`28.Feb.2003` GFX-Base	Start menu: AmiStart version 0.64 Darius Brewka has published version 0.64 of AmiStart. AmiStart is a Windows-like start menu with quick-launchbar, Drag&Drop-support and a configurable graphical interface which allows transparency, rounded corners, background textures and much more. Since version 0.63 AmiStart offers also the so called shape-layer that means configurable and programmable skins for controlling external applications via ARexx. On the 25th of February the National Inspection Bureau For Youth-Endangering Publications (BPjS) categorized this game in an express decision. `27.Feb.2003` Otto Dette (E-Mail)	Convention: Computer & Video Swap Meet Bremen - March 1st & 2nd, 2003 On the first and second of March 2003 the Computer and Video Swap Meet will take place in Bürgerzentrum Neue Vahr. On both days the hours of this convention are from 9 am until 5 pm. The gathering is a sales convention for end users; there will be hardware and software from many categories offered. The Users of the North Sea Coast have two rooms this time. The Atari Computer Club of Bremen organizes the schedule with individual activities. On the first level: Video-processing with the Amiga. DVD on the Amiga, Digital cameras on the Amiga, direct comparison between PPC and 060 (Earth 2140 and other games). The following software will be demonstrated: MediaPoint, SCALA-MM-400, Digital-Almanac, AmiAtlas-6 and eventually iFusion and naturally TV on Amiga (PixelView in comparison to Picasso IV). Additionally a highly upgraded Amiga 4000D in an Elbox tower with PPC, USB and PCI (TV, ethernet, sound und graphic cards) will be shown. The innards of this computer are visible through plexiglass casing under blue illumination, and it is just one of several Amigas to be seen Video-processing with Amiga, PC and Mac; here's where the newest programs line up to go for it. Old films may be digitally processed and placed on DVD through the use of internal or external expansions, and all this without using a PC or Mac. Linux KNOPPIX 3.1 (the CD is from the Federal Bureau for Security and Information Technology) will be demonstrated in an hard-drive installation. On the second level: The Mac display area will be found here, and the following computers shown: Pictures and Info. Many diverse hardware technologies of storage media clear through to viewable opened components will be shown. These systems will mostly be shown running, with explanations and demonstrations of the equipment. They'll be actively shown with the operating systems and software performing functions. During this time visitors themselves may do hands-on utilization of the equipment and/or play games. Additional some advertising spots from the 70s and 80s will be played. `27.Feb.2003` AMIGAplus	Emulator: Status Quo of UAE for Mac OS X Both the port of the Unix Amiga Emulator for Mac OS X by Marin Saric and the development of Max UAE by Alex Kasic have been on ice for several weeks. AMIGAplus editor Wolfgang Böhl reports on the status of UAE for Mac OS X: The current Mac-modified source code version 0.8.22 beta 1 of Max UAE emulator was placed online at the beginning of January. This means that compilation attempts and continued development by third parties are theoretically possible. From the assortment of alternatives Wolfgang Böhl took a look at the UNIX sources, compiled them for the Mac OS X kernel, and tried to get them running with Apple's X11 offering. And look: it works! After the first problems with a high crash tendency the emulator port is fairly stable. Nevertheless there are problems with mouse emulation and poor performance. Accordingly, a graphical configuration menu is being prepared right now. With wideranging programmer experience nothing should stand in the way of a successful port of UAE to Mac OS X. `27.Feb.2003` Martin Heine (ANF)	Genesi: More Details about STBs, Pegasos I, and OS4 In two public comments on ANN Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco made known some more details on, among other things, their STB (set-top box) activities and AmigaOS 4 for the Pegasos. The previously announced first major contract for DTV/STB has an initial quota of 150,000 units (with the previously mentioned option of over one million units). Beyond that, in the meantime, there has been a further DTV-STB project, which, it is stated, will insure the company's financial stability. This is to allow them to solidify their contractual obligations with business partners, developers and associates, building a stable foundation for the future. The Debian team alone encompasses 20 developers, Genesi reports. Of about 400-450 new Pegasos 1s there are supposedly only around 85 remaining. Additionally it was once again pointed out that a broad web-based sales and support strategy will be built up. To this end better documentation and more online resources are needed, and a full palette of applications must be programmed or ported. This will require time and talent. And so more people are currently being sought for this mission. Interested parties should make themselves known to bbrv@genesi.lu. With respect to AmigaOS: BBRV finds it a foregone conclusion that when OS4 is ready, it will find its way to the Pegasos. Not that Genesi will do this nor that it will require Genesi's support, only that somebody is going to do it. In relation to this BBRV intended to contact Ben Hermans (Hyperion) today. It is seen as a likelihood that in the end Hyperion will posess the IP rights to the classic AmigaOS, and then surely they will want to sell OS4 to every user with a PPC computer, and so BBRV is convinced that the Pegasos family of products will be there as the largest target market. `27.Feb.2003` clickBOOM	clickBOOM: S-Files 22 - Cinemaware-Games clickBOOM publishes details about Cinemaware-games in its latest S-Files 22: "Below you will be able to find more information on the current state of PC/Mac Digital Remasters (Wings, Lords of the Rising Sun, It