nice done and rich of functions
Workbench information window, »DefIcons« a default icon system
More compatibility: »newiconemu« allows to edit the new coloured icons
(»V44-GlowIcons«) with NewIcon capable programs, too.
New Tools: »BenchTrash«, the free configurable trashcan on the Workbench; »WBClock«
, the clock being an icon; as well as »IoMegaTools«,
the tool for ZIP and JAZ drives.
Extended PowerPC support: WarpOS V5 is included, new »picture.datatype« supports PPC
More multimedia: new versions of »PlayCD« with skin support and many bugfixes;
QuickTime and AVI movie player »ACTION«; player for MPEG3, AIFF, and WAV »Amplifier«
Genesis: the TCP/IP stack for local area networks and internet connection - already widely with ReAction GUI.
xad: the archive unpacking system. unpack archives from the Workbench by just double clicking it. Supports
LhA, LZX, ZIP, RAR, ARJ, DMS, and many other formats.
ViNCEd: new console handler with scrollbar, file name completer, ANSI emulation, and many other handy
features.
AWeb 3.4 SE: the in AmigaOS 3.5 included browser has been updated.
»FONT FACE« support, enhanced Javascript support, and much more.
Find: allows searching for file names or file content on multiple partitions. Can be called directly from
the Workbench menu.
Asl requester: there is also a preferences program for setting the size of, and the sorting order inside of
requesters.
text.datatype: now allows searching inside of the text, and copying of marked text parts into the clipboard.
New gadgets: the colour wheel (»colorwheel.gadget«), and the gradient slider (»gradientslider.gadget«)
now support screens with 65000 or 16 millions of colours; the new »string.gadget«
offers marking char by char, undo, and much more.
New FontCache: faster display of font requesters.
rexxmathlib.library: new math functions for ARexx.
Many bugfixes: new mathe libraries with important bugfixes, bugfixes in ReAction, Workbench, and many other.

MPEG 4 available for Amiga soon
Let me inform you about our new MPEG-4-based codec called 3ivx. You probably heard of DivX ;-)
as a movie compression format. And indeed it's great. But we (the whole 3ivx.com team, under
the supervising eye of Mr. Stux who has created the DivX ;-) Player for Mac) want to go a bit
further. Our goal is to optimize compression so that the file size is smaller, of a higher
quality and fully streamable. Moreover the codec will be supported on all platforms (Windows,
Macintosh, BeOS, *nix (inlcuding Linux), Amiga ...). To accomplish this the code of the player
will become an open source.

Genesis Rights Controversial
On 28. September 2000 Haage&Partner released a
note
in which the company announced to have obtained distribution and copyrights
for the TCP/IP-Stack 'Genesis' from Active Technologies (Chris Wiles). Through
this acquisition H&P received the possibility to integrate an own TCP/IP
stack into the new AmigaOS Version 3.9 without any complications.
Note: The Genesis package is continued development of the AmiTCP/IP
package by Network Solutions Development, Inc. (NSDi).
On 2. Dezember 2000 David Gerber, who is working by order of NSDi on AmiTCP,
released a press note by NSDi. According to this Active Technologies didn't
possess the rights for the AmiTCP part of Genesis and hence couldn't
sell these rights to H&P.
In this message NSDi among other things were written that they regard a distribution
of AmiTCP/IP without a direct contract with NSDi as an act of piracy.
To avoid misunderstandings with actual valid license contracts NSDi further
withdraws all for the time being valid licence contracts. Due to NSDi' own
representation this is possible as Chris Wiles (Active Technologies)
didn't observe his part of the license by not paying any licensing fees since
early 1999.
H&P is anxious to solving this problem friendly.
The exact wording of the press release of NSDi is available under the title link.

AmigaOne Discussion Board Remains Open
On November 24th, amiga-news.de reported that Amiga Inc.'s AmigaOne discussion
board will be closed on December 1st. The reason was a huge number of insults
which were published there.
On November 28th, Gary Peake of Amiga Inc. has announced in the Team Amiga
mailing list that the AmigaOne discussions won't be closed. He doesn't know
where the remark originated from, at least it didn't come from Amiga.
So the discussion board can still be
accessed,
but now only for registered users, which wasn't explicitly mentioned by
Gary Peake.
If anyone asks, we are NOT closing the AmigaOne forums on
www.amiga.com
Somebody must have been playing on their Momma's computer and got
loose and posted that remark.
It did NOT come from us. [...] (Gary Peake)
