infoSync: Amiga gets into Linux PDAs
Under the title "Amiga gets into Linux PDAs" and the highlighted heading "When Sharp's Linux-based Zaurus PDA hits the U.S. and Europe, software developed by old-timer Amiga will provide that old black magic." some positive news about AmigaDE on the Zaurus of Sharp was published on the infoSync website.

The announcement briefly describes the value of Amiga during the 80s and 90s and the capabilities of AmigaDE and Zaurus. However, no distinction was made between AmigaDE and Zaurus. (sd) (Translation: sr)

AmigaDE: games and jobs from Kaliko
Kaliko, the makers of 'Last in Line', a puzzle/board game, which came fourth in the Top Ten AmigaDE Games of 2001, have now announced their line-up of AmigaDE games for 2002:
  • BrainTeaser (March/April)
  • Kaliko Minigolf (March/April)
  • Pirate's Puzzle (April/June)

"BrainTeaser: the furry edition" is being developed in cooperation with Quality Team, the makers of the action adventure 'Sixth Sense Investigations'.

BrainTeaser is a game similar to Tetris in which you have to link three or more blocks with the same picture so that they will disappear and there is space for new ones.

The blocks appear from the bottom and you have to move them like a shuffle game in order to link the same blocks with each other. This makes the game harder and more different from other games which are similar to Tetris.

Kaliko would like to release further games this year and for this they need help. They are currently seeking a number of talented individuals such as Amiga-programmers who have good knowledge of VP assembler, C or C++ as well as Amiga-programmers (680x0/PPC) who have sound knowledge of assembler, C or C++. They are also looking for creative game designers and talented 2D artists. If you want to contact them, just send an e-mail to info@kaliko.net. (sd) (Translation: sr)

ScummVM is an open source implementation of the LucasArts S.C.U.M.M. systems, which process game data files such as Maniac Mansion.

New Angband ports for Amiga
Hi There...

I've finally got around to finishing off all of my Amiga compiles, and they've all been uploaded. Details below.

News first!

68000 Support
I've decided to drop 68000 support - I'm going by the assumption that if a user has enough memory to play some of these variants, then they will have a better processor than the bog standard one. All variants will now be targetted for the 68020. Demands from some of the Zangband-based variants are increasing, and with the addition of Lua into Angband and Zangband, and inveitably into their offspring, then a basic unexpanded 68000 system just wouldn't be able to cope.

It's been a while since I've had any feedback from a 68000 user - if what I'm doing is such a bad move, please do not hesitate to contact me, and I can put together 68000-targetted executables.

New code
Well, not exactly new code, but all of the variants now use the same Amiga-specific code. Previously, Zangband and it's variants used the most up-to-date code, and Angband was still stuck with some old code that was several years old. Not any more - Angband now benefits from the new code too. I've altered some bits and pieces, but you probably won't notice much of a difference. The main difference is that Angband graphics now work the way they should do, along with masking. Also, if you use the Adam Bolt tiles, these will now work with all versions, not just the Zangband-based ones.

Lua
The Lua-based variants all compile and run successfully for the Amiga. I have compiled all of the Angband alpha releases (2.9.4, 2.9.5, 2.9.6, 2.9.6.alpha2 and 2.9.6alpha3) and all of the Zangband dev releases (2.7.0 Pre-release 1, 2.7.0 Pre-release 2, 2.7.0 Pre-release 3 and 2.7.0 final). If you're eager to take a look, the Zangband dev releases are available below, along with the versions with Shayne Steele's option and branding patches. Angband alphas remain unreleased.

Uploads
These have no long been done, so you'll have to wait for Robert to move them all to their respective locations.

Conglomoband 0.0.1 - conglomoband-001-ami.lha (1437K)

CyAngband 0.3.2 - cyangband-032-ami.lha (506K)

D11-Angband 1.1.0 - d11angband-110-ami.lha (580K)

EyAngband 0.4.0d - eyangband-040d-ami.lha (658K)

Gumband 2.2.0a - gumband-220a-ami.lha (784K)

Hengband 1.0.9r1
There's a little bit of a problem on the graphics for this variant - light doesn't seem to bahave the way you'd expect it to. You won't see the yellow glow around the player, and floors won't light up as you'd expect. Apart from this, it's OK. All lighting behaves properly in ASCII mode.

hengband-109r1-ami.lha (1414K)

NTAngband 0.2 - ntangband-02-ami.lha (1286K)

PernAngband 5.1.1 - pernangband-511-ami.lha (1612K)

UnAngband 0.4.8g - unangband-048g-ami.lha (830K)

Zangband 2.6.2 & Option Patch 1.6 & Branding Patch 1.3
Shayne Steele's patches have been included here - for further details of the patches, check out his site.

zangband-262o16b13-ami.lha (961K)

Zangband 2.7.0 Dev Release
Chance to check out the current stable dev release with Lua scripting.

zangband-270-ami.lha (1184K)

Textviewer: EvenMore - new plugin
I have created a new Generic plugin. If all the plugins fail to recognise a binary file, this plugin will open the file and strip all lines ending with CR or LF.

This is a 'last resort' plugin, there will be files it will not work on due to formatting differences, but it can be used for files for some files which no plugins exist yet (I tested it on an Outlook 2000 email, worked with no glitches, works with a few glitches on some Mac text files).

Download now for free at the above link! (ps)

e.p.i.c. interactive: THE FEEBLE FILES Amiga-Version in production
THE FEEBLE FILES has now been completed for the Amiga and sent off to go into production. The finished game should be sent out to all those who have preordered the game within the next 10-12 days. THE FEEBLE FILES is a cartoon adventure from the makers of the famous Simon The Sorcerer series.

You are Feeble or rather you're a down trodden Grenelon who just happens to be called Feeble... Rendered animation, stereo sound and a plot of epic proportions take this adventure into a different galaxy. Witty and humerous but with dark undertones. THE FEEBLE FILES contains acts of betrayal, intrigue, revolution and even a bit of cross dressing. Add to that around 80 locations to visit, six thousand voice lines to interact with, there should be plenty to keep everyone happy without the aid of chemical supplements.

THE FEEBLE FILES for the Amiga comes on 2 CDs and contains both full english and german speech versions. The Amiga version requires either an Amiga with 68060, 4 MByte Gfxboard and 32 MByte RAM or an Amiga with PPC, 4 MByte Gfxboard and 32 MByte RAM.