Came from the Desert and Rocket Ranger) which we have been developing for over a year for Cinemaware, Inc. Digital Remasters proved to be a very challenging, yet very satisfying undertaking, as it required disassembling a 10-15 year old code which was originally never meant to be used on anything other than the computers of that era (namely Amiga 500 and 8-bit consoles). Late last year, however, regularly scheduled payments for development from Cinemaware suddenly stopped. Being a small team, it is imperative for clickBOOM that work we take makes financial sense. Therefore, our parent company, PXL, had to put development on hold or risk a financially difficult situation when working without payment. We were willing to work towards a solution and were patiently waiting for payment from Cinemaware which would allow us to continue development. Unfortunately, lack of payment was also followed by 6 weeks of no communication from Cinemaware. It seemed as if they had gone out of business. Not even phone calls were being returned. In the course of the past 3 months every effort was made on part of PXL to secure voluntary payment from Cinemaware, Inc. However, that has proved to be impossible, so PXL has no other alternative but to file a lawsuit against Cinemaware, Inc. for breach of contract and unpaid development cost. Even after enduring all of this, it is still our hope that the situation can be resolved, so that we can finish these almost completed games. `27.Feb.2003` Heise Newsticker	heise: IBM PPC 970 Now up to 2.5 GHz The IBM R&D group wants to show prototypes of the PowerPC "Blades" at the CeBIT convention. In a press release IBM relates that the PowerPC 970 operates "with speeds from 1.8 to 2.5 GHz" and is the "fastest PowerPC to date." A few months ago speeds of only 1.8 GHz were talked about. `26.Feb.2003` Emerald Imaging	RPG game: eVe status update In January 2003 Emerald Imaging, known for the adventure game 'Aqua', announced a new game called 'eVe'. The game will include hand drawn scenes and selected good music might increase the fun factor, too. Today some first early stage screen shots were published. For the screen shots at the website of the title link it is emphasized that these are from an early and not final version and that they just should demonstrate the progress of work on eVe. Actually the focus is on development of the main game play and core programming, later on the graphics will be finished. Most main characters are finished already. A "demo" is a program that does not require interaction with the user, as opposed to game demos. It's a combination of graphics, music and special effects - a presentation of the hardware capabilities, the programmer's and the artist's skills (graphics and music). The term "artist" is no exaggeration: The "Euro-style demo" has evolved from a subculture of the 80s to a form of art that we already supported with cash and hardware prizes on the legendary Mekka&Symposium parties. Mekka&Symposium will not take place this year. The same experienced team that was responsible for these parties organizes the Breakpoint Party on Easter this year. It'll take place in Bingen, Germany. `26.Feb.2003` Satra Systems	Data base: SatraDB for AmigaOS 4.x only The data base management system for Amiga 'SatraDB' is under development for quite a while already. Because it is a hobby project progress was reported only rare. AmigaOne and AmigaOS 4 will arrive soon. Therefore the development team has decided to abandon the version for Classic-Amiga and develop SatraDB for the new system only. AmiGBG is an Amiga fair, organized by Amiga users, it is the only Swedish Amiga show. AmiGBG 2002 was the first Amiga fair in Sweden since 1998 and had over 450 visitors. We hope to be able to present, among other things, a complete version of the new AmigaOS - OS4 - running on the new PowerPC based hardware - AmigaOne. `24.Feb.2003` A.D.A.	New in A.D.A. archives: 'Wild/Anadune and near Kolor' and 'Phenomeno 'Amiga Demoscene Archives' now contains the following new demos: Wild/Anadune and Nah Kolor. Yes! Probably Lazur's best slideshow and amongst the best slideshows ever! Wonderful presentation, nice music and stunning pictures. Released in 1996. Highly recommended! Phenomenon/DCS. This could have been a killer demo but it is somewhat spoiled by the slow and long 3D scene in the first part. Still, a beautiful demo from one of the most talented teams in the Amiga demoscene. With permission from the developers, who now call themselves bluelemon, Amiga Arena exclusively facilitates the free release of Beambender. Beambender mixes action, thinking and skill elements. The goal of the game is to hit all exits (target points of a laser beam) in their respective colour with the help of various components (mirrors and colour changers). We hope that this letter will assist you in understanding more clearly the direction of the Company. Please feel free to respond directly to us at bbrv@genesi.lu with your questions. If you understand and share our vision, you can adjust your effort to become more relevant to our corporate framework if you desire. As we have said before, Genesi stands on the verge of enormous opportunity. We can provide a completely integrated solution, including hardware, operating system, and a number of (bundled and unbundled) applications. We can innovate in ways that involve the complete integrated package, rather than being limited to new developments within each level by third parties (HP and Microsoft are not as self-reliant in this way). Genesi and our associates need to leverage this advantage fully. We are smaller, faster and will be necessarily more adventurous in our efforts. Do not hesitate to share your most creativity ideas with these mailing lists. Together, we believe we can create a substantial and long awaited change to the IT marketplace. In the first BIG opportunity to our Company, we are required to develop using a PPC and MorphOS, a terrestrial Digital