Eternity News: MPG Video-card / USB for AMIGA
Eternity wrote:
We are looking for some developers for the realising of an MPEG-Video-card or a USB-card for the Amiga in co-operation with Kato Development:

Programmers that develop drivers and host programs, based on Linux-sources, for the Amiga. We consider the following suppositions:
  1. The intention to develop something 'New' for the Amiga.
  2. There has to be some time available.
  3. You have to know that you wont become a millionaire by developing for the Amiga.
  4. Will for co-operation.
  5. C and C++
  6. Know about the Amiga-hardware.

With the knowhow of Kato and some other persons we will try to develop one of the above mentioned products. We make no promises!

Additionally we are looking for distributors that would like to support the investment and will get better conditions.

And last but not least we would like to come in contact with other projects of this kind, cause if there are already projects like this running, we will renounce ours.

CES: Interview with Grant Courville, QNX
At CES, Christoph Dietz has interviewed Grant Courville from QNX (English translation by Martina Jacobs):

QNX, also one of more than 1,500 exhibitors on CES in Las Vegas, is still in mind of the Amiga community as a partner for the Amiga platform from the age of Jeff Schindler and later of Jim Collas. About that time, development after that - and regarding this most of all about porting to PPC boards by phase5 taken in consideration - I talked to Grant Courville.

QNX presents Neutrino

Neutrino not an a PC for once

Darrin Fry, manager Photon development, proudly prensents how the Amiga operating system would have looked like, if there wasn't any change of direction.

To Courville, former development manager and now manager of the "World Wide Sales Engineering", after the end of development together with Amiga, QNX benefits from many users' and developers' feedback QNX received. Those days QNX had placed "QNX on disk", their operating system with browser, TCP/IP stack and some demos, on one single 1,44 MB disk. Also the neutrino's multimedia capabilities made capital from the developments which - by the way - mainly were done by QNX. But also the marketing effect would have been very fortunate for the company's further assignment.

The splitting of the Amiga community into QNX and Linux supporters, which rose Jim Collas' decision, he regards to be the most negative effect imaginable. He will take a look at the AmigaSDK in any case, cause "perhaps there might be another future for QNX and Amiga". He thinks porting to QNX would not be a big problem.

As in July 1999 the porting of neutrino to the PowerUP boards by phase5 was announced (see our message) users started hoping, again. But there never was more to see than the press release. Unfortunately phase5 never delivered any PPC board to enable QNX to use the Amiga computer available. Contact to phase5 dropped away as time went by. Though there is the QNX operation system for PPC processors in the meantime, but just not for PPC equipped Amiga computers, cause there is no matching to the typically Amiga custom chips. Due to the minor number of existing boards chances for porting are to estimate as very low, said Courville finally.

Francis Charig: TAO was founded in 1992 in Bracknell nearby Reading, England. Until 1995 it was a virtual company, located in a bedroom.

Amiga-News: How many people are working for TAO?

Francis Charig: About 70 people. More then 50 of them are in the software department. They are coming from three major groups: the Video games industry, the Blue Chip Industry and we selected the best directly from the universities, Stanford for example.

Amiga-News: What's your position at TAO?

Francis Charig: I'm the chairman of TAO. TAO is not a public company. Sony and Motorola together own 30% of TAO. If TAO would be a public company, its market value would be about $100.000.000. Nowadays Amiga Inc. is our most important partner.

Amiga-News: Do you remember your greatest success?

Francis Charig: Of course, it was to bring this exiting engineering team together. These people are incredible. We only had a fluctuation of two people in the last 2 1/2 years.

Amiga-News: What was the worst day in TAO's history?

Francis Charig: [Thinks long] it was to loose business with our investor from the blue chip industry in 1995 while we had no customers.

Amiga-News: When did you had "First contact" with Bill McEwen?

Francis Charig: It was in October 1999. We introduced him to investors after he decided to use our software for the new Amiga. In fact: TAO saved Amiga.

Amiga-News: Are you familiar with Amiga's history?

Francis Charig: Yes, I know about it all. I know about Commodore, Escom, VisCorp, Gateway and all these things. I still have my Amiga, but unfortunately it's standing in the attic. Also my nephew used the Amiga. I loved gaming on it, e.g. BrakeOut.

Amiga-News: Can you describe the new OS with only three words?

Francis Charig: Consumer Multimedia Stack

Amiga-News: When will the new Amiga-OS be ready, in Q3/2001?

Francis Charig: Of course not! Someone in the next half year!

Amiga-News: We are just a few days in the New Year. Do you have a wish for this year?

Francis Charig: *Joking* Retirement. No, I wish that TAO would be successful in all of the key markets.

Amiga-News: Is the existing Amiga community important for you?

Francis Charig: Yes. The Amiga community provides ones of the best engineers and artist. There is more multimedia skill in the Amiga community than in the PC-World. But there is a discussion if memory protection is needed or not. I want to explain TAO's point of view. For what is memory protection needed? To prevent bad programmed software from crashing the computer. That means that it leads into bad programming. But the software for AmigaDE will run on your desktop but also on your mobile or in your car. Mobiles for example don't have memory protection. Are they crashing? No, the software for them is well programmed. If we add memory protection we have to have a very, very good reason. Because it slows down the operating system. Our goal is to deliver the best multimedia-operating stack. This also means speed!

Amiga-News: Some words to the community?

Francis Charig: We can make Amiga great together. To be great we have to lead the world. Amiga is delivering the best content to the mass market. If we always remember that, we can achieve.

Amiga-News: Thank you for this interview and have a successful stay at the CES.

Francis Charig: It was a pleasure to me. Thank you!

Heise: CES: The Computer Sector Deals in Entertainment Electronics
«On Saturday at 19 o'clock MET the Consumer Electronic Show (CES), the world's biggest annual entertainment electronics fair is opening its doors in Las Vegas. One and a half hour before, Bill Gates will hold his keynote, which he will - as known by now - change on the birth hour of his new favourite, the game console XBox.

Though this will be no more surprise to anybody, but there are a lot more things to discover at the CES: After all there are 1800 exhibitors at the start this year and in addition to this there is a "frame program" at the fair with over 100 presentations with about 300 experts. 110.000 visitors are expected from over 100 countries. The fair was first held back 1967 with some modest 200 exhibitors and 17.500 visitors.»

Christoph Dietz of amiga-news.de has flown to Las Vegas to report to our readers from the fair and to cover us with pictures. In addition he has arranged for some interesting interviews. You can expect interesting news.

Fun Time World: New forum in testing process
FTW writes:
«Nearly every Amiga-site has a forum, so why create one more? All of the forums that are working at our place currently are based on very simple technology can can hardly be expanded. The new forum is based on the Yet Another Bulletin Board' in short 'YaBB' and is offering every imaginable comfort. The forum will now be tested for some weeks and later on we will decide whether we stick to the system or remove it. The design is only partly adapted to out page. It will change during testing. To participate you need to register during which you can choose an appearance for yourself. If you wish so, your data will be stored in Cookies, so you will register automatically on your next visit. The new forum is really fun. We would be happy to find as many participants as possible. We will the create more special forums on request.»