You can find more information on THE FEEBLE FILES in the projects section under the title link. (ps)

CD32-Emulator for Windows: Akiko v1.2
Finally the time has come! A new version of Akiko, CD32 and CDTV emulator for Microsoft(r) Windows(r), can be downloaded from the Airsoft Softwair homepage (http://www.airsoftsoftwair.com/) Version 1.2 is a major update which is about 20% faster and supports emulation of the CD32's nonvolatile memory including a cool nv ram editor which supports importing, exporting, locking & patching of save states.

Example of patching a save game is included in the documentation. Additionally Akiko has now a real Joypad emulation which means that the user can map every key / joystick button to the CD32's joypad buttons. Akiko also supports the emulation of the language identifier of the CD32 and CDTV now so some games appear now automatically in the language you configured in the Akiko settings. Finally there were some bug fixes and improvements in the single patches as well as an extended documentation.

If you still haven't registered Akiko (only $15US/15 EUR) you should have a look at Defender Of The Crown 2 CDTV which can now also be played with the Akiko demo version. But don't forget to set your native language to the CDTV's language in the Akiko settings so that the game appears in it. By the way, Akiko does not require the extended ROMs of the CD32 & CDTV. Kickstart 3.1 and 1.3 are enough. Registered users please send an email to akiko@airsoftsoftwair.de with "subscribe" subject and you'll get the latest version (you'll only have to subscribe once, then you'll always get the latest version of Akiko) If you haven't registered yet, you should definitely get the demo version of Akiko! #AmigaFun: chat with Hyperion on 18.02.2002
On Monday, 18. February 2002, beginning at 19.00 h will Steffen Häuser, Thomas and Hans-Jörg Frieden from Hyperion answer to questions on the IRC Amiga channel #AmigaFun. All three are programmers at Hyperion and deal with AmigaOS 4 and with games ports, like for example Quake 2. The chat with Hyperion is organised in co-operation with the Amiga Future.

How to access the IRC channel #AmigaFun:

IRC server (enter WITHOUT "irc."): rollingrock.altnet.org
IRC port: 6667
IRC channel: #amigafun

Should the server fail you can access the channel via this server:

amigafun.ma.cx (please enter again without "irc.").

Further information especially for IRC beginners can be found on the #AmigaFun homepage.

HINT:
The chat can be accessed via HTML chat from the #AmigaFun homepage, Amiga Future homepage and from the amiga-news.de forum. As we can't guarantee an error free functioning of the HTML chat and programs like AMIRC or BlackIRC are anyway nicer to use we recommend to use an IRC client in any way.

Possible languages are German and English. The logfiles of the chat will be later released on the homepages of the Amiga Future and the #AmigaFun in German and in English.
Stefan Martens: "I'd like this time to point to the fact that nobody else may release the logfiles of the chat this time." (ps) (Translation: wk)

Andreas R. Kleinert (E-Mail)

Andreas R. Kleinert: References to pirate copies of my programms wanted
Today, I read the article about shareware and pirate copies on amiga-news.de. Very interesting. Well, it is that from time to time people send me illegal keyfiles and/or key generators for my programs - sometimes refering to the source where to find those.

This often enables me to deactivate the respective keys, which respond to a certain pattern. So there are faithful users too - who nevertheless stumble upon such things from time to time - and help program authors to embank pirate copying.

I would like to offer the following to those users:

Who will send me keyfiles for my programs (or the respective generators), up to now not recognized as "pirate keys" by those, will receive an original keyfile at a time. In especially fiddly cases I will charge even more. For multi-transmittal applies: "The first to send in, will win".

Naturally data will be kept in confidence and anonymous if desired (the real name is only required for the keyfile).

P.S.: Dubious software gets tested under UAE, insofar transfecting virsues is useless. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Shareware: Bitwise Operator: The Plain Truth About Piracy
In the above mentioned English article by "Ambrosia Software", a company that develops software for Apple computers, the company's experience with shareware and privacy is described.

The change from a fully functional shareware to a more crippled version didn't cause people to register 5 times more often as mentioned in the article "Why Do People Register, Does Crippling Work, Does Anybody Really Know?" by Colin Messitt but it triggered off an increase in sales figures.

A change of the registration procedure in the middle of last year showed that more than 50% of the people who had installed the update for the software "Snapz Pro X" were using a pirate code to activate the software.

Whatever this may be ;-). There isn't a lot of code available but it should run on all boards such as Riva 128, GeForce2 and Quadro.

Georg Steger has removed a few problems in the DOS and Startup code which shouldn't try to examine the command line if the program was started from the workbench.library. He has also improved JanoEdit (catalogues are now created. Some small bugfixes for AROS). (sd) (Translation: sr)

AudioLabs (ANF)

AudioLabs: AHI driver for Sunrize AD516
Chris Brenner has released an AHI-driver for the Sunrize audio board "AD516" (Zorro II), available on Aminet.

The Sunrize's AD516 has been one of the most interesting ZII audio boards. Unfortunately, until now, there haven't been any drivers of any kind for this card, leaving owners in need for realtime software with the only option to use Studio16, the application developed for this hardware by Sunrize and bundled with the product.

Lack of detailed documentation, and the fact that Sunrize left the market, prevented people from taking advantage of more modern non-linear editing software, developed years after Studio16. Until now.

Chris Brenner has just released his new excellent AHI driver, available on Aminet, that now allows AHI-compatible applications to access the AD516 A/D D/A converters (for SMPTE support, Studio16 is still the right tool). Several applications have already been tested and work fine.

Early reports about ProStationAudio and this new development say that the driver exhibits low-latency, extremely important to allow using mixing automation and the 30+ realtime DSP effects for ProStationAudio. More information soon, as soon as they arrive.

To download the driver, search for "AD516" on Aminet. Information about the developer is in the driver archive, don't forget to send him feedback.

In the Dev-archive the hardware of the board is described. This description is incomplete but good enough to program drivers.

Suite101.com (ANF)

John Chandler: The Light At The End Of The Tunnel
On 31 January 2002 John Chandler published on suite101 a new English column about the Amiga in which he talks about AmigaOS 4.0.

"One thing that anyone still using an Amiga has gained over the years is a sense of patience. No matter how tough things get, no matter how much the situation ups and downs, most Amiga users will remain fairly patient in the face of frustrations that would have owners of other platforms cursing and wailing. Yes we do get moments of despair, yes sometimes it does look bleak and you can be forgiven for losing the optimism and thick-skins built up in the post-Commodore years... but then things come along and suddenly everything looks bright again." ..... Vim (ANF)

Editor: Vim-6.0.160
VIM is an improved version of the editor "vi", one of the standard text editors on UNIX systems.

VIM adds many of the features that you would expect in an editor: unlimited undo, syntax coloring, split windows, visual selection, graphical user interface (read: menus, mouse control, scrollbars, text selection), and much much more.

