Eyetech: Possible extensions for the MicroA1
In a comment on AmigaWorld Eyetech delivers further details to the MicroA1.
According to it a three times PCI-Riser-card as well as an extension slot are planned
as extensions for the MicroA1.
This seperate extension slot is meant to offer a possibility for improved input and
output functions if PCI cannot be used.
Furthermore there would be the possibility of installing 256 MB RAM on the mainboard.
The graphic chip could be a cheap Radeon chip.

Genesi (E-Mail)

Genesi selects IBM PowerPC for Performance-intensive Pegasos Release
Genesi today announced a new, PowerPC®-based, modular MicroATX mainboard release that brings flexibility and efficient processing power to performance-intensive applications, including desktops, workstations, servers, and communications products.
This latest MicroATX board is the most powerful and cost-effective hardware foundation for Genesi's popular Pegasos platform, with over 1,000 users in 34 countries around the world.
The new motherboard features an IBM PowerPC 750CXe microprocessor and supports industry standards software such as Open Firmware, and multiple operating systems including distributions of Linux and BSD.
"Genesi's new PowerPC-based computer brings effective and flexible processing power to the desktop, low-end server, firewall and pervasive space at an affordable price", said Bill Buck, CEO of Genesi.
Looking forward, Mr. Buck also revealed that Genesi would be working closely with IBM to release a 64-bit Pegasos workstation in 2004, based on the new IBM PowerPC 970 microprocessor.
"Today's Pegasos release is a starting point that will enable all the operating systems developed for the PowerPC environment to begin to move in this direction with confidence and purpose", he explained.
The new Pegasos platform is also the core for Genesi's first commercial product designed to support the increasingly-important security infrastructure requirements of Fortune 1000 companies and large institutions.
The Pegasos Guardian provides: border protection of networks; proactive protection of network assets; and logging and auditing of suspicious network traffic.
"IT Managers must know exactly what is happening on their networks, and why", said Buck. "The Guardian gives you a very high level of control and the new MicroATX board provides the performance platform for them to achieve this."
Choice of the PowerPC environment enhances the security that Guardian offers: "Much of the office and network IT infrastructure in use today is x86-based", explained Buck. "The Guardian runs on a different processor platform and is not as susceptible to the common buffer overflows that are the main entry point for security breaches." Any element of security begins with people, procedure and enforcement, but with tools such as the Guardian IT Managers can audit and build their own code. Customers need a total security posture, and this is one component of a total security system.
Genesi developed the Guardian with partners ShopIP (www.shopip.com) and Diginexus (www.diginexus.com). The interface design and border-level protection is based on the acclaimed ShopIP Crunchbox.
Proactive protection is based on the security scanning features of Nessus (www.nessus.org) and the internal invisible IDS scanning features were developed and contributed by Diginexus.
Buck added, "this collaborative effort is an example of the partnerships we expect to develop in the months ahead and indicative of the many and varied potential uses for an open, powerful and efficient hardware platform."
"IBM has worked closely with Genesi and its partners to ensure that the Pegasos platform can be configured to cover the rich variety of applications over multiple operating systems that Genesi and its partners are developing", said Ray Bryant, Director PowerPC Products at IBM Microelectronics. "The integration of the IBM PowerPC 750CXe offers developers further opportunities to extend Pegasos' use into the evolutionary path we have chartered for the PowerPC."
Based on industry standards, such as Open Firmware, the Pegasos supports multiple operating systems including varieties of Linux and BSD. The Pegasos platform also comes with Genesi's own non-UNIX, Quark-based MorphOS. Recent releases supported on the Pegasos include OpenBSD 3.4 and Debian-Installer Beta 1.
Buck added, "in the meanwhile, the strategic value of moving to a Linux Desktop is becoming increasing clear and a migration to Linux has begun. Every major commercial or non-commercial version/distribution of Linux on the market today runs on the Pegasos, including SuSE and the Novell® Nterprise Linux Service package. Getting on the network with the Pegasos Guardian and on the desktop with the Pegasos, now and in the future with the PowerPC 970, places Genesi at the forefront of these major market developments."
Genesi has served the computer hobbyist since the first Beta release of the Pegasos in 2002. Trialed and tested by over 1000 users in 34 countries, enthusiasts have configured the Pegasos in variety of fashions with over a dozen different operating systems. The Pegasos was awarded the Amiga Award 2002 by Falke Media Verlag and recently, the Pegasos was acclaimed as the future home of the Linux desktop by German Linux site PPCNUX.
The Pegasos-Guardian will make its public debut with ShopIP and Diginexus at Infosecurity 2003, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York, December 8-11, Booth 126 and be distributed by Pegasos Resellers worldwide through the IBM Global Solutions Directory.
Genesi's "Ready for IBM Technology"-validated Pegasos systems signal the advancement of the IBM 750CXe PowerPC microprocessor family into the broader global marketplace for embedded industrial controls, military, multimedia, consumer electronic appliances, blade servers, thin client systems, storage, networking, firewalls, and communication applications. With leading edge CPU bus speed capabilities and enhanced AGP, PCI-X, SDRAM and DDR support, the combination of the Marvell Discovery II chipset and IBM PowerPC 750CXe processors offers a most desirable solution to the performance-intensive applications marketplace.
Genesi is an IBM Business Partner and carries the Ready for IBM Technology mark on five of its products, the Pegasos Guardian, Pegasos, PegXLin, MorphOS, and OpenBSD for Pegasos. The basic Pegasos featuring the IBM PowerPC processor can be purchased online for 299 Euros at http://www.pegasosppc.com while the Pegasos-Guardian is priced between 5000 and 15000 Euros depending on the configuration and the associated service contract. Genesi is based in Luxembourg and can be found on the Web at http://www.genesi.lu. Details on the Pegasos Guardian are presented at http://www.pegasosppc.com/guardian.php.

