VillageTronic answers :-)
On February 3rd, the German main page of amiga-news.de reported that, with a change in layout on the VT website, visitors get the impression that the Amiga area is now only secondary for VT. Yesterday, Village Tronic spoke out about the ParaGlide project. Since no excellent hard- and software engineer could be found in 1999, and ParaGlide was not on top of the priority list, VT concentrated on other projects. ParaGlide has not been cancelled, however, since the developers from the Amiga section would not have it.

Village Tronic is now looking for a ParaGlide fan who is an experienced PCB layouter, using the Protel Layout System. Candidates please contact amigasupport@village.de. (Translation: mb)

Eternity expecting visitor number 20,000
The Eternity pages enjoy growing popularity, as we could see from our growing visitor numbers. So there is stuff for free again for visitor number 20,000: If you can prove (screenshot and time) that you were visitor 20,000 of the Eternity page, you can choose:
  • a highspeed IDE controller or
  • a game from our current offers

With the "proofshot" and the above data, you should contact the webmaster (patrick@synotec-webdesign.com). If there is more than one, the time of the visit decides. :-) (Translation: mb)

amiga-news.de now with Amiga Link Directory (ALD)
amiga-news.de opened the new Amiga Link Directory (ALD) for the public on 23.1.2000. The new directory`s aim is to become THE directory for AMIGA-pages. Innovative, a software-company based in Herzogenaurach/Germany developed the required technology for this exciting enterprise.

Entries are sorted by categories and letters or can be found easily via the available search-function. In order to guarantee an always up-to-date database, entries can be changed by the "owners" of the entry at any time via a previously defined password. For every entry, if provided by the "owner", further information is available. This can include, but is not limited to the postal adress as well as the phone-number, email-adress and homepage.

The ALD will also partially be available via the popular Aminet-CDs (means: only entries of "owners" who want their entries to be part of a "directory" on the Aminet-CD). For the first time there will be a bridge between the AMIGA-online and -offline-world - and it will be called ALD. This way communication within the AMIGA-community will improve and companies can also reach users, that don`t have an internet-connection yet.

Help us building the greatest online-directory for AMIGA-websites worldwide and add your website today.

The ALD can be found at: www.amiga-news.de/cgi-bin/anwd-db.pl (Translation: mb)

Storm MP3 Digital Audio Decoder
Storm MP3/e is a device plugged into the parallel port, capable of MP3 playback even on an accelerated A500, 286 or Archimedes (?). The device is powered by a 9V battery, powering up and down together with the host computer. Expansion options include an IR port, memory expansion (probably for internal MP3 use only) and radio reciever. (Translation: mb)

AppleInsider: Outlook for Faster G4 Systems Appear Gloomy
Obviously, difficulties with the G4 CPU layout resulted in a very poor yield in G4 CPUs with more than 450 MHz (one or two per wafer). The situation will probably not change until late fall, when new CPU versions (of the G4, not the successor G5!) will be released. Until then, the G3 is the only PowerPC exceeding 500 MHz clock speed.

AMIGA

Executive Update by Bill McEwen
Amiga's Bill McEwen has posted an Executive Update:

"Greetings to one and all:

A great deal has occurred over the last couple of weeks, and it is only going to get more interesting as we move forward. It has been some time since I spoke with you, and I wanted to share some of the fun.

In the last two weeks we have announced our new foundation partner, started technical training with our new development team, and had many meetings with future technology partners

The responses have been overwhelmingly positive and, to quote an old song "they ain't seen nothing yet".

On January 8, 2000 at CES in Las Vegas we announced our partnership with the Tao-Group as our foundation OS partner. This is not just a technical but a strategic relationship and brings with it great rewards. I have asked Fleecy to write a short document highlighting the Amiga/Tao relationship from a more technical perspective, to save you from having to put up with my telling everyone how incredibly great and fantastic it is. We want you to make your own minds up.

In the next two weeks we will make another strategic partnership announcement with regards to the new path for Amiga. As with all our announcements, look at it against the whole picture and not in isolation.

After a week long trip to Germany and the UK I have come back with a much better understanding of what we can and cannot do. As mentioned before we are not going to make promises or product announcements. We will announce to you, the community, only after the deal is signed or the product is sitting before us. This won't put a stop to rumours, but it will make them all the more obvious. Change brings uncertainty, and in an information vacuum, mischief makers like to take the spotlight. If it isn't officially sanctioned by Amiga, don't believe it.

Our job as a company is to create exciting market opportunities for Amiga developers to take advantage of, and to give Amiga users a platform they can enjoy. This requires more than just an upgrade to the existing OS. This requires, indeed demands a complete strategy reaching into all areas of the present and the future. The time has come for all of us to move forwards, owner, developer, and user.

Many of you have sent us business proposals, and product marketing ideas, and for this we thank you, and ask for your patience as we look over them. Some are providing us with valuable insight into the desires of the Amiga community as a whole, others are providing us with a good chuckle. This is the Amiga advantage that other platforms just do not share.

Over the next few months there may be some companies that come out with their own plans, or state that we do not have the community at heart as we move forwards. The reality is, they do not know what we have planned. In order to stay focused and to keep up our incredible pace, we are not sharing our plans outside of our signed partnerships.

We have to prioritise and act singlemindedly if we are to reach our first plateau in our given timescales. Once there we will be able to pause for breath. Some are not happy about this, but they do not know the full plan. Our mission is not just about restoring the Amiga, but about pushing it forwards as THE technology for tomorrow.

This means that if you hear something annoying, or frustrating, or downright nasty, and the source is not Amiga Inc, then disregard it.

Plain and simple.

If you did not hear it from us, or read it here on this web site it is not true.

We are not asking for your trust or your undying belief. We only ask that you take us on OUR words and deeds, not on the misinterpretations of others.

We will soon be starting official meetings in Europe, the UK, and the US for developers and dealers. This will include introductory training seminars for the new OS, and introductions to the retail pricing and schedules. We will also begin the process of introducing the new web site, and putting the Amiga Advisory Council to work.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your hospitality during our meetings and for your continued support as we move forwards. We have had the chance to meet with many end users, developers, dealers, and new partners, and look forwards to meeting even more of you as time goes on.

There is a great deal of activity, with a lot of first footsteps on some truly amazing paths. New partners excited, old faces returning, familiar faces reminding us of our heritage. Indeed we are already having to move into bigger facilities, such is our rate of growth.

I know it can be frustrating but after years wandering lost in a dark place, the sun is finally starting to crack a smile on the horizon. Together, we will march into tomorrow.

Keeping the faith,

Bill McEwen and the rest of the Amiga Team." (Translation: mb)

AmiTech Dayton Amiga Users Group Project for the A2K Show
An offer to put your advertising in the AmiTech newsletter, which will be handed out for free to every visitor of the A2K Show, North America's largest Amiga show:

          Amitech Dayton Amiga Users Group Announces Advertising Opportunity

    With the demise of so many outlets for Amiga vendors and distributors to advertise in
these days it has become very difficult for those still supporting the Amiga to get the word
out that they are still around. We at AmiTech would like to invite you to advertise in our
March Special Show Edition Newsletter which will be distributed free to all attendees at the
A2K Amiga Show in St.Louis. This show has attendance in excess of 1100 people and is the
largest Amiga show in North America. This is a great chance to let people know about your
business, services and show specials.

    Take a look at our advertising rates. As you can see they are more than reasonable:

    All rates based on 8.5 x 11 page size: Full Page - $16.00
                                                              Half Page      - $10.00
           Black and white text/art only Quarter Page - $7.00
                                                              Business Card - $4.00

                                                         All prices based on US dollars

    For more details please contact:
                                  Eric Schwartz - erics@coax.com (Newsletter editor)
                                                                 or
                                  Len Carsner   - nard@erinet.com (Secretary/Treasurer)

    All advertising must be to us no later than MARCH 5 to give us time to layout the
pages. All ads must be paid in advance to be included. Make checks/moneyorders payable to:

    Len Carsner/AmiTech                                               AmiTech User Group
            905 Boone Street                             OR                     P.O. Box 292684
        Piqua, Ohio 45356-1815 Kettering, Ohio 45429-0684

Now is the time to act! The Amiga appears ready to make the comeback we've all hoped for.
Make sure the people out there know who you are! If you can't make the show this a great
way to spread your name around. If you are going to St. Louis, putting an ad in the
newsletter is a terrific way to insure that those who attend know you are there and to call
attention to your show specials.

    Over 1100 people were at last years show. A lot of money was spent on Amiga items
of all kinds. Wouldn't you like to share in the fun and camaraderie that is an Amiga show,
and get the attention your business deserves? Contact us today!

Thank You

With "The Ticker", Amiga Central is offering a new service. Instead of visiting a web-site explicitly, the special Ticker program automatically displays the current headlines. To read the messages, all you have to do is clicking on the headlines.

The free program runs on Amigas with AmigaOS v3.x, 1 MB RAM, Internet connection and the Open URL Library 2.x. It has been developed by Chris Page (The World Foundry), the idea is from Chris Korhonen. Ports are planned for e.g. Linux, Windows and BeOS.

AROS will become the development section of OAF. OAF is the Open Amiga Foundation which COSA will turn into.

OAF will care about the public relations and contact to Amiga. They will collect all informations and summarize them for AROS, so AROS can concentrate on the development. They will also care about money and legal matters, which means a lot less work for AROS. (Translation: mb)

Delays with MorphOS
The developer package for MorphOS will not be released this month.

Main reason for this is that Frank Mariaks CyberstormPPC failed in late 1999, and it took Phase5 two send-in/send-back cycles to realize that it is beyond repair.