VIM runs on many operating systems: AmigaOS, AtariMiNT, BeOS, DOS, MacOS, MachTen, OS/2, RiscOS, VMS, and Windows (95/98/NT4/NT5/2000)

In edition 1 vol. 1 of the Free Software Magazine there is an article which mentions amongst other things how VIM came into being.

VIM was developed by Bram Moolenaar first for Amiga and was released for the first time on Fish #591 (November 1991). (sd) (Translation: sr)

Amiga Arena - You never leave completely :)
Amiga Arena - Update
I'd like to thank very much all those who gave me so much positive feedback with their mails and comments! The Amiga Arena will stay online and the support for the game "PuzzelBOBS" is also guaranteed. In irregular intervals will smaller updates of the Amiga Arena be possible and still incoming interviews etc. will of course be released. A "time out" for an undefined period of time will come as announced, though.
Thank you very much for your understanding.

New cartoon: "IBM and Linux", cartoon gallery added

Since June we have to get by without the wonderful and accurate cartoons by Torsten Dudai, as he's suffering from a lack of time aswell as a lack of motivation for further cartoons.

The more we're pleased that Torsten found two nice pieces while searching through old backups that he wants to share with us. First there's a PDF version of the old Amiga park cartoon, perfectly suited for printing as a poster (to be found under the title link), and then there's a previously unreleased cartoon about IBM and Linux done about six months ago.

Additionally, we created a gallery that contains all of Torsten Dudai's released cartoons, and we're inviting you to take a nostalgic trip browsing it. (ps) (Translation: wk)

Screenblanker: Matrix Version 1.8 for 68020 and MorphOS
Oliver Fabre has released version 1.8 of his screen saver 'Matrix'. The blanker requires OS3.1 and CGX/P96. The following changes were made:

  • Fixed graphic bug introduced in 1.7: character erasure was one pixel too big horizontally and vertically.
  • Changed default screen selection (when no modeid is given): now opens a 4 (under AGA) or 8 (under CGX) bit depth screen of the same size as the WB, or of the size given by the Width and Height tooltypes. If that fails, clone the WB screen (that was the default behaviour previously). Using a lower depth screen should improve the speed (and it is necessary for the ColourCycle option to work).
  • Added Colour option to change the Matrix colour. [Rafo]
  • Added ColourCycle option to cycle through all colours of the palette, like the WB blanker does...
  • Changed ThreadsLength to be a percentage of the screen height (threadslength=100 means 1 thread per column in average, 50 means 2 threads, etc.). Default value 75.
  • Changed commodity name from "Matrix Blanker" to "MatrixBlanker" for MagicExchange usage. [DET Nicolas]
  • Minor fixes and improvements...

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 Welcome to another Amiga year! Each new year we see as a community
gives me hope for the future. And that despite having only a few
stories for you this month. We've received suggestions that we become
a bi-monthly publication because of the shrinking amount of real news
in the Amiga community. However, we will resist that for now as it
would make what stories we do have older than we'd like when you
receive them. We'd rather send smaller issues, at least once a month.
 One thing you'll notice about this issue - there are many update
stories about upcoming Amiga shows. Looks like fun. Hey, a year where
Amiga Inc. continues to survive in a "down" economy, and make progress
against their business plan, plus we have several shows to enjoy
throughout the world, could be very interesting and positive. At
least, we'll start the year hoping so.

Hello Brad

 I just read your latest Update. In it you corrected the information
about AmiWest from 2001 to read 2002.

 Ah-ha! I think you still have the date wrong. You list AmiWest 2002
as being on 28 and 29 July 2002. July 28 is Sunday and July 29 is
Monday. Normally AmiWest is held on the last weekend in July, Saturday
and Sunday, not Sunday and Monday.

 According to my calendar the AmiWest Show should be on Saturday, 27
July and Sunday, 28 July 2002.

 At least the 27th and 28th are the dates I plan on attending.