Update Of DVDRTools
DVDRTools
has been reworked. The following changes were made:
- The text of the homepage was brought up to date
- All instructions for DVDRTools are now in HTML format
- DVDRTools has been recompiled with GCC3.3, something that should provide for cleaner code, and from there on shrink the size of the executable by about 70%, because of the reduction of debugging code
- The GUI ToastDVD has also been updated and now not only works with DVDRTools alone but also with the other programs of DVDRTools. With this DVDRTools becomes almost as easy to use as MakeCD or BurnIT, it's just that you can do the same stuff with DVDR support
Further, I am now working on a solution to overcome the 2 GB limit, but that's not quite ready yet. (snx) (Translation: dm)

New version of the ASFS Linux dirver
The ASFS file system driver for Linux by Marek Szyprowski is now available as a public beta 1.0 beta 1. With this tool SmartFileSystem (sfs) partitons of the Amiga/MorphOS are accessable while running Linux. In the meantime it became possible not only to read these partitions but also to write to them, even this is still in an experimental stage.
The patch for the kernel source code of Linux is to obtain from the ASFS homepage:
asfs-1.0b1_patch_2.4.21.diff.gz
The author emphasizes that this is a beta version and there is no warranty that this driver works correctly. There is the possibility of system crashes or loss of data. The use of this tool is on your own risk, Marek Szyprowski is not responsible for any kind of damage.
He adds that he successful copied several gigabyte of data using this driver. Feedback of any kind is welcome by him.

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 24
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 24 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-15, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):
1) BobC: Can you tell us what third party software companies or individuals are interested in writing or actually are writing software for OS4 on the A1? If you can't say who they are, perhaps, what types of third party software is being developed?
Fleecy: I can only tell you of those that have publicly committed to writing for AmigaOS4.0 since the others are either still looking into it or are developing but do not wish to make an announcement yet.
Those that are publicly committed are
Ibrowse Pagestream AudioEvolution CandyFactory 2 Tales of Tamar VBCC WordMeUp
Hyperion have also committed to creating AmigaOS4.0 versions of their games and have a licence to develop DirectoryOpus for AmigaOS4.0.
Several other companies have said that when a more complete developer SDK is available and/or when the market size becomes clearer, then they will take another look.
There are likely to be quite a few surprise products turning up as well but as I said, for a number of reasons the companies involved are not willing to announce publicly at this time.
2) Uncharted: Will the new "AG2 services" change the way AmigaOS works from a user's perspective? Will things like devices, system structure (C: DEVS: LIBS: ENVARC: etc.), and UI paradigms be changed?
Fleecy: Initially no but with the introduction of a resources and services architecture, it will change. This architecture internalises the implementation and publicly presents a semantic abstraction. AmigaOS4.0 presents a half way house with its use of interfaces called against libraries. However, because the access is via a semantic abstraction, it will be possible for a user to create a relationship that makes it look like the old organisation model, if they so desire.
As for the interactive environment, we have looked at all that is good in the existing interface as well as all is bad. We are bringing a workflow analysis to this area and, whilst you will be able to recognise elements from previous implementations, there will be a lot that is new and (we hope) better. The whole solution will allow the user to eventually build their own interface so if you want to go back to AmigaOS3.9 Workbench, it should be possible.
3) Shep: A while ago on here I suggested that Amiga could use affiliate marketing, similar to amazon, for marketing the new Amiga. I would gladly join such a scheme when I have my new website sorted out (which will be appropriate because of its theme), what do you think Fleecy?
Fleecy: I think it is a very good idea. We have a lot of ideas ourselves which are partly a reaction to the situation we find ourselves in at the moment. Getting the good news about Amiga's rebirth out into the world is going to be top priority and, as we found at the Micromart show and, as has been proved over the past six months, our user groups are going to be crucial in that process.
4) DaveP: Hi there Fleecy, would you rather do this monthly? ;-)
Fleecy: At least it wouldn't be late all the time ;-)
5) GregS: Are there any plans with including in OS4-4.2 a XML Signature generator?
Fleecy: XML will play a big part in AG2, so yes.
6) Asemoon: There is much concern within the industry about monopoly OS companies abusing their position to make it hard or near impossible to replace components with alternatives. This has never been the case with AmigaOS' design. Will this modularity and freedom continue with future releases?
Fleecy: Very much so. With a resource and services architecture it would be hard to do otherwise.
7) prmetime: 1. When the A1/zico spec was first announced, a partnership with Matrox was announced fairly soon thereafter. I have yet to see any Matrox drivers or chips on hardware to this point. Is Matrox still a partner and will their graphics chipsets be supported?
Fleecy: Matrox are still a partner and, with SNAP coming on board, we will have an excellent set of drivers for Matrox boards. Given that 3D is not currently the forte of Matrox, then we will be concentrating on other, more appropriate products.
8) GregS: Are there any plans (beyond OS4.0) to add to the Amiga some simple and easy to maintain and control Multi-User-Profile system for the AmigaOS?
Fleecy: Yes but it will require the foundations to change first for the data storage and organisation services. That is something that will appear early in AG2.
9) The_Editor: We recently had, what seemed to be a high profile visitor to AW.net expressing his frustration at not being able to find anyone "high enough" to talk to about developing for DE. Due to a lack of information, he is taking his idea elsewhere. Who do we direct such enquiries to in future and what steps would Amiga Inc take to see this calamity is not repeated ?
Fleecy: This is clearly very worrying. I did not receive any information about him and there is supposed to be a requests process on the Amiga Anywhere website. I shall look into this as a matter of urgency.
10) jurassiccamper: Alan has mentioned that earlybird owners may get an installable OS4 beta by christmas. How will this be distributed?
Fleecy: It won't be a beta per se but a pre-release that will not be supported directly. Amigaworld have already expressed an interest in becoming a forum for support and feedback of information generated from the pre-release. As for the format for distribution I believe we are currently considering a downloadable ISO image to be burnt to a CD via Debian.

