Artikel: Sampling sound on the Amiga
An Amiga has stereo line-out connectors that allow it to play audio, but normally no audio inputs. In order to record sound with the Amiga, additional hardware had to be purchased. This article by Edwin van den Oosterkamp describes an example of such hardware, the "Sampling Cartridge" for the Amiga, which is also available as Open Source project. (dr)

History of technology: The Rise and Fall of 3M's Floppy Disc
IEEE, an online magazine specialising in technology topics, has published a background report on the storage medium floppy disk and the company 3M that is well worth reading.

Floppy discs had an amazingly long life - it was only in January 2024 that the Japanese government announced that it would no longer require floppy disc copies of government applications. 3M got out of the data storage business some 28 years ago when it transferred its floppy disc production to an outsourced company called Imation. Imation still exists, under the name Glassbridge Enterprises, but with a much lower profile.

You can read the entire article in English under the title link. (nba)

AmigaOS 4.1: Graphics card driver RadeonHD V5.20 for Sam460
The RadeonHD driver software is a graphics driver for RadeonHD graphics cards for AmigaOS 4.1 (amiga-news.de reported). Version 5 only supports "Southern Islands" cards (HD7000 series), but offers hardware-accelerated video decoding (Enhancer Software 2.2 required). The new version 5.20 has now been released for the Sam460. The changes:
  • Fixed a potential crash in the find card code when the card is already in use
  • Fixed an infinite loop in code to get PCIe speed capabilities, which would trigger if the parent PCIe device isn't the root controller
  • Disabled GART for the Sam460 again (was accidentally enabled)
  • The usleep() threshold for using the timer device was broken a while ago. FIXED
  • Rewrote usleep() so it no longer needs to open/close the timer device every time there's a longer delay (lowers overhead)
  • Now skips attempting to initialize the card altogether if the card is already in use
  • Fixed a potential crash if initializing the driver failed
  • Enabled the UVD interrupt (trap handler)
  • Fixed interrupt handling for the Sam460. Caching on PCIe reads from VRAM was causing the interrupt handler to read stale data, resulting in missed interrupts which, in turn, causes a complete freeze. Added fallback and workaround code
(dr)

Operating system: NetBSD 10.0
The Unix derivative NetBSD has been released in version 10.0. The eighteenth major version of the NetBSD operating system is also available as an original port for PowerPC-Amigas (experimental) and 68k-Amigas.

The global changes since the last version 9.3 are listed on the NetBSD website and include numerous performance, security and general aspects. Two new features are listed specifically for Amiga systems:
  1. support for Kickstart 3.2 (the release from 2020)
  2. loadbsd bootloader now loads the kernel into the highest priority memory segment instead of the largest segment
The following system requirements are specified for installation and operation on 68k Amigas: Amiga with 68020 processor or higher with MMU, at least 24 MB Fast RAM and at least 250 MB free hard disc space. An FPU is not required; according to the developers, the system "does not run correctly" on LC processors 68LC040 and 68LC060 as well as on the 68040V. (nba)
