PDF magazine: REV'n'GE 168 (Italian/English)
Besides the Italian original issue, the PDF magazine REV'n'GE ("Retro Emulator Vision and Game") is also available in English. The magazine's reviews compare, if available, the different ports of classic games to the various platforms of their time. Furthermore a focus is on rather unknown retro games.

The latest issue 168 contains an MSXdev24 special as well as reviews of four Amiga games: Apocalypse, Super Raid IV, Maths Adventure and Helm. (nba)

Puzzle game: Level-Editor for Pjusk
An official level editor has now been released for the recently published game Pjusk (amiga-news.de reported, video). The game, in which players have to find their way through a maze strategically, has thus gained a new creative component.

Developer Zoopendan hopes to "see lots of brilliant levels made by the community". Exciting: anyone who submits a level that makes it onto the planned expansion disc will be named in the game.

So now it's up to the community – create levels and become part of the game! (nba)

Seq 3.0: MIDI sequencer for AmigaOS 4 has been updated
The new version 3.0 of the MIDI sequencer Seq by Tuomas Hokka is now available for AmigaOS 4. This simple tool allows you to create and edit MIDI sequences and is aimed at musicians who want to use their Amiga as a compositional tool. The current update includes numerous improvements, including to the user interface and MIDI output.

All changes to version 3.0 summarised:
  • FIXED one major bug in saving project: Too many bytes were written so it was filled with zero bytes and that will break reading one integer value in the project file. This will be fixed automatically in loading project. User will be prompted to choose to save the project immediately after.
  • Fixed bugs
  • New song (long) mode to One time track, added One time banks
  • Increased number of song steps to 96, project files version increased to 9
  • Added more settings to alt/double note
  • Alt notes displayed in steps better
  • Some font sizes increased
  • Added new tooltype to set large font
  • Refactored some parts of the source code for better maintainability and to avoid bugs
Seq is offered as freeware and can be downloaded from OS4Depot. (nba)

A1200NG: New blog and release date
The British developer and distributor AmigaKit has set up a new blog for the announced ARM-based motherboard A1200NG (amiga-news.de reported) to provide information about the product.

The motherboard was originally scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2025, but the shop now lists April as the release date. The regular price for the board with a 64 GB MicroSD card is the equivalent of around 192 euros.

It is noticeable that the motherboard is referred to as "The A1200 NG" instead of the original announced "A1200NG" in various places on the blog and on the homepage. However, the project has nothing in common with the retro computer THE A1200 announced by Retro Games Ltd. and recently postponed due to legal uncertainties. (nba)

SCSI for Raspberry Pi: SCSI2Pi 5.1
Version 5.1 of the SCSI2Pi emulation software has been released. SCSI2Pi is an alternative to the well-known PiSCSI software for the PiSCSI/RaSCSI board, which brings SCSI technology to the Raspberry Pi. According to developer Uwe Seimet, the software offers optimised device emulation, higher transfer rates and numerous new functions, including tools for the SCSI initiator mode (amiga-news.de reported).

Changes in version 5.1:
  • The INQUIRY product data (vendor, product, revision) for the device type SCSG (e.g. SCSI-to-USB bridge) are configurable, just like they are for other types. The configured data replace the actual data reported by the USB device.
  • The sector cache has been optimized.
  • s2pdump in case of errors supports retries when saving/restoring hard drive images.
The software can be downloaded from the SCSI2Pi-website. (dr)

Worth a read: A history of user interface design
The Swedish technology nerd and software developer Carl Svensson analyzes the development of user interfaces in a new article on Datagubbe.se entitled "Past and Present Futures of User Interface Design" - with a special focus on futuristic interface designs of past decades.

Starting with a look at old books on user guidance and GUI design, the author asks how the often lofty visions of the future from back then (such as touchscreen workstations or holographic interfaces) have developed in reality - or not. Particular attention is paid to the question of whether today's interfaces have actually become simpler and more accessible, or whether they are merely based on new models without really being more efficient.

The blog post is both informative and tongue-in-cheek – and offers exciting insights for anyone interested in design history, interface philosophy or simply digital nostalgia. (nba)

Retro Games: new Amiga 'console' delayed, will be called "THE A1200"
Press release: As everyone knows, it has long been our intention to release a full-size sequel to THE A500 mini in Q1 of 2025. Despite the best efforts of our team and partners, this will sadly not be possible within that timeline.