Television receiver with interactive/computing and smart card read and write functions (to be referred to as the DTV STB). This product will not require the use of the Articia and we will be producing significant quantities in the development phase and a special version of MorphOS (without hurting the complete version). If we deliver the DTV STB in a satisfactory manner we will be eligible to receive orders for over one million units. It is a once-in-a-lifetime professional opportunity for all of us. We need to make the most of it. Of course, none of this would be possible without the years of dedication required to bring the Pegasos and MorphOS to where it is today. We are all proud to be associated with the bplan guys. The difficulties over the last year have nothing to do with them. It is the Articia from Mai Logic that has caused us months of delays. It does not perform to the advertised specifications. Thankfully, Gerald and Thomas tested and mounted the Aritica on the April2. That is right -- the April2. The first patch that Gerald and Thomas developed works as we know, but there were still bugs. The new Articia (and Teron) is still very likely to have trouble as more problems were detected after the Aachen Show and well after the joint work Gerald did with for the new Articia in October and November with Mai. The April2 brings the Articia fully to the performance levels it claims to achieve. We have purchased the remaining worldwide supply of the old Articias and will make 400 more Pegasos main boards with the G3 CPU. Our G3 Pegasos performs better than the G4 Teron with the Articia. This will be common knowledge soon (let the others understand this on their own our word will stand as testimony to our knowledge and skill). Once produced, we will stop (we may license production of this version of the Pegasos to Plexuscom or others). These machines will easily satisfy the Amiga market and give us the machines we need to seed our developer base while Gerald and Thomas switch out the old Articia to a much more attractive alternative (details later). This could be ready by the summer. The RAM speed of the Pegasos will be as high as any offered in the market and this WILL attract considerable interest. The DTV STB revenue can carry us until this point (remember this IS a business we hope you Developers begin to remember this!). To repeat a few words from an earlier communication? If our strategic vision is compelling and our execution excellent, we will increasingly attract skilled developers. What Ralph, Frank and the core MorphOS Development Team have accomplished to date is exceptional, but now we need to establish a professional development and management system for MorphOS, formally retain the services of all key MorphOS developers, and recruit new talent to the project. We have struck on the Phoenix association to develop a vehicle to do this. All registered Phoenix members must use a special Phoenix logon and password to have access to the reduced Pegasos pricing that will be available through www.pegasos-usa.com. We need to be somewhat selective in insuring that these next boards go to people that will advance in communion with our effort and our internal developers and Phoenix members will have priority. We will also develop the User Group program next week and a system for handling Pegasos sales so our Distributors also benefit. Our targeted resource/sales markets from the near to medium term are: 1. Amiga/MorphOS 2. DTV STB 3. LinuxPPC and OtherPPC We will continue to promote to the Amiga/MorphOS market, as we have. Our underlying focus should be: broadening and stabilizing MorphOS, attracting applications and drivers (ports/original programs), and establishing a Pegasos toolkit. At the same time, www.pegasos-usa.com is working and our online sales support and information site at www.genesi-support.com will continue to improve. If we are lucky we will awaken and attract the slumbering ex-Commodore consumer market, but that will take some time and we are not quite ready for mass-market attention. The sites will be there and ready. Until we are ready with the Pegasos II we will not promote the sites as much as we could. Plus, we will standardize the Pegasos distribution network over the next few months taking a semi-franchise approach. When we are ready, everything will be in place. On the hardware side we start where we are: the Pegasos. We have discussed the features: upgradeable, scalable, modifiable (smaller eclipsis, subsets/modular Psylent/STB), and open, as in Open Firmware (facilitates scheme for peripheral association/development IAW the IE1275 standard). We will develop a solid plan and feature set for each Pegasos envisioned and the corresponding software bundles. The management review that took place this week was very successful. We have defined and agreed to our objectives and are now preparing a solid plan for the future. NOTE: for 200 Euros and trade-in ALL Pegasos I Users (includes Betatesters) WILL be able to upgrade to the Pegasos II (just to put an end to that FUD!). About Linux and the other targets? OS4 too -- ;-) Linux people usually want something great for nothing, but in the PPC market if we can get a design win over the Teron the next price point is a Mac. As more professionals and desktop consumers switch to Linux, the future of commercial software on Linux is very bright and so is our hardware. Functionality will become precedent over cost in this market. We need a bootable bundled distro and Mac-on-Linux. Linux will be a major force in the future. Today, it is still difficult to install software, drivers, set up firewalls, etc., but because of the generous licensing environment and the massive corporate support Linux is gaining (IBM, HP, etc.) as well as government mandates and funding in many countries, it is set to become the "next big thing". We need to be part of that trend. Any PPC OS that is reasonable to port with external resources is interesting to us. We