AmigaOS 4: PFTP 0.3
Pete's FTP (creenshot) written by Peter Gordon offers unlimited windows, server-to-server-transfers and drag-and-drop-support.

Changes:
  • The check to see if a date was in the future when we had to guess the year didn't take into account the fact that the server time might be ahead of ours; the check now makes sure that the date is not more than 24 hours ahead of the local system time
  • Now built with GCC 4.2.4
  • Swapped obsolete calls to the corresponding AllocSysObject ones
  • There was one message port per subtask that wasn't being freed; they are now
  • A couple of things that were MEMF_ANY are now MEMF_SHARED
  • When I re-ordered the transfer queue columns in 0.2 I forgot to update the cancelled and finished transfer pages, which meant that the filename wasn't shown; this is now fixed
  • Finished transfers now show their final CPS
  • Re-added the stats page and now it actually has some stats in it!

Individual Computers announces new scandoubler "Indivision AGA"
Press release: During the 80s, it was common use to build computers in a way that they can output their picture on a TV set. This was done in order to reduce the overall system cost for the user. TV sets work with lower frequencies compared to today's monitors, therefore the picture flickers. A flickerfixer converts the signal in a way that a modern VGA monitor or TFT-display can be used. The name flickerfixer was mainly created because the problem of a flickering picture is solved.

We've already had a very successful product called Indivision in 2002. It was connected to the monitor output of the computer, but it has been sold out in 2006. Flickerfixers are in high demand. One unit of our external flickerfixer Indivision has been sold on an internet auction platform for more than 900 US Dollars in march of this year. That's more than four times the last retail price! The popularity and stability of value of our products cannot be proved any better. We have already started development of a new flickerfixer in november 2007, which is finished now.

The first flickerfixers for the Amiga have already been available 17 years ago. Since that time, all flickerfixers - including ours - have been using the same principle: The picture frequency was doubled. This is not enough for most modern VGA monitors and TFT-displays, as the picture of a computer with PAL standard was only displayed at slightly less than 50Hz. Most monitors require 60Hz or more these days.

With Indivision AGA, we're striking a new path. As the name suggests, it's a flickerfixer that is very closely tied to the AGA chipset. This could only be realized by putting the flickerfixer inside of the computer. The product is mounted over the Video-Chip "Lisa". The VGA display is connected directly to the flickerfixer. Further connections are not necessary.

Listing all features of the flickerfixer would go beyond the scope of this news item. You can find the complete technical data in this PDF-overview. The outstanding features are:
  • 24 Bit colour resolution in all screenmodes
  • support for super hires modes
  • Highgfx support up to 1024x768 pixels
  • all screenmodes can be displayed at 60Hz or more
  • no adjustments necessary

Two options have been added for retro-gaming enthousiasts that allow a step-by-step approximation to the display of an old TV set: Vertical syncrtonisation allows reducing the output frequency down to 49.9Hz, which will eliminate tearing-effects. In addition to that, a scanline-emulation can be switched on. This will emulate the dark lines between the scanlines of a TV screen.

Development and production of this extremely complex product is very expensive. Our trade partners, who have been serving the Amiga-market for many years, have made considerable financial contributions to the production. To account for that, Indivision AGA is exclusively available only from these resellers until january 1st, 2009: (alphabetical order)

Production has already started, the flickerfixer will presumably be shipped to our tradepartners during the first week of september. The suggested retail price is 129,- EUR including 19% VAT. Only a version for A1200 computers will be available at first. We're already working on a version for other Amigas with AGA chipset.

The following pictures show the prototype and screenshots where colours are not displayed correctly. The actual product may vary.

Bounty System opening on pegasosforum.de
After it was decided to launch a bounty system three months ago on pegasosforum.de, first of all, project suggestions were gathered, and then the five most popular bounties were determined by means of a poll. The evaluation of the received votes is now complete and the following bounty projects have been opened up:
  1. [Bounty #0007]Printing system
  2. [Bounty #0018]GTK-MUI wrapper
  3. [Bounty #0006]Spreadsheet
  4. [Bounty #0014]FTP client with SSL/SFTP/SCP
  5. [Bounty #0001]Instant Messenger

For every project, there is a support thread in the Bounty-Bay of the Pegasos forum with up-to-date status information like, for example, the state of donations, progress information, milestones reached so far, screenshots as previews of the functions implemented so far, etc.