Genesi news in short
- After their products Pegasos, MorphOS and PegXLin and their Pegasos port of OpenBSD has the company Genesi S.à.r.l. itself now been registered on the "Ready for IBM-Technology" list.
- Felix Schwarz leaves Genesi and is concentrating completely on his company IOSPIRIT again as Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck posted in a comment on MorphOS-News.de. The company owe among other things the creation, support and moderation of many of their websites to him.
- The official Japanese site of the Pegasos network is now online: www.Pegasos-JP.com.

Tool: SRename 3.8.0
Constantinos Nicolakakis has published the final version 3.8.0 of the tool "SRename".
With this tool you can comfortably rename files. The following features have been added
in the new version:
New features:
- Added the STATS (ST) option to display statistics such as:
- Directories scanned
- Filenames processed
- Directory names processed
- Files renamed
- Directories renamed
- File comments changed
- Directory comments changed
- Time taken in seconds
- Added "SRbench"-script to archive for performing standard toggle case
benchmark
- Removed the 255 directory depth level limit. Now more than 2 billion
levels of depth are allowed.
- Now when the name or comment of a directory is changed "(dir)" is
appended to the output to indicate that the object type is a
directory.
Bugfixes:
- Fixed bug where giving FILES and DIRS together would result in no
files being renamed. Now FILES cancels DIRS as it should have.
- In renumbering mode directories that match the basename are no
longer processed. Now if the starting number is in a filename only
filenames will be renumbered, and if the starting number is in a directory
name only directory names will be renumbered.
Further changes:
- Numerous optimizations resulted in speed gains, particularly in startup
time. Because the main bottleneck for SRename is the speed of the OS
Rename system call, the percentage of increase in speed relatively to
the previous version, will be greater for fast systems and smaller or
non existent for slow systems.

Genesi: Taking Part in HCC-Dagen Show in the Netherlands
Genesi SARL announced their participation at the Dutch HCC-Dagen from 28th through 30th November. Reportedly this is the biggest show of its kind in the Benelux lands, with attendance in previous years reaching 100,000 by some accounts.
They'll be guests at the stand (D106, hall 9) of Tyra-Group.
Tyra-Group is going to introduce their CS-2 system ("Communication Station 2") at HCC-Dagen. This is a new system configuration that is small in size (A4), but with space for a standard 5.25" drive, a 5.25" slim bay, a 5.25" "quarterdrive bay," a 3.5" floppy drive, two hard-drives as well as expansion cards of normal height with additional room for high graphic cards. The TFT screen can be changed out as can the powerpack, both standard, off-the-shelf components.
The "CS-2 Deluxe" is a complete home multimedia system based on Genesi's Pegasos and running MorphOS as well as Tyra-Group's proprietary software. (snx) (Translation: dm)

CAPS Update
The CAPS team (who concern themselves with the archiving of old, copy-protected Amiga games, to include copy-protection written on the flags) has converted another bunch of games into CAPS format. This format may for example be read by new UAE versions.
A list of the new games is available from the CAPS homepage. In the meantime more than 1200 games have been archived, among them some very scarce titles such as "Hacker" or a few of the first games from Electronic Arts. CAPS is now looking for people who own other original games and would like to help with the archiving.
Additionally the Amiga version of CAPS Library, which makes possible the use mounting of diskette images that are then worked on by CAPS, is being overhauled. (cg) (Translation: dm)

