AmigaKit: Developers needed
Under AmigaOS 4 a library named application.library is used. Some programms which require this library are supposed to be ported to AmigaOS 3.x. Therefore AmigaKit is looking for developers who will write a new version of the application.library for AmigaOS 3.x.

Assembler and Linker: vasm 1.7e and vlink 0.15a
Frank Wille has released updates for the assembler vasm and its corresponding linker vlink.
Changes in vasm 1.7e:
- Ability to print the source line also in output module error messages.
- Current PC symbol in absolute code regions was erroneously relocated to the section's base address.
- Make sure that labels from absolute code regions are not relocated.
- m68k: Fix for a bug introduced in last version: fmovem list,(An) and fmovem list,(d,An) were no longer recognized as valid for M68k FPUs.
- PPC: Fixed mtvscr instruction, which uses the vB field instead of vD.
- ARM: Accept the new SVC mnemonic as an alias for SWI.
- ARM: Fixed macros. Previously only three characters for a macro name were allowed. Qualifiers are not allowed on ARM macros.
- std-syntax: Permit the '$' as start character and in the middle of a label (note: a terminating '$' still defines a local label!).
- std-syntax: A missing last macro argument no longer causes an error message, but is replaced by a default value (when defined) or an empty string.
- std-syntax: .org directive defines the offset from the current section's start address when it appears within a section (GNU-as compatibility).
- mot-syntax: ORG directive can be used within any normal section to define a block of code relocated to an absolute start address.
- mot-syntax: Numeric absolute symbol expansion is supported for macro parameters of the form \<symbol> or \<$symbol> (hexadecimal value).
- madmac-syntax: Removed the -rorg option, which is the default behaviour now.
- oldstyle-syntax: The special macro argument \@ is replaced by an underscore, followed by a six-digit number again, as before V1.7c.
- tos-output: Check for overflows in relocation fields.
- aout-output: Fixed a crash since last version, when embedding absolute code regions in a section.
Changes in vlink 0.15a:
- New option -mrel instructs the linker to merge all sections with PC-relative references between them. This was done automatically in previous versions, but makes no sense for most targets
- New option -hunkattr, which assigns memory attributes to an input section name. The memory attributes of all those input sections will be overwritten
- (elf) Introduced the new target "elf32jag", an unofficial ELF target for the Atari Jaguar RISC CPU
- (ados/ehf) Read/write extended memory attributes (0xc0000000 in hunk type or size). Extended attributes in object files seem inofficial, but supported by vasm now
- (ados/ehf) Allow memory flags with HUNK_PPC_CODE in object files
- (ados/ehf) Support HUNK_RELRELOC32 in executables (since OS3.0)
- (a.out) Fixed pc-relative relocations in relocatable object file output

Hollywood 6.1 available
Press release: Airsoft Softwair, the hardest working men in code business, are proud to present Hollywood 6.1. Hollywood 6.1 is a major update with many new features and bug fixes. The most important new feature is that Hollywood 6.1 now comes with GUIs for Mac OS (x86 and PowerPC) and Linux (x86, PowerPC, ARM). Previously Hollywood could only be used from the command line on these systems. Starting with Hollywood 6.1 the Mac OS and Linux versions come with a native GUI which is identical to the GUI used in the Amiga version.
Additionally, Hollywood plugins can now be linked into executables compiled by Hollywood. Speaking of plugins, Hollywood 6.1 contains major extensions to the plugin interface which will be utilized by a soon to be released killer plugin which has been three years in the making. This plugin (codename: Secret Weapon III) will be the most powerful plugin in the history of Hollywood and it will open up a whole new world of programming with Hollywood. And it will be released free of charge for all Hollywood users. So watch this space...
Here is a non-exhaustive list of new features in Hollywood 6.1:
- Hollywood has a GUI for all supported platforms now
- New sound channel API makes Hollywood's sound library much more flexible
- Hollywood plugins can be linked into executables now
- Support for streaming through sound.datatype on MorphOS
- Functions to conveniently load and save user preferences
- Virtual files can also be opened for writing now
- Fine-tuned control over appicons in the Amiga version
- Android extensions for the Hollywood APK Compiler
- New debugging and event functions
- Several new functions that were requested by users
- More convenient distribution model: the download version no longer requires you to run custom tools to generate an ISO image first; instead download versions are ready-to-run on all platforms now
- Lots of other changes, optimizations and bug fixes
- Ready for the killer plugin
Hollywood 6.1 is the ultimate Multimedia experience and a must-have for all creative people. Hollywood is available on a CD-ROM and as a download version. Both versions include Hollywood for all supported platforms. It is no longer necessary to buy separate licenses for the different platforms. Buying Hollywood gives you a single-user license for all 11 platforms supported by Hollywood. If you already own Hollywood, you can buy a discounted upgrade version. People who bought Hollywood 6.0 in 2016 can request a free upgrade.
Hollywood is the ultimate bridge between all the different AmigaOS compatible platforms and the other three modern desktop systems, Windows, Mac OS, and Linux! Additionally, Hollywood also supports the Android platform. A truly unique feature is the ability to cross-compile native executables for many different platforms including: AmigaOS3, AmigaOS4, WarpOS, MorphOS, AROS (x86), Windows, Mac OS X (x86 & PPC), and Linux (x86 & PPC & ARM). You don't even have to own these platforms in order to compile executables for them. It's enough to run Hollywood on one of the supported platforms and then compile programs for all the others! Only Hollywood makes it possible. If you want to learn more about Hollywood, please visit the the official Hollywood portal which also has a forum for all questions concerning Hollywood.
All this makes Hollywood The Cross-Platform Multimedia Application Layer. Join the Multimedia revolution and get your personal copy of Hollywood 6.1 now!

