Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Happy New Year everyone! Some of you will see this on the last day of
1999, some on the first of 2000 - either way, you have another reason
to celebrate today! We've been waiting and practically twitching to
get this information to you.
We still don't have a press release directly from Amino, but as the
following information is now available generally on the wire, we owe
it to our readers to get it to you as quickly as possible. If we do
get a press release from Amino/Amiga we'll also get that to you right
away.
Looks to us like both Gateway and the Amiga Community win with this
deal.
 Big smiles around here today!

 Brad Webb,
 Editor

Amino Development Buys Amiga Name, Inventory From Gateway

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 31 -- Amino Development Corp., a privately held
company based in Maple Valley, Washington, has purchased from Gateway
its Amiga trademarks and Amiga computer systems. Terms of the
transaction have not been disclosed.

According to Peter Ashkin, Gateway senior vice president, Gateway
chose to sell the name after deciding to fold Amiga's software
engineering function into Gateway's product development. This merger
of development activities is part of Gateway's overall strategy to
develop and market the coming generation of "Internet appliances".

"Amiga, as a personal computer brand, has a loyal following of fans
around the world," Ashkin said. "Under Gateway's wing, Amiga morphed
into a software development company working on a new Internet
appliance operating environment software. Now that we're bringing that
development work into Gateway product development, it made sense to
find a buyer for Amiga."

"Yee-haw " said Bill McEwen, president and CEO of Amino. "This is a
very exciting day, and now an even more exciting tomorrow. Now we can
finish the job that was started 15 years ago."

The transaction, effective immediately, includes the transfer of all
Internet domain names related to Amiga which Gateway had held. Gateway
retains ownership of all patents acquired when it bought Amiga in
1997.

Bill McEwen speaks at Amiga.org:
Happy New Year to all Amigans around the world.
Today Gateway announced that we have acquired Amiga. This is all true, and we are going to be making numerous announcements in the next week about the plans for the future systems, and it is all going to be very exciting. There is a very bright future for us, and now we can begin the journey. Welcome 2000! - Bill McEwen

I now recommend one thing: go back and have a look at the last two caricatures by Torsten Dudai (Once upon a time...). Either all these heads agree on a common goal, and cooperate; or this Hydra will be going nowhere. If I see things correctly, there are two heads considerably stronger than the rest - QNX and Amino. If THEY agree on things, the next few days will tell. But the people behind PowerOS, MorphOS, Screens, and AROS should have a close look at what is going on, and think twice about how they can serve the cause best. (mb) (unk) (Translation: mb)

AmigaOS 3.5 wish list
Martina Jacobs writes:
I just hit a site I think interesting. At the title link, you can find a user wish list for AmigaOS 3.5 updates. Using the guestbook, you can state your opinion of what is still needed in AmigaOS.

If H&P knows about this site, I don't know, but it only makes sense this way. If it isn't the case, they know now. :-) (unk) (Translation: mb)

Report from the Chaos Communication Congress
"The 16th Chaos Communication Congress divided the hacker community into two fractions more than ever before - one wanting to do a life style party, and the other wanting to stress political discussions and seminars. Harsh criticism and euphoric words were balanced in the final discussion on Wednesday after three days "fun at the system". Chasms were across "Windowsing", "generalism" and "game-centricism" of the hacker meeting. Does the Chaos Computer Club open itself to the mainstream in a time when Internet is becoming the masses media, and is the meeting degrading to just another LAN party?"

Taking the high Dollar (or low Euro) into account, PerSuaSiVe SoftWorX again have decided to allow for cheaper registrations through RegNet.
Additionally, prices have been updated to reflect all possible, most uptodate bundle discounts as well. For example, the cheapest bundle (#5553) now only is $14 instead of $18.5 and the most expensive (#5563) only is $65 instead of $77.5. Please see www.ar-kleinert.de/regnet_e.html for links to RegNet and their sales conditions. (unk) (Translation: mb)

Axel Krämer now at Met@box
I had the opportunity to talk with Axel Krämer on the phone a short time ago. He is now at Met@box, responsible for production and logistics, and is very happy with his work. Just like before, he has a keen eye on what is going on in the Amiga sector, and wishes all Amigians a happy new year 2000.

Of course I also asked Axel about news on the joeCARD, and he promised to tell us news immediately :-). (ps) (Translation: unk)
