Update on the 3D hardware driver for the PiStorm32 (PI4/CM4)
Steffen Häuser has sent us another status update on the current progress of the crowdfunded development of a hardware 3D driver for PiStorm cards: PiStorm3D is now at a stage where more complex demo programs can run on it. MiniGL is being used as the 3D interface. The downside is that applications and games have to be specially adapted, but on the other hand, there are no licensing issues that might arise with a Warp3D driver.

A video shows the Gears demo from the MiniGL distribution running on a PiStorm CM4. To put the performance into perspective, Häuser explains: The demo runs in 32-bit mode on a CM4 at 125 FPS; the same demo, linked with standard MiniGL, runs on a CyberstormPPC+Cybervision at 20-30 FPS (though only in 16-bit mode) or on a WarpOS PCI PPC card as a PPC version with an 800 MHz G3 and a 3D card at about 90-100 FPS.
