Amiga history: Will the real Joe Pillow please stand up
Almost every Amiga fan will be familiar with "Joe Pillow", be it as a nickname for Dale Luck or with regard to the story that the developers of the Amiga transported a prototype of the computer on an airplane in its own seat due to its sensitivity, which was booked under that name.

Now Dale Luck describes at the title link what Joe Pillow was really all about. In February 1984, on a flight from New Orleans to San Jose, he and RJ Mical had simply kept a seat free for more freedom of movement by creating an additional passenger from his backpack and jacket and a pillow with a face painted on it. Cameron Armstrong has developed a chat program called AmigaGPT, which is based on ChatGPT. The software supports the latest OpenAI models including the o1 family and runs on AmigaOS 3.1 and above (including 4.1) and on MorphOS. The source code of the tool can be downloaded separately.

The new version 2.6.0 has now been released with the following changes:
  • Added GPT Image 1 image model
  • Added GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano chat models
  • Retrieves image data directly from OpenAI instead of downloading from file server to speed up image retrieval
  • Error messages can now be displayed in a requester if MUI is not finished initialising the app
  • Now displays an informative error message if you are attempting to generate an image when you have insufficient credits in your OpenAI API account
  • M68k version compiled with extra optimisations for faster code
  • Fixed bug where AmigaGPT would get stuck after sending multiple chat messages
  • Fixed the bsdsocket.library error that appears on MorphOS if the app is closed before it has finished loading
  • Fix crash when toggling speech enabled in menu
  • Fix crash when generating an image when OpenAI reports an error

Mouse-controlled zombie shooter: "BDTZ" released
After two demo versions (amiga-news.de reported), the full version of BDTZ ("Better Dead Than Zed", video) has now been released: a mouse-controlled shooter in which the character has to be controlled from a bird's eye view through a zombie-infested maze of streets. Ammunition is scarce and shots attract more zombies.

The final version features a new intro, improved graphics, introduced female zombie figure, new sound effects, 4 different game locations each with its own set of graphics, gangs of thugs ready to kill you, minefields, military bases, an Easter egg and new mission objectives.
The game requires 1 MB Ram, an Amiga 1200 is recommended for playing. (dr)

SCALA-MM game conversion: The Angel of Death 1.0
At the end of November, 'Quantum Code Monk' released a first pre-release version of its Scala MM game conversion "The Angel of Death" for AmiGameJam 2024, which is based on Police Quest: In Pursuit Of The Death Angel, a game released by Sierra in 1987. As Jessie Bains, you try to take control of the drug trade in the town of Lytton.

The graphics have been reworked and are heavily inspired by the original game. A few side quests, a points management system and a very simple luck mini-game have also been added.

AmigaOS 3.x as well as Scala or the Scala Player are required. Also 4 MB RAM and a minimum resolution of 640x512. (dr)

Emulator: Mame106Minimix 1.3
The Multi Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME) emulates numerous arcade machines. After conversions for MorphOS and AmigaOS 4 as well as various, mostly older 68k ports, there has been another project for AmigaOS 3.1 since last year with Mame106Minimix, which however requires a very fast computer (68060 processor with 64 MB or actually designed for PiStorm extensions).

The port of MAME version 0.106, which dates back to 2006, is now available in version 1.3 and offers further corrections regarding the AGA and OCS native modes and the emulation of various games. (snx)

Background and Mission

The Mirari board is designed with the intention to provide the Amiga community with low-cost PowerPC hardware. Therefore, the design is based on a bare minimum with nice-to-haves based on what makes sense, but always with the mission in mind. Due to the minor cost difference between a dual-core T1022 and the quad-core T1042, we've decided on the T1042, resulting in a low-cost board with mid-range specifications.

The T10x2 is based on the e5500 core, the same core found in the X5000. Initial benchmarks confirm that the single-core performance difference is just the clock difference, with a 1.4 GHz T1042 performing at 70% of the 2GHz X5020. The design also accommodates the pin and footprint-compatible T2081, allowing for a mid-cost board with high-end specifications. To ensure compatibility, we had to make some compromises to the T10x2 design.

