AmigaOS 4: AmiFTP 1.900
The Swedish dealer Guru Meditation has succeeded to obtain the sources to the Reaction-based FTP client AmiFTP (screenshot) from the original author Magnus Lilja. The program will continue to be distributed as freeware, Joachim Birging has assumed further development. Changes in version 1.900:
  • Ported AmiFTP to OS4 by Joachim Birging
  • Added AmiDock support. Use the new tooltype DOCKY to enable it
  • Also changed prefs to use application.library instead of the old IFF format. The old format can still be imported from the settings menu
  • Small changes to the GUI to reflect ReAction changes made in OS4. This is an old ClassAct program, remember.
  • Changed the old images in the SpeedBar to use Mason's AISS images instead.
  • Removed all ReqTools.library references and changed them to either ASL or ReActions Requester class.
  • Added support for AmiUpdate.
  • Fixed the fuelgauge in the transfer window.
  • Added "Save last dir visited" checkbox to the site edit window. AmiFTP can now save the last dir you were in.
  • Added Save prefs silently option to main prefs.
  • Removed the buttons at the bottom of the window. Since SpeedBar can be text-only now you can configure AmiFTP to use text-only buttons at the top instead.
  • Replace string + button with GetFile/GetFont where appropriate.
  • Added mouse wheel support in main window and site list.

Ralf Steines (ANF)

Back to the Roots: Status information
In the meantime, since the most diverse speculations on the whereabouts of the back2roots.org main archive have spread in the Amiga and emulation community, which is well-versed in rumors, here is a brief status update:

The BTTR server was never disconnected, but ran technically unattended for the last two years (more precisely, since the summer of 2005). Since everything is automated except for updates, this was initially not a problem either.

Surely, everyone has noticed that we suffered under massive disk space bottlenecks and our update frequency became ever sparser. Then, through appeals for donations, we have tried to afford financing our further growth (and we still have a lot up our sleeves) with the help of the community.

A considerable amount of donations came together, too, so that for now, nothing stands in the way of the project's future. But now, a complete disruption of the hard disk storage unit came by, despite all the stability of the automation in the absence of the programmer Ralf Steines (hippie2000) from the Net. In the process, important parts of the BTTR engine were overwritten with empty files. Surely, everyone has seen the result...

Anyway, Ralf is back, the core of the team is reunited, and right now, we are working on the reconstruction of the server which is located at the University of Trondheim, to make possible the next growth of the project.

To all those who have donated until now: Count on it that everything arrived and will now be used (or was already used) for the specified purpose. All others are still welcome to participate. You can find details on back2roots.org.

In the next weeks, we are reconstructing everything, reinstalling the machines, configuring everything, in order to be available to you soon in old glory again. Afterwards, it goes on with new updates.

Till then, the page is available symbolically with limited functionality, so that everyone can see that we are back, so please, a little patience still.

Best regards,
Your back2roots.org team (snx) (Translation: cad)

Instant Messenger: Jabberwocky 1.8b6 (beta)
Jabberwocky is an MUI-based Instant-Messaging-Client for AmigaOS 3/4 and MorphOS which is able to access different messaging-networks (e.g. AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo) with the help of so called server modules. Changes since version 1.7:
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when a "topic" was entered in the conference window before joining a converence.
  • Account window "connect" & "register" buttons are now disabled when Jabberwocky is connected.
  • Changed menus to disable Roster menu and roster contextmenu when Jabberwocky is not connected. Some menuitems are disabled if there is an empty roster when Jabberwocky connects.
  • Fixed a crash in network discovery function that resulted from attempting to visit a jabber server in the agents window with Jabberwocky not yet connected to a Jabber server.
  • Added loading and saving of codeset prefs and activated existing "Charset" GUI elements in prefs.
  • Merged in code diffs for charset conversion in chat windows. Charset conversion is untested at this point.
  • Fixed long standing bug in prefs loading of an event command with quotes and the quotes appear as they should instead of escaped XML.
  • Added some serial debugging that can be activated when a "Debug" version of Jabberwocky is compiled.
  • Added functions to obtain external IPA address from Jabberwocky homepage for file transfers through a Router.
  • Added prefs item to activate the external IP address retrieval.
  • Updated Iksemel library to latest available version.
  • Added "usedclasses" identifier and array so that only the external classes actually used by Jabberwocky will be listed in the MUI preferences. This only works for v20+ MUI and will be ignored by older MUI versions.
  • Updated locale catalogs and added Swedish catalog.
  • Localize main window status messages.

Photos and news from Pianeta Amiga
This weekend in Empoli (Italy) the "Pianeta Amiga" takes place. ACube (Sam440ep), Hyperion (OS4) and other companies take part. Meanwhile first photos and news from the event are available:

Andrea "afxgroup" Palmate is currently porting the P2P-client Bourriquet which is based on eMule to AmigaOS 4 (screenshots: 1, 2).

At lightelements.com the first photos can be looked at. Additional to the PPC-motherboard Sam440ep, which is sold to customers for the first time, empty packages of the soon coming up operating system "AmigaOS 4"-classic version were shown at the event for preadvertising reasons. In this way ACube probably tries to reveal that the distribution of the classic version certainly will come.

If there will be further messages they will be announced as soon as possible. (cg) (Translation: dr)