BattleIsle DataDisk 3
Marco Frischkorn writes:
I am missing some maps for a new DataDisk. Mainly one-player maps. If somebody has some of those on his hard drive, just send them. As basic map set I am using the graphics from BattleIsle 1. If someone has maps for the DataDisk 1 (desert / winter), I would be happy about them, too, even while there are only one third of the needed maps are present right now.

Please send maps to marco_frischkorn@amigadev.de. When possible write some lines in addition to the map, like sollutions, backgrounds, about the person, and that you aggree in distribution on an extra DataDisk. The maps are throughoutly tested by myself and two friends. As soon as the DataDisk 3 is ready, everyone will recieve it automatically. (Translation: mb)

LightForce
Bad news on LightForce by StrangeWorlds:
On this weekend, the A4000 of Andreas Hippauf suffered a complete failure of the development partition. The development environments for LightForce, and the e-mail client YAM had to be reinstalled completely. Thanks to frequent backups, the sources were undamaged.

But the emails of (the) last month(s?) have been lost. If somebody has ordered the latest demo version and did not yet recieve it, please contact Andreas Hippauf again. Reminder: Due to the very low response to the e-mail feedback it has been decided to send out new demo versions only to interested users on request. The latest demo, by the way, already shows the usage of textures and extras, so it is well worth a look. (Translation: mb)

AminetGUI Update
After some time, I did some work on the Aminet-GUI again. This is mostly small bugfixes. Frames should now be displayed without disturbing borders on non-Amiga browsers, too. You can now switch directly from the tree structure to forum and guestbook. The link area has also been updated, adding some new links. In the future it will be possible to add your own links. The implementation of this functionality is still being worked upon, however. I added some auction and exchange websites to the interactive area. I am planning to add my own exchange area, but I am right now still looking for a suitable provider for such services. If someone knows a good provider, or has experience in CGI prgramming, please contact me.

Due to a hard drive crash with PFS-2, it will take some time until the next large update, since I have to completely rebuild my system. This can take some time since I have the majority of my programs from the Internet. On this occassion I can only advice you not to use PFS-2. It was the second crash I experienced. On the first crash I almost lost my complete web partition. The second crash took my dh0: drive down. So I will switch my system to SFS. The introduction of the new directory design will be delayed for said reasons, I am sorry. But I hope it won't be too long. (Translation: mb)

Problem with diskcopy v44.5
Andi of Future Visions writes:
The diskcopy included in OS3.5 (System drawer) is unable to correctly read and copy partitions over the 4GB barrier. If this is true for writing I have not yet tested, but I don't think it will work.

If now there is an error on a partition over the 4GB barrier, like the root directory defective due to a crash during writing, and the partition cannot be accessed by the normal file system, a normal user is unable to rescue his data. Tools like Disksalv are unable to access these partitions, and there is no FFS64-compatible "diskcopy" program on Aminet to copy the defective partition to the lower 4GB and use Disksalv on it there. So I urgently recommend not to hold important data on such partitions, since a recovery will be impossible. OS3.5 support has been notified. (Translation: mb)

New StrICQ version 0.1712
(Version 0.1710): An Enforcer hit was removed that opened the chat window again, making chatting impossible. The userlist still has a bug, which the author knows about. The bug looks like this: If a user goes online in ICQ, it is not noted in the user list. Tip: Select all entries, you can then see who has gone online.
The version available on the server is 0.1712 already.

Amiga in Macwelt 3/2000
In the "aktuell" area, the Amiga is mentioned in the Macwelt:
"Amiga moving again - Amino new owner
The Amiga trademark and accompaining technology has again changed owners. While, after the Commodore bancruptcy, first Escom and then Gateway held the rights, they were now sold to a company named Amino Development, according to a GNN report led by two former Amiga executives. Also according to GNN, Amiga users judge this as a chance for an Amiga comeback, possibly as Open Source." (Translation: mb)

News from the APUS frontline
The Sunsite server has already seen several new things this year!

For one, there is a new Bootstrap released, and additionally an archive for the Bootstrap with autodetect for WarpOS/PowerUp. Download: ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/projects/apus/boothack.

There is a brand-new, very good Installer for LinuxPPC5. Download: ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/prrojects/apus/install/redhat.

On Olliweb (title link), at CDSUPPORT, there is an archive with Installer and ready-made scripts for updating older LinuxPPC5-CDs from olliweb, which should run with all other linuxPPC5 versions.

At Linux.de there is a link to a PowerMac emulator for LinuxPPC5. In the manual it says that, with the right kernel patches (included), the PowerMac emulator should also run on Amigas with LinuxPPC5! Needed, among others: MacOS8.6 + romfile. (Translation: mb)

Heise: PC Manufacturers: New Concepts Wanted
"A basic rule of the technological society seems to win again: Innovative ideas and products recieve high acceptance and earn big profits. Holding tight to traditional concepts, on the other hand, leads directly to economical desaster. Not only the manufacturers of the C64, which was leading the way in it's time, had to learn this, when Commodore had to give up all hope for rescue in 1994. In the 90ies of the last millenium, when the Intel x86 based PC-architecture had made it's way for quite some time, users no longer wanted Commodore's products without hard drive - attempts to gain a foothold again with the Amiga came too late."

What's all the fuzz about pirate copies?
This text shall and must be widely known. However, the author doesn't want to start petty wars with all hacker groups at once. For this reason the author asked to have the text published ANONYMOUS! As the author is known to us, we accept this exceptionally, if only for the reason that we want to help sensitizing all parties involved for this subject, and give food for thought.

Copies have been sent to: AMIGA.de, Haage & Partner, Vapor, Holger Kruse, and Andreas Kleinert.

«Maybe some people have wondered what the article of Andreas Kleinert was all about. There have been pirate copies all the time, so why so much fuzz about them? Because it's a matter of survival! Not every maker of software has the financial resources of a company with windows :-) Furthermore, in the recent couple of days, it wasn't about some small web site with 2 - 5 pirate copies. Last friday Andreas was informed about an FTP server whose directory structure contains round about 1500 lines, each line representing one pirate copy.

Whenever he puts an update into AmiNet, it takes only 2 days for the cracked version to emerge. In addition there are cracking programs for personal use, and key generators. If I just estimate 10 copies with a value of 10 Marks for each entry of this server, we would be at 150,000.- DM. But the damage caused may be estimated much higher. And this is no computer for Win95/98, with a little Amiga on the side. This is AMIGA with a little MAC on the side! What do you need that isn't available for free in AmiNet? What more is needed than FULLY USABLE trial versions? All in vain? It does look that way. But in vain is not bargain priced or free. In vain are the efforts of a maker who doesn't make a turnover anymore. Pirate copies of OS 3.5 (who copies CD ROMs via modem)???

There are various roads to the future: the cheap one, that one C= has shown us already, haven't they? The unified, new windows every two years? Or one that stays affordable, and where together you can feel as a community. Where you show STRENGTH in doing without some things, and buying the product with support. I won't denounce anyone because he uses a pirated copy from time to time. Everyone has to make that out with himself. And I won't reproach a HACKER who overcomes a complicated security system. But taking away the small earnings for in part excellent programs from every little shareware author, and intimidating the last companies that have enabled us to hold out until today, that's unfair and has nothing to do with a sporting hack. That's just ciminal! And who thinks there aren't any clever heads on the side of those concerned may anticipate getting a fitting answer some day.

In the appendix [may be ordered if needed] of this mail I publish the contents of the FTP server. The people who run it should know that we already know now who they are and not only since today. They had their fun and should quit, because too much fun often isn't good for you.

Just a quick word to the aggrieved companies and programmers: Don't take this as a reason for negative thinking and mourning of losses, but as a sign that the support of the usership still lives and will keep on living. Because the users need you as makers like you need them as customers. If concerned software makers answer in need of data, they will get them. Furthermore it would surely be helpful to place the text on Anti Piracy after translation and leave it there.»

IT-SalesWeek article: Amiga (!), QNX, Transmeta
Erik Zühlke writes:
The IT-SalesWeek reports about the Amiga again, even a full page this time (p.10) "Comeback to a unsure future between MS and Apple". The article begins with "seldom has a platform won so stubborn :) users. For sure Apple users are already special, but the Amiga community is... just that bit more extravagant" :)). It continues with a rough overview (including picture) of the Amiga's live until sold to Amino. It closes with "...things look better than 8 weeks before for the Amiga, and the OS is ranked 2nd at the VaporAwards directly behind Windows 2000".

Among others, "misterWEB" by Charisma was pictured, an Internet device in form of a 25% tipped, touch-flatscreen including QNX Photon MCkernel. There are ports for adding printer, keyboard, USB, and it comes with fixed ISP. Just by the way...

I don't have an issue of the IT-SalesWeek handy. The cited text has been re-translated and will differ from the original, but I think the meaning of the words was untouched. If somebody has the IT-SalesWeek article and a scanner handy, I would like you getting into contact with me and mail me a scan... (mb) (Translation: mb)

Frogger PPC v1.52 released
Sebastian Jedruszkiewicz has released version 1.52 of the MPEG1/2 player Frogger on January 25th, 2000.

The following changes have been made since version 1.5:
  • v1.52
    • Ok, I made the 1.51 release too fast. There was a serious bug, which caused frogger to crash at start. I am very sorry. Please forgive me...
    • Frogger now shows mpeg resolution in asl requester ("Select Screen Mode (352x288)" for example), as suggested by Miroslaw Bagrowski.
  • v1.51
    • Frogger failed to recognize the RIFF streams (a vcd ripped streams) Fixed.
    • Seeking with audio is now possible. May cause deadlocks, so be carefull.
    • Frogger crashed when new mpeg was opened. Fixed.
    • 'DISPLAY FILE' caused crash. Fixed.
    • 68k version available again. 030 version will not be supported anymore. Do not ask for that. Buy better CPU.
    • 68k version does not need ixemul.library anymore.
    • Audio in 68k version is now decoded using the same decoder as in PPC version. This is slower, but at least it works.
    • Scaling routines in grey mode were broken. Fixed.
    • The same bug was in color dithering routines (when image was scaled). Fixed.
    • On some VideoCDs Frogger failed to decode correct stream resolution (it was always 0x0). Fixed.
    • From now on, NOSKIP turns off audio decoding.

