AHI - Beta

Audio: AHI - ahi.device 5.21 (Beta) (Update)
Martin Blom released version 5.21 (beta) of the ahi.device for ix86. The following changes were made.
  • ahi.device: Re-enabled optimization and removed all 64 bit kludges for the Amithlon version. It's still just using the C version of the mixing routines, but is already about 2.5 times faster native (compared to the JIT-compiled 4.180 version). I like it.

  • paula.audio: When opening timer.device (used in the DMA mode), I didn't clear the flags parameter and opened UNIT_MICROHZ instead of UNIT_ECLOCK. [Sigbjørn Skjæret]

  • amigascne.org (a lot scene material)
  • aros.org (the source compatible AmigaOS clone),
  • geekgadgets.org (ports of many GNU/FSF programs for Amiga),
  • funet.fi [amiga] (many old Amiga programs, +Fish disks 1-999)

AmigaOne: MPEG showing the AmigaOne booting TurboLinux
Elwood writes on ANN:
I uploaded on Aminet a video in Mpeg showing the AmigaOne booting TurboLinux. This video is old (March 2002) and not professional in any way (in fact, it never meant to be). I originally wanted to upload it on my website instead of putting this huge file on Aminet but my ISP didn't allow me this. So here it is, to make Aminet even bigger!

Remember this AmigaOne is the prototype (G3/600Mhz) and it runs TurboLinux. And I must confess, I never seen a Linux booting that fast. I'm excited to get my hand on AmigaOS4.

Download: AmigaOne.mpg (80 MB)

Update 02.06.2002:
The video was deleted from this Aminet server. I do not know the motive.

Update II 02.06.2002:
Here you will find the explanation from Elwood. (ps)

Amiga Arena - Full version of "Samba Partie AGA/ECS" and redesign
With the approval of Jo Seitz (Sayonara Software), Amiga Arena enabled the release of the full version of the football manager "Samba Partie AGA/ECS".

This is the first part of the "Samba" series. Besides lots of other features, the football manager also has an action part where you can actively play with your team.

Amiga Arena has been allowed to release further games by "Sayonara Software" in the future. Yet, for this we need your help, as we don't have all games at our disposal!

We are looking for the following software items:

  • Diego - Football manager
  • WHLM - Ice Hockey manager
  • Samba Partie prof. - Football manager with action part
  • Travel-Manager - Travel simulation
  • Hollywood Pictures - Manager
  • Samba World Cup - Football manager with action part
Please contact: Olaf Köbnik.

Amiga Arena - "Full version" redesign
The Amiga Arena Full versions have been divided into new areas. Besides the familiar download facilities for commercial software and shareware programs, the areas have been restructured, and with "Applaud Software", "Sayonara Software" and "Vulcan Software" three new areas have been added.

Here you will be able to find - apart from the well-known games of the software houses - level codes, cheats, screenshots as well as reviews of the products. Furthermore, we are looking for the game "DNA" by "Applaud Software"! Have fun with our offerings! Amiga Arena. (ps) (Translation: cb)

Survey about Tukult, the Space-Rat adventure
A poll about the systems to be supported has been started on the new homepage of Tukult, an adventure game in development about Space-Rat.

As the first drafts had been made on an Amiga, and the author used to be an Amiga user then, in the case of an adequate turnout there should be a very realistic chance of an Amiga port.

AmiDock for AmigaOS 4 - New informations
A lot of users have questions about the new version of AmiDock that will be included with OS 4, especially regarding the differences between the OS 3.9 and the OS 4.0 version.

Here are the answers by Stefan Robl, the author of AmiDock.

The OS4.0 version of AmiDock is an almost completely rewrite of the version included with OS3.9 and a lot of outstanding issues were fixed.

The new design comes with a much improved layouter which arranges all types of icons very well (from very tiny to really big ones).

A very nice new feature is the interactive mode of AmiDock which allows the user to arrange, add, remove icons, categories and even docks directly using the mouse without the need to open the configuration dialog.

AmiDock now also supports button type docks allowing for numerous objects (programs, files) to be available at once as this mode consumes very little "desktop real-estate".

With OS4.0's AmiDock, docks can now have their drag bar on all four possible sides of a dock; each dock is now also minimizeable to conserve space.

The new AmiDock is now up to ten times faster than the old version (depending on the number of icons visible at load time).

The most interesting new feature is the possibility to have active content within a dock through plug-ins.

A plug-in of AmiDock is called a "docky". Each docky has full access to all of AmiDock's functionality and can provide for a virtually endless number of features. The usage of dockies is very transparent - throw in a docky and it will work (and vice versa).

A number of dockies will already be included with OS4.0; one of the most requested features - subdocks - was made possible using a docky. There is also a docky which minimizes a dock automatically if the mouse pointer is no longer over the dock. Other included dockies allow you to have clock, a lens, animations and other active content within a dock.

The most thrilling stuff will surely come from third party programmers in the form of third-party dockies (the API will be released with OS4.0) - just imagine having the current network traffic, the printer status, the current rendering process of your raytracer and other similarly useful things in the form of a small and corresponding picture within your dock.

This is just the beginning, we are planning a lot more useful features for AmiDock which may or may not be ready in time for OS 4.0. (ps)

PatchInt is to solve a lockup problem with the Mediator board in connection with a SoundBlaster and FastEthernet card. The corresponding text from the CyberGFX site:

'Mr. Matthew Allatt has released a new (2nd release) PatchInt. He writes: "Just a quick email to let you know that I've made a small alteration to PatchInt. I was getting some distortion when playing MP3's through SoundBlaster, which I've never heard before, and wasn't because of my speakers being crap. I don't know if anyone else has had that problem, but I'm hoping that this version should clear that up".

Gamasutra

Gamasutra: Technology Inspires Creativity: Indie Game Jam Inverts Dogma 2001
Developing games today is very time consuming and costly. Furthermore, developers tend to first concentrate on familiarizing with new hardware to technically make the best use of it. Both go at the expense of new game ideas. In above article Ernest Adams describes the "Indie Game Jam" as antipole to currently adopted game development practice.

The basis for this jam was the question of how many sprites you can display on screen nowadays. After a bit of research, the answer was "round about 100,000". This served as the basis for the development of a simple games engine.

A small group of games developers was then invited to the "Indie Game Jam", who then went on to develop 12 news games within 4 days.

The article describes the surroundings and the games, and offers concluding information in an interview with Chris Hecker, one of this meeting's organisators. (sd) (Translation: cb)

On 1st June 2002, Stephan Rupprecht has published version 45.9 of his ILBM PPC Datatype for displaying IFF ILBM pictures. Compared to the previous version, the following changes have been made:

  • Bug fix: Because of the change in version 45.7 b/w and greyscale pictures couldn't be loaded anymore (greyscale pictures already didn't work before that).
  • Bug fix: As the OS picture.datatype doesn't pass on HAM and EHB pictures in Chunky format correctly, a workaround for this has been incorporated.

The Datatype runs with AmigaOS 3, CPU 020+, PPC 603+ as well as picture Datatype V43+.