Analogue data capture for Amiga
For the recently by Carsten Siegner announced 3-wire bus interface to control different ICs (we reported) is now a circuit diagram as well as some pictures available as a PDF document.
To be able to use the interface has Carsten written a short measuring program that outputs the given voltage as integer byte number and as floating point number.
Before using the program the following ENV variables have to be set:
- "Analog-device": (used serial device)
- "Analog-unit": (used serial unit)
- "Analog-volt": (maximum measured, permissible voltage and voltage to reach. Typical here are 5 V. Here you should measure again with a multimeter as you can get under circumstances values between 4.089 - 5.04 V.)
The program needs the following files:
- Rexxtricks
- tritonrexx
- rexxserdev
The program and the mentioned circuit diagram and photos are available as LHA archives.
Direct download (190 KB)
For the future Carsten plans the data capture with several channels. For this he has already got a chip LTC 1293. This can collect and convert six different analogue measure data and forward them sequentially to the computer.

CCC: central saving of biometrical data endangers constitutional rights
The approach of the "Bund Deutscher Kriminalbeamten" (BDK) to save biometrical
characteristics of all European citizens in a central data base causes hardest reservations at the Chaos Computer Club (CCC);
the constitutional rights of informational self-determination would then be abolished in a fundamental area - while the use for the combating of crime isn't even proofed.
The CCC opposes especially against the idea of a central data saving as it has been last demanded by the speaker of the "Bund deutscher
Kriminalbeamten", Holger Bernsee. In the view of the CCC the potential misuse and possible desires in the context of a central data tracking is out of all proportion to the possible gain in the combating of crime that (the possible gain) can be realized with a technically clearly less democracy endangering system.

Interview with Alan Redhouse from Eyetech (Update)
The Amiga-portal AmigaWorld has
interviewed Alan Redhouse who is the manager of the Eyetech Group.
Update: (cg, 21.11.2003, 14:25)
We have summarized the most important statements of Alan Redhouse in the following lines:
- Alan Redhouse thinks that more AmigaOnes have been sold than other "open" (that means
not Apple/IBM) PPC systems.
- since AmigaOS4 has been officially demonstrated on the AmigaOne the amount of sold
AmigaOnes has been increased
- currently it is tried to deliver all "Earlybird"-customers a beta version of OS4
if possible before Christmas
- the Onboard Graphic-chip of the Micro-A1 is still not certain but probably it will
become a low-cost Radeon Chip
- the "High-Tech" interfaces (RAID, Gigabit Ethernet, USB2, Firewire) will be implemented
at the Micro-A1 probably on a seperate, optional platine. Because of that the board will become
cheaper for customers.
- Waiting peroid when ordering an AmigaOne motherboard: ca. two weeks
(Complete system: Four weeks)
- Until now there have been two problems refered to the DMA at the AmigaOne: The first
is caused by VIA bug and has been fixed with the help of a software patch.
The second problem is that the ArticiaS enables the simultaneous access of CPU and a
of a PCI busmaster to the memory. In the x86-world this is not usual because of that the
(of Linux-x86 ported) Linux drivers may not manage this. This oddity of the ArticiaS is supposed
to be a included "turbo" which makes the computer "smarter". AmigaOS4 is not affected by
these two problems
- Exactly fitting boxes are not possible because of the costs but Eyetech works with
Naya Design on some modifications which change the standard boxes to Amiga boxes in a
cheap way.
- Single-CPU-modules with faster G3/G4-processors already exists and have been presented
officially, too. But there must be ca. 400 preorders to enable such a product.
Because of that only dual-cpu modules has planned.
- The AmigaOne in Micro-ATX format has planned only for the end of the next year.

"Pirates!" Clone: Graphic Artists Sought for "Drake"
The ZeroVertex-team of Oliver
Gantert has been working for some time on a 3D clone of the strategy classic "Pirates!." Now that big steps with the game engine have been taken in the last few months, and Oliver says this is "about 98% ready," the thing urgently needed now is 3D graphic artists.
ZeroVertex is looking for 3D artists and animators who make use of 3dsmax, Milkshape3D, or some other software that offers "bone animation" support. Further, they need 3D artists who can produce static models like houses, plants, and they need texture artists as well, who can come up with textures for the existing models.
Whoever wants to help should send an email to Oliver Gantert.

Status Quo: Summary about the issues regarding Pretory SA
During the last months the French press, among them l'Humanité (1, 2), Les Echos (1) and L'Expansion (1)
, reported several times about an insolvency of the American-French company
Pretory which is specialized to security services and employed for example security services for the Air France at airports.
The reports were claiming Pretory SA (France) was employing a stuff not sufficient trained or with too less proven reliability at the highly sensible area of security.
Inofficial sources are talking about wages not beeing paid since May 2003 for about 560 employees.
Bill Buck and Raquel Velasco are shareholders
and managers of the US company Pretory USA, which subsidiaries
Thendic France S.à.r.l. and Thendic Deutschland GmbH are counted as precurors of the Pegasos distributor Genesi S.à.r.l..
Thendic is running a court suit against Aminga Inc. since some time (amiga-news.de reported).
In a hearing of the Tribunal of Commerce in Paris last Monday, November the 17th 2003, according to Buck and Velasco at ANN.lu a sentence has been made which declares Pretory S.A. as bancrupt and calls a liquidation manager.
Due to that there is now a transfer of Thendic-France S.à.r.l.'s assets to Genesi S.à.r.l. possible. The issues will not affect Genesi in any kind else, Buck told.
We will keep on track about all news about this issue and report it here at
amiga-news.de and the AMIGAplus. (nba) (Translation: ub)