The player is available for PPC- and 68k-Amigas (68040+) in different archives from the download page. 68030 was supported until version 1.48. (Translation: mb)

Amiga Future: Interview with Fleecy Moss
The translation of the article is now available (see below).

Original article:
Amiga Future posted a small part of an interview with Fleecy Moss on their website (German only). The whole interview will be released in issue 23rd of Amiga Future, which will be released on February 23rd, 2000.

According to the part of the interview posted, shipping of the development environment is planned for end of February, and the new system will come with an emulation enabling old software to run (and it's not UAE: "The team writing this emulator have full access to all chipset and OS sources".)

A translation of the text:

Interview with Fleecy Moss

This is of course only a small part of a large interview going to be released in issue 23 of Amiga Future (released February 23rd, 2000).

Hello Fleecy, you are surely a no-name yet to some of our readers, so please introduce yourself in short.

Fleecy: Hi folks, I am Fleecy Moss, age 33 and passionate Amigian. I am happily wedded to my wife Elspeth. We have three kids already, our boys Seth (9) and Yerran (8) and our 15 month old daughter Evie. Aside from Amiga, we greatly enjoy stuff like football, skiing, and gardening. Additionally, I am a fan of beer and wine.

LetÂ's talk about the future. After all the time standing still, there is a new owner again, going into a new direction again. What are your plans for the first 6-9 months of the year 2000?

Fleecy: Our development program has top priority right now, meaning a development einvironment for the New Amiga shipping at the end of February, minimum. We also work feverishly on deals guaranteeing developers a profitable market. And we also work on a plan making the transition from the old Amigas to the new ones as smooth as possible.

Are there already specific plans what to do with the so-called Amiga Classic line?

There will probably be a continued development of Amiga OS by third parties, since we know that the step towards a completely new system will take some effort for some. There will be an emulation on the New Amiga, enabling old software on the new systems. The team writing this emulation has full access to all chipset and OS sources.

Now about the new Amiga. Will the development of the new platform and operating system be done completely in-house?

The new Amiga operating system will be developed by the Tao Group, an English company with Amiga background. We will do the Usuability Layer for the new OS. The operating system is a RTOS and will be the perfect multimedia OS. It will additionally be hardware independant.

Will there be downward compatibility to the old Amiga?

Yes, as I said, there will be a software emulator, which is being worked upon.

When, and where, will the new system be presented to the public for the first time?

As said before, be can say for sure when we have it on our desk. Of course we will then be present on the larger shows like Comdex and E3 (world largest entertainment software show), too. And of course we will be participating in the traditional Amiga events, like the St. Louis show in April or the British WOA in May.

Write us your opinion! By mail, Fax or online in our forum!

Czech Amiga News

Freeware SNES emulator
A new SNES emulator is being worked upon, which will be released as freeware. It will support AGA and CyberGfx, and will require a 68040 (25 MHz) plus low-end PPC603. Sound will be processed by the 68k to achieve a higher performance. There will be an additional PPC-only mode.

The emulator is written in 68k and PPC Assembler. So far 32 people have contacted the development team, they hope for more reactions. For one to boost motivation, and for help in the development on the other hand (e.g. low-level informations about the SNES). Gifts for increasing motivation are gladly accepted.

Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:

 Things really are happening in the Amiga community, some of it fast
paced indeed. The first story in this issue came out on the day we
sent out the last "Amiga Update". It came out after the issue was
mailed, however, so it had to wait for this one.
 It's grouped with a couple of other stories that we hope will help
people begin to get a feeling for the work of Tao, Amiga's new
"content partner".
 We also find it interesting that Motorola, makers of the 68XXX family
of CPUs that have powered Amigas for so long, has taken a stake in
Tao. A story published recently in England carried the following
information:

 "Motorola Inc. has taken a small minority stake in Tao Group Ltd.
here and will use the company's virtual processor and Java-like OS
technology in portable communications and computing gear, Internet
appliances and digital-imaging products.

 Neither the size of Motorola's stake in the 35-person company nor the
monetary terms have been disclosed."

 The new Amiga has been in place for less than a month, and we're just
beginning to get a feeling of what their long term plans are. They
sound good so far. The only negative - a strong tendency to try so
hard not to be corporate types, they may end up scaring off potential
worthwhile business associates. We certainly hope that doesn't happen.
On balance, we're very pleased with events to date and feel all
Amigans have reason to feel much relief.
 Lots to read below - we hope you enjoy this issue.

Hello Brad,

 I hope this is the right addy to send stuff to?

 First let me say, excellent work with Amiga Update. I really look
forward to getting the news and info you send out. Please stay with us
and keep up the excellent work.

 Now that CUCUG's "Amiga Web Directory" is gone, sadly, what are our
best WWW sites to go to for Amiga News? Has anyone talked to CUCUG and
asked/begged them to continue? The community can use all the support
it can get and the AWD was a great presence on the WWW.

 Good luck to the *new* Amiga Inc. Go get 'em guys and dont give in no
matter what the "big" guys do, say or offer! The world needs a
realistic alternative and Amiga is it.

