"Die Welt": How The Chips Learned Being Noisy "Until 1985 acoustical there was no alteration according to the standard of computer sound which was introduced by C64. To this time Atari had the idea of producing an home computer Atari ST equip with a MIDI-interface. This Musical Instrument Digital Interface made it possible to control electronic music instruments like keyboards with the computer. Atari ST was the first computer in series that used this possibility and made the data exchange between computer and music instruments possible. The built-in 8-Bit-sound-chip had only the ability of producing three mono voices, but the main processor worked perfectly together with the MIDI-interface. Musicians from all over the world recognized the future of computer music and almost each sound studio connected its mixing desk with an Atari ST. Since the early nineties a MIDI-interface was standard for sound cards. Two years after the introduction of the ST, in 1987, Commodore set a new standard for music computers with the Amiga 500 for the mass market: four-channel-stereo was the new standard. Programming of music directly in the computer was now possible without expensive equipment. For a long time this was the greatest advantage of the Amiga towards other computers. Because of that and because of its great graphical abilities it was the game computer at all." Also in the today`s `Die-Welt`-article Concerto Commodore it is reported of the musical abilities of the C64. [News message: 10. NVidia OS Opinion Poll There is an opinion poll at the NVidia news site in the left menu about the preferred operating system. The Amiga is also on the list and is currently on the third place with 17,99 % after BeOS and Windows. Supplement 11.01.2001: The opinion poll has been canceled because the voting was falsified by scripts which vote again and again. The script-kids do not have the faintest idea which harm they make! Amiga-Community.net now with Customer Portal Amiga-Community.net perhaps is the only customer portal for Amiga. You can give your opinion about products or websites for Amiga. One can enter anything dealing with Amiga, e.g. shareware - freeware - hardware - software - ..... You can also suggest new categories and products. Picture Supplement regarding WoA 2000 Mirko Nauman has sent us a whole lot of pictures from the WoA2000. Unfortunately we cannot publish all of these, cause 34 MB are simply way too much. We selected the nicest pictures and made a little catalog out of these which you can find here. This is how the pictures were taken: Mirko filmed on the show with his MiniDV video camera SONY DCR-TRV8E and then connected this camera via SVHS cable to his second Amiga with PicassoIV and PalomIV TV module. As his camera takes 25 frames per second he had to select and save the best pictures. Then he converted the pictures saved before to JPEG using the picture format converting software GfxCon by Dirk Farins. [News message: 09. We consider the following suppositions:
With the knowhow of Kato and some other persons we will try to develop one of the above mentioned products. We make no promises! Additionally we are looking for distributors that would like to support the investment and will get better conditions. And last but not least we would like to come in contact with other projects of this kind, cause if there are already projects like this running, we will renounce ours. [News message: 08. CES: Interview with Grant Courville, QNX At CES, Christoph Dietz has interviewed Grant Courville from QNX (English translation by Martina Jacobs): QNX, also one of more than 1,500 exhibitors on CES in Las Vegas, is still in mind of the Amiga community as a partner for the Amiga platform from the age of Jeff Schindler and later of Jim Collas. About that time, development after that - and regarding this most of all about porting to PPC boards by phase5 taken in consideration - I talked to Grant Courville. To Courville, former development manager and now manager of the "World Wide Sales Engineering", after the end of development together with Amiga, QNX benefits from many users' and developers' feedback QNX received. Those days QNX had placed "QNX on disk", their operating system with browser, TCP/IP stack and some demos, on one single 1,44 MB disk. Also the neutrino's multimedia capabilities made capital from the developments which - by the way - mainly were done by QNX. But also the marketing effect would have been very fortunate for the company's further assignment. The splitting of the Amiga community into QNX and Linux supporters, which rose Jim Collas' decision, he regards to be the most negative effect imaginable. He will take a look at the AmigaSDK in any case, cause "perhaps there might be another future for QNX and Amiga". He thinks porting to QNX would not be a big problem. As in July 1999 the porting of neutrino to the PowerUP boards by phase5 was announced (see our message) users started hoping, again. But there never was more to see than the press release. Unfortunately phase5 never delivered any PPC board to enable QNX to use the Amiga computer available. Contact to phase5 dropped away as time went by. Though there is the QNX operation system for PPC processors in the meantime, but just not for PPC equipped Amiga computers, cause there is no matching to the typically Amiga custom chips. Due to the minor number of existing boards chances for porting are to estimate as very low, said Courville finally. European Contact Addresses: QNX Software Systems Ltd.