Genesi USA going to move principal office into Cheyenne Technology Corridor
As Genesi S.à.r.l. announces, its American subsidiary Genesi USA is going to move its prinicipal office in January into the Northport building complex in Northern Las Vegas, which has been developed by the Jackson Shaw Company.
Please find the original press release below:
Cheyenne Technology Corridor
Continues to add High Tech Firms
North Las Vegas - Today, the Cheyenne Technology Corridor welcomed another high tech tenant. Genesi USA, a computer systems company, has agreed to terms with Northport, a Jackson Shaw development in the CTC. The company will move into its facility in January.
Genesi SARL, a Luxembourg based company, introduced the Pegasos in October 2003. Culminating over five years of development, the Pegasos is a high-performance PowerPC based modular MicroATX mainboard for use in a variety of applications, including desktops, workstations, servers and communications products. Based on industry standards, such as Open Firmware, the Pegasos supports multiple operating systems including varieties of Linux and BSD. The Pegasos is the first new hardware and operating system platform brought to market in many years. Pegasos computers run multiple operating systems, including MorphOS, a new non-UNIX based operating system, OpenBSD, the standard for security in operating systems and various distributions of Linux for the PowerPC®. Genesi has been designated as an IBM Business Partner and carries the Ready for IBM Technology mark on four of its products, PegasosPPC, PegXLin, MorphOS, and OpenBSD for PegasosPPC. Product details are available at <www.genesi.lu>. Genesi USA will be the focus of US computer assembly operations for Genesi.
When asked why Genesi USA chose the CTC as its new home, Paul Adams said, "After evaluating Nevada, Maine, Alabama, Florida and Texas as possible locations, we determined that the best overall business climate was in Southern Nevada. The other states offered many things, including free land for our facility and a year's worth of free rent; but, in the end, the favorable tax structure, the assistance of the City of North Las Vegas and the Community College of Southern Nevada provided a business climate that was much more supportive than anything we had seen in other states."
Mike Carroll, Vice President of Development for Jackson-Shaw said, "We are very proud to welcome Genisi USA to Northport. The CTC continues to thrive and add new businesses to the North Las Vegas economy. We look forward to more successes for the CTC."
Mike Majewski, who is the Economic Development Director for the City of North Las Vegas said, "It took a community-wide effort to secure Genesi in North Las Vegas, but the potential economic impacts to the CTC and all of Southern Nevada is phenomenal. This partnership between the City, real estate developers, and education was recently honored as the recipient of the Excellence in Economic Development award sponsored by the International Economic Development Council."
Through a public/private alliance, the Cheyenne Technology Corridor is bringing more technology businesses to Southern Nevada. The partnership includes the City of North Las Vegas, the Brennan Brothers, Jackson Shaw, RDS/Insight, LLC, Stoltz Management and Harsch Investment Properties.
The Cheyenne Technology Corridor is an integrated, accessible and diversified technology district offering advanced systems and infrastructure, state-of-the-art transportation and communication alternatives, and a knowledgeable and experienced workforce. (snx)

3-Wire Bus-Interface for Amiga
Carsten Siegener tells that he finished the first hardware test for the "3-Wire Businterface" for the Amiga. With this interface the Amiga is allowed
to read and control ICs with serial datatransfer. A very important group of ICs with this bus art are f.e. the 12bit analog-digitalchanger.
It was Carsten's aim to get an analog measuring recording for the amiga, which is useable on other systems. This ist the ground for him to think out the
3-Wire Interface, which you can put on your serial port of your computer.
The software speakes to the interface via the standard-APIs (serial.device), because of that it is possible to be used with the Pegasos or with the Amithlon.
There are many application areas to use such an interface, f.e. weather stations, alarm systems, etc. The interface was tested by the LTC-1292 (12bit ADC).
The software just exists as a simple test version with datalogging and debugging. It should be adapt to the LTC-1292 chip, where the software is for the
measuring recording.
A more exact scheme of the interface with the LTC1292 will be published shortly