Regards,

Harry
~~~~~~
Harry,
 Sigh. I just print 'em as I get 'em sometimes. I suspect your
calendar reading skills got the right information. Maybe it's a clever
trick on AmiWest's part to keep getting a bit of information in the
E-mail to the E-ditor section. :-)
 Thnks for the correction,
 Brad
Mr. Webb,
     Yes, I remember your "Dos Lab" Articles in "JUMPDISK".
I would be extremely surprised if Microsoft did not engineer
Amiga's demise.
 You've certainly been a part of the community for some time. Thanks
for staying with us! "Jumpdisk" was quite the publication. (And I
appreciate being remembered.)
 When I look at recent Microsoft product announcements and plans, it
does look to me as if they are after the market Amiga has staked out.
Yes, it makes me nervous.
 Brad
Greetings one and all:
 I have received many e-mails reminding me of the need to announce the
STB OEM partner. We at Amiga are well aware that it was scheduled for
last week and, we were expecting the legal department of the partner
to have approved the press release. Unfortunately when one is dealing
with multi-billion dollar companies it can, more often than not, take
longer than planned.
 We did receive the OK to announce to our developers and this was done
last week. All NDA developers know the details of the signed OEM deal.
However, we are going to have to wait a little while longer for the
rest of the Amiga community to see the public release.
 I am sorry for the delay, but it will be worth the wait. In fact, we
will probably have a couple more that we can announce at the same
time.
 We should have the public announcement out by next week.
Stay tuned !
      A M I G A   O S   4 . 0   D E V E L O P M E N T   N E W S
Leuven, Belgium, January 21, 2002.
 Let me start off by wishing everybody in the Amiga community all the
best in 2002!
 As you know, on November 1, 2001 Hyperion Entertainment entered into
a license agreement with Amiga Inc. to produce Amiga OS 4.0 for PPC
based systems.
 Since my presentation in Cologne at the Amiga 2001 show on November
17-18, very substantial progress was made which I am now ready to
share with you.
 Some of you have expressed some misgivings about the lack of progress
reports on OS 4.0 development but I hope I can count on your
understanding as all of us have been extremely busy, even through the
holiday season, to bring you what is unquestionably the most ambitious
OS upgrade since Amiga OS 3.0.
 Now I know that many of you are sceptical because of the scope of the
project and because similar promises were made in the past.
 To those people I would like to point out that Hyperion Entertainment
does not enter into contracts lightly and that we have a track-record
carrying out commercial development and contract-work for Windows,
Mac, Linux, Amiga and Amiga DE/Elate.
 We have brought together a truly impressive development team of some
25 people building on the OS 3.5 and 3.9 development team whilst
adding several well-known and respected Amiga developers to the mix.
 Im very pleased to say that Dave Haynie has agreed to serve as a
technical consultant.
 Youll be hard-pressed to find a more experienced team for the job!
 The feature-set of OS 4.0 has now been finalised to a large extent.
 We cant guarantee that every single feature listed here will make it
in the initial release of OS 4.0 but this the feature-set that we have
contractually committed to delivering.
 You will also note that for the first time in many, many years very
substantial work is being done on Intuition, one of the core elements
of the Amiga OS. Having a PPC native version of Intuition available
will make a very noticeable difference speed-wise.
 We intend for OS 4.0 to be disk-based or at least partly disk-based
and partly flashrom based even for current Amigas. More about that in
a later update.
 We also intend for OS 4.0 to be installed effortlessly from CD and
from scratch without the need for an existing OS install.
 As we have taken on more work (Intuition etc.) and folded some of the
functionality originally planned for OS 4.2 into OS 4.0, this
inevitably means the original February release-date might slip
somewhat but all in all we believe that the end-result will be
technologically more satisfying.
 Come end of January, I hope to have the biggest chunk of the legal
work for OS 4.0 behind me which will allow me to provide you with more
regular updates.
 I know full well that your patience has been sorely tested over the
last years so I understand your impatience and even your scepticism
but I can assure you that the Amiga OS is in good hands and that we
will deliver.
 In closing, I would like to invite everybody out there who (out of an
understandable frustration with the neglect of the Amiga OS by its
respective past owners) decided to take matters in his own hands, to
work with us, rather than against us.
 Ben Hermans, LL.M Managing partner Hyperion Entertainment VOF
Amiga OS 4.0 provisional feature list
 Exec Second Generation (Exec SG)
 Exec is the kernel of the AmigaOS and is currently written in 68K
assembly.
 Exec is being re-written in C and new functionality will be
introduced to
 allow the deployment of OS 4.x on any suitable PPC hardware.
The following features are planned:
   o Hardware abstraction layer
   o Virtual memory
   o New library interface
   o Resource tracking and management
   o Optional memory protection
   o WarpOS backwards compatibility
68K Just in Time emulation
PPC native TCP/IP stack
   o - implemented as a single shared library
   o - compatible with the Amiga standard "bsdsocket" API, as defined
       by the  AmiTCP product
   o - enhanced API for more control over the inner workings and
     configuration
   o - built-in DHCP client (e.g. for cable modems)
   o - Internet Superserver (inetd)
   o - IP filtering and networking address translation
   o - drivers for asynchronous PPP (dial-up networking) and PPP over
     Ethernet (for ADSL and cable modems)
   o - AmiSSL V2.0
PPC native filesystem (FFS2)
 FFS2 is a fully backwards compatible re-implementation in C of the
Fast File System. It supports media > 4 GByte, and a new variant of
the file/directory name storage format which allows for long file
names (up to 108 characters).
Recovery and Salvage tools
 Comprehensive suite of salvage and recovery tools including Salvage,
Undelete, Unformat, Repair, RDBSalv, ReOrg/Defrag, Check Integrity
etc.
PPC native RTG system
 The PPC native RTG system (based on Picasso 96 V3) allows for the use
of modern graphics cards on the Amiga. Drivers for all current Zorro
II/III cards as well as drivers for the Permedia 2/3, Voodoo 3, Matrox
G450/G550 and ATI Radeon are planned. An arithmetically optimised PPC
native version of layers.library is also planned.
Warp3D
 New version of Warp3D, the powerful yet low-level 3D API which is
both available on the classic Amiga and intent/Amiga DE and which
allows developers to rapidly migrate 3D content between both
platforms. Drivers for Permedia 2/3, Voodoo 3, Matrox G450/G550 and
ATI Radeon are planned.
OpenGL 1.3 support (Mesa 4.0)
 OpenGL is a cross-platform (Mac, Linux, Windows, AmigaDE etc.)
high-level 3D API originally developed by Silicon Graphics. Support
for OpenGL 1.3 will be provided by porting the open source project
Mesa (which now passes all SGI compliance tests) which will sit on top
of Warp3D so that graphics-card functionality not currently offered by
the OpenGL API may be supported nonetheless.
PPC native RTA system (AHI)
 A Retargetable Audio System allows the use of plug-in soundcards (PCI
or Zorro II). AHI by Martin Blom is currently the de facto standard on
the Amiga and a PPC native version will be offered with support for a
wide variety of soundcards including but not limited to all current
Amiga soundcards and the Soundblaster 128 and Live (EMU10K1) cards.
PPC native Intuition and Reaction
 Reaction is the BOOPSI based GUI system for the Amiga, introduced in
OS 3.5 and extended in OS 3.9. Existing ROM classes will be enhanced
or even rewritten for a betterand more consistent look. The requester
