Interview with Robert Koon (Amiga conversion of Dune II)
In another interview by Spillhistorie, Hans Arne Jacobsen spoke this time with Robert Koon, one of the developers involved in the Amiga conversion of Westwood's strategy classic Dune II. He is currently working on a new version, which should eliminate the limitations of the DOS original (amiga-news.de reported).
As the programmer explains among other things, he also intended to re-enter Amiga development with this undertaking - there would be several other projects that he wants to implement afterwards. (snx)

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.20, Firmware 1.6
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks.
The new Greaseweazle firmware 1.6 provides the following changes:
- Flux write: Whole-track writes to hard-sectored disks
- Pre- and post-write delays: Specified by many drive datasheets
- Required for correct interaction with offset tunnel-erase heads
- Configurable "Index Mask", for debouncing noisy INDEX signals
- Seek (HDD): Remove arbitrary 100-cylinder limit
Version 1.20 of Greaseweazle Tools provides the following changes:
- Thomson MO/TO: thomson.xxx formats and xxx.fd images
- DMK: Import-only image support
- EDSK: HD and ED recording rates
- gw delays: Pre- and post-write; Index mask
- gw read, write: New option --hard-sectors

Jump'n Run: CD32 version of Boxx series, cheats for all four parts
About a year ago the developer 'Lemming880' released updates for the three parts of his Boxx remake series as well as for the fourth part (amiga-news.de reported). Turn-based strategy game: New demo version of "Ecliptic"
Ecliptic is described by the author as "a mixture of turn based tactical combat and role playing" (amiga-news.de reported) being a visually reminiscent of the retro-futuristic science fiction of the 1970s and 1980s. Now a fourth demo has been released for the game as lha archive.
As the developer reports, the game now makes full use of EHB mode (in German). The chip RAM management has also been changed so that the game should no longer slow down on an A500 with 512 chip RAM.
In addition, the "combat rules" of the game have been revised: the hit points and damage caused by weapons have been simplified and are hopefully better balanced. The robots should also feel different now.
The game requires 1MB RAM, recommended is an Amiga 1200 with HD and Fast RAM. (dr)

Sprite/Icon/Map editor: Raster Master v4.3 R110 for Windows 10/11
Raster Master is a sprite/icon/map editor for Windows 10/11 which generates RayLib-, PutImagedata and Map code for gcc, AmigaBASIC, Amiga C, Amiga Pascal, QuickBasic, QB64, Quick C, Turbo Pascal, freepascal, Turbo C, Turbo Basic, Power Basic, FreeBASIC, GWBASIC, BASICA, and PC-BASIC.
Numerous changes have been made since our last news item. For example, a sound generator (SFXR) has been added to Raster Master, which allows users to create simple sounds for their games. Sprites can now also be exported to the clipboard and as PNG files.
With the current version 4.3, the Sprite Animation entry has been added to the Tools menu. This allows you to create a sequence of sprites in the Sprite Editor and arrange them in the Sprite Animation sub program to see how they look. The animation can also be exported to a series of PNG files. Many sprite sheets contain animated characters that can be imported into RM using Sprite Sheet Import and previewed using Sprite Animation (YouTube video).
According to the developer, this was the last major component to be finalised. RM is now "useable program to create/import assets for simple 2D games".

Retro Supplies: Four new hardware products
After Andrew 'LinuxJedi' Hutching presented updates for existing hardware projects at the beginning of July (amiga-news.de reported), he is now presenting four new developments:
ZonKEY is a replacement for the 6570 keyboard controller IC used in all models of Amiga 500 keyboards. It contains firmware that Hutching rewrote from scratch using the Amiga hardware manuals and reverse engineering the original chip.
DoohicKEY is a complete keyboard controller replacement board for the Amiga 500 Mitsumi keyboards, which is the most common type of keyboard for the Amiga 500. It uses the same base firmware as ZonKEY and offers additional features such as a two-colour LED (orange/green) for drive indication: orange for FDD activity and optional green for HDD activity.
It uses 100% new parts, even the LEDs are new, with specially designed 3D printed lenses that fit into the Amiga case.
Zinc is the 30pin SIMM version of the 72pin Hafnium diagnostic board which he launched earlier this year: it can be used to determine which RAM tracks on a motherboard have been damaged by a battery.
RGBtoHDMI board for the Amiga 500 enables pixel-perfect HDMI output from the Amiga 500 using a Raspberry Pi Zero (not included). This new version is low enough to keep the HDMI connector and board far away from the accelerator. (dr)