Memory Support

The T10x2 memory controller supports both 64-bit DDR3L and DDR4 at 800 MHz (DDR1600). The T2081 memory controller supports both 64-bit DDR3L at 933MHz (DDR1866) and DDR3 at 1066MHz (DDR2133). The common denominator is DDR3L, hence the choice for a 1.35V SODIMM slot.

If we had focused solely on the T1042, DDR4 would have been the better choice from an availability standpoint. However, since the clock speed is the same but latencies are larger for DDR4, the overall memory performance would have been lower.

For the T2081 we can increase the memory controller voltage to 1.5V which would enable the DDR2133 interface speed.

Although we have only one memory controller, initial Linux benchmarks show that the single and SMT memory performance is at least on par with the X5020.

Audio

For longevity reasons, we've decided to use an industrial-grade audio codec from TI (TLV320AIC3204). This codec is routed to three audio jacks at the rear (mic, line-in, line-out) and to an onboard HD audio connector. Additionally, there's a digital optical output (Toslink). The T1042 features an I2S interface for direct connection to external audio codecs, while the T208x does not. Therefore, we've implemented the I2S and S/PDIF controllers in the FPGA. This means there's no audio driver readily available for Linux. For OS4 and MorphOS, I have experience writing AHI drivers, so consider this covered.

Storage

The mainboard features two SATA ports and two NVMe slots. However, we had to make some tough choices again:

For the T1042 variant, there's always one SATA port and one NVMe slot available. The second SATA/NVMe is mutually exclusive, currently jumper-based but eventually u-boot configurable.

The T2081 does not have SATA interfaces. If you need SATA, it must be added with a PCIe card. However, keep in mind that SATA is being phased out, with modern PCs and laptops often using NVMe over SATA SSDs.

Tested Linux distributions are all booting and running from NVMe. I also have experience with NVMe drivers, so consider this covered for OS4 and MorphOS as well.

USB3: We based u-boot on the latest stable version available earlier this year, 2024.10. This has many benefits over using the 2014-2018 versions available in other PowerPC hardware. However, the developers behind u-boot changed the driver model around 2018, with a transition period ending in 2020. This means u-boot is a mixture of old drivers and drivers compliant with the new model. For USB on NXP SoC, there's a catch: NXP didn't rewrite their OHCI and EHCI drivers for the new model. Activating the XHCI driver for USB3 support causes conflicts. Fortunately, this is not an issue under Linux, so USB3 works correctly, but we have work to do for u-boot.

Prototypes

We have ordered 5 prototypes and managed to make them all work (100% yield). This was a great concern to me personally, as the layout requirements for the 780 balls FPGA stretched our supplier's capabilities to its limits. The boards run stably and have undergone hours of burn-in testing with Linux stress testing tools. One observation is that the CPUs run around 30°C idle and around 40°C under full load, which is good for overclocking potential. The core power supply has quite some headroom to support this. You can check out the Hyperion Entertainment X5000 Linux-only forum for posts from Skateman. Whenever he talks about his 4-core e5500, he is actually talking about this board.

Update: (30.04.2025, 23:20, cg)

The hardware designer made some additional statements in a Discord channel only accessible to registered users (Official Commodore Amiga, #next-gen):
  • "Board is fully functional. So runs all available PPC Linux distro's (including the latest Chimera). This one is T1042 based for cost reasons. So 4x e5500 cores. But the board is fully compatible with the 8 threaded e6500 based T2081. Other things to highlight are 2x NVMe (Linux boots and runs from NVMe) and USB3.2 Gen1".
  • "Target for the T1042 based version is to be the lowest cost mainboard PPC board on sale."
  • "Target is to run both OS4 and MorphOS. But this is not up to us of course. We can do so much what we can control. And that is the hardware including u-boot. If those in control of OS4 ultimately do not want to cooperate than at least we had the fun. And proved that low cost PPC hardware is possible."
  • "The T1042 supports either 1.35V DDR3L or DDR4. The T2081 supports either 1.5V DDR3 or 1.35V DDR3L. Hence the choice for a 1.35V sodimm. For the T2081 I could opt for 1.5V DDR3. Then it can be clocked up to DDR-2133"
Update 2: (01.05.2025, 13:15, cg):

Board designer Harald 'Geennaam' Kanning has posted an extensive description of the project in our comments section.