handling will be improvedas well as the Intuition menus. Moreover a
new preferences system will allow the user to change more aspects of
the GUI.
Other features:
   o Drag and Drop support
   o New ghosted look
Intuition will sport the following new features (more planned):
   o New DrawInfo pens
   o Enhanced window borders
   o Resolution-adaptive system gadgets
   o User-selectable styles for system glyphs and 3D frames with
     support for
     external plug-ins
   o Configurable look for proportional gadgets
   o New-style (3D recessed) disabled look for gadgets where
     applicable
   o Gad-Tools enhancements (pop-up capability for cycle gadgets
     etc.)
   o Full-user control of Workbench palette
SCSI drivers for SCRIPTS based SCSI controllers
WarpInput API (working title)
 WarpInput is an API for multimedia controller devices (akin to
DirectInput on Windows) which allows a programmer to provide support
through one API for a wide variety of input-devices such as keyboard,
mouse, joysticks (analog and digital), track-ball, Playstation
controller etc.
Minimal USB stack
PPC native datatypes
New HDToolbox replacement
Support for TrueType/OpenType fonts
over time, beginning with our first two PDA titles Convex and Planet
Zed. Zeoneo will demonstrate their products at the show running on a
desktop PC, and a couple of PDAs -- including the new Sharp SL5000D.
 Zeoneo might very well have something new to demonstrate, but details
of that won`t be given out until the actual release date.
 The Zeoneo Web Site details the two products currently on sale for
AmigaDE.
 Computer City also operate under the Sultan (systems & software)
brand and have published the EuroCD series, and more recently Audio
Evolution and MediaPoint, now developed by Sultan.
 Computer City plan to bring MediaPoint RTG, the first version of the
next-generation MediaPoint, which will support graphics cards,
soundcards and new filetypes. They also plan to demonstrate Audio
Evolution 4, the successor to Audio Evolution targeted directly at the
AmigaOne and other powerful PPC Amiga computers.
MEDIATOR AND SHARK FULLY COMPATIBLE
 Some news services have quoted untrue statements made by Mr. Harald
Frank, VMC, in the Mediator Mailing List about products made by Elbox
Computer.
Here we would like to explain:
 Since 16 January 2002, Mr. Harald Frank has been systematically
breaching the netiquette binding in the Mediator Mailing List by way
of sending messages offensive and abusive against our company,
employees of our company, our products and -- most of all -- even our
product users.
 Mr. Harald Frank presented himself in these messages as a person
completely devoid of elementary principles of personal humane culture.
It is evident now that his technical knowledge on hardware comes from
gossips from third persons -- and his ideas do not reflect actual and
valid technical knowledge.
To make it clear beyond any doubt on our products:
 ALL the Mediator versions (Mediator PCI 1200, Mediator PCI ZIV and
Mediator PCI 4000), starting with the very first piece sold may work
completely problem-free with SharkPPC (+) G3/G4 cards. (There is NO
need for any hardware update).
 Due to Mr. Harald Frank statements, which were far from cultural and
used offensive language, grossly breaching Yahoo Terms of Service, we
have applied to the Yahoo administrators to remove him from this list.
Best regards,
Mariusz Wloczysiak
                                             Warsaw, Poland 2002-01-08
 Some time has passed since I wrote a similar letter. As the beginning
of a new year is a good time for changes I would like to share with
you some information which will surely get your interest.
 Half a year has passed since we introduced in the market our main
product, the first PCI bridge for Amiga 3000/4000 computers which
could be connected to the Zorro 3 slots - "Prometheus". It was an
interesting period for us, which allowed us to gain a lot of valuable
experience. First of all I would like to thank very much all the
Prometheus users for buying our product and for the faith you have in
us. Also I would like to thank all those who appreciated our efforts
and objectively judged the company and the product. We always try to
keep our promises. I would consider it my personal failure if I had
disappointed you.
 For several months we have been working really hard trying to keep up
the development of our company in such difficult times for the IT
market. We entered a fruitful co-operation with many firms and people,
for example the unwavering Amiga Inc. (our first game for Amiga DE -
Boing'em is already on the market, and next are being prepared); with
a little help from us Amiga is creating AmigaOS 4.0. Irreplaceable
Hyperion provides us with its wonderful 3D drivers and the great team:
Alexander Kneer and Tobias Abt continue to give us newer and newer 2d
drivers. I would like to thank all the above mentioned as well as a
whole lot of other companies and people whose names I cannot specify
for lack of space [I'm awfully sorry!] for a possibility of
co-operation, their patience and trust they have in us; I do hope that
our acquaintance/co-operation will prove even more fruitful in future
than it has proved so far.
 Now I would like to present to you the results of our hard work.
First of all, "Prometheus". We have finished the work on the firmware
upgrade. What does it mean? From now on, "Prometheus" can operate more
PCI cards, and especially Fast Ethernet cards, TV tuners and
soundcards. The drivers for these cards will appear very quickly after
we do the upgrade. The first one will probably be available in this
month. I would like to remind you here that our drivers are completely
free and the firmware upgrade will be free as well. To make things
easier for you, we prepared two options for providing you with the
upgrade. Option one is for people who do not want (or are not keen on
doing so) to do anything on their own. Those of you can send your
Prometheus cards to us (or your local dealer) and the upgrade will be
done and the card returned to you. Of course, you will have to pay the
shipment costs and wait. Therefore, there is a second option: you can
order a programming device which allows to flash the Prometheus chips
just like any flashROM. The device is connected to the serial port,
flashing lasts some seconds and that is all. For people who already
own Prometheus boards, the programming device is FREE. You just have
to order it from your local dealer or directly from us.
 This does not, of course, apply to people who will buy our board from
now on. The chips there are upgraded with the latest firmware flash,
so you do not have to worry. The next change is connected with the
Euro coming to the EU. From now on, the suggested price of the
Prometheus board is 219 EURO. To convince you even stronger to buy our
product, we now add to each Prometheus sold some bonus software - a
great program for learning English language - English Teacher 5.
 And last, but not least: our webpage has changed. Many things have
been rebuilt, the files section should now be more clear, as well as
the whole page. We hope you will like it. We are launching the foreign
side of our Shop very soon, therefore people from countries without
local dealers will be able to buy our products. I hope that is good
news for you. We will inform you as things progress, according to our
slogan "No promises, just solutions". We have not forgotten about the
PPC cards. We are working together with independent developers and it
seems like we will be able to give you the solutions for the time
Amiga OS 4.0 is shipped.
Please support us!
Yours,
Filip Dab-Mirowski
CEO
Idruna Software
Idruna Software Launches Pocket Phojo
Paul Nolan, who is well-known by his picture manipulation software called 'Photogenics', has introduced a new software of this manner called Pocket Phojo for handhelds.
»Idruna Software Launches Pocket Phojo, the First Handheld Photo-Editing and Wireless Transmission Solution Specifically for Photojournalists