New Unix ports from Diego Casorran
Once again, Diego Casorran (amiga.sourceforge.net)
ported a collection of assorted Unix tools and utilities to AmigaOS:
cURL v7.10.8
cURL is a client to get documents/files from or send documents to a server, using any of the supported protocols (HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, GOPHER, DICT, TELNET, LDAP or FILE). The command is designed to work without user interaction or any kind of interactivity. cURL offers a busload of useful tricks like proxy support, user authentication, ftp upload, HTTP post, SSL (https:) connections, cookies, file transfer resume and more.
Direct download
Wget v1.9.1
Wget is a free utility for non-interactive download of files from the Web. It supports HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP protocols, as well as retrieval through HTTP proxies.
It can follow links in HTML pages and create local versions of remote Web sites, fully recreating the directory structure of the original site. This is sometimes referred to as "recursive downloading." While doing that, Wget respects the Robot Exclusion Standard (/robots.txt). Wget can be instructed to convert the links in downloaded HTML files to the local files for offline viewing.
Direct download
ngIRCd v0.7.5
ngIRCd is an Open-Source server for the Internet Relay Chat (IRC), ngIRCd means "next generation IRC daemon", it's written from scratch and not deduced from the "grandfather of IRC daemons", the daemon of the IRCNet.
At present, the ngIRCd is under active development, some features are not implemented, some only partly. Till today (more or less complete) implemented IRC-commands:
ADMIN, AWAY, CHANINFO, CONNECT, DIE, DISCONNECT, ERROR, HELP, INVITE, ISON, JOIN, KICK, KILL, LINKS, LIST, LUSERS, MODE, MOTD, NAMES, NICK, NJOIN, NOTICE, OPER, PART, PASS, PING, PONG, PRIVMSG, QUIT, REHASH, RESTART, SERVER, SQUIT, STATS, TIME, TOPIC, TRACE, USER, USERHOST, VERSION, WHO, WHOIS.
Direct download
dbacl v1.5
dbacl is a command line program which can be used to categorize several types of text documents. Each document category is constructed as a maximum entropy language model, with respect to a reference measure based on digrams (character pairs).
Before recognition can take place, a number of text corpora must be "learned". For example, an English category could be based on a text file containing the collected works of Shakespeare. The Gutenberg project makes freely available many public domain works in electronic form.
After learning, any number of text files can be compared, in terms of Bayesian posterior probabilities, with up to 128 learned categories. The actual number of categories is limited only by available memory.
Direct download
gifsicle v1.40
Gifsicle twaddles GIF image files in a variety of ways. It is better than many of the freely available GIF twaddlers on the market -- for one thing, it has more options.
It supports merging several GIFs into a GIF animation; exploding an animation into its component frames; changing individual frames in an animation; turning interlacing on and off; adding transparency; adding delays, disposals, and looping to animations; adding or removing comments; flipping and rotation; optimizing animations for space; and changing images' colormaps, among other things. Extensive command-line options control which, if any, of these occur.

As the computer manufacturer Genesi S.à.r.l. announced, the company will take part as an exhibitor at the annual Southern California Linux Expo, which takes place on Nov. 22nd in Los Angeles, USA.
Further participators are, among others, IBM, Novell and Debian. Genesi will be represented by the CEOs Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck as well as Paul Adams and Thomas Morris of Genesi USA. At booth #42, the company will not only demonstrate the Pegasos with several variants of Linux and OpenBSD, but also their proprietary operating system MorphOS, which is explicitly mentioned in their self-depiction on the exposition's website:
"To compliment the Pegasos and provide a complete solution, Genesi has developed MorphOS - a preemptive multitasking operating system. MorphOS combines a modest footprint with scalability, high performance, and amazing ease of use for developers and end users. Its beautifully designed interface and modular object-oriented design offers a modern solution.
Together Pegasos and MorphOS provide a singularly powerful solution for both personal and professional applications!" (snx)

Court records of the trial Genesi vs. Amiga Inc. chronologically adapted
In a still running trial at the court Washington-West in Seattle, USA, has the German Thendic Electronic Components GmbH - respectively Genesi S.à.r.l. as their legal successor they claim to be with reference to the trial about a licence agreement - brought an action on January, 2nd 2003 against Amiga Inc.
Sammy Nordström, known as "Samface", has now made for the first time the referring court records - as far as they are publicly available - freely available in chronological order.
The lawsuit is all about an OEM licence dated November 2000 in which Amiga Inc. committed themselves against the Thendic Electronic Components GmbH to adapt AmigaDE to their products Cashboy, Mobicash, transponder smart chip readers, Cashboy@Home and WindowsCE terminal (or "Smartboy").
The point at issue here seems to be the second paragraph of appendix A that follows after the product listing that reads as follows: "Thendic has the right with the consent of Amiga at any time to add new products to this list to thereby implicate Amiga's obligations under the Agreement to integrate the Licensed Software into such additional Thendic Products. Amiga will not unreasonably withhold constent to expand the list of Thendic Products."
Therefore has Amiga Inc. given Thendic the right to add further Thendic products to this list at any time with the consequence that AmigaDE would have to be adapted to those. Amiga Inc. commits themselves not to unreasonably withhold their consent to the addition of single such further products to Thendic.
The question to be solved by the judge may well be whether this OEM licence is valid for the at that time by the formerly Thendic-France S.à.r.l. (now part of the Genesi group) exclusively world wide distributed PowerPC computer Pegasos or whether Amiga Inc. have the right to reject the adaption of AmigaDE to this product.
That Genesi S.à.r.l. themselves appeared as a plaintiff is based on the - according to them - possible transferability of the licence agreement as the Thendic Electronic Components GmbH as well as Thendic-France S.à.r.l. and Genesi S.à.r.l. have the same main shareholder, Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck.
The court records about this lawsuit have already been made available via the Internet before (as far as they had been publicly available) but to have access there you had to register (for free) at the owner of the site, Rich Woods, and then you received a password. Free accessible had made only chosen documents.
Update: (19.12.2017, 23:45, cg)
Changed link to the court documents to point to a local copy, since the original website has gone offline a decade ago. (snx) (Translation: wk)

