AmigaOS 4.1: Warp3D backward compatibility with 'NovaBridge'
At this year's AmiWest it was announced that Hans De Ruiter is working on NovaBridge: This driver should allow all 3D applications written under the old Warp3D and MiniGL to work on modern graphics cards like Radeon RX and Radeon HD. As the author explained in a blog post from late October, NovaBridge came about after further discussion about how confusing Warp3D's Nova naming scheme was. The main problem with this would be the fact that the end user would need to know about this incompatibility in order to get software to work accordingly. This is now to be solved by replacing the hardware-dependent code in the W3D_SI driver with Warp3D Nova code.

In consequence, this means that end users no longer need to worry about 3D APIs. Warp3D, Warp3D Nova, MiniGL, OpenGL ES 2, GL4ES should all work as long as Warp3D Nova drivers are installed. And developers would never need to write a Warp3D driver again.

Work on this driver is still ongoing, but Roman 'kas1e' Kargin has now summarized the current state of development in a YouTube video. In it, he notes that WarpOS apps like WipeOUT2097, Heretic2, demos of Encore, MadWizzards, etc. are working. They would all run in hardware rendering mode and would not require any patches. According to his conclusion, NovaBridge is currently the most compatible Warp3D of all possible realizations on any Amiga. Because even things that previously ran on Voodoo graphics cards but not on Radeon or vice versa would now just work as expected. (dr)

BASIC compiler: AQB 0.8.0
By his compiler AQB, Günter Bartsch aims to implement a modern, clean, Amiga compatible and future-proof BASIC that is geared to, but no clone of Microsoft's AmigaBASIC and QuickBASIC, respectively.

Yesterday the developer has released version 0.8.0 on GitHub and has given us some notes on it:

"Actually I planned to release only a minor release with focus on sprites and BOBs, but somehow the path of development led me into another direction. BOBs and animations are now available in the runtime, but while testing I realized that I could use a debugger - so I did and now there is a 0.8.0 instead of a 0.7.4 and as a big innovation there is a real source level debugger.

The debugger is still expandable, but has all the basic functions that a debugger must have - in particular, you can insert breakpoints, examine variables and include trace outputs in the programs - the whole thing is quite useful for debugging. In the course of this, the editor was also rebuilt under the hood - so there is now a real debug console and the editor can display breakpoints and generally interact with the debugger."

As always, the author welcomes feedback, bug reports and suggestions from our readers. (dr)

New preview video: 'Creeping Me Out Hex Night' winter update
With another preview video, Michael 'Mixel' Dawes presents the current state of development of his Scorpion Engine created platformer 'Creeping Me Out Hex Night'.

Making a demo out of the winter stage was his initial plan, but there wasn't enough time for that. And so the developer presents the completed game scenes as a video update. They are to be used in the full game later. (dr)

Holly Lights: Xmas decoration for Workbench 1.3
For those who already want to give their Workbench 1.3 some Christmas glamour, Chris 'Crispy' Brenner has written a small program that conjures up a Christmas fairy lights on the screen:

Regarding how it works, the author states the following:
"When HollyLights first starts, it looks at the depth of the Workbench screen. It will then add the required number of bitplanes needed to bring the Workbench screen up to sixteen colors. It does this in such a way that is invisible to the Workbench program, so Workbench thinks it's still operating with the same number of colors it had before the program was run. This scheme has the benefit of allowing Workbench to operate faster than if it was truly in sixteen colors, but has a couple of drawbacks as well.

When the program initialization is done, and all of the graphics data is in place, then the holly and lights decorations are rendered into the main Workbench window once every couple of seconds. Rendering is suspended when the Workbench screen is not the frontmost screen.

If HollyLights was started from a four color Workbench, then the window will be decorated with lights of four different colors: red, green, orange, and blue. If started from an eight color Workbench, then only red and green lights will be shown. This is done so as to not interfere with the eight color palette."

And on the undesirable side effects, he writes the following:
"Since Workbench doesn't know about the extra bitplanes, it will not refresh any of the graphics in those bitplanes. Those extra bitplanes are refreshed by the HollyLights program when it renders its graphics once every couple of seconds, and because of this you will briefly see some leftover graphics in a window when you move it on top of any of the HollyLights decorations. This is normal.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a system friendly way to refresh the Workbench menus, so there will always be leftover graphics in the sections of the menus that intersect with the HollyLights decorations."

On weekend a version for AmigaOS 2 should also follow. (dr)

AROS: PipeWalker game ported
PipeWalker ist a puzzle-like game, where you have to make connections to link the beginning and the end: network connections, water pipes, electrical cables, roads, etc. Versions for Linux and Wondows have been available for a while, now an implementation for AROS has been released as well.

Amigatronics has published an article on this topic (English translation), which gives a visual impression of the game by means of screenshots. (dr)
