AMIGAplus Redaktion

AMIGAplus 12/2003 (#142): Weihnachtszeit

HardwareAssistent: New version 0.32 (Update)
Version 0.32 of "HardwareAssistent" has completed.

In the previous version 0.31 of the archive the directory Installed was unfortunately not packed. Therefore the program HardwareAssistent could not remember which cards have been already installed. This bug has been cleared.

The launcher was also updated. It now uses the assign HardwareAssistent: to start the HardwareAssistent.

Please consider that there can be still bugs in this early version. If you find bugs then please write a mail to walternn@studi.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de.

DJBase will take care of the Driver Descriptors. The official support page where you can download the current Driver Descriptors is http://hwa.amigaworld.de.

Download of HardwareAssistent v0.32 (228 KB).

If you have a card that the list do not contain please use the program DriverDescriptor Creator to create a DriverDescriptor for this hardware. Then please send this file (with .info file) via email to walternn@studi.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de.

Update: (19.12.03, 13:25, snx)
Norman Walter wrote the following lines: I got the messages that the install script would not work. But this is only the case if you unpack the archive with the bugy version of Unarc which AmigaOS 3.9 contains. Unarc replaces blank characters by underscores. Therefore please use a different program or unpack the archive via lha x.. (snx) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOne: "EasterEgg" in U-Boot
In a thread on amigaworld.net Thomas and Hans-Jörg Frieden explained a first "Easteregg" which has been hidden in U-Boot.

Those ones who do not want to know something of PPC, multitasking and graphical user surfaces can activate the second modus of its AmigaOne by entering the following command lines in the U-Boot command line:

setenv easteregg 1
saveenv
reset

Deactivate:

setenv x86_mode
setenv vga_fg_color 'n'
setenv vga_bg_color 'n'

'n' stands for standard ANSI colour values where you have to enter e.g. "0" for black or "7" for white. The variables "vga_fg_color" and "vga_bg_color" can be used to modify the optical surface of the BIOS screen. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Emulation: "SheepShaver" Emulates a MacIntosh PPC on x86
"Sheepshaver" is the first Mac emulator for x86 PCs capable of emulating PPC-based Macintoshes. The software currently emulates a 604 CPU, requires a ROM image from a PCI-based "Old World" Macintosh, and works with MacOS up to version 8.6. Sheepshaver is Open Source, and right now only a Linux version is available.

The program's homepage is currently just a clean building space, with a files section in which you can get the sources for the current version.

On emaculation.com there's a support forum for the emulator. Those interested will find there a few hints for the use of the software, and there are also ready-compiled binaries there for download. (cg) (Translation: dm)

Amizilla Project: Prize Markedly Raised
As Bill Panagouleas shared on ANN, a previous high-ranking executive of Netscape who wishes to remain unnamed has contributed $2000 to the pot for the Amizilla project.

The executive is a longtime Amiga user, who still makes frequent use of WinUAE and the Video-Toaster-Flyer. Altogether there is now the sum of $6200 as a reward to the person or team who ports Mozilla or Firebird and thereby helps the Amiga with a modern browser. (snx) (Translation: dm)