need a Go/NoGo decision matrix. Again, we are looking for resources and developer talent. For example, while Linux gets the glory, BSDs are running some of the biggest sites. We have seen the first screenshots of OpenBSD running on the Pegasos. Further, there is an increasing amount of interesting open source projects we could find a way to adapt to our use. Finally, we are interested in restoring the Demo Scene to the Pegasos. The traditional and overt message in a demo was technical skill. The visual effects pushed the supposed limits of the platform's capability and graphics were skillfully executed. Good demos are the marriage of advanced technical, creative and artistic abilities. For the future, we need a new generation of Sceners to be pulling the most from the platform and the OS. This can generate plenty of positive attention. Besides the nVidia butterfly lady has the wrong color wings! This is why we decided to sponsor Equinoxe. All these other things all ultimately bring us back to our key advantage: a completely integrated solution, including hardware, operating system, and applications. Management is working hard to turn this vision into a reality. While the sale of the Pegasos and MorphOS alone could never sustain the Company we are building, it may one day in the future. `22.Feb.2003` AMIGAplus	Artwork from Visualice at GFXZONE There are quite a few sceners that have been around for a long time, but few have been as active as Visualice used to be. This guy has worked on a staggering amount of demoscene productions. Unfortunately for us Visualice recently left Haujobb to concentrate on other forms of art. We have updated his personal gallery on the gfxzone with plenty of high-quality graphics. The updated gallery consists of 5 parts with 100 images in total, most of which are now finally available in their full PNG quality for the first time ever (thanks Timo!!). Older images are in the first parts of the gallery, more recent images can be found nearer to the end. To show that Visualice is also graphically active in a non-digital way, the fourth part of the gallery shows sketches. The economical structuring is very specific. You manufacture finished products using various raw materials which go through your production processes. All these manufacturing systems are highly detailed and visually understandable, enabling fast and dependable control of your economy. You decide where and how merchandise will be transported on the network of streets which you yourself have planned and constructed. AmiStart is a start menu similar to that found in Microsoft Windows, with a quick launchbar, drag&drop support and a reconfigurable graphic overlay which allows transparency, rounded corners, background textures, a shape layer (with reconfigurable and programmable skins controllable by external applications via ARexx). One example is the shape layer of Songplayer. Because the author has some time, he is interested in knowing if there is interest in further development of AmiStart and, if so, how strong this interest is. `19.Feb.2003` Christoph Gutjahr (ANF)	Interview with Ben Hermans In the light of some rumours currently circulating (regarding the status of AmigaOS 4) and the recent announcement of the partnership with SciTech, we contacted Ben Hermans (Managing partner of Hyperion Entertainment, AmigaOS 4 project manager) and did a short interview. Amiga-News: There's a rumor that OS4 is further delayed because Amiga Inc. are unable to contribute money to the project. Does your business plan rely on financial contributions from Amiga Inc.? Ben Hermans: No, it doesn't. It has to be recognized however that software development costs money and that more money means more development resources and hence a shorter development cycle. Amiga-News: You have to pay three senior developers, and the only known source of income for Hyperion during the last 15 months was the work on the Teron/AmigaOne BIOS (and Quake 2 of course, but that probably made just enough money to buy Steffen a Pizza). What/who pays the wages of your developers? Ben Hermans: Contract work as you pointed out. Our work for Mai is ongoing and has been quite extensive. There always will be new chipsets to support, new CPU's to support, Linux related work to be done etc. We just delivered a substantially upgraded firmware for the AmigaOne/Teron hardware. More news on this will follow. During the OS4 development cycle we also ported two Mac games (Nobody Lives Forever and Gorky 17), which brought in revenue. Amiga-News: Still, the idea that you'll have to acquire additional funds if OS4 gets delayed some more makes sense. Your only option to acquire more funds would be to assign senior developers to other projects. In other words, if you don't match your current dead-line, OS4 will get even further delayed because the Friedens and/or Steffen Häuser would have to work on some Mac-Ports or contract work not related to OS4. right? Ben Hermans: Absolutely. In fact, I dare say that if we had been in a position to concentrate solely on OS 4 during the past 15 months, OS 4 might already have been finished. Amiga-News: Could you explain the legal status of AmigaOS4 to us? You said you "own" it,and Amiga Inc. are entitled to buy it back at a (quote) "very reasonable price". Is Amiga Inc.'s right to buy the OS back transferable, i.e. could they sell it to a third party? What happens if Amiga go bankrupt, would you still be able to sell the OS as AmigaOS? Would the party that acquires Amiga Inc.'s assets also acquire the right to buy AmigaOS4? Ben Hermans: Our contract with Amiga does indeed contain an IP buy-back clause, which means that Amiga can acquire the work done by us on OS 4. Once Amiga has acquired the rights to OS 4, theoretically a third party might buy it from them but certainly not with a view to burry it and halt development. If no new version of OS 4 is released within 6 months after release of OS 4, our right to develop the OS further and