GFX-BASE: Review of Feeble Files
Richard Kapp writes:
On the GFX-BASE you can once again read a detailed English review. This time it's about the 3D adventure 'The Feeble Files', which has recently been released for Amiga.

Apart from this we've got new pictograms for our news reports on GFX-BASE, our link list has been extended and for users of IE (and other browsers such as Konqueror under Linux) we've created a so called 'Favicon', which appears in the address list if you add our page to Favorites. Have fun! (sd) (Translation: sr)

Donald E. Knuth: All Questions Answered
On 5 October 2001 Donald E. Knuth gave a presentation at the 'Technische Universität München' entitled 'All Questions Answered'. 350 people were present and he just answered all the questions of the audience. AMS published an English article of 7 pages about everything that was said including photos. In the article you'll find answers to the following questions:
  • Do you have thoughts on quantum computing?
  • What importance do you give to the design of efficient algorithms, and what emphasis do you suggest giving this area in the future?
  • Can you give us an outline for computer science, some milestones for the next ten or twenty years?
  • What is the relationship between God and computers?
  • What is your thinking about software patents?
Donald E. Knuth is the author of "The Art of Computer Programming" and the TeX settings system.

Since 1968 he's been working at Stanford University where he holds the title of 'Professor Emeritus of the Art of Computer Programming'.

Instant Messenger: STRICQ 2.7
On 15 March 2002 Douglas F. McLaughlin released the beta version 2.7 of the instant messenger 'STRICQ'. Compared to the previous version the following features have been changed:

  • New: Can now add numeric (only) UINs to the contact list.
  • Modification: Online/offline status changes are now updated for those contacts that are permanently in the 'Not in List' group. To be permanent, a message must have been sent/received or the contact was added manually.
  • Modification: Some may have noticed that in the previous version the system beep came up on incoming messages.
  • Modification: The versioning system now works according to the normal Amiga scheme: version.revision.

Installation instructions: STRICQ V2 isn't compatible with the previous version STRICQ and must therefore be installed in its own directory. At the moment STRICQ V2 can only be launched from a shell prompt.

There's a lot of debug output in the shell window so that you may need to send a copy to Douglas F. McLaughlin in case of bug occurrences.

Run the program, it will not be able to get online right away. Enter your nickname, your UIN and your password. Click 'Save'. Close the program by using the close window button on the contact list window. Your prefs are now saved. Restart the program and if all went well, you should now be online. However, you have to consider the following points:
  • It's now possible to add UINs manually. Searching for Name/Nick/E-Mail is not yet supported.
  • If you have used ICQ2001b before, STRICQ V2 will import your contact list from the server.
  • If you get an enforcer hit, please forward it/them to Douglas F. McLaughlin. Make sure you use <pre></pre> tags.
  • You'll need the latest versions of NList, NListtree, and TextInput. Links for download are available on the STRICQ homepage.

AROS

AROS: Palm, Zune (MUI), Build-System, HDToolBox
At AROS the work on Palm port, Zune (MUI), the build system for compilations of AROS and the HDToolBox for partitioning the hard disc has progressed a lot since the beginning of March.

Stefan Berger and Georg Steger are working on the Palm port. It already boots Xcopilot and POSE off a ROM image and displays some windows at incredible speeds: The screen bar's title 'Workbench Screen' is drawn at 5 seconds per char ;-). Obviously the graphics driver needs some improvement. At the moment everything is done via PutPixel() and GetPixel().

Sebastian Bauer is permanently doing more work on Zune.

Henning Kiel has changed the build system so that you can have compile targets in one tree. Also different host configurations in one tree are now supported.

Sebastian Heutling has committed his new partition.library and a new HDToolBox which uses the library to access/modify the partition table.

Iain Templeton fixed init() functions of the libraries to use proper macros for arguments.

Stefan Berger implemented Clib's sig#?set() functions.

Adam Chodorowski merged in the latest Python 2.2

AROS is an open source project for implementing an OS which is platform independent and compatible with AmigaOS V3.1. (sd) (Translation: sr)

Portal: amiga.com.pl and amiga.hu boycott Amiga Inc.
Because of Amiga Inc.'s plans to provide Microsoft Windows CE.NET with software www.amiga.com.pl and www.amiga.hu have decided to boycott Amiga Inc.. All links to Amiga Inc. will be removed from the pages and there'll be no more publications of news regarding the company, their products and their employees. As far as Amiga Klassik, MorphOS etc. is concerned everything will stay the same.

«"The latest Amiga Inc. policy shifts... give us no other option than to say farewell to them for good..." That was the public statement of Grzegorz Juraszek of Poland's Amiga news service amiga.com.pl.

Balogh Karoly of the Hungarian Amiga news service followed suit. "We the editors of amiga.hu hereby join the Polish boycott." Karoly cited a public opinion poll that showed users strongly disapproved of recent events at Amiga Inc.

The developments are in response to announcements by both Amiga Inc. and Microsoft that the two companies have formed an axis. Amiga Inc. intends to provide software to Windows CE devices, and is appearing at the current Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco, USA.

The Russian Amiga Information Center www.amiga.org.ru had not yet taken a public position as of press time.» (sd) (Translation: sr)