San Diego, CA -- January 30th, 2002 -- Idruna Software Inc., an innovative provider of desktop and mobile graphics software is pleased to announce the launch of Pocket Phojo, the first handheld photo editing and wireless transmission solution specifically designed for photojournalists. Instead of requiring a bulky laptop to get photos to the press agencies, photojournalists can now fit all of the tools they need in their pocket. For situations such as rapidly breaking stories, or in locations where laptops are impractical, this represents a breakthrough in the time required to get a photo from the camera to the photo desk.«
For instance if you open a Workbench-window but you delete some files from the Shell you can see how the appropriating icons vanishes out of your window.
StrICQ
Messenger: StrcICQ V2 - Second BETA-Version
On the homepage of StrICQ the second BETA version of the client V2 is released.
Download: STRICQv2.lha
Important hints for installation:
  1. Unarchive to its own directory. STRICQ and STRICQ v2 are incompatible.
  2. Only run STRICQ v2 from a shell prompt (I have not tested it with an icon, are you brave?)
  3. There is a lot of debug output to the shell window, you may need to send me a copy of it.
  4. Run the program, it will not be able to get online right away.
  5. Enter your Nick (whatever), your UIN, and your Password. Click 'Save'.
  6. Close the program by using the close window button on the contact list window.
  7. Your prefs are now saved.
  8. Restart the program and if all went well, you should now be online.
Know Problems and Caveats: IMPORTANT!
Amiga commercial (4min and 30sec) from 1992 discovered
A 4-part Amiga commercial from 1992 is now available exclusively at The Commodore Billbard. It's a whopping total of 44 MegaBytes.
It's a big commercial split into 4 parts. It was included on the VHS edition of "The Lawnmower Man" back in 1992. At the beginning of the tape, you'd find the usual movie-trailers. In between the trailers, you would see these commercials for the A600 and the CDTV. If you watched all 4 commercials, you would be able to answer 3 questions and get the chance to win one of three different Amiga packs.
You'll find audio-previews of the commercials too, for you to listen to before you download the big files.
The clips can be found in: Commercials -> Amiga Commercials.
Virus Help Denmark
Virus Help Denmark: VirusZ III Version 0.96
Well, this is the best news in 2002 (so far).. Georg Hoermann has started to update VirusZ III, and a new full update is now available for download at our homepage.
Here is some info about the update:
Name: VirusZ III v0.96
Archive name : Vz3_096.lha
Archive size: 35.575 Bytes
Date: 27 January 2002
Programmer: Georg Hörmann
Requires: OS 2.04+, xvs.library
Neu in VirusZ III v0.96:
  • Once again written by Georg Hörmann, as Dirk Stöcker doesn't have any time. No longer beta version, because all features are working well, missing ones are no reason for a beta release.
  • Fixed bug in vector check that appeared with xvs.library 33.37. No longer uses private stuff from inside the library.
  • Fixed bug in vector check startup code invented by Dirk's updates. No longer uses uninitialized gadget pointers.
  • Added 'Show...' function for 'Data Viruses' from xvs.library.
  • Rearranged 'File Check Preferences' back to just one window after Dirk replaced the old archive stuff with XAD.
  • Added missing 'ROM Update' memlist entries to the brain. But: There still exists one entry that cannot be added because of missing static data.
  • Added recognition for MuForce and MuGuardianAngel patches.
Amiga Arena: Interview with Richard Smedley (UltraAccounts)
Amiga Arena - Interview
Richard Smedley, developer of the homebanking software UltraAccounts, just released an update that enables the usage of the Euro with UltraAccounts. UltraAccounts is shareware, the first version was available 9 years ago. The English version of the interview is available here.
Olaf Köbnik: "This interview once again turns out how much important feedback is for the developers. Whether or not development of "UltraAccounts" will be continued in the future depends on if there are users interested in this. It would be more than a pitty, if another developer would stop development due to lack of feedback!"
Note of own concern:
Dear Amiga friends! "Amiga Arena" might stop its service in the foreseeable future. The first measures will not be taken before easter.
Game: Graphic designers wanted for Ermentrud
The website of the game Ermentrud has been updated . It now shows first images of the adventures as they appear in the game. At the same time it becomes obvious that the game is in the process of being developed since the Inga engine has finally reached the beta version 1.0 (not yet published).
Ermentrud requires a lot of graphic design and some graphic designers are still needed for the background images.
These images are supposed to be scanned pencil drawings which are coloured in by the computer. The following skills are required:
  • Being able to draw very well, according to the style of the example image.
  • Opportunity to scan (with good quality).
  • Not necessary but desirable: being able to colour in images, according to the style of the second example image.
The payment is based on profit share after the game has been published. Unfortunately Inutilis can't afford a pre-payment since the whole project is more or less a spare time activity.
Please mail your applications including drawings to Timo@inutilis.de. (sd) (Translation: sr)
Virus Help Denmark: WatchDog 2.5
On 25 January 2002 Zbigniew Trzcionkowski released with version 2.5 the latest snapshot of his memory surveillance tool 'Watchdog'. In this version further tests have been added amongst other things. Compared to version 2.1 the following details have changed:
  • added ToolType 'IgnoreSnoopDos' - currently this is the only patcher I have decided to include since in future I want to use heuristics to analyse ANY patches...
  • added 'WatchDog' position in WB/Tools menu. After watching this requester memory test is performed too...
  • added new memory installation and new timing routines... a. read: memory deprotection of WatchDog together with xvs should be more difficult for virus now... b. time between memory checks is adjusted using AI features and varies somewhere between 5 and 10 seconds (depending on system and user activity)... c. fixed little bit my unfreezing toy...
  • added few more vital Exec vectors to memcheck...
  • added checker for some important dos vectors (with $4ef9 opcode generic restorer)
  • added some debug tooltypes - no need to mention them here...
  • added S:startup-sequence and S:user-startup notification so that any change (or deletion) of these important files is reported to the user. If You don't know what that notification is You'd better believe me that it slows no machine and causes no accesses to the watched files...
  • added ToolType 'NoNotify' to switch off ability mentioned above :)
The tool uses the xvs.library in order to check every three seconds if the memory contains any known virus. All further features of the program are explained in the documentation.
Watchdog runs from AmigaOS 2.04 and needs the xvs.library.
AROS: latest snapshots
With regard to AROS the latest snapshots of the sources and binaries were published on Sourceforge. AROS is an open source project for the implementation of a portable OS which is compatible with AmigaOS 3.1.
Release Name: 20020126
The following files are available:
  • AROS-20020126-source.tar.gz
    The main AROS sources.
  • AROS-20020126-contrib-source.tar.gz
    contrib sources.
  • AROS-20020126-i386-linux.tar.gz
    The hosted version for Linux/i386. This is the most complete and mature port, which means that you can run almost all included programs and demos with it. This archive contains all AROS and contrib binaries compiled from the CVS tree.
  • AROS-20020126-i386-freebsd.tar.gz