Regards

Simon
~~~~~~
Simon,
 Well, I hope you'll let "Amiga Update" help you keep up with the
news. As for alternative sites to the old Amige Web Directory, I'd
recommend two:
http://www.amiga.org/
http://www.realdreams.cz/AMIGA/
 Neither site has all the features the old CUCUG site, but both will
help you stay on top of Amiga news.
Dave,
 Thanks very much. As we're happy to state, we plan on being around
for a while to come.
 We've always been e-mail based, never download style, so I'm a bit
confused by your statement, but if you (or any reader) know of someone
who's bumped into our archive site and figured that's all there is,
please let them know we're a subscription based publication. And that
we'd be happy to welcome them aboard!
 Thanks again,
 Amiga and Tao-Group enter into a strategic relationship
 Las Vegas, NV January 8, 2000 - Amiga begins expressing plans for the
new Amiga with a strategic alliance with Tao-Group.
 "Things started going wrong the moment the PC rode into town and the
home computer revolution of the 1980s ground to a halt. We are here to
right that wrong." said Bill McEwen, Amiga's El Presidente. 'We kind
of feel guilty about not having been around to show the world the
evils of the PC, but inept management sent the Amiga off to a bad
place. Luckily, its users and developers have kept it alive, and now
we are back."
 "Existing products are very rude.' He continued. "Shoving PCI slots,
interrupts, file systems, registries, megahertz, and megabytes right
into your face. My grandmother just wants to play a game, or send an
email, or draw a picture. She doesn't want to have to mortgage the
house and get a masters degree."
 "Digital Technology has become stalled because of the predominance of
Windows." quiped in Fleecy Moss. "Putting a thousand monkeys on
typewriters may eventually produce the works of Shakespeare but it's
not something you're going to want to wait around for, and you don't
want to be responsible for cleaning up the mess in the meantime."
 "Our approach is outrageous. WE look at what actual people want, and
then give them the most simple, elegant solution. Even calling it
computing is falling into the PC trap. It is participation in the
digital content universe, whether it be developing an application,
playing a game, making your own video, watching TV or buying S&M gear
online. Computing companies are trying to paint digital convergence as
computers and TVs coming together, so they can stick "TV" in front of
PC and continue to sell the same old garbage. Digital Convergence is
something much bigger though. It is about content, information,
services, and activity transforming into a digital format and coming
together in a single place that has no boundaries. If someone tells
you you need a PC to get into this new content universe, smile nicely
and hit them with a big stick."
 "Elegance, simplicity, invisible and universal technology." sings
Bill McEwen, trying to get a word in edgeways. "That is why we are
just giddy to be working with the Tao Group. Others rant on about how
their products are next generation, warp capable, but the truth is
that most of them are based upon old concepts and architectures -
that's why you need the latest monster machine just to type letters.
Chris Hinsley (CTO/Tao Group) was one of those smartass child
prodigies you wanted to beat up at school. By age 20, he had already
been a commercial games developer for 5 years, and wrote some great
Amiga games. Being a smartass though, he saw the future, realised
nothing out there was ready for it, and dedicated the last ten years
of his life to making sure the human race was ready when the future
arrived."
 "The Amiga was special because it refused to settle for second best.
If something is worth doing, it is worth doing right, and the proof of
that is in the global following that it still has today. With the
nightmare of the past five years behind us, the Amiga is ready to push
out ahead again, and save the future from a muddled, poorly fitting,
frustrating PC enema. With the foundation that the Tao Group gives us,
we are ready to re-introduce the world to a novel computer concept -
fun."
 "We aren't stupid enough to think it's going to be easy," interrupts
Fleecy Moss, shoving McEwen to the ground and gagging him. "A lot of
people have been brainwashed by the advertisements and the slick
salespeople. However, the digital information revolution is all around
us, waiting to happen. Everyone can feel it, everyone wants to be a
part of it. Amiga is going to stick a pretty big bomb under that PC
logjam and blow it clean back to Redmond. Elegance, simplicity,
invisible and universal technology. Time to start smiling again."
 "We are happier than a crocodile at a waterpark to be working with
Amiga." said Francis Charig, CEO and international stud. "We are very
proud of what we have created in our garden shed. We could have sold
out long ago, but the market was crowded with companies doing that so
we decided to actual create a product and make it a good one. Now we
are finding that OEMs are seeing our product and getting even more
excited about it than we are ourselves; it almost makes the whipping
and torture we have had to inflict on our employees worthwhile. An
Amiga solution powered by Tao technology is a match made in heaven for
everyone."
{A posting to the Net from Fleecy Moss, with some helpful
clarifications. Brad}
In my trawling around the community hangouts,
I have come across several misconceptions, rumours,
and a lot of confusion. Whilst I can't hope to answer
everything, here are some things I want to set straight.
 0. Amiga will build a digital content universe. Digital
 content means anything composed of 0 and1 -
 applications, video, audio, games, emails, whatever.
 We will focus on 2 markets, the pathfinder market,
 for digital adventurers, power users, gamers,
 content creators, DTPers, artists, video ppl
 and those who refuse to define a computer as
 a digital appliance. Our second market will
 cocentrate on the Domestic Digital Habitat (DDH).
 1. If you are a personal computer person, there will
 be a personal computer second wave Amiga.
 2. We will support classic development in so much
 as we want to help users and developers transition
 to a new machine. That will be the total extent of our
 support for the classic machine. If this involves further
 AmigaOS releases, then so be it.
 3. We are targetting x86 and PPC for the first consumer
 release of Pathfinder products (if you are a personal
 computer person, this means you).
 4. We will do everything in our power (that doesnt bankrupt
 us or interfere with our primary goals) to ensure classic
 Amiga software runs on the new machine in some form or
 another.. The new Amiga product family (formerly called
 AQUA) will run natively and hosted. This is to create a large
 market fast for Amiga developers to profit from. For the first
 pathfinder release it will run hosted to see this market grow
 fast. We see one of our core duties as serving the developers.
 6. We are talking to the Phoenix Consortium about common
 interests.
 7. We have been contacted by QNX but currently have no plans
 to work with them.
 8. We will develop Amiga products for another market, the
 Domestic Digital Habitat (DDH) market. This markets will
 be kept separate but products will work together if the installer
 so desires it.
 9. There will be a new website and it will be public shortly. It has
 been tested on all browsers, Amiga and non Amiga, and given
 the compatibility problems between the implementations of open
 standards, our best effort has been made. The site will grow
 quickly and more information will be added. We want it to become a
 village where all Amigans can come to voice their opinions, chat,
 and travel off to different parts of the Amiga universe.
 a. A developer support manager has been selected and they are
 working on implementing the developer support program. This will
 be in place before the developer boxes are released.
 b. The developer boxes are specced out, we have contacted several
 whitebox manufacturers and we are building the distribution.
 c. Amiga will not provide dates until we have a product. We will
share
 timelines, but will not attach dates to them. Enough damage has
 already been done.
 d. We have had acceptances from 75% of our development team and
 their names and roles will be announced once we get back from
 training (before the end of the month).
 This mail can be redistributed without modification within the
community. As further questions and issues come up, we will attempt to
answer them.
 {The following exchange from a the Net may help ansewr questions
about Tao for many people. Our thanks to Fleecy Moss for posting the
answer to these questions. Brad.}
 >Hi fleecy, I was wondering if you could clear up a question that's
appeared >in various forums. Specifically, is Amiga going to use the
Elate RTOS as >the new AmigaOS kernel? It seems there's some confusion
over that. Your >comments that it will run on top of other OSes tend
to point towards the >J-Engine being more important. I guess I'm just
a little confused, or maybe >I don't understand the Elate RTOS very
well. :)
----
 Tao has a virtual processor system and a set of services that run
above it. You can call it an "OS" if you want, but the term is
increasingly irrelevant, as it is in KOSH. It can run natively, in
which case it is its own complete solution, or it can run on top of
other OSs, in which case the services are either provided by Tao, as
in the native version, directly to the VP, or they are "passed
through" to the host OS, and they provide the services.
 AQUA {Note: it's unlikely Amiga will use the AQUA name as Apple seems
to have grabbed it. Brad.} will offer a set of services accessed
through interfaces/APIs and developers will write to them no matter
what the situation. The situation itself can be AQUA running native,
which means only Amiga and Tao code, or it can be hosted, for instance
on Linux, or Windows even, in which case it can look a lot like an
application.
 No matter the situation, AQUA is still AQUA and developers and users
will see the same product. The only issue will be in speed, with the
native version running the fastest. For market reasons though we will
support it running hosted. In fact the first one or two releases will
most likely be hosted.
 The J-Engine is merely an example of how efficient the Tao products
are. Coding, initially will be in C, C++ (if you enjoy pain) and Java.
However, the tao ppl code in VP code directly, and it is so easy to do
and you get such screaming results with the tools that it may become
the preferred method for developers.
 It is far more than a Java support engine though.
 So to answer your question, we will concentrate on a full AQUA (tao
and amiga only) solution but we also have the ability to offer it
working on other OSs as well.
 Amiga will define and develop AQUA which defines how developers and
users access AQUA. What happens deep down can be different though.
Reading, England, January 10th 2000
 Infomedia Network, manufacturer of advanced consumer hardware
computing and entertainment devices announced today that it has
selected the Elate(RTM) Real Time Operating System and the intent(TM)
multimedia content platform by Tao Group for use in INFOMAX, the
company's next generation of advanced set-top boxes. Due to the high
performance and small footprint of Elate(RTM) and intent(TM) these
technologies are well suited for use throughout Infomedia's entire
product line of advanced set-top boxes, portable computers and
point-of-sale devices.
 "Infomedia is represents a new generation of hardware manufacturer,"
said Patrice Haftman, Executive Vice-President of Infomedia Network,
Inc. "Our approach is to address solutions and to design hardware in
accordance with the needs of maximizing the value of the software.
Consumers do not buy hardware for it's own sake; they buy it for what
it can do for them. Tao's Elate(RTM) combined with intent(TM) gives us
the greatest potential to enable even the most demanding Java(TM) and
multi-media applications in the embedded market."
 intent(TM) was launched at CES on 6th January 2000. Its portable
multimedia content platform includes its Java(TM) technology edition