Update 3: (01.05.2025, 15:39, cg):

Restructured the entire news item, to present all information available so far in an easier to digest format. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Worth a read: Thomas Rattigan, short-lived Commodore CEO
American journalist and author David L. Farquhar regularly writes about computer and IT history on his website "The Silicon Underground". In a recent article, he outlines the short but eventful tenure of Thomas Rattigan as CEO of Commodore. Rattigan was lured away from Pepsi to Commodore in 1985 and initially took on the role of COO. He is credited with initiating the successful A500 and A2000 models and returning the company to profitability.

On 23 April 1987, just over a year after being appointed CEO of Commodore (on 1 April 1986), Thomas Rattigan had his abrupt end at Commodore – he was dismissed by Irving Gould and escorted out of the building by security guards without being given the opportunity to take any personal belongings with him.

Farquhar recounts the background to this spectacular episode in Commodore's company history and shows how Rattigan ended up having the last laugh. (nba)

Games That Weren't

Amiga Games That Weren't: Alien Olympics
Alien Olympics was a sports game planned by Mindscape for 1994 for the Amiga (OCS, 1 MB) and the CD32. Although it was never released, the website "Games That Weren't" has now discovered an early version of the game that is about 30% complete and made it runnable. The game, which was converted to Amiga by Mark Greenshields, is reminiscent of Track & Field, but with eight unique alien characters and humorous disciplines. (nba)

Chat software: AmigaGPT 2.5.0
Cameron Armstrong has developed a chat program called AmigaGPT, which is based on ChatGPT. The software supports the latest OpenAI models including the o1 family and runs on AmigaOS 3.1 and above (including 4.1) and on MorphOS. The source code of the tool can be downloaded separately.

The new version 2.5.0 has now been released with the following changes:
  • Added an ARexx menu to allow you to run your own scripts. ARexx is not yet implemented in MorphOS so you can try installing the 68k version of ARexx and see if that works.
  • Added sample scripts
  • Status bar background colour adjusted to improve readability
  • Latest OpenAI chat models added (gpt-4.1, o3, o4-mini)

Turn-based strategy game: New demo version 04/25 of "Ecliptic"
Ecliptic is described by the author as "a mixture of turn based tactical combat and role playing" (amiga-news.de reported) being a visually reminiscent of the retro-futuristic science fiction of the 1970s and 1980s. Now a sixth demo has been released for the game.

As the developer reports in his developer diary, this is "a pretty big update to Ecliptic - it includes a whole new level."

According to the developer, the game will not run on a simple A500 with 512K chip/512K slow RAM. It is his intention that this is possible, but it is not a high priority as the game already requires a harddrive. An Amiga 1200 with HD is recommended. (dr)

Artur Gadawski (Mail)

7-bit: Bluetooth adapter for control pads
7-Bit has created a Bluetooth adapter called Ryś BlueLink, with which wireless control pads from Microsoft (X Box One), Sony (PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3) and Nintendo (Joy-Con) can be used with an Amiga 500 or Amiga 1200. Ryś BlueLink has an OLED display that allows the user to configure the device and update the firmware via WiFi.

As the developer Artur Gadawski tells us, users had specifically asked for an interface that supports wireless XBox and Playstation pads and is specially tailored to the Amiga. He uses the licensed BTstack from BlueKitchen for this. The biggest challenge was to keep the device compact and the energy consumption as low as possible.