Unfortunately, the ongoing legal disputes between Hyperion Entertainment and the Amiga parties are preventing us from proceeding with manufacturing. Many of you in 'The Amiga scene' will recall that Hyperion initiated legal action against the Amiga parties in 2018, and in 2019 they even tried, unsuccessfully, to challenge the release of THE A500 Mini, despite such interference being a "Hyperion Prohibited Action" under their 2009 Settlement Agreement.

Our friends at Amiga and Cloanto, who have supported us throughout the development of THEC64, THEVIC20, and THE A500 mini, have been working tirelessly to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible. However, our manufacturing and retail partners have chosen to postpone the release of our full-sized machine until the legal situation is fully resolved. We appreciate the disappointment and frustration that these delays cause, but unfortunately the situation is completely beyond our control.

In the near future, we will share more details about the machine itself, including images, features and software line-up, including one brand new game that will make its debut on the machine. We will also issue a revised release date which will be as soon as is practically possible.

Thank you for your continued patience and support. We do understand that you are as frustrated as we are. Whilst these legal issues do not directly involve us, they do of course have an effect on what we do. Everyone is working hard to resolve these issues as quickly as possible, and we believe that a resolution is in sight.

In the light of the ongoing delays, we think it's only fair to share with you that the machine is to be called... 'THE A1200'

Update: (21.03.2025, 15:00, cg)

In a statement on Facebook, Hyperion responds to the press release from Retro Games Limited (screenshot):

Hyperion Entertainment CVBA
Hi Retro Games,

As you know, Hyperion Entertainment underwent a change in ownership and management in December last year.

So far, we — the new owners and management — have not been contacted by you in any way.

That is how it is, but just to set the record straight: We have nothing against what you want to do and would be happy to start discussions.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,
Hyperion Entertainment (cg)

Following the successful releases of the two albums Piano Collection and Piano Collection II with Chris Hülsbeck (amiga-news.de reported) the pianist and music producer Patrick Nevian returns with a possible third album in the series - this time in collaboration with another legendary Amiga composer: Allister Brimble.

Brimble, known for his iconic soundtracks to games such as Alien Breed, Superfrog and Project-X, is providing a selection of his most famous works for this album. The official announcement is made via a YouTube video that gives a first teaser of the upcoming album.

Fans now have the opportunity to register their interest in a limited physical release. To be included, send an email to Patrick Nevian with the subject "Allister Brimble TPC III" by 17 April 2025 at the latest.

The following options are available:

Speed Haste: MS-DOS racing game ported to the Amiga
The fun shareware racing game Speed Haste, originally developed by NoriaWorks for MS-DOS, has now been successfully ported to the Amiga by Szilard Biro. The game, which gained great popularity in the 90s, offers classic arcade action with Formula 1 and stock car racing, twelve different vehicles and eight different tracks.

The Amiga port requires powerful hardware and at least a 68040 or 68060 processor with FPU, as well as AGA or a graphics card and 4 MB of Fast RAM. The keyboard, joystick or CD32 pad can be used for control. Due to the game's shareware status, only a few tracks and vehicles are available; registration of the game is no longer possible. Nevertheless, it is worth taking a closer look at the game and giving it a few goes.

In addition to the Amiga port published on Aminet, you need three files (SPEED.CFG, RECORDS. LST, SPEEDH.JCL and CR.JCL) from the DOS version of Speed Haste, which have to be copied into the game directory on the Amiga. (nba)

The length of one level in the CD32 version has been shortened by 20%, bringing the ISO size down to under 1CD-700MB, but it is still not recommend to play it on real hardware because of the reading speed. A bug in the AMOS animation player is being fixed, so the problem that the size of a frame cannot exceed 32 KB has been resolved. Thanks to this and the new processing method, the size of the EHB version has been significantly reduced (from 1.63 GB to 1.23 GB)!

Star Dust Wars - Director's Cut ideally requires an Amiga 1200 with a hard disc, accelerator card and Fast RAM, and can be downloaded in return for a voluntary donation. (nba)

Mouse-controlled zombie shooter: New playable demo of "BDTZ"
BDTZ ("Better Dead Than Zed", video) is a mouse-controlled shooter in which the character has to be controlled from a bird's eye view through a zombie-infested maze of streets. Ammunition is scarce and shots attract more zombies (amiga-news.de reported).