(Tao is a Sun Java(TM) technology licensee) and its 2D graphics
libraries, world-class audio and 3D technologies are also shortly to
be made available as intent(TM) becomes one of the standard content
platforms for consumer products.
 Infomedia Network will be introducing the INFOMAX line of advanced
set-top boxes and portable computers in 2000. All will be enabled for
Java(TM) applications and secure electronic commerce via Elate(RTM)
and intent(TM).
 "Infomedia's clear focus and commitment has been to provide high
performance systems designed for the Consumer. This explains our
support at Tao for INFOMAX and why we are excited about the
partnership between the two companies", commented Francis Charig,
Chairman of Tao. "Infomedia's approach has been to integrate world
class components while working consistently within industry standards.
By taking Tao's technologies, Infomedia has armed itself with products
to make its appliances easier to use, lower cost and faster to market
than its competition."
 "Since we are focused on delivering applications, the operating
system is of key importance to us," said Haftman. "Tao has
consistently demonstrated that Elate and its Java(TM) Virtual Machine
are the fastest, most compact and robust, and Tao has been there to
support us during our product development phase. We look forward to
our continuing relationship with Tao as new ideas are turned into new
products."
                        COSA PROGRESS UPDATE
                          JANUARY 11, 2000
                  An Open Letter - January 11, 1999
                 By COSA President, Steve Crietzman
Introduction
 Our last open letter to the community talked about the status of our
negotiations with Tom Schmidt, and where we would be taking them after
the new year. Well, talk about bad timing! Just a week later, Amiga is
snapped up by Fleecy Moss and Bill McEwen in the form of Amino. Out
with the old, in with the new. And along with the new, comes new ideas
and plans for the future, and a fresh start.
 This begs the obvious question: How does this affect COSA and our
plans for the future of the AmigaOS?
 Well, in truth, the change in ownership of Amiga is entirely a good
thing for COSA. Our plans remain unaffected, and we continue to plan
and organise for the day when the classic Amiga operating system is
released as open-source, as we hope it will be. Fleecy, afterall, is
on record in numerous places supporting open source, including on
COSA's very own website, so it's hardly as if the new owner has
scupperred our original plans.
 If anything, the change is a positive one. Fleecy Moss has always
been very open and accessible, and we have found it an entirely
positive experience discussing the future of the AmigaOS with him. He
has been very receptive to the idea, and willing to discuss many
different possibilities.
COSA's Plans for the Future
 COSA is working on a number of different, but related and
inter-connected ideas to support the future of the classic AmigaOS.
While many are still in their infancy, they are already being to take
shape.
 Some of the major ones are discussed in the rest of this open letter,
but many more exciting plans and projects are being worked on behind
the scenes. These will be discussed in due course in future open
letters to the community.
 What sort of plans, you ask? Well, here's a clue.
 Imagine COSA providing Amiga-related products and services for the
Amiga community. Some of the revenue generated from sales of these
products and services could then be reinvested, and spent in any way
the community feels appropriate to aid the classic AmigaOS in it's
revival.
 COSA is already in negotiation and discussions with one large company
for access to their product's source code. That's a hint of the sort
of things you can expect to see in the future if COSA's plans are
successful, as we expect they will be.
 Think big name apps for AmigaOS and revived Amiga software, all being
made freely available on the AmigaOS, and you're on the right track.
 Beyond that, I'm afraid we're going to have to be a tease and give a
"no comment," but as we've always promised in the past - and always
kept - when the time is right, these plans will be discussed openly so
they can be debated. In the meantime, our negotiations are still
preliminary and we must remain quiet about them for the timebeing. I
hope you understand our reasons.
 In the meantime, think what we could do if we had a few dollars to
spend. Any suggestions are welcome. Details of our mailing list can be
found below, where suggestions are particularly welcome, but otherwise
feel free to e-mail any ideas, comments and suggestions of things you
would like to see, to president@amigakernel.org.
Developer Registrations Now Being Accepted
 As a result of the optimistic outlook, COSA are now focusing on the
hard work that lies ahead assuming, of course, the AmigaOS does indeed
go open-source. While it can't be entirely certain at this point, it
can never hurt to make plans. We are cautiously very optimistic about
our chances now, and are eager to get going - as are COSA's minature
army of users and developers.
To that end, COSA is now accepting registrations for developer status within
our open-source AmigaOS development team, led by Ian Parker, formerly of
Free Amiga/AMozillaX.
 If you are an Amiga developer, we would welcome your support and
contributions to the project. There is a need for a wide variety of
skills and experience in a project such as this. Those with kernel
experience, porting experience, a variety of languages including 68k
assembler and C/C++, GUI enhancements (ReqTools, MUI, ClassAct, etc),
writing "stability" or "improvement" patches for AmigaOS - improved
filing systems, etc. etc. are kindly requested to join our list, as
all help offered to this project will go a long way.
 Joining the Open Source AmigaOS Developer Base is simple. Just send a
blank e-mail to the following e-mail address:
amigaos-dev-subscribe@egroups.com, and you will be added to the
AmigaOS developer's discussion list, where developers can discuss and
debate future enhancements and additions to the AmigaOS and the
AmigaOS Kernel.
 For more information, you can visit the official Open AmigaOS
Development Website at http://www.amigakernel.org.
Your Feedback Is Welcome and Encouraged
 Feedback from the community on what you would like to see come from
future versions of the AmigaOS are also welcome. Indeed, they're
essential if developers are to know what features the community would
like to see integrated into future versions of the Amiga operating
system.
 Those members of the Amiga community who welcome the opportunity to
play a part in forging the future shape of AmigaOS are welcome and
encouraged to join COSA's Members' Mailing List, by sending a blank
e-mail to savetheamiga-subscribe@egroups.com.
 This mailing list has been created as a way for the community to
discuss and debate different ideas about the future of the AmigaOS as
Open Source, so that the community have a way to communicate their
feelings to those who will be managing the AmigaOS development
project. These ideas and comments can then be passed onto the
developers, who will integrate those suggestions into future versions
of the AmigaOS and kernel.
Conclusion
 COSA is very excited about the future of the Amiga, both of the
classic and the next-generation Amiga range. Our focus will of course
be entirely on the classic AmigaOS, while Amino and Phoenix, etc. will
be handling the next-generation Amiga systems and OS.
 It is COSA's goal, as it has always been, to have the AmigaOS (most
likely v3.1) released as open-source, radically improved and updated,
and ported to a wide variety of hardware platforms and CPUs. This
would dramatically expand the AmigaOS's existing userbase, and bring
fresh new ideas and talent into our community.
 COSA remain committed to our goal of overhauling and reviving the
classic Amiga, as an open-source OS environment, and bringing it into
the new millennium with new energy and life, with new ideas and
perspectives, and a fresh new start to give it a fighting chance in
the future.
 Our members and developers believe that the classic AmigaOS has
plenty of life left in it yet, and with a little work, stands a good
chance of making a comeback.
 We would welcome comments and feedback from the Amiga community,
especially those who would like to play a part in this process. Our
contact information is below. We want to thank the Amiga community for
their continuing support of COSA and for helping us come this far. The
Amiga community united can achieve so much, and we look forward to a
future where that talent can be unleashed, and the community can work
together as a team to take our OS into the new millennium - the next
generation.
Kindest Regards,
Steve Crietzman
President, COSA/Open Amiga.
 Thanks for being able to gain your attention.
 Due to massive piracy and other efforts to destabilize the Amiga
software market (not counting the subtile attempts to bash
competetitors with unfair methods) I've decided to put this site on
hold for a few days.
 This is just to show that it's in your own hands (customer is king)
to decide what should happen next. I personally will have to think
about that as well.
 In case I'll have to take different job oppurtunities, this will mean
ceasing or at least slow-down of the Amiga development. There of
course are people who would not mind about this, but I'm more
interested to hear what the rest is thinking (and how many they are).
 Let's call this a thinking pause
Short
------
 Frogger is the ultimate MPEG video player, with MPEG-2 layer support.
Frogger was oryginally relased by Miloslaw Smyk (thorgal@wfmh.org.pl),
recently, the development has been taken over by Sebasian
Jedruszkiewicz (bjsebo@jota.wi.tuniv.szczecin.pl) Additional
programming was made by Przemyslaw Gruchala.
Changes in this release
------------------------
v1.5
 - Added direct VideoCD support!!! (only in PPC version).
 - There is new mailing list, dedicated to all our programs
 (including Frogger,VisionFX and SoftCinema). To subscribe
 send blank message to: tvision-subscribe@egroups.com and
 then follow the instructions.
 - Fixed an ugly bug in P96 dislay code.
 - Removed BUFSIZE,FORCEAUDIO and AUTOEXIT parametters.
 - New parametter: FASTDIRECTCGFX. It will speed direct video memory
 access routines, but may be dangerous. I have not got single crash
 when using this option, but who knows? If there will be no problems
 with it repoted by users, this option will be enabled by default.
 - Fixed (at least I hope so) bug which caused Frogger to lock at
 end of some movies.
 - Reworked main loop, simplified messages received code. Also I have
 added some new keyboard commands.
 - Fixed slider code. It now 'almost' works, with sound disabled. Also
 Pause/Play now works.
 - +/- keys can now be used also in windowed mode to scale display.
 - switched to faster IDCT code in 68k version. Applied the same
 changes in PPC version. IDCT code is about 10% faster now, But it
 gives only 2-5% overall speedup.
 - Replaced calls to WritePixelArray with my own fast direct routines.
 Also scaling is now done by CPU; ScalePixelArray calls has been
 removed. Windowed mode is now really fast.
 - Added support for every possible pixel format supported by
cybergfx. However, I have tested only some of them. in case of
problems, please use VERBOSE option, send me output and (if it is
possible) make me a screenshot. Almost forgot - there is no conversion
for 8bpp cgfx screens. But who needs it? However, 8bpp mode works in
grey. Of course 8bpp mode works on AGA machines.
 - Updated Speed section of the guide.
 - Switched back to old pll calculation code. Frogger now needs latest
 ppc.library emulation (v0.7c) if you working under WOS.
 - version string is now y2k compatible ;)
 - It was impossible to exit (in some movies), when LOOP was used.
 Fixed.
 - Again I had to fix main loop, to be able to read multiple video
sequences movies. It now works ok. Thanks must go to Miroslaw
Bagrowski, for sending me CD with such a movie.
 - Changed filename format for saving iff images. it now looks like
this: basename.x, where x is frame number (6 digits:
000001,000002,etc.).