    The hosted version for FreeBSD/i386. This is a fairly new port for which binary snapshots haven't been available until now, so it might not be as mature as the Linux/i386 port. For example, this archive does not contain contrib binaries.
  • AROS-20020126-i386-pc.tar.gz
    The native version for i386-based PC AT computers and compatibles. It works quite well, but the driver support is very limited at the moment. This archive contains all AROS and contrib binaries compiled from the CVS tree, but not boot floppy or cdrom images which are available separately.
  • AROS-20020126-i386-pc-floppies.tar.gz
    The native version for i386-based PC AT computers and compatibles. This archive contains the boot and contrib disk floppies which you can quickly write to a disk and boot AROS with.
  • AROS-20020126-i386-pc-cdrom.iso.gz
    The native version for i386-based PC AT computers and compatibles. This is the bootable CDROM ISO image, which contains all programs in AROS-20020126-i386-pc.tar.gz.
    The image is a bit experimental, which means that eg. the Startup-Sequence hasn't been adapted properly yet (although you can boot into AROS). Also, this version WILL NOT work with computers that have more than one CD-ROM drive.
Incompatible Euro keymaps and fonts
For the attention of everybody who produces fonts and keymaps:
Because of the introduction of the Euro some people have unfortunately got on the wrong track. The Amiga uses the Latin-8858-1 code table that allocates the Euro sign to the ASCII code 164.
This allocation is binding. All the keymaps and texts which have recently been checked in Aminet showed faults. Often the sign is allocated to code 128 as it is common in the PC world. This might be based on the assumption that a text transfer is easier in this way. Unfortunately this is not the case because special signs specific to a country must be converted anyway. Therefore it's up to the manufacturers of the conversion programs to implement the Euro sign.
This false code leads to the unwanted effect that texts on other Amiga systems cannot be read correctly and that the Amiga becomes incompatible to itself. Besides such a text is not convertible automatically.
Moreover the key combination "Alt E" should be agreed on. The symbol (@) is on the bottom right hand side of the keyboard and it is activated by pressing the "Alt" key. If you have a Win keyboard, which are the only Amiga keyboards with the Euro sign, the Euro sign is also on the bottom right hand side of the keyboard. The combination "Alt E" seems to be more logical than "Alt Shift E".
Creating texts with the Euro sign in both code positions is not desirable due to the loss of a sign on the one hand and due to the loss of transparency on the other hand since the user will not know if the used sign is really compatible.
Here are some correct programs, texts and keymaps from Aminet:
EuroHack.lha: Patches the Euro sign in the topaz 8 font on 164!
EuroConv.lha: Converts the Euro sign from the PC on the Amiga.
According to the author the font set EuroFonts.lha has already been changed to 164 although the wrong Euro is still implemented. The new archive with approximately 900 Kb is supposed to be released over the next few days. The small archive (300 Kb) isn't compatible.
Last but not least try the test which checks the compatibility of the created Euro sign:
Open a shell and enter the following lines. "EEEE" stands for one or more Euro signs.
Echo "EEEE" to t:Test
type t:test hex
As a result the value "A4" should appear for each of the Euro signs! The value "0A" should be ignored.
0000: A4A4A4A4 0A
If another value other than "A4" comes up, the keymap is incompatible.
Graphic fractale: FlashMandelWOS Version 1.6
Version 1.6 of FlashMandelWOS has been uploaded on Aminet in gfx/fract directory. With FlashMandel you can explore fractal space and create your own pictures.
These are the main features:
Full functional program for rendering Mandelbrot & Julia fractals with different exponents. Support for ECS/AGA/RTG and 68020+/PPC with an FPU Amiga or compatible systems. Uses new Reaction GUI, Localization, and has an Installer script also to easy update or uninstall the program. C & Asm 68k/PPC sources included! It's really fast even on old Amigas and should be also compatible with all new Amiga clones and it's free.
This has changed in the new version:
  • Extended the Z = Z² + C formula to Z = Z^(2^n) + C with 1 <= n <= 11.
  • Added the new ToolType POWER default to 1 for the classic Mandelbrot & Julia formulas.
  • Fixed some little Reaction default pubscreen mistakes.
  • Default coords are now (-2,+1.125i) and (+1,-1.125i).
  • Splitted the archive into 2 parts one for pictures pix/fract/FlashMandelPic.lha and other for program to reduce the size of the archive.
  • Some minor internal changes and improvements.
  • Recompiled and linked with new AmigaOS 3.9 developer archive includes and libs.
  • Updated the docs and installer to reflect new changes.
  • and much more...
In next version is planned an AREXX port to control the program in auto mode to build anim movies and a special benchmark mode to evaluate the CPU/FPU/MEM speed of 'OLD' real Amigas 68K/PPC VS 'NEW' software clones (UAE & company), stay tuned. (ps)
Amiga Inc.: Executive Update
Bill McEwen discusses the status of a new Set-top Box partner for the Amiga DE.
Greetings one and all:
I have been receiving many e-mails reminding me of the need to announce the STB OEM partner. We are well aware that it was scheduled for last week and we were expecting the legal department of the partner to have released the press release. Unfortunately, when you are dealing with multi-billion dollar companies, it can more often than not take longer than planned.
We did receive the OK to announce to our developers and this was accomplished last week. So all of the NDA developers do know about the deal and the details of the singed OEM deal, however we are going to have to wait a little while longer for the rest of the Amiga community to see the public release.
I am sorry, but it will be worth the wait. In fact we will probably have a couple more that we can announce at the same time.
So the NDA developers were notified last week, and we should have the public announcement out by next week.
Bill McEwen
Financial software: Bugfix for Bonds V1.85
There is a first bugfix for Bonds v1.85 on the homepage (title link). It replaces the old exe file with a new one.
Fixed:
  • Umlauts now correct.
  • Crash in the depot stock window, if stock = 0.
  • Changing fonts caused crash.
  • Some more little things.
Still not fixed is the problem with the object data list which may occur if thre are two objects with the same first words (e.g. "SAP VZ" and "SAP ST").
Sven Dröge advices everybody who has MagicMenu installed to enable NON-BLOCKING in its options. Otherwise it may come that the menu choice could be overlooked.
Furthermore configuration files from elder versions of Bonds should not be used, since in part internet regarding settings had to be adjusted. In any case settings should be compared to the included configuration.
Bonds is a shareware financial software to maintain security papers of any kind. But the main focus is on shares. This software was especially designed for the German financial market place and handles best security papers dealt in Germany, since it uses the numbering system for security papers of the German stock-market. e.p.i.c.: News about Feeble Files for Amiga 68k and PPC
The Feeble Files is currently in the final stages of betatesting for both 68k and PPC Amigas. We expect the game to be finished and go into production within the next week or so, which means the game should be shipping by early/mid february 2002. The Feeble Files will require an Amiga equipped with minimum a 68060, a 4 MByte GFX board and 32 MByte RAM but a PPC equipped Amiga is recommended.
Some users of the PPC version of EARTH 2140 MISSIONPACK:THE FINAL CONFLICT experienced problems with the game. The new update provided by Pagan Games is available from the download section of our website now and should eliminate these problems. However, if you did NOT experience any problems with THE FINAL CONFLICT please do NOT install this update. (ps)
