Encyclopedia mentiones the Amiga
The "Multimedia-Encyclopedia 2002", which can be purchased at Aldi (German discounter), is reading about the Amiga:

»Amiga
Home computer developed in the 80th by the company Amiga, then distributed by Commodore with Motorola processors. Popular home computers of the Amiga line are the models Amiga 500 and Amiga 1000. More efficient versions of the Amiga also could be utilized for more challenging projects (Amiga 2000 and Amiga 4000).

Amiga was taken over by the German trade chain Escom, then by the US company Viscorp, and finally by the company Amino, but though several announcements were made no new Amiga products were launched, so far.« (ps) (Translation: mj)

AGC failed
Unfortunately there has not been much interest in my attempt to found the AGC (Amiga Guide Community). I intended to create a common basis for all those who like to work with the AmigaGuideFormat. I was also going to create a website which should have contained all publications of the AmigaGuideFormat that have been ever written.

Some of the active AmigaGuide writer answered very pleased but nobody could help me realizing the project so I stopped it in summer 2001.

Up to now I did not have the time to publish this sad message. Sad because the AmigaGuideFormat is underestimated of most of the Amiga users although it is used very often. However, maybe there is somebody who is interested in. I still have not thrown away my notices of this project. (ps) (Translation: dr)

Text viewer: EvenMore Updates
New updates in the EvenMore archive. Now when you search for text using the search files function, you can double click a file in the list to open it at the place where your match was found (Only for plain text files though). Fixed a bug in the new colour setup, EvenMore would sometimes loose other colours when getting new ones. You will need to reconfigure your EvenMore config file. Also fixed an enforcer hit when closing the window, was freeing the gadgets twice ;/.

Alfred Vaust has also created a deutsch catalog for EvenMore, along with a template for creating new catalogs and a catalog compile script for users to create their own catalogs easily. (ps)

VNC: zvnc V.1.1
David Gerber has released version 1.1 of his VNC client "zvnc" on 28. December 2001. Following the changes:

  • Bugfix: Port- and cx_priority arguments were not observed.
  • New: Documentation extended with more FAQ entries.

"zvnc" is a small VNC-Client without display support (for controlling a second machine with monitor). The advantage of "zvnc" are a minimum of data to be send via the network, because the graphics data are not applied. That makes control by mouse and keyboard very straight.

The archive contains versions for AmigaOS 2.x / 3.x, and MorphOS.

Telepolis: Lifelong imprisonment becaus of distribution of unused machine time?
In this article Birgitte Zarzer reports about the system administrator David McOwen, who provided unused machine time of several computers of the University of Georgia to distributed.net, and thereby catched harshly trouble in return. He will face court in January and possibly will catch very long lasting imprisonment.

There are also many Amiga users helping distributed.amiga.org to crack the RC5 key. This worldwide competition is about to crack a 64bit key by calculating all of the 18.4 trillons of possibilities. One can provide unused computing capabilities of the own machine for this matter by using some specified software.

APC&TCP

Computer club: APC&TCP dissolved (Update)
On 23rd December 2001 APC&TCP announced officially that the computer club APC&TCP was dissolved. The APC&TCP distribution continues to exist. (ps) (Translation: rh)

Update 31. December 2001:
Kilian Servais, issuer of the APC&TPC disk magazine NoCover (German) wrote to the German comments on this article:

Hi!
Dissolving of the club in deed is not that tragical, because the only service, which alwas has been taken consequently, was the NoCover. Meantime this became freeware and everybody, who would like to, can registert to the email distribution list free of charge - just send an email to kilian@apc-tcp.de! In the times of Internet and email a club, like the APC&TCP has been, only makes sense in a very limited way, anyway, cause the Community will stay alive in any case. All users without Internet account can get the NoCover on floppy disk, as well. Due to the club dissolving the yearly charge slipps, but though we will try to offer as much services as possible.

So, at heart dissolving of the club is no step back but a step forward. The NoCover can get well as freeware, Andreas can concentrate on the Future (German Amiga games magazine), etc., etc.. So people: We'll keep at it!! What ever may come!!

Phone costs: TTimeDeluxe version 3.19
With TTimeDeluxe you can keep track of your online costs. This update of version 3.18 to 3.19 makes TTimeDeluxe ready for the Euro. The switch to Euro should not be made before 01.01.2001 or there may be rounding errors otherwise. TTime is now Freeware.

IMPORTANT: TTime just changes the currency name and updates the TTime logfile. You'll have to change the prices in the preferences and the saved projects yourself. (ps) (Translation: rh)

Telepolis

Telepolis: Mail for you!
An initiative wants to retaliate upon AOL - they return one million CDs to sender.

In his article Torsten Kleins talks about the return of one million AOL CDs planned by Nomoreaolcds from a completely different point of view.

»Christmas is the time for giving. Our cupids get extensively packed presents from indoctrinated salespersons, donation collectors leave houses with filled collecting boxes, even postmen and garbagemen - sorry: post deliverers and garbage technicians become the target of our lordliness.
But there are only a few companies as involved with the latter two professional guilds as AOL is. What the fist one puts into our postpoxes in exhausting legwork the second one comes to pick it up shortly after: AOL CDs. It is the time to say thank you to the friendly provider from America. Let us send a parcel to AOL.«

Individual Computers: xsurfadsl.device Snowflake-Bugfix
A new update of the PPPoE-driver for our networking card X-Surf can be found in the support-area of our website. The last bug in the core routines has been removed, so a connection to the internet is stable at full transfer rates for several hours. Since this version has only been tested shortly, it remains in beta state. The archive contains an English readme file for the first time.

The driver is free for owners of the X-Surf ethernet card. It lets you connect to DSL and cable modem services that use the PPPoE-standard without the need to buy expensive additional software. In Germany DSL is marketed as T-DSL by the Deutsche Telekom, but smaller providers like 1&1, Hansenet and some local services also offer this broadband technology.

We want to remind our German customers of the new terms and conditions at the Telekom: If you order DSL before January 1st, you'll get the DSL modem for free. After that, you'll have to pay 119,95 EUR for the modem! (ps)
