Amiga-inspired operating system: FriendUP 1.0.0 released as open source
The new operating system FriendUP has been released in version 1.0.0 as open source software. While not being compatible to AmigaOS, the latter did inspire it, according to its developers. FriendUP is a project of the former AROS developer Hogne Titlestad (LunaPaint), who had tried to establish an own operating system before already that was called Anubis OS. Meanwhile also the former head of Commodore UK, David Pleasance, could be won over to FriendUP (amiga-news.de reported in german). FriendUP is web-based and as such basically hardware-independent.

Below we publish the press release.

FriendUP v1.0.0 is released as open source software

After more than three years in development, the AmigaOS inspired meta operating system, Friend Unifying Platform, is released as open source software. This is a great milestone, making the OS ready for new developers who want to contribute or make Friend based software.

Friend implements AmigaOS and Tripos inspired technologies and concepts. At the same time, it has rethought the OS paradigm for the cloud. This means that this system is hardware and hardware-architecture independent, and can be used on any device that can connect to the internet and render modern web pages.

Friend Software Labs continues to develop FriendUP for a professional audience, but hopes that with this release, a community can form around it, making sure it's Amiga roots are maintained while the system evolves on its own. From here on out, the system needs to be steered towards normal users, and opens up to creative developers, designers and artists to achieve this in the coming year. It targets all UI paradigms, like VR, mobile, desktops, TVs and voice, so the project needs contributions from a diverse pool of people. (snx)

Hardware: WLAN-Modem WiFi232
The WiFi232 ceated by Paul Rickards is connected to the serial interface and emulates a Hayes modem. Unlike this, it is not used for dial-up connections into a telephone network but for providing an Internet connection via WLAN which is used to log into a mailbox via Telnet.

The developer himself produces the WLAN modem but currently is sold out. Once it is available again, he will announce it via Twitter. The price of the WLAN kit is 33 and of the pre-assembled modem 49 US-Dollar. It is not possible to preorder it. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Free Pascal: Online compiler
Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow has established a website, which can write and compile Free-Pascal source code of all Amiga systems. This site is available in two different versions:
  • This version includes an editor written in Javascript featuring syntax highlighting and other functions for modern browsers like e.g. OWB under MorphOS.
  • That second version is based on simple HTML and should also work in older browsers like IBrowse.