Amiga drivers for new Wacom graphics tablet "Graphire"
 We all know there's no such thing as an input device that lends
itself equally well to every application. Which is why H&P created
Graphire. Its mouse and pen combination means you always have the
right tool at hand. Graphire is the all-round solution, from
Web-browsing to retouching, from illustration to Office. Switch on to
the benefits of the unique Graphire set - for precise pointing and
clicking, for intuitive drawing, for sketching and writing.
 Finally Amiga fans can use the new graphics tablet. The driver
supports the pressure sensitive pen as well as the enclosed wireless
mouse and the finger-wheel.
 The "Graphire" can be used with any Amiga computer with external
keyboard (PS/2 connectors). Unfortunately all Amiga models besides
A4000 Desktop were delivered with normal DIN connectors you might need
an additional adapter set.
Prices
Graphire: 249 DM
PS/2 Adapter Set: 12 DM
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
 ShadowWorks Software regrets to announce the end of the NewsRog
project for the Amiga. NewsRog is an NNTP News client running on Amiga
personal computers.
 Unfortunately, due to a combination of factors which include the lack
of a market for Amiga software, obsolescent hardware, and a recent
increase in piracy and fraudulent credit card orders, it is no longer
financially possible to continue developing NewsRog. The last version
stands at 1.8b, and the update is available to all registered users
via the web page below:
     http://www.frii.com/~srk/ShadowWorks/Preview/NR.html
 ShadowWorks Software is proud to have pioneered a large number of
news client features that have yet to be duplicated in any other
software that we are aware of. We regret that it was not possible to
continue development of the software, since there was a great deal
more planned for the future.
 ShadowWorks Software wishes to thank all of our loyal customers who
have supported our attempt to bring the Amiga a world class NNTP news
client.
{The following was posted by Jim Drew to the Microcode Solutions
mailing list. Brad:}
 "Microcode Solutions is still working the PowerPC upgrade module for
FUSION (Amiga version). We have run into difficulties with compilers,
poor response from the customers (nearly 1,000 people pledged their
support, yet a little more than 200 people have actually ordered the
product), and many other unexpected problems along the way! These
factors have caused a significant delay in the release of FUSION-PPC.
We originally planned on hiring a few extra people to help develope
the emulation, however, due to the actual response we were not able to
do that and so far we have been doing everything ourselves! We are
extremely happy with the progress we have made thus far, and we know
that those people who did pledge their support will be happy too! We
ask that you please be patient and let us do our magic! :-)"
... "We are hoping to see it end January/beginning February".
Hello,
 This is the first time I have written an open letter to the
community, but this should breifly outline our plans for the future.
 First of all, we are pleased with how Wipeout 2097 is selling and I
would like to thank everybody who has bought a copy of the game! For
those of you who have been waiting for the new graphics cards to be
released to play it, your wait is almost over! So, as soon as you plug
it in, download the Wipeout 2097 demo and then go and buy the full
game!
 A lot of people have been asking about Space Station 3000. We
apologise to the long wait that people are having for this, but it is
a much bigger project than we have ever anticipated. But we hope to
bring an accurate release date soon as well as a brilliant game that
will keep you hooked!
 We intent to port more games from the PC. We will keep you posted on
this.
 We will also be porting Wipeout 2097 to the Apple Mac which should
provide a brilliant 3D racing experience for them! Just go and take a
look at it running on your friends Amiga's and you'll get a good idea
of what to expect!
 We will keep you posted with our current and future games
developments.
 I will be away between January 10th and March 31st and so I will not
be able to answer any e-mail sent directly to me. If you have any
queries, then use these e-mail addresses:
 The creator of Quake, John Carmack of id software's, has released
Quake sources and placed them on the Internet.
 According to John, "All of the Quake data files remain copyrighted
and licensed under the original terms, so you cannot redistribute data
from the original game..."
 This means you can create new Quake PPC, QuakeWorld and other
executables and spread the code without restriction, but not copy
Quake levels, textures, or other files found on the Quake CD.
 Further, if you wish to use any new Quake PPC executables tha become
available, you are required to own a copy of Quake. These restrictions
are minor and we expect a lot of Quake PPC activity in the Amiga
world.
AROS News
Aaron Digulla writes:
The WWW site has been reworked (a little!) :-) The design is still bad, but (most of) the links are ok again, the status is again updated daily, the code size graph looks a little better, and there is a news area on the main page.
In the code we currently work on the shell and the console.device (so a functional version of AROS Native/x86 can be expected soon). Additionally the speed issue with graphics has been solved (Quake in AROS under Linux with X11 now runs with 50fps, Quake directly under Linux/X11 runs with 60fps).
And it looks like there is a solution for the PR problem of AROS coming up.
Current status: 65% ready, 35 MB code. (Translation: mb)
REBOL: Manual Update, Book
The Rebol website was slightly optimized. And there are some news from REBOL.
The beta version of REBOL/View will be released soon. This is the GUI system for REBOL.
Carl Sassenrath was invited by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to the Pervasive Computing Conference, and will speek on REBOL focussing on distributed applications on January 26th.
On January 27th, 6PM PST, Carl Sassenrath will present REBOL to the TV audience live in The Screensavers by Ziff-Davis TV.
The REBOL module for the HTTP server Apache for Unix and Linux is in beta phase. Details can be asked from apachedev@rebol.com.
The User's Guide is released in version 2.2.0.
The January issue of Dr. Dobb's Journal carries a REBOL article by Michael Swaine. For the rework of his website he had a look at several scripting languages and opted for REBOL because it is easier to use than many others, and offers a good connection to the Internet. (Translation: mb)
If you are interested in viewing what the mugs look like,
check out: http://www.amiga-stl.com  Click on the
"Products" page. A picture of the mug is displayed.
These are five color high quality porcelain mugs with
mug, the design changes. The mugs are microwave safe.
They should not be washed in the dishwasher however.
  • XAD-System version4
    Dirk Stoecker writes us by e-mail:
    Version 4 of the archive extractor "xadmaster.library" is ready. This system allows to extract archives of different formats (LhA, LZX, RAR, Zip, ...). Additionally, disk archives (DMS, Zoom) can also be extracted, even enabling to extract files from such archives without needing a disk (or ram drive). The original archiver programs are no longer needed, but are replaced by internal subroutines.
    Right now, only the included shell tools fully support the system, but a Reaction GUI is in the works, modules for DirOpus and other programs are already existing or currently under development.
    The system can be downloaded from Aminet at util/arc/xadmaster.lha, and some additional informations are available at the title link. The antivirus tool CheckX is a good suplement (Aminet util/arc/CheckX.lha), checking whole hard drives and CDs including the file and disk archives with the help of XAD.
amiga-news.de
amiga-news.de now with Web Directory
After the well-respected CUCUG Amiga Web Directory has officially left its field of activity, a big gap had to be filled in the AMIGA-Online-World. Reason enough for the runners of the popular amiga-news.de-site and the well-known AMIGA- software-house Innovative to develop a new Web Directory, that has now been finalized.
The name of the baby is "amiga-news.de Web Directory" and is waiting to be fed with links, so that it can grow to the size of its recently retired big brother. Among the features of the proved CUCUG AWD, the amiga-news.de Web Directory offers new abilities: In future, the postal address, phone- number, the logo of the site and more will be provided for every entry. In order to keep the growing amiga-news.de Web Directory up-to-date, every website-runner in the database has the ability to change the respective data via a self-defined password. amiga-news.de and Innovative wish you many happy hours with the new Web Directory and declare it to be opened from today on. Individual Computers News
As reported yesterday, Individual Computers took over the hardware department of VMC.
By the way, now we know why the X-Surf was delayed for a week ;-). Jens Schönfeld sells his accident car to the highest bid, the car he crashed in in December 99. The pictures clearly document that Jens has a protective angel (and a good car) with him, since he went unscathed despite rolling about twice. (Translation: mb)
Andreas Kleinert writes:
I am looking for somebody who would coordinate a handful of people interested in doing independant benchmarks with the existing JFIF and PNG datatypes for 68k and PPC.
The problem with... erm... manufacturer-conducted benchmarks is, that they are not necessarily transparant for everyone in every detail. E.g. graphics from Aminet should be used for the tests, so everybody can test them himself. Additionally, different configurations could lead to different results, so several configs should be listed. I picture it like this:
  • people interested contact the coordinated
  • ideally, the coordinator should be able to offer a WWW site where results can be posted
  • ideally generated with a sample list of JPEG and PNG files from Aminet (different sizes, from pix/misc), PNG perhaps from the Cloanto package (AFAIK PPaint comes with several of them).
  • several configs should be used:
  • A1200 with 020/030 and 040, 060
  • A1200 with PPC
  • A4000 with 030 and 040, 060
  • A4000 with PPC
  • the results should be updated regulary (with new releases)
  • together with the results it should be listed:
  • system configuration (CPU, RAM, graphic board)
  • operating system (3.0, 3.1 - picDT V40, 43, 44)
  • datatypes config
Is somebody interested in organizing something like this? Please contact Andreas Kleinert. (Translation: mb)
VMC Network & Communication News
  • VMC will not produce any more hardware
    Since beginning of the new Year 2000 we decided not to produce or to develop hardware any more. The company VMC will focus on software developement and license the software products to third party companies.
  • HyperCOM 1 not produced any more, rights sold
    The - nearly legendary - HyperCOM 1 interface for the Amiga 1200 will not be sold any more by VMC. All rights for further production as well as an adapted software license have been sold to "Individual Computers", who will continue to offer this product with an excellent service under the name "Silversurfer".
  • HyperCOM Plus product line sold completely
    On January, 20th, the products of the HyperCOM plus product line have been sold. The complete stock and a license for further production has been transferred to "Individual Computers". However, VMC will continue the software care and ensure proper function in the future. We kindly ask you to direct any orders to Individual Computers or a distributor that carries their products.
  • New ISDN-Blaster-3 and VMCISDN on the way?
    We're currently continuing our work on the ISDN-software. The harddisk-crash last year has destroyed large parts of the sources that have still not been restored. We're currently checking the necessity of a new generation of ISDN cards that will blast everything you know from ISDN-adapters or modems.