Hyperion: Evert Carton now sole Managing Partner
As displayed on the corporate site of Hyperion Entertainment, the co-founder Evert Carton is now the company's sole Managing Partner. Before he shared this function with Ben Hermans.
As Ben Hermans said on Amigaworld.net, there has been no change in the OS4 project management.
In an e-mail to amiga-news.de, Ben Hermans confirmed that he had to hand over the daily administrative work at Hyperion to Evert Carton due to lack of time. But he'll continue to work for the company in legal matters. (snx)

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 23
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 23 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-15, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):
1) Amighista: Is Python to be included in the upcoming OS4.0 release? If yes, which version? Will it include a GUI binding (like wxPython, PyGTK or Python for QT)? Who's the person in charge for the porting?
Fleecy: Python is being considered as the cross platform scripting language for AmigaOS4. It is still too early to talk about the project as AmigaOS4.0 itself is the priority at the moment but progress is being made in determining how to create a version that will integrate well with and make use of all the new features of AmigaOS4. Important issues to consider include the GUI and how best to implement the concept of the "ARexx port".
2) Step: We are continuously seeing improvements on the OS4 front in shape of screenshots, progress reports, etc. but why dont we see this in regards of the DE/Anywhere?
Fleecy: As we have said on several occasions, the AmigaDE was always a technology set from which we were to develop product lines. The first product line we talked about was Amie, which was to be a Smartphone to Server operating environment. However, after 18 months of experience with Intent, it became apparent that it would not be able to span such a wide vision, being better suited to a content solution. This allowed us to restart AmigaOS development, with the aim of developing it over time into something approaching the original Amie concept, whilst implementing the Amiga Anywhere and AACE product lines from the AmigaDE technology set.
The current focus of AACE is content deployment, which means deploying one or more pieces of content in a closed or open mode onto software hosts - Windows, PocketPC, Smartphone, and then Linux and Symbian. We have been concentrating on card, download and on device deployments in standalone format. There have been no screenshots because all you see is the content itself running. Once we have this completed, we will finish the AACE player with the new interface, but again, this is just a content player. If you are looking for the Amie solution then you will be better off playing close attention to AmigaOS4, particular as the AG2 project starts to see technology becoming part of AmigaOS4 releases.
3) Troels: Have any work started in regard to porting DE to AOS4 and who is (or will be) doing the port?
Fleecy: The long announced plan has always been to have AmigaDE technology running on AmigaOS4.2, the first PPC outing for the AmigaDE. This plan has not changed. As is normal, the Tao-Group will do the host port, since the AmigaDE can only run on hosts provided by the Tao-Group. The CII will be exclusively done by them but they have asked that we help them on the PII.
Work on it will start when AmigaOS4.1 has shipped.
4) drebben: Why will the JIT not be used for OS components and how will the system know what is an OS compnent and what is not?
Fleecy: Accelerating only applications eases the JIT design and integration a lot and gives a much cleaner result since there is a clear separation between legacy applications (and their translated code) and the rest of the system. It also gives us the possibility to add certain kinds of code optimisations and otehr JIT options like translation buffer size s.o. on a per application basis.
Another reason are code segments where response time is more important than execution speed, e.g. interrupts.
Of course one could argue that the speed impact resulting from the remaining 68k library parts could result in a bad trade off against the benefits of a cleaner code base but then one should also remember that there will be virtually no time critical 68k code left in the system and therefore also virtually no loss of speed. If push comes to shove we can add a dedicated JIT translation service that takes care of system code but it simply isn't worth the effort.
Regarding the howto: That's a technical detail I don't want to discuss in the public, what can be said is that we can easily track which loaded code segments belong to which task and the JIT makes use of that functionality.
5) HMK: How old versions of AmigaOS will Amiga Inc. support with Boing Bags, security updates (if such), when OS4 gets released?
Fleecy: We obviously want to encourage the community to move towards AmigaOS4.0 with all of its inherent advantages. We also want to encourage them to move to new hardware but recognise that the investment in classic machines and the PPC accelerators has been considerable, which is why we will support them if we can through AmigaOS4.0 and perhaps further.
As far as AmigaOS3 is concerned we have to look at the business arguments for continuing to support it. We are of course interested in the views of the community in this respect. In short, we will end support for AmigaOS3 but it is a question of when.
6) IonMane: Why would you want to develop on a cross-platform environment (= CPE) to draw people specifically to your own platform? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having AmigaOS 4 in the first place?
Fleecy: I'm afraid I don't understand this question, or at least have read it to mean at least two contradictory things. Can you send me a clearer version privately (fleecy@amiga.com) and I'll answer you and have Amigaworld update this Q&A.
7) kvinkunx: Did you already enter into talks with the authors of OpenOffice? This freeware office package already runs on several platforms defined as 'main' and would be really handy for Amiga users, an official approach of Amiga Inc. may convince the authors to do an A1 port I think.
Fleecy: I don't want to provide answers relating to specific third party applications or products but rest assured that we are well aware of the essential applications needed by Amiga users if the Amiga platform is to be a compelling choice for digital users and activity is progressing. I would point out as I have done before that it all boils down to size of market and amount of resources, two things we are working hard to improve.
8) Asemoon: AmigaOS4 is the main reason for me to get an AmigaOne. However I would also like to give Linux a try but I do not want to have to deal with bootloader menus all the time I boot the hardware. Wouldn't it be a good idea to create a bootloader for the AmigaOne which automaticly boots AmigaOS4 and only brings up the bootloader menu after pressing a certain key?
Fleecy: Yes it would 8-)
The situation is more complex than that. The booloader is designed to boot OS4 and Linux (or any other OS that is able to live on RDB partitions); however no actual code for Linux is ready. What we are planning as a temporary measure is yet-another-env-variable with an indicator on which kernel to load by default. The whole issue is only valid if you install OS4 and Linux on the same HD. If you install on different HDs, no problem: you set a default boot method and can change it by interrupting the autoboot.
9) TheJackal: Are there plans for the new graphics library (or Vega) to have the ability to use 32bits per channel, (128bits per pixel). This would allow floats to be used instead of u8's (0..255)?
Fleecy: I don't want to say too much about Vega since we are often accused of talking about things rather than doing. We recognise however that most people will judge AmigaOS4 by what they see and if Vega is to be the mechanism by which what they see is created, then it is going to have to have some pretty impressive and far sighted technology within it.
10) Angrybrit: I'd like to ask about the Media player that's gonna be included in AmigaOS4. Is there gonna be an official one or are we gonna have to adopt a third party like Mplayer/VideoLan?
Fleecy: MooVid is planned for AmigaOS4.0.