Tutorials for AmigaOS 4: Setting up an IDE, transferring software
With Kea Campus, Hans De Ruiter has started a membership programme in which software and electronics tasks are to be discussed and solved (amiga-news.de reported). As announced, he has also set up an Amiga corner on YouTube, in which instructions etc. are published at different times.
After his first article about setting up a cross-compiler for AmigaOS 4 (amiga-news.de reported), he has deepened this topic:
In the following article, he explains how to set up a code editor or integrated development environment (IDE) for cross-compiling to AmigaOS using Visual Studio Code as an example (YouTube video).
In the third part published yesterday, he shows how to copy the software created with it quickly and efficiently to an Amiga (YouTube video).

Hollywood: SID plugin 2.0
Press release: Airsoft Softwair, the hardest working men in code business, are back on your screen with version 2.0 of the SID plugin for Hollywood. Once this plugin is installed, Hollywood will "automagically" be able to play SID files just like any other audio file. Version 2.0 is a major update which now uses completely different SID core.
Version 1.x of the SID plugin was based on the rather outdated TinySID core whereas version 2 now uses the state-of-the-art cRSID replayer written by Hermit (Mihaly Horvath) which features a much more accurate SID emulation that also supports the RSID format (Real SID). Additionally, version 2.0 comes with several other new features like the possibility to set the SID model to emulate (6581 or 8580) and several convenience enhancements for users of Hollywood 10.
A demo applet which demonstrates the playback of a SID file is included. This applet can also be run using the freely available Hollywood Player so people who don't own the full version of Hollywood can check it out as well.
You can download the plugin from the official Hollywood portal. Thanks to Hollywood's cross-platform plugin system versions for AmigaOS3, AmigaOS4, MorphOS, WarpOS, AROS (x86), Linux (arm, ppc, x86, x64), macOS (arm64, ppc, x86, x64), Windows (x86, x64), Android and iOS are provided.
To download SID music visit the High Voltage SID Collection. (snx)

Changes in version 1.3 (beta):
- X-bEnCh.guide
- X-bEnCh.guide updated and now fully up to date
- X-bEnCh.guide updated with the Fix Fonts feature added with this release
- Xinit 4.9

Amiga emulator for macOS: vAmiga V3.0b2
Starting with version 2.6.1, developer Dirk Hoffmann made changes to the internal architecture of his Amiga emulator vAmiga for MacOS with the aim of porting the new emulator architecture of VirtualC64 v5.0 to vAmiga in order to enable features such as Run-Ahead (background article). Now he has released the second beta version of version 3, which, among others, introduces this feature. Changes compared to the first beta version:
- Inserting floppy disks failed to work for some file formats such as EXE files.
- Fixed a bug that routed some key events to the Amiga keyboard instead of RetroShell.
- The CIA panel occasionally reported idle times exceeding 100%.
The minimum system requirement for its emulator is macOS 11.0. (dr)

Motorola68k emulation: Emu68 v1.03
Michal Schulz has released an update of his Motorola68K emulation Emu68 for the ARM architecture focussing on the PiStorm and PiStorm32lite (amiga-news.de reported). Compared to version 1.0, Emu68 v1.03 offers the following changes:
- Accesses to non-existent memory areas return data other than just a 0xFF value - this avoids an error in Lha
- Update of unicam.resource to the latest version. This is used with the Framethrower (A1200) or HDaMI (A600) hardware extensions to output the Amiga's RGB image from the Pi via HDMI.
- Fixed bug in buptest where the chip ram was overwritten
- New option for cmdline.txt: z3_disable - this disables all Emu68-Zorro3 boards completely. This means: no RTG, no WiFi, no microSD hard discs