In addition, with immediate effect, the respective bounty can be donated to via PayPal there. The donated money will be received by the AmigaClub Hamburg registered association and will be kept on the PayPal account until the payment date.

In addition to the bounties already opened, there is the possibility for everyone to suggest so-called "self-bounties." However, for these, some requirements are to be fulfilled, like the payment of a "starting donation" of at least 25 euros, for example. Further details can be gathered from the bounty rules.

Programmers that are interested in the implementation of a bounty are asked to contact the bounty team. This can be carried out via the corresponding support thread in the Bounty-Bay or via E-Mail to bounty-team@amigaclubhamburg.de. (cg) (Translation: cad)

AmigaOS 4: Cinnamon Writer 0.58
Claus Desler's Cinnamon Writer is an SDL-based word processor for AmigaOS 4 (screenshot), aiming to be compact, efficient and to provide the mostly used functions.

New version includes:
  • Experimental Printer support
  • Experimental Export PDF support
  • Improved font handling - support for unlimited fonts
  • Increased stability
  • Optimized code - CW should now be usable on Amigas with a slow CPU
  • Minor GUI changes
Please note that with this version, no fonts are provided. CW uses (all) the fonts in Fonts:_Truetype directory. CW uses Bitstream Vera Sans as default font. If you don’t have this font installed, you can download it from the fonts download area of desler.be.

CW uses truetype fonts, which can be downloaded from the internet (or taken from an old version of CW). If you have installed OWB and the fonts used by OWB, CW should be able to use these fonts.

Printer and PDF export is experimental. You will probably experience artefacts in your PDF documents. Furthermore, the author cannot guarantee that Printer support works since he doesn’t have a printer himself. Printer and PDF support is based on Ghostscript. If you have used command line Ghostscript to print a file, please mail the author the command and a description on the printer used. He will recompile a CW version that is optimized for your printer and return the new version to you.

When visiting desler.be for Cinnamon Writer, please note the possibility of joining the newsletter, to participate in Cinnamon Projects or join to get access to forums. If you like Cinnamon Writer and would you would like to support further development, please consider making a donation. (snx)

MorphOS: OpenTTD 0.6.2 Release Candidate #1
OpenTTD is an open-source clone of the well-known PC strategy game "Transport Tycoon Deluxe" from the 90ies with many extensions - among others a network modus, individual graphic sets and over 24 languages. The complete list of changes in version 0.6.2 you can read in the changelog.

The current version should still run under MorphOS 1.4.x (not tested). But according to Christian Rosentreter who compiles the MorphOS version the next versions will require MorphOS 2.0. If anybody wants to use OpenTTD under an earlier MorphOS version will have to compile game for himself. If there really should be a high demand Christian Rosentreter would do it as before. Please give him a feedback.

Furthermore on the website of Christian Rosentreter there is a PayPal button where you can show your appreciation and interest for OpenTTD - because Christian Rosentreter himself have not played this game for years anymore. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Open Video Toaster: Instant Bounties
Press release Chicago, Illinois – July 14th, 2008 -- Visual FX company DiscreetFX LLC Inc., in order to stimulate development for the Video Toaster Flyer source code DiscreetFX is launching an Instant Bounty contest. What is an Instant Bounty? This is a bounty that is paid once a programmer has requested and been assigned a programming task for Open Video Toaster.

This does take a little trust on our part since bounties are paid before coding even begins. Programmer past developments and applications will be taken into serious consideration and help gain them approval for OVT Instant Bounties. Programmers should review source code for the bounty in question before applying for consideration. Each development task for OVT will have set guidelines and coding time limits.

The larger goal of this contest is to stimulate development of video editing and video production software for MorphOS, Amiga OS 4.0 & AROS. This also allows us to see which 3rd party developer base is most passionate and serious about bringing their favorite operating system of choice back into the mainstream. Dedication and passion is what will bring Amiga successor operating systems back into relevance not mysterious companies who's true motives are unknown. Once upon a time with Video Toaster the Amiga was king of desktop video and computer assisted video editing. While in today's modern times it can no longer be king it could yet again be one of the many choices customers consider. That at least was the hope and dream we had when Open Video Toaster was launched. If your interested in video editing living again on Amiga OS type systems please donate to one of your favorite operating system bounties. DiscreetFX has already placed a starter donation in each of these bounties. Even if you can only donate a little it will help and you will be named and thanked on the Open Video Toaster website. Donations are paid instantly via Paypal to programmers that are assigned each bounty.