indefinitely relives. If Amiga goes bankrupt, our license is commuted to an exclusive license to develop AmigaOS further, for any platform, not just PPC. This legally excludes a potential new owner from exploiting the source-code himself. There is therefore nothing to be gained from buying Amiga's assets in the event of bankruptcy unless the new owner is willing to work with the OS 4 development team in good faith. Amiga-News: Could you try to describe the current status of OS4 without using phrases like "everything's right on track" and "99% finished"? Is the integration of the 68k emulator finished? Are there external beta testers running ExecSG on their system? Ben Hermans: We are now down to 8 outstanding items of the feature-list we released some time ago. Only one of these issues is a show-stopper in the sense that it could introduce further delays (the emulation integration), the remaining issues are minor, several of which will be taken care of still this month. By way of example: InstallerNG, one of those 8 items I mentioned. It is not finished yet. This won't hold up release of OS 4 as we can always switch back to the old Commodore installer. Another example: one Reaction class still needs to be taken care of. We are confident this will happen still this month. There are more of these minor issues, 8 in all like I said. We are still working on the emulation integration. Unfortunately the external developer working on it had several pressing personal and professional issues to take care of which resulted in some delay. This is one of those instances where a bigger budget would certainly have helped. We nonetheless hope to wrap this up very soon as the work is now in such a state that full-time Hyperion developers can step in and take over. Exec SG unsurprisingly sports all the functionality listed in the feature-list as already implemented. Several developers have access to it and are running it on their Cyberstorm PPC and AmigaOne hardware in order to develop device drivers. Meanwhile a team of 77 beta-testers and translators have been testing and localizing OS 4 components since many months now. Amiga-News: The Alt-WOA scheduled for the 26th of April has been cancelled recently, because of the fact that "OS4 may not be ready by then". Were you involved in that decision? What does "not ready" mean in this context: "not ready for sale" or "not ready for demonstration"? Ben Hermans: The organizers demanded ironclad guarantees that OS 4-A1 combo would be on sale at that time. As a matter of principle, I informed them that the only way we could guarantee that now, would be for OS 4 to be ready NOW. It is not and I therefore declined to give them this guarantee as a matter of principle. Huge corporations like Microsoft (Windows 95 released in 96 and Windows XP ring a bell?) and Intel (Merced/Itanium anyone?) with budgets larger than the gross product of most third world countries have missed their deadlines as a matter of course. It is simply unrealistic to expect a 100% guarantee. Life doesn't work that way. Not for Microsoft, not for Intel or Sun and certainly not for a small company like Hyperion. Do I expect that OS 4 will be ready by that time? I most certainly do, based on the information available to me at this point. But it would be intellectually dishonest to claim that I can guarantee that 100%, I have been in the business too long now. Amiga-News: What kind of development tools can we expect for OS 4? Ben Hermans: Development for OS 4 will initially need to take place with a barebones GCC. We already have Linux based cross-compilers as well as an OS 3.x based cross-compiler. Moreover, Olaf Barthel has been working hard on a completely AmigaOS native GCC implementation which does not require ixemul and instead uses his own C runtime library. We also hope to convince the VBCC maintainers to produce an AmigaOS 4.x version. Amiga-News: Your partnership with SciTech was a positive surprise to most users. But supporting 180 different graphics chipsets definitely sounds like overkill if you would be only targeting desktop users. Is this partnership a first step to make AmigaOS more interesting for "embedded" appliances, like kiosk systems or Infochannel services? Ben Hermans: The partnership with SciTech has several very important advantages. First of all, we are assured that we will always have access to 2D drivers for the latest graphics cards. SciTech's expertise in this area is unrivalled and the manpower they can bring to bear is unmatched. SciTech has built up close relations with many graphics card manufacturers over the years. They can get hold of the required chipset documentation much easier than anyone else. This partnership essentially frees us from the job of ever having to write 2D drivers again and instead allows us to redirect resources elsewhere. Secondly, Hyperion and SciTech will work together on 3D drivers. SciTech recognizes our expertise in this area and combined with their know-how, chipset documentation and development resources we can be similarly cut down on development time for 3D drivers. Thirdly, your point about embedded systems is very valid. You don't need well over 170 chipsets to be supported for a desktop OS although choice is always a good thing. In the embedded space however choice may well be crucial when it comes to deciding which embedded OS to choose. There are a number of chipset producers competing in this space which won't win any prices for performance but certainly for cost-effectiveness and low power-consumption. When you are dealing with embedded devices, you are dealing with high volume productions. It's not hard to understand that saving say 10 USD per unit on the graphics chipset translates into massive savings when you are dealing with a production run of several thousand devices. Likewise, some devices may well demand low power-consumption for various reasons (cramped housing, hot environment or simply energy conservation). For such devices