Amiga Pregnant Mouse: optical replacement board (PCB) and 3D-printed shell
For the once quite unique, now very rare 'Amiga Pregnant Mouse', which could be found mainly on the Amiga 3000 with two or three buttons, there are new spare parts for experienced, experimental do-it-yourself fans.
The PregnantLaserMouse-project on GitHub by Board Folk is a printed circuit board (PCB) project that represents an optimised, optical replacement board for this mouse. The Gerber files needed for reproduction (and further modification), a list of the required components and tools, as well as documentation, can be found on the GitHub page for the project and can be obtained free of charge.
Matching this, user Maxim7745 offers free STL files for 3D printing parts of the Amiga Pregnant Mouse as a two- or three-button variant on the printables.com platform. The top and bottom parts, ball, buttons and plug can be conveniently printed out using his data. Alternatively, Dennis van den Broek also offers parts of the Amiga Pregnant Mouse with three mouse buttons for 3D printing, but for a small fee. This way, defective parts of an existing mouse can be replaced or a completely new mouse can be 3D-printed. (nba)

Amiga emulator for macOS: vAmiga V3.0b1
Starting with version 2.6.1, developer Dirk Hoffmann made changes to the internal architecture of his Amiga emulator vAmiga for MacOS with the aim of porting the new emulator architecture of VirtualC64 v5.0 to vAmiga in order to enable features such as Run-Ahead (background article). Now he has released the first beta version of version 3, which introduces this feature. He writes about it:
"When run-ahead is enabled, two emulator instances run side by side: the primary instance and the run-ahead instance. The primary instance emulates the Amiga as usual, while the run-ahead instance runs several frames ahead and generates the image texture. Both emulator instances stay in sync with a time delay, and any changes in the primary instance, e.g., triggered by a joystick event, forces the run-ahead instance to be recreated. Run-ahead mode is meant for gaming as it considerably decreases the lag between an external event, e.g., a gamepad or keyboard event, and its recognition inside the emulator.
Accommodating this feature required significant changes to vAmiga’s architecture, resulting in a major update to the codebase. While these improvements have streamlined the internal workings of the emulator, they’ve also introduced some bugs - an expected outcome with such a substantial change."
The author therefore asks for feedback in this regard. He has also implemented the following improvements, among others:
- Snapshot compression
- Loading and saving memory contents
- Improved Headless app
- RetroShell as as serial port device
- Beamtrap debug feature
- RetroShell commands via the command line
The minimum system requirement for its emulator is macOS 11.0. (dr)

Python script: Quarterback ADF file extractor AmigaQB_extract 0.4.2
AmigaQB_extract is a Python script that aims to restore backup copies created with the Quarterback program more successfully than the original in the event of damages. For example, the catalog stored on the first and last floppy disk is no longer needed.
The disks must be available as ADF images in order to use AmigaQB_extract. Backup copies that have not been split over several disks, but saved as a single larger file, cannot be read out for now. (snx)

Interview with Jim Sachs
Following on from the double interview on Ports of Call conducted together with Hans Arne Jacobsen (amiga-news.de reported), Joachim Froholt has now spoken to Jim Sachs again for their Norwegian website “Spillhistorie” at the title link in order to trace his career.
The article begins with the former Air Force pilot's first C64 game, Saucer Attack, which he describes as a game that everyone owned but nobody bought. Regarding his first Amiga game, Defender of the Crown, Jim Sachs already explained in an earlier interview that it took him a whole week to create his first background screen with the original Amiga painting programs and that Deluxe Paint later reduced the comparable effort to three to four days.
After dropping out of his last direct project for Commodore due to conflicting specifications, and also completing "Defender of the Crown II", further stations were the CompuTrainer software for exercise bikes, which provided a corresponding racing bike landscape simulation, and especially his 3D aquarium screensavers, which were finally taken over by Microsoft and brought him to the realization that one should never do business with this company without a lawyer. Returning to the games market, though, he rules out - being born in 1949 he would be too old now for that. (snx)

Video: Compiling the Menace source code, part 1
In a first video, the YouTube channel 'Dave Poo 2' presented the commercial Shoot 'Em Up Menace, which was released in 1988. The source code was later published in several issues of the British Amiga Format magazine.
In the current video, an attempt is made to assemble the source code and then compile it. (dr)