First three of many OVT Instant Bounties are for the Toaster Character Generator:

Port ToasterCG to AROS and remove hardware dependencies. Making CG take advantage of NVIDIA or ATI framebuffer cards is a bonus for the bounty but not required. AROS CG, $100 is already donated by DiscreetFX.

Port ToasterCG to Amiga OS 4.0 and remove hardware dependencies. Making CG take advantage of NVIDIA or ATI framebuffer cards is a bonus for the bounty but not required. OS 4.0 CG, $100 is already donated by DiscreetFX.

Port ToasterCG to MorphOS and remove hardware dependencies. Making CG take advantage of NVIDIA or ATI framebuffer cards is a bonus for the bounty but not required. Morph CG, $100 is already donated by DiscreetFX.

ToasterCG source code is available from the title link. (snx)

individual Computers: New address, Catweasel-Software-Update
Press releaseIn may of this year, we have moved to new premises with more than three times the space that our office in Aachen had to offer. Since we still don't run a retail shop, we have moved to the pictureque area of Simmerath, located in the natural park of the northern Eifel region. With this new location, there's also a change in our shipping partner: Parcels within Germany and the EU are now shipped with DPD.

New drivers for Catweasel MK4: The new drivers V 2.5.0.0 for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (32-bit versions) are fixing a few bugs in handling 5,25 inch drives. The new imagetool V3.1 can now read and write three new formats:
  • VersaDOS HD: These disks have been provided by Perfint tech from India. They are used to store medical imaging data. With new, faster computers now being able to retrieve data from older medical equipment, lots of money can be saved, and up-to-date medical service with modern image processing algorithms can be provided at lower cost. We're especially happy about this use case, as it has extremely high value to threshold countries.
  • VersaDOS 3HDDI: These disks have been provided to us by Matisa from Switzerland, a company that makes machines for railroad track construction and maintenance. The disk was mangled and obviously written on a very bad drive, but we managed to retrieve enough data for implementing this new format.
  • HP4145: This disk was provided to us by Bosch (Hildesheim, Germany), where it is used in semiconductor test-equipment.
Another new feature of the imagetool is the possibility to save d64/d71/d81 images of Commodore disks with additional error information. The automatic recognition of disk formats now gives a list of possible formats instead of stopping at the first positive try, which makes the function a lot more useful. You can find more details in the readme-files of the archive.

New Catweasel MK4 controllers will be back in stock in august of this year. To bridge this bottleneck in supply, we have cleared our safety-stock of Catweasel MK4 controllers. To our knowledge, all pre-orders are served now. Our retail partners are taking orders that will be shipped as soon as the new production run is available. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Event: Report and photos from the AIConf
Under the title link, a first report in English from the AIConf was published, which took place yesterday in Italy and where AmigaOS 4.1 was demonstrated for the first time. In addition, the author, Andrea Maniero, has shot some photos.

News compared to the announcement of the operating system update which took place the day before yesterday (reported by amiga-news.de) concern the price as well as the question of a version for PowerUp Amigas.

According to the report, which was confirmed by Massimiliano Tretene (Soft3, ACube Systems) to that effect as well, the recommended retail price for AmigaOS 4.1 will amount to 105 euros plus taxes, so in Germany, to around 125 euros. For it, you acquire a physical product in the form of a cardboard box, a CD with serial number as well as a printed installation manual, as with the previous version.

A version of AmigaOS 4.1 for PowerUp Amigas is not planned, according to the report. According to ACube Systems, it concerns a final cut; reportedly, only supporting newer computers allows concentrating on new functions. However, in all probability, the owners of AmigaOS 4.0 "Classic" would receive some updates, mainly bug fixes.