    Please tell us what you think about a new ISDN product that perfectly fits the need of your Amiga, as we need your feedback to decide whether this can be profitable or not.
  • The most important software-news
    HyperCOM 1 and 3+ clockport-cards
    All HyperCOM drivers have been adapted to the new clock-ports that have been introduced by various vendors lately.
    1.) ACT's Amiga 1200 Zorro-IV Bus board
    This Zorro expansion for the A1200 offers you four independant clock-ports. Each of them can be used with any HyperCOM card now.
    2.) Individual Computers' X-Surf network card
    The X-Surf network card offers two independant clock-ports and a special 26-pin expansion port for HyperCOM 3+ modules. All ports of this card are supported in the new software, even if there is more than one network card present in the system.
    3.) Individual Computers' Amiga 600 adapter
    This special clockport adapter gives you the possibility to use A1200 expansions on the "pocket size" Amiga veteran. The connector is fully supported for all HyperCOM cards with clock-port interface. However, it will be a bigger problem to find space for anything else than a Silversurfer.
    4.) Iomega parallel ZIP-100 drive
    The long-ago announced drivers for IOMega's parallel port ZIP-100 drive has entered the last stage of the intense beta tests and shows unexpectedly high transfer rates with the HyperCOM parallel ports. In our tests, Diskspeed has measured up to 450KBytes per second repeatedly.
    We're calling all HyperCOM customers who own a ZIP-100 or the later ZIP-100Plus/250 to contact us for a public betatest during the next few days.
    5.) ScanQuix parallel scanner support for HyperCOM
    For the Scanquix software, a compatible API has been implemented into the HyperCOM drivers. However, it's not known when the first version of Scanquix will be published that makes use of this API. With every single customer who will contact the Scanquix author Andreas Günther and tell him that he's willing to pay for such a software, Andreas' motivation will be increased a lot.
Best regards,
Yours Harald Frank, VMC (Translation: mb)
Boston, MA, January 20th, 2000
NTRU Cryptosystems, Inc. has announced the availability of the
Tumbler(TM) software toolkit implementing NTRU, the world's fastest
secure public key cryptography system. The Tumbler(TM) toolkit was
developed by Tao Group. Tumbler(TM) delivers encryption, decryption,
authentication and digital signature features at speeds over 100 times
faster than alternative systems, including those from RSA (Nasdaq:RSAS)
and Certicom (Toronto:CIC), at equivalent security levels.
"The need for public key security is moving from traditional Information
Technology (IT) applications to mass market consumer electronics
devices, such as wireless telephones, portable music players and digital
televisions." said Scott Crenshaw, NTRU Vice President of Business
Development. "These applications have vastly different requirements than
IT applications. Solutions for consumer devices must be fast,
inexpensive to implement in hardware, and consume minimal power. All of
the existing technologies, including Elliptic Curve Cryptosystems (ECC),
are just too large and slow. NTRU delivers the ideal solution for the
emerging consumer electronics market."
Key benefits of Tumbler(TM) over the competition include:
  Fast performance, even on low speed processors
  Small memory footprint
  Low cost to implement in hardware (fewer gates required)
  Increased server performance (supports more users with fewer servers)
  Reduced battery consumption
Francis Charig, Chairman & Chief Executive of Tao Group said "Tumbler
incorporates unique technologies from both NTRU and Tao. Our development
team has worked with NTRU to develop successfully a toolkit which can
resolve many of the security issues faced by digital appliances on
mobile, home and professional networks."
The technology in the Tumbler(TM) toolkit is ideally suited for
applications where high performance, high security and low power
consumption are required, such as wireless data communications, Internet
music and video distribution, micro payments, e-commerce and embedded
devices.
Developed by a team of world renowned mathematicians and cryptographers,
NTRU provides the fastest and most efficient public key cryptography
solution - at all security levels. Unlike other technologies, NTRU
resists parallel processing attacks. Likewise, its disposable key
technology allows frequent public key changes. Those properties
dramatically reduce the risk of power analysis, timing attacks, and the
danger of security breaches due to misplaced, lost, or intercepted keys.
Perhaps most important of all, NTRU offers high levels of security
without the performance sacrifices inherent in systems such as RSA and
ECC. The NTRU technology has been extensively studied by both the
academic and commercial cryptographic community. Complete technical
details, including a tutorial, are available on NTRU's web site at
www.ntru.com/tech.learning.htm.
NTRU's unprecedented performance advantages open up new options for
security. Its super fast key generation allows the encryption of every
transaction with a different public key. Disposable key use enables
completely new paradigms in encryption - for example, encrypting every
second of a music clip with a different key. That means, on a
three-minute clip, the time and cost of breaking the encryption increase
by a factor of 180. Disposable keys also allow every wireless data
transaction to be encrypted with a different independent key. Unlike
other systems that claim to generate multiple encryption keys to protect
media, NTRU disposable keys are completely independent of one another,
dramatically enhancing security. Disposable keys will become
increasingly necessary as insecure channels carry valuable data.
At the heart of NTRU is a collection of mathematical algorithms based on
manipulating lists of very small integers. This allows NTRU to achieve
high speeds with the use of minimal computing power. NTRU is the first
practical and secure public key cryptosystem not based on factorization
or discrete logarithm problems, which require the use of extremely large
integers or complex structures. The computations performed in NTRU
involve simpler processes that can be performed very quickly even on
inexpensive 8-bit processors at security levels equivalent to other
public key cryptosystems.
IRC-Log - LiveChat with TAO-Group and Fleecy Moss - 19.01.2000
<[breed-away]> ok everyone be patient, we just waiting for the guys to rejing :)
<sNAK3^RP> i wonder how many ppl are not using there normal nicks???
<sNAK3^RP> lol...u can imagine how many arnt
<[breed-away]> I Would like to welcome Francis Charig and Fleecy Moss to the room
<[breed-away]> plus other members of Tao group watching :)
<[breed-away]> Are you ready to get started Francis?
<situation> Here we go...
<Senex> 1) One thing "Amiga Aurora" (my suggestion for the new OS's name) MUST have: Screens - so how about Screens, Datatypes, FFS-support? 2) Why not calling the product family just "Amiga", i.e. "Amiga Aurora", "Amiga XYZ", etc.? GA
<Charig> We will be working with Amiga, taking a close look at the existing features and making sure that the new system will have the same or greater functionality.
<Netsplit^> when can we expect to be reaching for our checkbooks, to buy something new from u guys & when might it be. GA
<Charig> Bill's in the room and Fleecy can't talk! :) Announcements on this will come when the product is ready to ship. No more hype!
<Urizen> Will you support hardware-accelerated OpenGL? GA
<Charig> intent(TM) supports hardware accelerated 2D and 3D graphics. As for the 3D APIs that sit on top, we encourage all 3D APIs to be ported across. Have you heard of Renderware? :)
<tOmAsH-BB> What is the real cooperation level of TAO and Motorola? I mean, does Motorola want to use your (Amiga?) software, and vice versa?
<Charig> It is publicly known that Motorola is releasing connected appliances utilising Tao's software (e.g. Timeport P1088 smart phone, see announcement 8.1.00)
<dreamstar> Q: will Elate be used as the next generation OS of future Amigas? GA
<Charig> Specifics on this will announced shortly. :)
<Firebird^> Hello Mr. Charig, my feeling about Gateway 2000's (Old Amiga Inc.) plans for using Linux as the OS of the new machines is that it would be a mistake. It wouldn't be an Amiga, just a Linux box with the Amiga name slapped on it. I hope this isn't going to be planned. ;)
<Charig> That was a statement!
<Elektro> fleecy: please describe the new amiga Computer(!) thnx :) GA
<Charig> "It's lovely and cuddly" says Fleecy
<sNAK3^RP> Q: well there be a Os4.0 chipset...GA
<Charig> If you mean, "a new chipset for a new Amiga" then the answer is that the new Amiga has been designed to be hardware independent, hence Tao.
<Charig> This is why we are partnering together.
<Charig> Also I want to add a couple of other points.
<sNAK3^RP> Q: will we still have Os as such...GA
<Charig> The main objective today is to correspond about intent(TM) rather than have extrapolations about the precise configurations of the new Amiga.
<TheB> What is the Amiga "history" that TAO has? It doesn't seem very comforting that you have to take a look at the Amiga to figure out what it's about. (As for Firebird's statement.. that's true of any new "Amiga".) And as for this 'hardware independent' Amiga.. is that like java? :) GA
<Charig> Have you looked at our website to see what technology we offer?
<amiga-news_de> 1st question: TAO: It was reported that you helped in the Amiga buyout. How much of this was "your idea", means, are you tech supplier, partner, or even more? 2nd question: Will there be free Tao and/or Amiga documentation, for the "just curious"?
<situation> In future, One question at a time, please, we have a lot of people wanting to ask questions
<fleecy> We talked to Tao when looking for partners and got so horny about each other that Tao dropped us some VC names and made introductions and recommendations about Amiga.
<fleecy> Tao is our foundation supplier. Amiga will be providing all the support. Anyone who signs up to develop will have access to full APIs.
<Swarfega> Apple's new OS X has a lot of it's GUI done with vectors, which allows easy scaling, rotating, etc. of pretty much anything on the screen. Will that sort of thing be possible with new Amigas (or is the OS extensible enough to allow people to write their own interfaces)? GA
<charig> We are not intending to have matrix style transformations embedded in the lowest layers of the graphics subsystem as this inherently slows down all other graphics functions.
<charig> Such vector type operations are available higher up.
<charig> ...where they should be.
<charig> Remember... elegance through simplicity and performance.
<dark4ces> would there be any performance benefit to writing code in VP assembler rather than higher-level languages? GA
<charig> There will be the same benefit that writing an assembler over high level languages offers in any other environment.
<charig> You trade off slightly higher development effort in order to gain tighter, faster code.
<charig> Remember that writing in VP gives you the advantages of assembler but no portability drawback.
<sNAK3^RP> monolog: rendering will be faster:))))
<AmigaDragon> (1) Will the new system (HDW or SW) have equivalent (or higher) filesystem support such as CrossDOS/CrossMAC including Windows longfilenames? (2) Fleecy, will we see, sometime in the not too distant future, AmigaOS (classic) Open source? GA
<fleecy> Me and 4 of the dev team have been VP for 2 days now and it's nothing like traditional assembler, more like C with the crap bits taken out. You'll find out soon.
<situation> People, One question at a time, please
<fleecy> Answer to AmigaDragon - Q1 - You can mimic multiple file systems + they also have their own high performance native file system.
<fleecy> Amigadragon (2) - our lawyers are looking into it but it is a much more complicated web than anybody could guess.
<TheRiley> if someone wanted to build an "Amiga"-desktop based on, say, the POP-standard, and use your new OS , would you support it (and if, how)? could the new OS run on phase5 Amirage for example? (ok, that's 2 questions, but they overlap so much that they are basically one :))