The new demo version offers a new intro, improved graphics, a newly introduced female zombie character, new sound effects and minor bug fixes. You can choose from three levels and in order to play it, you need both adf files.

The game is still in development, but two playable demos have already been released in the last two weeks. BDTZ should run on any Amiga with at least one megabyte of RAM. (dr)

Asteroids-style dogfights: Hyper Wings 2.21 (update)
Christian Geldmann's "Hyper Wings" (video) is a shooter developed in assembler, in which two human or computer-controlled combatants fight each other with a control system borrowed from Asteroids. Version 2.2 - tagged as the "final release" by the author - offers the following new features:
  • New weapon (gravity bomb): missile which creates a point of high gravity, which attracts only your opponent. Contact with that point recudes energy of your opponent.
  • problems with the speed of the intro screen solved.
  • extended main music tune
  • A new nasty gimmick, which inverts left/right of your Joystick for a short time.
  • Extended game intro
  • Bugfixes
Hyper Wings has been optimised for the Amiga 500 (1 MB RAM, OCS), but also runs on all other Amigas.

Update: (14.03.2025, 22:10, dr)

Version 2.21 offers better performance and stability. (dr)

Amiga emulator for the web: vAmigaWeb 4.0
vAmigaWeb is an Amiga emulator for web browsers or as a progressive web app. The new version is now based on the core of vAmiga 4.0 and therefore also supports "Workspaces": these are resource packages that contain the complete Amiga configuration, installed ROMs, floppy disks and hard disks and, unlike the previous "Snapshot" format, are no longer tied to specific versions of vAmiga but will work with all future versions.

In the future, it is planned to export all created workspaces to a ZIP file and import such a file so that all created configurations can be easily backed up and shared with several devices. (cg)

Music tips
To kick off the new week, we would like to present our readers with a few music tips:

The Swedish software and hardware developer 'mbitsnbites', who for example has published SoundBox, a synth music tracker and editor written in HTML5 for creating music for small JavaScript demos, had written an Amiga song called Old Fashion as a teenager in the early 90s, which he gave a "Facelifting".

One of Metin Seven's favourite Amiga tracker music modules is Piggie's Hut, released by Romeo Knight in 1993: according to Seven, it is an energetic composition that uses various heavy metal-style sound samples. And it shows that "computers don't just produce bleeps and bloops".

Tell Me Lies (video) by XCOPY was created on a Commodore Amiga with ProTracker 2.3f. As the author writes: "There is no beginning or end, you can listen on loop. Let synesthesia emerge."

'LukHash' is a musician based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He describes his music as a "fusion of digital 8-bit chaos and 80s-inspired synthesiser music, combined with modern sounds and cyberpunk aesthetics." He created his current Chiptune Raster Bar on a C64 with Evo64 and SID Wizard (plus FL Studio on the PC). And even though no Amiga was involved, it's a fantastic feel-good song. Listen to it (and buy it)! (dr)

Andrea 'afxgroup' Palmatè has adapted Robert Smith's project "DrawBridge" (amiga-news.de reported) for reading Amiga floppy disks with the help of an Arduino board so that it can now also be used under AmigaOS 4 (GitHub project page). Above all, he had to make changes to the USB communication.

There will most likely also be a commercial version of the "Waffle Reader" for a few euros, although the project will remain open source. (dr)

Turn-based strategy game: New demo version 03/25 of "Ecliptic"
Ecliptic is described by the author as "a mixture of turn based tactical combat and role playing" (amiga-news.de reported) being a visually reminiscent of the retro-futuristic science fiction of the 1970s and 1980s. Now a fifth demo has been released for the game.

As the developer reports, the game now offers three complete levels. At the start, the player can decide which one they want to begin with.