Regarding ACube Systems' new Flex-ATX board Sam440 Flex, which no longer has a Radeon M9 chip on-board, but three PCI slots instead, it was disclosed that the price is not conclusively fixed yet, but will probably lie between 300 and 350 euros plus VAT. No statements were made on the ability to run AmigaOS 4 on the Sam440 in view of the ongoing lawsuit by Amiga Inc. against Hyperion (reported by amiga-news.de). (snx) (Translation: cad)

Hyperion announces AmigaOS 4.1
Press release: Antwerp, Belgium - 11 July, 2008. Hyperion Entertainment is very pleased to announce that Amiga OS 4.1 has gone into final testing and is scheduled for release mid-Q3/2008. Building on the solid foundations of Amiga OS 4.0, Amiga OS 4.1 introduces a wealth of substantial new functionality which is a prerequisite for the deployment of industry standard applications on the Amiga platform.

State-of-the-art applications such as modern web-browsers, productivity software or digital imaging software typically operate on large datasets with a corresponding memory footprint which rapidly outstrips the physical memory of any computer system. Amiga OS 4.1 offers intelligent memory paging and uses transparent disk based memory - but only when you need it.

Sophisticated media content creation packages, multi media applications such as video players and 3D games have sparked a revolution in storage technology with hard-drive capacities now reaching the terabyte range. Amiga OS 4.1 introduces an all new filesystem, JXFS, the fastest and most robust filesystem available for the Amiga platform, with support for drives and partitions of multiple terabytes.

Graphics cards too have become increasingly powerful and versatile. Amiga OS 4.1 implements 3D hardware accelerated Porter/Duff image composition which is deeply integrated into the system. The upside is not only that the Amiga OS 4.1 user-interface offers unprecedented functionality and customization options such as transparent windows with arbitrary shapes. The use of a compositing engine also results in totally flicker-free screen-updates.

Building on this compositing engine is Amiga OS 4.1's implementation of the "Cairo" device-independent 2D rendering library which has become a de facto industry standard and is used in applications as diverse as Firefox 3, Java/ClassPath's SWING and even Open Office.

With these new features, Amiga OS 4.1 paves the way for countless exciting possibilities for the Amiga platform. Indeed, Amiga OS 4.1 is not only the most advanced AmigaOS incarnation to date, it is also the best way to reacquaint yourself with times when computing was fun!

A non-exhaustive list of key new functionality of Amiga OS 4.1:
  • Intelligent memory paging
  • Hardware compositing engine (Radeon R1xx and R2xx family)
  • Implementation of the "Cairo" device-independent 2D rendering library
  • Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) support for greater digital camera compatibility
  • JXFS filesystem with the support for drivers and partitions of multiple terabyte size
  • Improved Workbench functionality
  • New and improved DOS functionality (full 64 bit support, universal notification support, automatic expunge and reload of updated disk resources)
  • Improved 3D hardware accelerated screen-dragging
  • Reworked AmiDock with true transparency
  • Reworked Warp3D Radeon drivers with new functionality
  • And much, much more.
Required hardware: AmigaOne
Required graphics card for hardware compositing: Radeon 1xx or Radeon 2xx
Recommend graphics card: Radeon 9250

Amiga OS 4.1 will ship in a cardboard package (box preview) and will be distributed world-wide by Acube Systems Srl. Details on pricing and availability will be forthcoming.

MorphOS: Freeze 1.1
Christian Rosentreter's Freeze is a small commandline command to freeze (suspend) tasks or processes. A frozen task is still available in the system, but doesn't consume CPU time anymore.

Freezing a task can be useful if the task misbehaves (e.g. if the task starts to busyloop and does not let have other tasks a turn frequently enough and hence renders the system unusable).

There are similiar tools available already. F.ex. iKill (comes with MorphOS 2.0) can be used for the same purpose. But iKill needs an intution window to find the task, so does not work at all for window-less tasks. Further the well-known system monitor Scout offers in its tasklist window the possibility to freeze and activate tasks, but in case of a busyloop situation Scout can takes ages to load and initialize before it's possible to freeze a misbehaving task.

Freeze can be used from commandline and without any mouse interaction. It's very small and does not require any extra dependecies. It should load even in a worst case situation relatively fast.

To find a PID of a task or process the tasklist command (also provided by MorphOS 2.0) can be utilized from the commandline easily.

AmigaSYS: New distribution for E-UAE
AmigaSYS is a preinstalled Workbench for different Amiga emulators. Additionally only a file with the Kickstart-ROM as well as at least a Workbench-disk of version 3.x are required.

Now there is a new version of the emulator (Mac OS X, Linux, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS). Additionally the website of the AmigaSYS-project was reworked. (cg) (Translation: dr)