too a wide choice of chipsets may well tilt the balance in favor of a specific embedded OS. Let me give one final example: kiosk and information systems. We know of well upwards of a thousand Amiga based systems still in use for this type of technology all over the world. These people are looking for a way to upgrade their aging systems but they are not satisfied with the TV Out quality produced by most current graphics cards except Matrox. By adopting SNAP, we are giving them that option. Amiga-News: Some people were concerned about the way SciTech's SNAP technology gets integrated into AmigaOS. Will programmers have to deal with a completely new API, or even two independent APIs? Ben Hermans: No, the idea is that SNAP operates solely as a display driver, a monitor driver for Picasso 96. Amiga-News: Will SNAP display drivers be any slower than "native" AmigaOS drivers? SciTech seem to be using an OS independent binary format. Ben Hermans: As some benchmarks on SciTech's site show, SNAP is fully accelerated and quite frequently outperforms the "official" drivers. We have no concerns whatsoever in this area. Amiga-News: Given your tight resources, SNAP will certainly not be included with OS4.0, will it? When can we expect SciTech's technology to be available for AmigaOS4? What kind of display drivers will be included with AmigaOS4.0? Ben Hermans: SNAP relies on the SciTech x86 Bios emulator. This is embedded in the AmigaOne firmware but not present in the Cyberstorm PPC for instance. We are still examining whether it makes sense to have the x86 Bios emulator present also for the BlizzardPPC or Cyberstorm PPC. This may well not be the case as it is very CPU intensive. Moreover, due to the very limited bandwidth on the Amiga classic, operating state of the art graphics cards (to the extent that they even exist in PCI form) can be considered overkill. Having said that, Forefront Technologies is still working on "native" P96 drivers for the Radeon range and they are making good progress. We don't see any overriding reason why SNAP cannot be included with the AmigaOne version of AmigaOS 4.0. SciTech will migrate the codebase to Linux PPC (thus ridding us of any potential endian conflicts) and we will take it from there. This should be a fairly trivial job for a company which specializes in porting software from one architecture to another and from one CPU family to another. Amiga-News: Is there anything you want to say in closing? Ben Hermans: Yes, I want to thank everyone for their patience. I realize that it has been a long wait and that the wait is still not entirely over yet. On the other hand, I want to emphasize again the massive amount of work that was accomplished over these past 15 months. For the first time since the demise of Commodore, the entire AmigaOS source-code has been consolidated in one central CVS repository. A maintainer has been assigned for nearly every OS module. The old Commodore "bug and improvement suggestion" database is available to the OS developers. We have replacements for all still relevant Kickstart 3.1 modules and have implemented nearly all of the functionality outlined in the features document. This includes a 12-bit-ADC-Microchip, with which one can accomplish theoretically 250,000 voltage measurements per second. This chip is propelled of a 4.19 MHz quartz. The product will soon contain a universal voltmeter commodity and possibly, if I am able to program it, a storage oscilloscope commodity. A test software for Siegners hardware is already available. `15.Feb.2003` st-computer	TKR LAM200E: DSL direct with the Amiga? The company TKR from Kiel offers with the LAM200E by LG Electronics a DSL modem that has the PPPoE driver already integrated. So you can theoretically use DSL directly with operating systems like AmigaOS or MorphOS without having to go the detour via a router, the X-Surf or the not available MiamiDX - though an Ethernet interface must exist on the Amiga or compatible as the modem is connected via this. The configuration of the driver is done externally via a webbrowser. In conjunction with an Amiga it isn't tested right now - so it's pure theory. The AMIGAplus will try to get a sample of the LAM200E and release a review in the AMIGAplus 03/2003. The LAM200E owns additionally an integrated router. Connected to a network hub several computers can connect to the internet via the modem. The LAM200E costs EUR 99,90. Bargains in conjunction with subscriptions are possible. As soon as this prototype successfully passes all neccessary tests, producing the first batch of production stage UltraBUS boards shouldn't be delayed any further. This prototype already has all basic features of the final product - including the 512k FlashROM and the very promising 16bit mode which should not only show remarkably reduced overhead on the target system in certain cases, but also result in a noticable improvement of performance on lower specced systems. As most know, because we heard nothing from the katodev team for a very, very long time and having made many, many attempts to get a reply, we were forced to face the fact that, even with all their failed deadlines and promises, they have let us, and you, down badly. HOWEVER, Gerd Frank of AmiAtlas fame has decided to take over work on V2, he is having to start from scratch, so give him plenty of time, but he assures us that, (unlike katodev), he will do his utmost to get a new Amiga V2 built and if it is possible, we won't have to wait until human beings step on Mars :) However, if things do go badly, you 'will' be told and not kept in the dark as to the possible future of a new Amiga V2 release, so check this page every couple of months from now on. `13.Feb.2003` Christoph Gutjahr (ANF)	Eyetech: Status Update Concerning AmigaOne-XE Alan Redhouse (Eyetech Group Ltd.) talked about the status of the AmigaOne-XE on the AmigaOne mailing list (see title link). Here's a summary of the most important information related to that, from