It is currently only available from the Polish allegro for the equivalent of around 60 euros (plus shipping). (dr)

Tool: Audio decompression with QoaToAiff 0.2
The relatively new "Quite OK Audio Format" (QOA) is a lossy audio compression format: audio signals (44100hz, stereo) are encoded at 278 kbits/s, exactly 1/5 of the bits required for an uncompressed WAV file (amiga-news.de reported).

Grzegorz Kraszewski has written a decoder that converts QOA files into uncompressed AIFF (source code on GitHub). In version 0.2, he has implemented output buffering and the hard disc operations are now faster. (dr)

First stable version of a native 64-bit AROS
Krzysztof 'deadwood' Śmiechowicz has released the first version of AROS for x86-64, labelled "stable". The basic system is available in two versions: as a bootable ISO file or in a 'hosted' edition that runs under Linux. Virtual machines (VMware, Virtualbox or QEMU) are recommended as a test environment for this first release: Audio, video and network drivers have been improved and tested for this use case.

In the coming months, a 64-bit version of the Odyssey Web Browser with a significantly more up-to-date version of the WebKit engine is to be released, and the 'latest Amiga emulation cores' are also to be equipped with a 64-bit JIT and better integrated into the system. AROS distributions based on the now published base system are also already in development.

A corresponding thread has been opened on arosworld.org for discussions about this 64-bit version of AROS. (cg)

Balaton (Mail)

Emulation: QEMU 10.0 / bboot 0.8
QEMU is an open-source computer emulator and virtualizer. The emulation of complete computers also makes it possible to run operating systems such as AmigaOS 4 or MorphOS under QEMU that are tailored to a quite specific hardware platform. This support is provided by QEMU developer Zoltan Balaton, who clearly summarises the possibilities on a specially created and now redesigned website.

QEMU is now available in version 10.0.0, Windows installers are provided as usual by Stefan Weil.

Version 0.8 of the bootloader "bboot" for loading AmigaOS 4 on QEMU-emulated AmigaOne and Pegasos2 machines, which was released by Zoltan Balaton about a month ago, requires the options -kernel, -initrd and -append for the amigaone machine, which are now available in QEMU 10.0. This makes it easier to use and is similar to pegasos2. Older bboot versions still require the -device loader options and will not work with -kernel on amigaone. Since the amigaone emulation might have less problems than pegasos2 (and is still available), according to Zoltan Balaton this might be a better choice now.

Finally, the developer has created a new subpage on VFIO device drivers under Linux: VFIO is a device driver that is used to assign virtual machines to devices and thus enable full access to a specific GPU, for example.
As he adds to us, the use of a GPU with VFIO on qemu-system-ppc is currently still experimental and would take some effort to set up. However, some users have managed to achieve usable results: it is therefore possible in principle, even if it is not easy to implement. (dr)

Worth a read: Why computers were more fun before
In his latest article, "Honest and Elitist Thoughts on Why Computers Were More Fun Before", published on Datagubbe.se, Swedish tech nerd and software developer Carl Svensson reflects on the development of computer use and argues that computers were more fun before they became accessible to everyone. He argues that the complexity of the technology at the time and the need to engage intensively with it fostered a deeper connection and greater understanding of the devices.

The article highlights how the simplification and commercialisation of technology have led to many users today having only superficial knowledge and losing their former enthusiasm for discovering and understanding technology.

A worthwhile read for anyone interested in the history of computer use and cultural changes in the digital world. (nba)

Announcement and pre-order campaign: AmiGUS sound card
After 1 year of development time, we are proud to announce a new and exciting piece of hardware for the Amiga in 2025: the AmiGUS soundcard.

AmiGUS

Oliver Achten is responsible for the hardware development of the card. He developed the card with passion and attention to detail and also perfected the drivers in collaboration with his software team. Alinea Computer will be responsible for the production and support of the card.