Game Construction Kit: RedPill 0.9.42
RedPill, developed by Carlos Peris, is a game construction kit written in Amiblitz 3.99, which allows the development of games from various genres (e.g. Agonman). RedPill (YouTube video) is compatible with AGA and ECS, the "player" for playing the finished creations requires a total of 1.5 MB RAM. Jens 'Farbfinsternis' Henschel has written a tutorial.
The biggest addition of version 0.9.42 is the possibility to add UI bars to the objects, this way you can display Health, Energy, Stamina etc.
This could be very useful for RPG and strategy games, but also for other kind of games:
 |
|
Alle changes:
- UI Bar is a new type of object that allows to show energy&health bars above
the game objects. They can be attached to the object they need to represent.
- A project example ex_UIBar has been added to show the usage of this new
object type.
- Added action trigger Follow Me to allow an object request the camera focus.
- Camera triggers have been moved to the Input&Canera cathegory in the editor.
- Camera follow now has a parameter to specify if the camera should move
immediatly to the targetted object.
- Set Parent trigger now allows to target a non static object. In this case it
will attach to the first that it finds.
- Fix in the slope code that was introduced after some optimizations.
- Fix for slope peaks, where the character could move downwards in the level.
- Fix for HUD not being aligned with the main display when using a reduced
screen width.
- Fix for CD32 buttons mapping to Fire 1 and Fire 2.
- Fix for custom font when used in the HUD.
- Fix for a one pixel stripe in the left of the screen where the background
sprite layer would be visible
- Fix in FX layer
- Some unused code was removed

Preview video: Amiga port of arcade classic Elevator playable
In addition to an Amiga port of Galaga, Jean-François 'jotd' Fabre is also working on a conversion of Taito's arcade classic Elevator Action (amiga-news.de reported). The video now published under the title link shows that, apart from a few graphic errors and inaccuracies, the game logic works completely. (dr)

Developer log: First map of the game "The Gate" completed
At the beginning of October last year , we introduced the AMOS game "The Gate" by Fabio 'Allanon' Falcucci, a mixture of "Impossible Mission" and "Project Firestart" with his own ideas and concepts. The developer reports on his progress on Patreon, but has kindly summarised the current status for us:
"I spent the last 2 weeks working on the first map (Mastodon screenshot) and I have also fixed several bugs I saw only during the map testing phase. I also added some missing functionalities to the engine to make easier for me to create and handle the game contents, here is a list of the most important things:
- I've completed the 5 door types available in the game, If I need to I can add more types, nothing is hard coded anymore.
- I've optimized the game especially using graphics blocks to clear areas instead of using the slow drawing commands (BAR for example).
- I've started to work on a game editor: the initial idea was that this would helped me to create the game contents faster, but I soon realized that this would take up a lot of my time and I was anxious to see if the engine worked well, so for now I will continue to create the content manually.
- Terminals and dialogues are using a scripting language created from scratch by me, it supports strings and numeric variables, but they were local to the currently executed script. I needed some persistent space to store stuff so I implemented Map Variables (which are reset every time the map is loaded, but I can share values between map-scripts) and Global Variables (which are reset at the game beginning and can share data between script on different maps).
- In the Terminal scripting language I also added a JUMPSUB/RETURN pair of commands to recycle repetitive code sections and make the scripts smaller.
- I've adjusted all the graphics I have to make it proportional with the character's size, I've enlarged all of them manually to make pixel perfect (at my best).
- I fixed a nasty bug in my script parser: empty lines was causing dead loops blocking the program flow.
- Dialogue definitions now supports actors declaration, this means that dialogs executed by triggers can be between several actors (and not just 2!).
- Some bugs related to the secondary weapons/devices are fixed, as well as the damage computation of the hit enemies.
I'm very happy because when I finished the first map and started testing it, everything worked as intended: Dialogues followed the programmed branching, triggers worked, animations worked and most importantly, the terminal simulator worked too!
I am happy about everyone who supports my work on Patreon." (dr)