Christoph Gutjahr. More AmigaOne-XE computers and G4 modules have been produced than the number of preorders. The motherboards are currently in Taiwan. When they get the okay from the testers these boards will be equipped with AmigaOne-ROMs and sent to Europe. Redhouse goes on to say that these boards will leave the factory in the direction of Europe on the 24th of this month. It takes about 4 days for the computers to reach Eyetech from Taiwan. Eyetech themselves can then test about 40 to 50 boards daily, assign a serial number, and "put them in the mail." The G4 modules for the AmigaOne-XE machines include a PPC processor of type 7451 (G4) at 800 MHz, 32 KB +32 KB L1 Cache, 256 KB L2 Cache and 2 MB 64/72 Bit L3 Cache. And a lot of the time we have allocated for that unfortunately has to be spent defusing unfounded false allegations of one sort or another. Speaking of websites some of the developers have put up a new A1-linux site at sourceforge which is well worth a checkout at http://amigaone-linux.sourceforge.net Status update (Get the fire extinguishers ready!) Enough A1-XE's and G4 modules (800MHz 7451 with 32+32k L1; 256 L2 & 2M 64/72bit L3) to more than satisfy all earlybird orders have already been built and are currently in Tiawan waiting to ship. All these boards are fitted with the new Articia chipset (date code 0103). We received a number (more than several, less than lots) of these boards three weeks ago, but only received the cpu modules early last week, and the modified UBoot code (to initialise the 7451) last Thursday. After going through our own tests all these initial boards/cpu's have now been shipped by us to those volunteer developers (and Hyperion) who have existing experience of running the A1-SE under linux. This is so that they can spend a week or so making sure that the various PPC Linux distributions run well on with the G4 cpu and that no further modifications to the initialisation code in UBoot are required. I am visiting the manufacturers in Tiawan next week (2 days travel/recovery each way) so don't expect much more from me until the week after. We should have had the green light from the A1-XE/g4 board users by then which in turn means that we can give the green light to the factory to blow the final ROM's and ship the boards by 24th. Shipment to us will take around 4 working days, and we should be able to test, serial number, order process and despatch around 40-50 boards/day. First boards will go to the original - March last year :-( - developers who have opted to wait for the A1-XE/G4, then to dealers and customers in chronological order. These are of course target dates, and cannot possibly be taken as a promise or guarantee. All I can say is that we are as keen to have your money as you are to spend it, and do not, and never have had any intention of deliberately holding back shipments just to be awkward (as some people seem to think). However we will not as of policy ship any product before we are satisfied that it is fully functional - including an installable and working operating system - other than to developers for testing purposes. The AmigaOne and Teron series of motherboards are new technology in the 'unbundled' - ie non-mac/non-RS6000 - marketplace. That is why it has taken some time - and a lot longer than any of the parties involved anticipated - to get the A1 into your hands in a usable condition - albeit with Linux at this stage. I am sufficiently confident that the developers will be very impressed by the new A1-XE/G4 that I'm sure that they will want to start posting their findings here from early next week. BTW I'm sure that many of you will have seen H-J Frieden's posting on running SIN on a Duron 1200MHz vs an A1XE/G4@800MHz(no L3 cache), both under Linux, both with software rendering. He got 2x the frame rate from the A1 than from the Duron, and that was without any use of the Altivec processor in the A1. Imagine what it will be like with OS4. HP was also able to begin this great success in the PDA market in 2002. As the worldwide #1 in the Windows Pocket PC market HP has reached a market share of 52 percent, according to previous statistics from Gartner Dataquest. These numbers show a steady growth in market share by HP for all four quarters in the last year, thereby remaining the second largest producer of PDAs worldwide. According to the figures from Gartner HP sold about 1.6 million units in the last year. From the third to the fourth quarter HP clearly grew more quickly than the market in general, with sales growing from 292,850 in the third quarter to 438,069 in the fourth. From there HP was able to break the three million mark and show a thoroughly successful result of their post-merger plans. `12.Feb.2003`	News from Paul Burkey's "Sneech" Paul Burkey writes on his Sneech-homepage: If you've been to this page before, you may have noticed the Sneech page has now been redesigned and brought into my current game development style. I've recently been working on various small scale game projects including two puzzle games called BoXiKoN and WordOMatic. These games marked a return to independent game development as well as a first entry to Windows and Pocket PC game development. I had hoped to be working on Sneech quite some time ago but the project has been pushed back so many times. I still don't have a clear timeline for Sneech development because I have so many other development commitments but I am able to clear up some details of a future for Sneech. My first aim is to recreate the Classic Sneech game almost exactly as it was on the Amiga 10 years ago. There will of course be some obvious changes, the graphics will be redrawn in True Colour (16bit/32bit) and the resolution will be doubled to 640x480 (Modern Retro Size!). There will undoubtedly be other changes but I want to try and create a Sneech game that is as faithful to the original as possible. I will also be developing this game for Pocket PC and I expect mobile phone versions also, I'm