AmigaOS 4: Beta version of Cinnamon Writer 0.95
Claus Desler's Cinnamon Writer is a "compact and efficient word processor developed especially with Amiga and Amiga-like systems in mind" which can import RTF and DocX files and offers a spellchecker.
Almost three years after the last release, at least for AmigaOS 4 a new beta version is available which among others supports inserting pictures. The version for MorphOS still has some bugs. Therefore it has not been released yet. A version of the Cinnamon Writer for AROS will be released if the author once is "happy with AOS4 and MorphOS versions."
Furthermore the author asks for your feedback: "If you believe that CW is not displaying your Docx document correctly, I would very much like to have the document sent to bugs@desler.be so I can correct the mistake. However, please be aware that I cannot fix problems with things like textboxes and tables since they are not supported by CW yet. Also remember, that if you havn't got the truetype font used in your word document installed on your amiga, the text will look different, and this is not a bug."
New functionality:
- Support for images
- UTF format support
- Improved spellchecking
- Optimizations and stability improvement
- Much, much, more
Known problems:
- CW chokes with large documents
- Printing/PDF exporting is still very experimental. I am looking for users who uses ghostscript and printer with their Amiga routinely
- Cursor problems
- Screen garbage when starting up. This issue has been reported to me, but I cannot reproduce it. If you see this bug please report which machine you are using and which version of AOS you are running
- Trying to open a CW Docx format in Word leads to a warning. Just trust the document, and it should load just fine

Preview video: Amikit X ("A.L.I.C.E") launches Linux applications
A preview video shows the forthcoming version X of the emulator distribution Amikit, which is suppposed to be used in A-EONs announced Laptop A.L.I.C.E. ("A Laptop Incorporating A Classic Experience"). One of the important new features of Amikit will be launching Linux applications out of the emulated AmigaOS 3 - the video demonstrates this using the example of Firefox and the video player VLC.
In the video in each case one Linux application is launched, used and quitted without changing to AmigaOS or to another Linux application in the meantime. This demonstrates one of the substantial problems such a emulation have: For example the windows of Firefox or VLC would vanish behind the Amiga emulation running in full screen mode if you click on the Workbench and you can only change back to the Linux program by using the keyboard shortcut ALT-TAB.

File manager: Tasko (update)
"Tasko" written by Andreas G. Szabo offers any number of directory windows you like. Between them, you can copy files with drag&drop - for each new directory window, just start Tasko once again. The current release is called a "release candidate", which probably includes bugs. So far you cannot delete empty directories.
Tasko requires AmigaOS 3.0 or higher. The author recommends at least AmigaOS 3.5. The screennotify.library is supported, that means if the Workbench is supposed to be closed or opened, Tasko immediately responds.
Download: Tasko_v1.0rc6.zip (176 KB)
Update: (03.03.2016, 06:00, cg)
Meanwhile the sixth "release candidate" is available. According to Andreas G. Szabo "now the files list is only refreshed when the dir reading is ready. However you can turn back on the live-refresh in the menu settings. I also changed the live-refresh method and it perhaps now performs better." Additional changes:
- Only one lister is read/refreshed at a time.
- Initial bookmarks feature added, drag dirs or volumes into the bookmarks list (turn it on in the settings menu).