The game requires 1MB RAM, recommended is an Amiga 1200 with HD and Fast RAM. (dr)

Rogue-like game: Roguecraft 1.5
The Rogue-like game Roguecraft (video, amiga-news.de reported) has been updated to version 1.5, providing the following changes:
  • There is now a Highscore screen.
  • The high scores are saved when exiting the Highscore screen after Game Over or completing the game.
  • Faster transitions between rooms. On a stock A500 you will notice a delay after the transition, but for faster CPUs the transitions will be faster. Transition is hiding unpacking and was timed to A500. Now it is timed to A1200.
  • Some changes to the end boss to make it more of a challenge.
  • The Teleport ability of Rogue does not cost a turn anymore.
  • The Teleport ability and potion now teleports to a random door area, so it is more useful to get out of a tight situation.
  • Monsters that walk into traps actually walk into the traps instead of just getting insta-killed.
  • Added sparkles on the title screen!
  • Updated Wizard animation (less crooked back and improved walk animation)
  • Updated Gluthulhu animation (an animation was played backward in previous version)
  • Updated wall tiles for secret rooms. These should be a little more visible now!
  • Updated main font.
  • Updated some level graphics assets.
  • Some minor text tweaks where there was inconsistent casing.
  • Also fixed some gfx garbage in transitions between screens.

Video: Doom clone Grind 0.6
The Doom clone "Grind" should run on any Amiga with at least one and a half megabytes of RAM and a hard disk. The level "DevArena" shown in the video was originally created as a test area for new opponents and functions and actually serves as a stress test for the Grind engine. For this reason, at least an A1200 with Fast RAM is recommended for DevArena.

The new features of version 0.6 are listed in detail in the video description. (snx)

Flip screen platformer: Trapped in the Tomb, also as a Boxed Edition
"Trapped in the Tomb" (video) is a flip-screen platformer in which the items to be collected and the player's starting position are chosen randomly each time the game is started. The game runs on any Amiga with one megabyte of RAM and at least Kickstart 1.3, but a 68020 processor is recommended.

A download is available free of charge or for an optional donation from itch.io. A boxed edition, which is also presented in the linked video, is also available and costs 25 euros plus shipping. (cg)

Hardware project: Bluetooth-based Kickstart switch "AmigaBlueKick"
"AmigaBlueKick" is a Kickstart switch that does not require any soldering work on the motherboard or a mechanical switch: Switching between the different Kickstart ROMs is done via Bluetooth. To do this, a ready-made ESP32S3 or ESP32C3 Wifi/Bluetooth module is connected to four pins of a Kickstart EPROM (5V, ground, A18, A19). If you do not want to trigger a reset manually after every Kickstart switch, you must also connect a cable to the reset line of the Amiga.

Any Bluetooth explorer can be used for control, but the developer also offers a self-developed iOS app. The software for the Bluetooth module and the iOS app are available under a free license and the source code is available on Github. (cg)

Logic game: Untangle V1.2
Grzegorz Kraszewski is in the process of writing the logic game Untangle for the Amiga. The player has a number of dots in front of him, which are connected by lines and cross each other. The aim of the game is to untangle the lines by moving the dots so that no line intersects another (amiga-news.de reported). Version 1.2 offers 25 new levels - 200 in total - and Polish localisation.

Cross-compiler/assembler: Calypsi 5.9
"Calypsi" is a collection of compilers and assemblers that run under Windows, Linux and macOS and can generate code for various retro platforms - 6502 and 68000 processors are supported, among others. Although the project is hosted on Github, the source code is not freely available and use of the tools is only permitted for private purposes. Changes in version 5.9:
  • Addsupport for 68060 by omitting instructions not present on this variant. This includes 64-bit divide and multiply, movep, chk2, cmp2, cas2andcas`. A separate set of 68060 libraries is now included.
  • Parameter numbering in inline assembly now correctly starts the input list with %0 when there is no output.
  • Correct a code generator bug that could occur in some situations when a register variable was used twice in the same expression.
  • 6502: Incorrect offset could be used for calculations being made of an argument to a function call. There were a series of conditions for this. 1) There were other byte sized arguments stored in the zero page area later in the argument list; 2) The expression calculation accessed a local variable on the simulated C stack; and 3) Typically the expression called a library routine such as divide and multiply. In such situation the access to the local variable on the C stack could be accessed at the wrong offset.
  • MEGA65: Fixed an internal error with banked function pointers used as initializers.
  • Some code generator improvements to 6502 and MEGA65.