particularly interested in SmartPhone and Symbian based phones. The aim of this project is to create the ultimate retro style Snake Game across many platforms. Sneech will be available for Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, Microsoft Pocket PC and Linux and any other platforms I can get my hands on! Sneech 2 is still planned and will include many changes to the original game including Network mode and (optional) 3D/OpenGL mode. Other changes will include: Variable size game arenas, New CPU players with advanced AI, Up to 16 Worms in each game, New objects such as bridges and tunnels, New bonus items and much more. DCTC is a text-based client for the file-sharing network "Direct Connect". An early beta version of Amiga-DCTC is ready for download. Diego needs beta testers to support him in debugging the program. More information about DC (DirectConnect) may be found on the website of the manufacturer publisher's website for the Windows version. Diego shows how one may get the initial results with DCTC. A new Maintainer must also be found, one who is interested in further developing all or part of my software. The terms are that the software must continue to be publicly available on terms simlar to the ones that I've established. I will NOT agree, to release this stuff under GPL or LGPL. The skills needed are C (ANSI-C) Programming for one half of the projects and advanced Motorola 68k Assembler for the other. Additionally needed (naturally) an Amiga and a C-Compiler, possibly SAS/C, because the projects are based on this. And Motorola-Assembler, possibly the DevPac, because I used a lot of notes with the macro-functions. The PhxAss is not sufficient for most Assembler-based projects. The "earliest works" (not the MuLib Packet of course) are documented in German (...). The sources are completely backed up and available and usable, because I was always a bit concerned about backups, and rightly so. Details about the actual content of that charge were not given by Bill Buck. From a certain size of a realm onwards you need to have town guards or risk that town rebelling against you. A rebelling town can no longer be controlled. You need to send a big enough army to restore order. Rebelling towns are also easier to take over for other players of course. Soon, there will be another update that will introduce the option of taking vassals. This makes it possible to extend your power even further and ascend through the ranks towards emperor. Unfortunately, the test phase of this feature is not completed yet. The current version should also please users of a Pegasos and MorphOS. There had been a problem with registration but this is now fixed. What else is going on around Tales of Tamar? Quite a lot, actually... First and foremost, we would like to thank AmigaFuture [a German Amiga print magazine] for the new "Messenger from Tamar" feature. It appears in every issue and reports the current events on Tamar. Georg Breitsprecher sums up updates, events, tips and tricks and rank lists. We are very pleased about this co-operation with this magazine. We were also reviewed in the current issue of AmigaPlus [another German magazine]. In the four page long report, we received 6 out of 6 points. A very gratifying result. Thanks to Nico Barbat and the team. We would also like to thank the Amiga community for the award as Game Of The Year 2002, which was also hosted by AmigaPlus. Even if the sales don't show it yet, the still active Amiga users show us that it is still worthwhile to support the market. We know that there are more active users out there and we hope to convince some of you to buy this game as well :-) Meanwhile the PC version is progressing equally well. We recently received an offer from Vivendi Universal, which is a real honor for us. Vivendi Universal is a publisher of high-quality games, the whole line of Blizzard games, for example. Last but not least, we would like to point to another event. On February 28th 2003, the third Tales of Tamar con will take place at castle Hessenstein. This time, we will take it slow and just celebrate in a dignified way. Unfortunately, the event is booked out completely already, but we will report from it. Yesterday the author Grzegorz Kraszewski has released TTEngine version 6.1. Following three bugs are fixed: Font requester gadgets now remember their state after window resizing. Removed requester layout bug preventing window from opening in some circumstances. Font handle returned by TT_OpenFont() can be now shared between different system processes. `01.Feb.2003` Achim Stegemann (ANF)	AmiChess: bugfixes There's an update for AmiChess on the home page (title link) that contains some bugfixes. Small fixes in the source code. The loading of PGN files (game files) and the creating of the openings book is now possible in the PPC mode, too! So there are now limitations of the WarpOS version compared to the 68k version anymore. The archive on the Lycos server was unfortunately defective. I have now corrected this and have uploaded an unpackable archive (has been successfully tested). Sorry to all who wanted to download the archive. `01.Feb.2003` AMIGAplus Redaktion (ANF)	RPG: eVe status update In January 2003 announced Emerald Imaging, known through the adventure game 'Aqua', a new role playing game (RPG) called 'eVe'. The game will contain hand drawn scenarios and chosen music is said to improve the gaming fun. Here a current status update: Well, it's been a month since eVe was announced so it's time for a quick status update. The programming is coming along great and already the main play screen and character/collision detection etc. are working. The graphics work is moving a bit slow right now but Darko Ponos has recently signed on to help with some great graphics. Quite a bit has been done on the game design too. Hopefully within another month some screenshots of a nearly fully working version can be shown and maybe some concept artwork etc. before then.