Review: Netsurf under AmigaOS 3 (Update)
If nowadays users of classic Amiga hardware are going to surf the Internet, until recently they could only choose between iBrowse and A-Web. But both web browsers have not been updated since 2006 and 2011, respectively. As long as you are only intending to browse websites like amiga-news.de or the Aminet, then these two are sufficient - but it is quite impossible to access more complex websites like yahoo.de. Our editor Daniel Reimann has examined the new alternative called Netsurf:
In recent times, almost unnoticed a third option for surfing the Internet has been added: Netsurf. More precisely you would have to say a third and a fourth option, because there are two different versions of this browser that was originally ported to AmigaOS 4. Almost unnoticed, because these ports were only early alpha versions. Now both ports have been released in version 3.4.
Netsurf is a free, open source web browser, which is available for different platforms. The project was established in 2002, the first public version 1.0 of Netsurf was released in 2007. Already in August 2008 a port for the operating system AmigaOS 4 was added. Since that time, the browser has been uninterruptedly developed and now is available in version 3.4.
Since about a year, Chris Young is also working on a ReAction-based port for AmigaOS 3. According to Chris, Artur Jarosik has been developing a version for OS3 for a longer time, but which so far required the ixemul-environment. Today we are going to have a closer look at the port of Chris Young and find out if this version can be launched, is working or even is suitable for daily use. Test system was an Amiga 1200, extended with a Blizzard 1230/50 and 32 MB RAM, which is connected to the scart port of a TV set.
The readme states explicitly that AmigaOS 3.5 or 3.9 with 32 MB RAM are required. Besides it is pointed out that "this is early beta quality software for testing only". Chris also wrote, that "it *will* crash!". Well, this I can already tell you: Netsurf did not crash a single time - this is quite an unusual quality concerning Amiga software: Hats off! The archive also contains a detailed tutorial in AmigaGuide format.
While earlier versions of Netsurf could not be unpacked under OS3, this is no longer a problem with the latest Lha archive. It contains an installer, which simply copies Netsurf to the desired destination and finally runs FixFonts. Afterwards you can launch Netsurf without installing any other additional Software.
After a few seconds, a first welcome screen is opened which tells you that Netsurf is "The Open Source Web Browser for AmigaOS 4". After that, the browser window is opened. The first time you start the program, a locally saved home page is loaded:
Of course this default home page can be changed.
Chris Young has uninterruptedly developed his port of Netsurf. While in earlier versions the preferences window did not work, the latest version even has added Tabs - which so far cannot be closed, though.
As you can see looking at the screenshot, the buttons for "forward", "backward" und "reload" currently do not work. According to Chris, this bug crept into the latest release while implementing the tabs.
Before we are going to load some more complex websites using Netsurf, two facts: Javascript is still disabled. And which perhaps is some more disappointing and because this considerably limits Netsurf: HTTPS connections do not work using this version of the browser. According to Chris Young it should work, but when accessing howsmyssl.com, after a few seconds a message pops up: "Timeout was reached" - therefore at the moment you cannot access websites like yahoo.com which use HTTPS.
But what Netsurf can load: www.tagesschau.de
As you can see (by the way, in the background the Workbench works using 256 colours) sometimes there are some graphic bugs if you use the "normal" presentation. The horizontal scroll bar also is missing. But the browser has a real nice and handy feature: It can scale.
According to Chris Young, this function still does not work as it should, because the website should not be cut off at the side, but either there should be the horizontal scroll bar or the whole website should be seen. For me, this feature was very helpful, because often the fonts are displayed much better when the website is scaled.
I want to mention two issues: Speed and memory consumption. As you can see on the lower left corner of the last screenshot, Netsurf always informs you about the time it takes for loading a website. In this case it took Netsurf 266 seconds to load tagesschau.de, while amiga-news.de is loaded in about 42 seconds. This is a lot of time but compared with its previous version, which makes me watching the monitore for about 70 seconds, it loads it much faster.
According to the author, all preferences are set by default to values which speed up the browser as much as possible. Only in respect to the memory he recommends to try out to set the value of the disc cache to 0. In my case, this had not any influence to the speed of Netsurf. However I did increase and decrease the value for the memory cache: For my computer, the value of 20 MB was found to be best. Higher values did slow down my system again.
As usual for Amiga browsers you can disable loading pictures, which saves a lot of loading time. Everyone has to decide for himself if and when pictures should be loaded ot not. For example loading the website www.spiegel.de took Netsurf 874 seconds to load with pictures and only 292 seconds without loading of pictures.
The number of colours set for the Workbench screen did not have an explicit influence to the loading time of the browser.
By the way, I did not have any issues with missing free memory at any point. The lowest available free memory which I had was about 11 MB. On average I had 19 MB of free RAM.
What conclusions can we draw from our tests? Actually I can recommend to give this early version of Chris' Netsurf a try! Of course the missing features like disabled Javascript or still not working HTTPS support are limiting the potential of the browser - and compared with iBrowse and AWeb, loading times sometimes are extremely high. But already at this early stage, Netsurf reliably works and gives you the option to access websites, which until now were not available to the classic Amiga user. Chris Young asks to report bugs to chris@unsatisfactorysoftware.co.uk. You can have a very nice and personal contact to him and he actually does answer to your questions and problems. So it depends on all of us, the users of OS3, to provide feedback to him and demonstrate our interest so he keeps looking forward to develop Netsurf with energy and enthusiasm.
Update: (04.03.2016, 00:30, cg)
In the meantime, we figured out how the SSL problem can be solved: The configuration file Netsurf/users/default/choices contains a "curl_fetch_timeout" that determines how many seconds Netsurf will wait until it displays the timeout error message. Increasing that value to 60 we managed to loadebay's classifieds (just to hit the next stumbling block, due to the lack of Javascript):
Loading howmyssl.com worked fine aswell now. Why it describes our SSL client as "bad" instead of "imrovable" - Chris Young tells us it should be the latter - is currently being investigated.
