AmigaOS 4: Warning against dubious eBay offers
Currently, a supposedly retail version of AmigaOS 4 for classic Amigas is being offered under the designation AMIGA OS4 for Amiga with Blizzard or Cyberstorm PPC on eBay. In the offer, provided with copious text and pictures, the remark that basically, the auction only constitutes a preorder, can be overlooked very easily.

Behind the supplier "ALIEN^TEK" stands a certain Robert O'Neil, who also appears under the aliases "Paradox" and "Amber, Inc," among others. In the past, O'Neil had already been repeatedly charged with fraud, for example, he had temporarily appeared as an AmigaOne dealer without possessing corresponding hardware.

As far as we know, Hyperion is informed of the situation. As a precaution, prospective buyers should refrain from a purchase at this supplier until a clarification of the issue. (cg) (Translation: cad)

Amition.de: Eleven videos added
In addition to extensions to some subpages, eleven more videos were added to the Download and Amiga History areas on Amition.de.

In this connection, the operator would like to ask all Amiga fans to be allowed to make available video, commercials, show videos or TV recordings that may exist, for all other users on his web page. The format is irrelevant for this purpose.

Furthermore, since the day before yesterday, a faster server with more memory is at the disposal of Amition.de. Amition.info and Amition.mobi were added as further domains. (snx) (Translation: cad)

MIDI-Sequencer: Horny 1.3
Press release: Horny is a midi sequencer in the style of e.g. "Logic®" or "Cubase®". Its focus is on easy and uncomplicated usage. Up to now Horny is a pure midi program and does not support audio.

From now on the program does only cost 29 Euro. A keyfile for the software sampler Phonolith (OS4) is still always inclusive!

New in version 1.3:
  • optionally starts Phonolith and opens there the corresponding project (only OS4)
  • AmiUpdate support (only OS4)
  • application.library support (only OS4)
  • with ALT mouse wheel axis can be changed (only OS4)
  • Maus wheel now works in editor window (OS3/newmouse)
  • Latency compensation for each MIDI-port

Comment to the future of Horny:

The begin of the development of Horny was started to a time when I had not the knowledge of good programming. Therefore it is not possible to implement new features and even to fix bugs it is rather complicated.

This update 1.3 probably will be the last one with new features. At most you can expect minor bug fixes. Before I started programming Phonolith I started writing a new implementation of Horny for OS4. Probably I will continue developing it after Phonolith 1.0. But this will take a while.

Features in version 1.3:

Midi:
  • Up to 16 midi ports usable with CAMD (Lite: 1 port)
  • Up to 128 tracks (Lite: 16 tracks)
  • Signature and tempo changes inside songs possible
  • Midi mixer: VU meter, volume, pan, 6 more (Lite: 3) chooseable controller
  • Automation of all mixer parameters direct in tracks
  • SysEx manager with as many sort groups as you like
  • Controller transformer e.g. for controlling volume with modulation wheel
  • eXtream Sync support for synchronizing with AudioEvolution 4 and other software
  • Latency compensation for every midi port

Editors:
  • Piano Editor: Quantizing (with triplet support), velocity compessor,...
  • Controller Editor: Compressor, reducing, smoothing,...
  • Multiple undo/redo in piano/controller editor
  • Position marker in arranger window
  • Complete overview of projects in arranger window
  • Sound selection with names (not only GeneralMidi, but able to extend for any synthesizers)
  • Midi controllers are named for any supported synthesizers as well

File:
  • SMF import and export
  • Horny file format is up- and downwards compatible
  • Autoload project for your own templates
  • SysEx files import and export in SysEx Manager

User Interface:
  • ReAction GUI at setting windows
  • On Workbench or own screen
  • Arranger window can be used as background (backdrop)
  • locale.library support: Up to now german and english
  • Some GUI elements are 24 bit graphics (PNG files)
  • Mouse wheel support for scrolling in editors (OS4 and NewMouse)
  • application.library support with docky icon (OS4)
  • AmiUpdate support (OS4)
  • Starts Phonolith and opens project for song automaticly (OS4)

Back to the Roots: Fred Fish memorial archive
Press release: Hello and welcome to the first small update of the Back to the Roots archive since our main archive down time. Now after successfully moving the project to a new server we have enough resources again to continue growing our service. To increase our update frequency (in preference to the rare monster updates we did before) we decided to offer smaller topic wise updates from now on, and group them to the huge updates you are used to from the past.

We want to send a big thank you to more than 200 people who donated to our server hardware money collection. We will in turn try to give each free byte some honourful content. Big thanks also goes to the patience of all contributors, not to pull their money back during our rest!

First of all we started a new subproject, dedicated to one of the most famous Amiga activists ever:

The Fred Fish memorial archive is our tribute to Fred where we try to document his entire life work project wise, offering his work (licensed by himself) and his cooperative projects (so far co-licensed by Danny Amor, Leslie Dietz, Eric Schwartz, Mark Stanley) for free download. The first 8 CDs are already online since a while, many further ones will follow.

As a second part of our tribute we host the homepage of Fred and his wife Michelle (and their dogs), documenting the last adventureful years of Fred's life cruising the ocean in a boat called "DiveAdx", going swimming, diving and deep sea fishing. Just pure Fish.

More to come soon.... (cg)

AmigaOS 4: CD-/DVD-burning software AmiDVD 1.38
AmiDVD written by Jörg Strohmayer is a very simple CD-/DVD-burning software which first creates an image file in ISO9660-format and then writes it on a CD or DVD.