GUS stands for "Great Unbelievable Sound", and that is exactly what we will be offering - a quantum leap in quality for Amiga sound cards.

No less than 24-bit, 192kHz is the premise here, and the good news is that this quality can be achieved on any Amiga, thanks to a fully featured hardware synth and mixing engine and CODEC chip for compressed sound formats.

Our goal is to bring high quality music production and reproduction back to the Amiga, making it an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Aiostreams V1.7.8: Scripts for streaming videos (AmigaOS 4, MorphOS)
"All In One streams" (aiostreams) is a pack of scripts, written in Python, that can be used to stream and watch videos from different online networks, like Twitch.tv, YouTube and Vimeo.com. All the scripts are developed and fully tested under AmigaOS 4.1 FE and MorphOS 3.x. which are the target systems of George 'walkero' Sokiano's project. Changes of version 1.7.8:

Changed
  • Changed the youtube script to support urls like https://youtu.be/AbcdefghiJk
  • Changed the youtube script to return an error message when the url is not compatible
Fixed
  • Fixed the version string removing the double "vv"
  • Fixed the youtube script when searching for videos to not crash when the results do not have a videoid
As a companion to these scripts, he created the website AIOstreams which can be a fast way to discover Twitch videos. It is really fast and can be used on older browsers that do not support Javascript and CSS. This is a proxy website. No data is stored in any database, there is no tracking and no authentication is required. (dr)

Shoot'em Up: Demo version of "Wings of Fear"
Around a week ago, we reported on the preview video for the shoot'em up "Wings of Fear". Now the developer has released a demo version of his game, which is still in the alpha phase and is being created using the Scorpion Engine. He wants to use it to gather constructive feedback and suggestions on how he can improve his game.

The minimum requirements are an ECS Amiga with 1 MB Fast RAM, 1 MB Chip RAM and a 68000 CPU, with which the game runs "painfully slowly" according to the author. AGA, 2MB chip RAM and 1 MB fast RAM as well as a 68020 CPU are recommended. (dr)

Warcraft-2-Engine: Stratagus 3.3.3 for AmigaOS 4
Press release: Alinea Computer is pleased to be able to offer another port by Steffen Häuser. Steffen has taken care of the porting of the latest version 3.3.3 and the installation routines for easy installation under AmigaOS 4. Stratagus is the port of the engine in version 3.3.3, which makes it possible to play the game Warcraft 2 from Blizzard Entertainment natively on the Amiga under AmigaOS 4.

The archive contains an installer with which it is possible to install the game directly from the PC CD without pre-installing it on the PC. At least for the Warcraft 2 Classic PC CD, for the Battle.Net CD or the Gog version it is necessary to unpack a file with a Windows tool, but with the Classic CD you can install directly on the Amiga.

Warcraft 2 is one of the most famous strategy games of all time, practically the prequel to the famous MMO "World of Warcraft". In addition to the base game "Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness", the add-on CD "Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal" (already included in the Battle.Net CD and Gog version) is also supported.

Stratagus is based on the current "latest Git" version of the Stratagus project (version 3.3.3). In contrast to an earlier implementation, 3.3.3 offers the following features:
  • Iconic game music and not just sound effects (the music files are only installed with the Warcraft 2 Classic CD and the Battle.net CD, but can be copied manually afterwards when using the Gog version).
  • The game's video sequences (video sequences not available on AmigaOne A1222)
  • A functional level editor
  • Numerous bug fixes
Of course, the localisation of Warcraft 2 into different languages is also supported.

Stratagus is under GPL licence, the source code of the Amiga version will be integrated into the github of the PC version in the foreseeable future, but is also available as a request by e-mail (see readme for details).

The minimum requirements for Stratagus are:
  • A computer with AmigaOS 4.1 FE Update 2 or higher
  • Special executables optimised for the respective platforms (x1000, x5000, Sam 440, Sam 460, G3 and A1222) can be selected during installation.
Note: This version only offers the single-player campaigns, without multiplayer. (cg)
