Unknown Amiga prototype: Sanyo CD-X
The "Sanyo CD-X" prototype was apparently an Amiga with a CD drive housed in a custom-made case; it predates Commodore's CDTV and was designed specifically for the Japanese market. Until now, the only available source of information about this prototype - developed by Sanyo independently of Commodore - was a scan from a contemporary Japanese PC Engine magazine.
YouTuber The Laird’s Lair set out to search the web for more information about the device and found two issues of the British newspaper "New Computer Express" - issues 82 and 83 from June 1990 (complete archive) - that mention Sanyo's CD-X and Commodore's CDTV. At the time, the editorial team had also contacted Sanyo directly and was told by the electronics giant that, in their search for a product capable of competing with the X68000 from Sanyo's biggest Japanese rival Sharp, they had settled on the Amiga and intended to combine it with a CD drive. Reportedly, they were already in talks with leading Japanese game developers to convince them to port their arcade or PC Engine games to the CD-X.
However, it remains unknown why this approach was not pursued further and what became of the prototype. (cg)