In version 1.38 a workaround for Pioneer drives was implemented which thereby now are nearly as fast as drives of different producers.

"Jack" has published a first alpha version of a port of the text typeset system LaTeX. A viewer for DVI-files is still not implemented. SDK (Software Development Kit) and a current version of abc-shell are required.

The author asks for feedback of users with LaTeX experiences but he points out that the installation guide still was not completed.

Hint: In the distribution archive there is a damaged version of the file "etex". It is absolutely necessary to download the working version of etex and to copy it over the original version.

AmigaOS 4 for PowerUp: Press releases by Hyperion and ACube
As announced at the AmiWest 2007 event, the AmigaOS 4 version for PowerUp-Amigas will be released November 30 (amiga-news.de reported). Meanwhile, both Hyperion Entertainment VOF and ACube Systems Srl. have published official press-releases on their respective website.

AmigaOS 4.0 for Classic Amiga to be released November 30th

Antwerp, Belgium - 23 October, 2007 As announced this weekend in Sacramento, CA during the Amiwest banquet, Amiga OS 4.0 for classic Amiga’s equipped with PowerPC accelerator cards, will start shipping on 30 November 2007.

The version of Amiga OS 4.0 shipping for classic Amiga’s is functionally identical to the version already available for AmigaOne hardware and can co-exist with existing Amiga OS 3.x installations in a dual-boot configuration.

The cardboard packaging will contain a CD, a DD boot-floppy to allow installation without a pre-installed Amiga OS and a printed “Quick Start” manual.

Production and world-wide distribution of Amiga OS 4.0 Classic will be handled by our strategic partners Acube Systems s.r.l.

Due to the wide variety of (often no longer produced) third-party hardware available for the Amiga 1200, Amiga 3000(T) and Amiga 4000 (T), prospective customers are strongly advised to verify whether their hardware is supported by Amiga OS 4.0 Classic before placing their order. A list of supported and unsupported hardware will be going online soon on Acube Systems' website. Depending on overall market-demand for the Amiga OS 4.0 Classic version, additional hardware may be supported in the future.

AmigaOS 4.0 Classic will require at least 64 MB of memory (more is recommended) and at least 200 MB of free hard disk space, as well as a supported PowerPC accelerator (CyberstormPPC or BlizzardPPC).

Hyperion Entertainment once again wishes to thank its loyal customers for their business and support.

AmiWest 2007: AmigaOS 4 for PowerUp on November 30
In the course of AmiWest in Sacramento, which takes place this weekend, Steven Solie has announced, at the request of AmigaOS 4 developer Hans-Jörg Frieden, that starting from November 30, AmigaOS 4 will be availabe for Amiga computers with PowerUp accelerator cards.

The Amiga models 1200, 3000, 4000 and 4000T are supported, provided that they are equipped with a BlizzardPPC or CyberStormPPC card.

An existing AmigaOS installation is not required, merely a hard disk as well as a floppy disk and a CD drive. When booting from the enclosed floppy disk, the CD-ROM driver will be loaded. Should a system already be installed, the installation can be started directly from the CD as well.

Upon an inquiry on supported expansions, Hans-Jörg 'Rogue' Frieden points out that there will be a hardware compatibility list with all relevant information.

But at the moment, there is a Highway driver for USB, and if he remembers correctly, FastATA and IDEFix as well as similar hardware are supported as well. However, the installation process currently requires that you have connected either an IDE or a SCSI CD drive to the CyberStormPPC. The SCSI controller of the BlizzardPPC, on the other hand, is not currently supported, so only the IDE port of the Amiga 1200.

Support for other hardware could possibly be added within the scope of an update. With regard to PCI, all Prometheus-esque PCI solutions as well as the Mediator 1200 and 4000 expansions are supported, no "DMA tricks" though. (snx) (Translation: cad)

Amiga Future 68 Preview Online
Press release: The preview and some excerpts of the Amiga Future 69 (November/December 2007) are online now. Starting with issue 67 the Amiga Future is available in German and English.

Besides many articles covering the Amiga there are reviews of Sputnik, AmiUpdate and much more in this issue. A more detailed description of contents is available at our website. The cover CD of the Amiga Future features many full versions besides lots of PD software.

The Amiga Future is available as a single issue or subscription. You are free to choose whether you want it with or without a cover CD.

The Amiga Future is available directly from the editorial office and some Amiga dealers like Alinea, Vesalia, AmigaKit, GGS Data, ASB, Samuli... If dealers are interested in offering the Amiga Future for their customers then simply write us an email.

Also we ask all users especially the ones getting the English edition to extend their subscriptions as soon as possible or letting us know if they aren't interested anymore. This would ease the planning of the next issue of the Amiga Future heavily. (cg) (Translation: cg)

AmigaOS 4: Epistula parially released under LGPL
The Author of the instant messenger Epistula notified that due to job occupation he virtually cannot continue the development of the programme. Because he does not expect a change ofthis situation in the foreseeable future, teh source code for the ICQ and MSN plugins for Epistula will be released under the LGPL.

The source code of the main programme will be withheld for a while, because a final decision regarding that has not been done yet. Beside the option to keep the source code to take up development at a later date, the author also thinks about relasing the source when a a bounty is reached or sell the rights with some auction.