ZoneXplorer: Version 1.2 Released
The fractal generator ZoneXplorer by Elena Novaretti has reached version 1.2. The main thing is that JPEG support for saving images has been integrated (with the Navigator as well as the Renderer), a functionality advance for which the author extends thanks to Frank Wille, due to his support.
System Requirements:
PowerPC Version:
- MorphOS (Pegasos or PowerUP)
- ClassAct (Aminet) or ReAction (AmigaOS 3.5+)
- Hi-/True-Color-Desktop (8-Bit not supported)
68k Version:
- AmigaOS 3.5+
- Hi-/True-Color-Desktop on P96-/CGX-compatible graphic card (8bit not supported)
- png.datatype
The use of an emulator like Amithlon or UAE on a fast x86 computer is not strictly required for the 68k version, but is strongly recommended.

SN-EuroArchiv Coin Collecting Program Available from Aminet
SN-EuroArchiv V1.0 is now available from Aminet (109 KB).
SN-EuroArchiv is a coin collection management program designed especially for European coins. It manages single coins, coin sets, memorative coins, coin rolls, and starter sets in a simple fashion and allows an overview of one's coin collection through tables and statistics.
For the next few days to two weeks the appearance of the version 1.1 on Aminet is already being announced. Two functions are included, one for the overview of the conditions and strike quality, along with counting of the Euro coins, and one which points out the expenditures involved with your collection in monthly steps, so that you receive an overview of how much you spent each month on Euro coins. Further, there is to then be a possibility to also calculate the expenses of associated materials like coin cases, albums and so on.

Amithlon: the Amithlon Kernel Project
Because the development of the Amiga emulator Amithlon has ceased for a while, it's become considerably more difficult to get Amithlon to cooperate on modern PC hardware. On account of that Gary Colville decided to start the Amithlon
Kernel Project.
In doing this, Gary has taken advantage of a characteristic of the Amithlon product: Amithlon consists of two components - the actual emulator as well as a tailored Linux kernel, on which the emulator runs. While the former has commercial status and thus may not be modified by outsiders, the latter is under an open source license and may therefore may be expanded by a third party. Through this, support for modern chipsets and graphic cards is made possible.
Because new hardware costs money, and Gary can really only focus on the hardware that he personally owns, he is calling (title link) for financial support from interested users.
Which hardware he can purchase, and thereby support in Amithlon, depends on demand on the part of the users. The most needed support at this time seems to be for the "NForce 2" chipset, used in the products "GeForce FX", "VIA KT600" and "GeForce 4MX."

MorphOS: MLdonkey 2.5-4 released
MLdonkey is a multi-platform multi-networks peer-to-peer client. Originally, it was the first open-source client to access the eDonkey network. The protocol was 'reverse-engineered' using an efficient protocol sniffer, Pandora.
Currently, with eDonkey , it supports several large networks, such as Overnet, Bittorrent, Gnutella (Bearshare, Limewire, etc), Gnutella2 (Shareaza), Fasttrack (Kazaa, Imesh, Grobster), Soulseek (beta), Direct-Connect (alpha), and Opennap (alpha).
The MorphOS release does not only come with the mlnet binary which was done by Sigbjørn Skjæret using his Objective-Caml port for MorphOS, it also features some extra stuff like zuul, an open-source PHP interface for MLdonkey, which was adjusted for use with Amiga browsers. (cg) (Translation: cg)