Hyperion: Presse Release Amiga OS 4.0 development update
Amiga OS 4.0 development update
Leuven, Belgium, January 21, 2002.
Let me start off by wishing everybody in the Amiga community all the best in 2002!
As you know, on November 1, 2001 Hyperion Entertainment entered into a license agreement with Amiga Inc. to produce Amiga OS 4.0 for PPC based systems.
Since my presentation in Cologne at the Amiga 2001 show on November 17-18, very substantial progress was made which I am now ready to share with you.
Some of you have expressed some misgivings about the lack of progress reports on OS 4.0 development but I hope I can count on your understanding as all of us have been extremely busy, even through the holiday season, to bring you what is unquestionably the most ambitious OS upgrade since Amiga OS 3.0.
Now I know that many of you are sceptical because of the scope of the project and because similar promises were made in the past.
To those people I would like to point out that Hyperion Entertainment does not enter into contracts lightly and that we have a track-record carrying out commercial development and contract-work for Windows, Mac, Linux, Amiga and Amiga DE/Elate.
We have brought together a truly impressive development team of some 25 people building on the OS 3.5 and 3.9 development team whilst adding several well-known and respected Amiga developers to the mix.
I'm very pleased to say that Dave Haynie has agreed to serve as a technical consultant.
You'll be hard-pressed to find a more experienced team for the job!
The feature-set of OS 4.0 has now been finalised to a large extent.
We can't guarantee that every single feature listed here will make it in the initial release of OS 4.0 but this is the feature-set that we have contractually committed to delivering.
You will also note that for the first time in many, many years very substantial work is being done on Intuition, one of the core elements of the Amiga OS. Having a PPC native version of Intuition available will make a very noticeable difference speed-wise.
We intend for OS 4.0 to be disk-based or at least partly disk-based and partly flashrom based even for current Amiga's. More about that in a later update.
We also intend for OS 4.0 to be installed effortlessly from CD and from scratch without the need for an existing OS install.
As we have taken on more work (Intuition etc.) and folded some of the functionality originally planned for OS 4.2 into OS 4.0, this inevitably means the original February release-date might slip somewhat but all in all we believe that the end-result will be technologically more satisfying.
Come end of January, I hope to have the biggest chunk of the legal work for OS 4.0 behind me which will allow me to provide you with more regular updates.
I know full well that your patience has been sorely tested over the last years so I understand your impatience and even your scepticism but I can assure you that the Amiga OS is in good hands and that we will deliver.
In closing, I would like to invite everybody out there who (out of an understandable frustration with the neglect of the Amiga OS by its respective past owners) decided to take matters in his own hands, to work with us, rather than against us.
Ben Hermans, LL.M
Managing partner Hyperion Entertainment VOF
Amiga OS 4.0 provisional feature list
Exec Second Generation (Exec SG)
Exec is the kernel of the AmigaOS and is currently written in 68K assembly.
Exec is being re-written in C and new functionality will be introduced to allow the deployment of OS 4.x on any suitable PPC hardware.
The following features are planned:
  • Hardware abstraction layer
  • Virtual memory
  • New library interface
  • Resource tracking and management
  • Optional memory protection
  • WarpOS backwards compatibility
68K "Just in Time" emulation
PPC native TCP/IP stack
  • implemented as a single shared library
  • compatible with the Amiga standard "bsdsocket" API, as defined by the AmiTCP product
  • enhanced API for more control over the inner workings and configuration
  • built-in DHCP client (e.g. for cable modems)
  • Internet Superserver (inetd)
  • IP filtering and networking address translation
  • drivers for asynchronous PPP (dial-up networking) and PPP over Ethernet (for ADSL and cable modems)
  • AmiSSL V2.0
PPC native filesystem (FFS2)
FFS2 is a fully backwards compatible re-implementation in C of the Fast File System. It supports media > 4 GByte, and a new variant of the file/directory name storage format which allows for long file names (up to 108 characters).
Recovery and Salvage tools
Comprehensive suite of salvage and recovery tools including Salvage, Undelete, Unformat, Repair, RDBSalv, ReOrg/Defrag, Check Integrity etc.
PPC native RTG system
The PPC native RTG system (based on Picasso 96 V3) allows for the use of modern graphics cards on the Amiga.
Drivers for all current Zorro II/III cards as well as drivers for the Permedia 2/3, Voodoo 3, Matrox G450/G550 and ATI Radeon are planned.
An arithmetically optimised PPC native version of layers.library is also planned.
Warp3D
New version of Warp3D, the powerful yet low-level 3D API which is both available on the classic Amiga and intent/Amiga DE and which allows developers to rapidly migrate 3D content between both platforms.
Drivers for Permedia 2/3, Voodoo 3, Matrox G450/G550 and ATI Radeon are planned.
OpenGL 1.3 support (Mesa 4.0)
OpenGL is a cross-platform (Mac, Linux, Windows, AmigaDE etc.) high-level 3D API originally developed by Silicon Graphics.
Support for OpenGL 1.3 will be provided by porting the open source project Mesa (which now passes all SGI compliance tests) which will sit on top of Warp3D so that graphics-card functionality not currently offered by the OpenGL API may be supported nonetheless.
PPC native RTA system (AHI)
A Retargetable Audio System allows the use of plug-in sound cards (PCI or Zorro II).
AHI by Martin Blom is currently the de facto standard on the Amiga and a PPC native version will be offered with support for a wide variety of sound cards including but not limited to all current Amiga sound cards and the Soundblaster 128 and Live (EMU10K1) cards.
PPC native Intuition and Reaction
Reaction is the BOOPSI based GUI system for the Amiga, introduced in OS 3.5 and extended in OS 3.9.
Moreover a new preferences system will allow the user to change more aspects of the GUI.
Other features:
  • Drag and Drop support
  • New "ghosted" look
Intuition will sport the following new features (more planned):
  • New DrawInfo pens
  • Enhanced window borders
  • Resolution-adaptive system gadgets
  • User-selectable styles for system glyphs and 3D frames with support for external plug-ins
  • Configurable look for proportional gadgets
  • New-style (3D recessed) "disabled" look for gadgets where applicable
  • Gad-Tools enhancements (pop-up capability for cycle gadgets etc.)
  • Full-user control of Workbench palette
SCSI drivers for SCRIPTS based SCSI controllers
WarpInput API (working title)
WarpInput is an API for multimedia controller devices (akin to DirectInput on Windows) which allows a programmer to provide support through one API for a wide variety of input-devices such as keyboard, mouse, joysticks (analog and digital), track-ball, Playstation controller etc.
Minimal USB stack
PPC native datatypes
New HDToolbox replacement
Support for TrueType/OpenType fonts
BusinessWeek: Apple Special
There is a new article about Apple at the BusinessWeek-homepage. A subpage of this article is dealing with GUI and easier computers.
»Instead of starting out with hardware and software as the first design step, I said what we are going to need if we want to reach millions of people is to start with the question of what do people do with a computer, and how do they do it. What is the interface like? And then design the hardware and software to support that. This is why the Macintosh was unlike any commercial product that came before it.