Antivirus software: xvs.library version 33.48
Georg Wittmann provides version 33.48 of the external virus scanner library xvs.library. Changes since the last release:
  • Fixed recognition of 'Disk-Doktors' and 'Suicide Machine' boot viruses to avoid false alarms with harmless bootblocks. The new pattern for 'Disk-Doktors' recognizes all clones too, therefore removed entries 'Disk Doktors BJH', 'Disk Doktors NoFast' and 'Magic Ultra'. Thanks to Jan Andersen of VHT-DK for the sample bootblocks.
  • Added 'Mosh 3.0' bootvirus. Thanks to Crashdisk for sending it.
  • Added 'Silicon Penetration' bootvirus (actually just a malicious bootblock formatting the disk). Thanks again to Crashdisk for sending that stuff.
  • Fixed recognition of 'Xeno' linkviruses to find modified copies too. Thanks again to Crashdisk for the report and an example file.
  • Fixed recognition of 'Traveling Jack' linkvirus, the shortest strain hasn't been detected correctly. Thanks once again to Crashdisk for the example file.
  • Removed 'Adam Brierley' from the bootvirus brain. This bootblock actually is just some kind of boot-loader and harmless. Thanks to Jan Andersen for the report.
  • Fixed recognition of 'VKill' bootvirus to detect damaged copies too that will crash, but at least install parts in memory. Thanks again to Jan Andersen for the example bootblock.
  • Added 'Disk-Doktors 2' bootvirus. This is a fixed version of the original virus that works with all Kickstart releases. Thanks to Crashdisk again for the sample.
  • Fixed recognition of 'XCopy2' bootvirus to detect modified copies too. Actually this isn't a real virus as it cannot spread, but it modifies pointers and though can be harmful for other programs. Thanks to Crashdisk once again for sending the sample.
  • Added 'Nemesis' bootvirus. This one I got from Crashdisk too.
  • Added 'Warhawk 1 Aniga' bootvirus, another Warhawk clone found by Crashdisk.

AmigaOS 4: GemRB RPG package 0.8.8
Press release (translation): Steffen Häuser and Alinea Computer are very pleased to present the GemRB RPG package version 0.8.8 for AmigaOS 4. Steffen Häuser is responsible for the porting and the easy installation.

GemRB makes it possible to play the famous PC role-playing games Baldur's Gate 1, Baldur's Gate 2 (called "the best PC role-playing game of all time" by many), Icewind Dale 1 and Planescape: Torment on an Amiga equipped with AmigaOS 4.

Original data from the PC version (on CD or DVD) is required for installation. A PC is not required, the installer makes it possible to install the four games directly on the Amiga. An installation of "Gog" data is also possible as an alternative, but then a "pre-installation" on a PC is necessary - which is why the CD/DVD installation is recommended, as a PC is not required then.

This version of GemRB is based on GemRB 0.8.8 and contains many bug fixes compared to the older version 0.7.2. No manual installation of libraries or editing of configuration files is necessary - the included installer takes care of everything.

This new version is highly optimized and also contains executable files that are specially optimized for certain Amiga models. The following frame rates are achieved:
  • AmigaOne x5000 2 GHz - 30 fps at 1024x768
  • AmigaOne x1000 1,8 GHz - 25 fps at 800x600
  • AmigaOne A1222 1,2 GHz - 18 fps at 640x480
  • Sam 440 666 MHz - 15 fps at 640x480
  • MicroAmigaOne 800 MHz - 10 fps at 640x480
Special versions exist for the x5000, x1000, Sam 440, Sam 460 and A1222 models, plus an executable file that runs on all systems. The minimum configuration is a Sam 440, the recommended configuration is a Sam 460 or higher.

The add-ons "BG1: Tales of the Swordcoast", "BG2: Throne of Bhaal" and "IWD: Heart of Winter" are also playable (and can be installed using the installer).

The games were tested with the German, English, multi-language (German, English, French, Italian, Spanish) and Polish versions. The versions of BG1, BG2 and ID1 on the Computerbild games cover DVD (bg1:12/2008, bg2:12/2008 Gold and id1:03/2009) and of Torment on the GameStar cover DVD (07/2006) can also be installed with the installer.

In addition to the AmigaOS 4 version, a WarpOS version will be released soon as well, which has already been successfully tested with 25 fps (640x480) on a Ragnarök PCI-PPC card overclocked to 1 GHz. Whether it is possible to create a version for PiStorm and Vampire is still being evaluated.

The game package is available as a digital download from the Alinea Computer online store at the title link.