<charig> 1. Yes. 2. Bill was talking to Gerald Carda yesterday. :)
<HaXoR^> Mr Charig / Fleecy, is it just a coincidence this conference happening immediately before the transmeta cpu lauch(5pmGMT)? GA
<charig> Yes. We are hardware independent.
<Cpt_Hbl^> How long has Amino/Amiga and Tao been co-operating ? We know all about Fleecy/Bill/Petro but how does Toa feel about Amiga community? GA
<[breed-away]> Yup, it was supposed to happen yesterday.....
<charig> We have a large amount of respect for the Amiga community which is why we have been working cooperatively with Bill and Fleecy for some months, determined to make this really happen.
<BJS> The Time of Homecomputers of the 80's r over, i mean, what does a CHRP board with an strange OS with Amiga in common, other than the name, it's just marketing. and the things done from 1994 till now r only done for the existing userbase and they shrunk, how will u encourage others to buy amiga?
<charig> By providing the best platform.
<Thy> Do you plan to do advertising ? Considering that it should be worldwide, can you afford that ? To have the best machine is not enough if nobody knows that. GA
<charig> Yes. We will be doing advertising (Tao and Amiga) with our partners.
<Senex> How many developers are working currently on "Amiga Aurora" (i.e. the new OS <g>), and how many of them are from Amiga, how many from Tao? GA
<charig> Amiga has a dozen engineers growing, Tao has 60 + plenty of blue chip partners.
<RUiNa> Q: Please take this all as one general question about marketing. With consoles and settop boxes allowing more ability and connectivity, and with super low pc prices, do you feel we'll compete with these pricewise or are you moving towards some other newer market? we all know marketing was the original amiga downfall. is the marketing planned and being taken care of by pro's? GA
<charig> Yes. We like to call them "hookers".
<FryG_away> Q:will there be any new updates for WB3.5 ? GA
<fleecy> We have a transitional plan for the Classic that we will announce with our partners.
<Nico_Barbat_amigaOS> Francis, Bill told on the press-conf. that you are an long-time Amiga-fan - in which effect could this be useful for the *developer* group? WHO is actually working on the new OS? GA
<charig> I'll take those in reverse order.
<charig> We already have the foundation layer. I'm not going to discuss o/s specifics today. The entire Tao engineering staff is working on software which will be utilised by the Amiga community.
<charig> Remember that it is not just that we are fans, we also have major Amiga engineering history at Tao.
<sNAK3^RP> Q: in what year will we see the Adverts or price lists.amiga has NEVER died..GA
<charig> This year.
<|MB|> Hello. I am a convinced amigaist, but in what this new repurchase is it different from the precedents? How long will last your new development? GA
<charig> What?
<Szczepan-BlaBla> Does new Amiga (or what is named) will have full support for "Classic" Amiga apps running just like normal one ? I mean that I can use any current program to edit/view/etc. any file from disk (not like it is in UAE). GA
<charig> Announcement soon.
<ioni> Will there be PCI, AGP, USB, etc. ports in the 'new Amiga' ? And support for them ? ga
<charig> We will support all significant hardware standards.
<Reticuli> fleecy stated earlier: "anyone who signs up to develop will have access to full APIs"... The API's WON'T be public domain? Is this wise? The Amiga excelled because of the back bedroom developers who just decided to have a quick dabble one night and has survived years in the wilderness because anyone could program it without having to become a formal developer. Or did I misinterpret that answer? GA
<charig> You are assuming that the development kit is going to be expensive... it won't be.
<CraiK> Q: I have got several commodore amiga computers including amiga 500, 1200, and CD-32, along with commodore 64. All i want to know is, what do you expect the future of the AMIGA world will be like (in general)? bright or dark? I just want you to make me feel comfortable about the AMIGA's future. I come from the middle east, btw just to let you know that we also DO care about the MIGGY ;) and thank you very much for your time, sirs. GA
<^PaulaCIA^> CraiK Commodore are dead, Amiga is owned by Gateway 2000 for more info go to www.amiga.de !
<[breed-away]> heh
<situation> oops, I think your bot needs updating, breed
<[breed-away]> eck, must update Paula!!!
<[breed-away]> slaps Gateway 2000 about a bit
<Erchin> lol
<DanDude2> hehehe
<GuardianBOB> heh heh yes you should.
<JoeSchmo> MUHAHAHAHA
<Gaijin^> lol.. yeah :P
<charig> Of course it is going to be bright. Tao's heavily in demand with so many global consumer electronics companies.
<jws72512a> Will new Amiga/Tao OS System run on IBM PC box? GA
<charig> We regard the Amiga as a fundamental part, not just of our strategy but the whole future of digital content.
<situation> Okay, I've not asked a question yet, so here goes... How confident are you at taking on the industry giants, Microsoft, Intel, et al... and winning?
<charig> Tao is already becoming very successful and we know that the co-operation will accelerate our success, Amiga's and the community.
<sNAK3^RP> well guys thx for <maybe> given us some hope...we look forward to new things......
<charig> Thank you and Goodnight from Reading England :)
<situation> Thanks very much for giving us your time
<situation> round of applause, please
<[breed-away]> I wish to thank Francis Charig, Fleecy Moss, Bill M and the other guys from Tao for turning out..
<Erchin> many many thanks to everyone
<[breed-away]> im sorry to those who didnt get there questions answered
<situation> Thanks everyone for being so patient... we ran this whole system by hand, 'cause we didn't have time to set up proper scripts (Translation: mb)
clickBOOM insane?
clickBOOM makes a weird offer: Those who mark themselves as complete clickBOOM and Amiga fan, having a tattoo with the words "clickBOOM" or "Amiga" or a logo made, get all clickBOOM games for free. Contact with clickBOOM should be made before getting the tattoo done.
I can only hope this is a joke, because such offers are very questionable in my eyes. (ps) (Translation: mb)
3SAT - Neues
3SAT Computermagazin Neues mentions Amiga
The computer magazine "NEUES" by 3SAT (German TV channel), known for really good investigations and matter-of-fact reports is becoming more and more liked by Amiga users, because, for a positive change, "NEUES" does not ignore the Amiga in their reports. On January 17th, there was a report about the sellout and the cooperation with the TAO Group. Citing:
"There are news to rell about Amiga, too. After Gateway sold its Amiga share in December, the company has entered a strategic partnership with the british TAO Group. They want to develop a new Amiga Operating System together. Currently Tao offers four operating systems, with the realtime OS Elate being especially interesting. Elate is platform independant, no matter if Windows or Linux, and offers multi processor support. One can be looking forward to how Amiga might profit from this cooperation." (Translation: mb)
Hi Everyone,
Just to let you know we have got a live chat with Tao Group and
hopefully fleecy to discuss the Amiga and what we feel should be done.
Tao dont have that much a roll in the development but they do have
some say and are very intrested to hear the views of the Amiga public
to help them take the correct road.
Francis Charig, Chairman and Chief Exec of Tao Group has confirmed
this with me and seems like a really down to earth guy and very sincere
in what he wants to do with the Amiga, he said he will ask Fleecy to
attend as well.
So got some ideas? questions? or just want to sit and watch? then
come to #AmigaGames on IRC Dalnet.  I will be confirming the live chat
with Francis a hour before we go ahead to make sure things are ok, if we
have to postpone it, there will be a new date given in the topic.
If you have a JAVA client you can come directly to
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Way/9376/irc/chat.html
If you are on a Amiga you will need to download Amirc from Aminet and
log onto a dalnet server.
amiirc.lha
The best server to use is irc.dal.net on port: 7000 group: 01
If you are on a PC you can get Mirc from http://www.mirc.com
The Live Chat will be on 19/01/00 at 16.00 GMT
The Chat will be moderated you need to msg a active op to be able to
ask a question No more than 2 questions per go
Usuall IRC rules apply, swearing, name calling, flooding will end in
a ban.
Hope to see you all there
Best Regards
John Porter
Meeting with Bill McEwen in Frankfurt
Bill McEwen, President and CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Amiga Incorporated, explained his vision for the future of the Amiga on January 17th.
At the first meeting after the Amiga takeover by Bill McEwen and Fleecy Moss, mainly hard- and software developers were present as well as representatives of the two remaining German Amiga print magazines and of course myself for amiga-news.de.
The meeting was intended for getting to know each other. Bill McEwen is not a no-name, but so far he was rather behind the scenes at Amiga Inc.
However, he brought some goodies with him to Frankfurt. He explained the partnership with Tao, and that their OS will be part of the new Amiga generation. He assured that not only a developer box specification will be released in February, but also that the necessary software will be offered for free download at the same time.
For the late summer, the introduction of the first consumer system is scheduled. The exact specification of this model is not yet decided upon, and depends on the results of his numerous talks with developers during his trip to Europe.
All in all, a beginning for the next - and hopefully successful - attempt to revive the Amiga. At any case, Bill McEwen earned broad support on the Frankfurt meeting. (Translation: mb)
CSC contest over
After 62 days and 98% keys done, the CSC key has been cracked. The correct key was found by a Sparcbox (with Solaris) in the USA. The Amiga team has done 4 million key blocks with 228 keys each, for a total of 1.11% of the keyspace.
Now all Amiga users who participated in the CSC contest should return to calculate RC5 blocks. Every block counts... ;-) (Translation: mb)
MeKa pictures
Hosted by the Fachhochschule Karlsruhe (Technical College), the yearly "Meeting Karlsruhe" took place last weekend, for the seventh time and with about 150 participants. I was overwhelmed by the really phantastic organisation of this huge meeting. There were 5 rooms with 30-35 computers each completely networked. The Fachhochschule provided a free 10 MBit connection in addition to their rooms, which led to great download rates. Thanks to the ATM systems from HiLan, there even where 155 MBit available locally.
The hosts really had planned for everything. There was a seperate sleeping room where exhausted visitors could take a nap. A cinema was available for relaxing, and all the time fresh breadrolls, coffee, tea and other non-alcoholic beverages were offered; a really well working Internet Pizza service made the offer complete.
I had many interesting conversations, met many, many really nice people, and left with the wish to return for all three days next year. I really enjoyed myself, but I did regret not having brought my computer. I want to say thanks for the invitation, and congratulate the hosts on their excellent work.
HTMLview.mcc v12.6 released
Allan Odgaard has released version 12.6 of his MUI class for viewing HTML documents on January 16th.
The class currently supports the major part of the HTML 4.0 standard as defined by the W3C. According to Allan Odgaard, the class is more precise than many browsers, and very well suited e.g. for e-mail programs wanting to display HTML - especially since the class is working really fast. You shouldn't forget, however, that it is a prototype undergoing many changes. E.g. it is being worked upon Style Sheets support. The release of a Style Sheet supporting version will take some time, however.
With the included demo program, the class can be used as "offline browser". Without written permission of the author, however, it must not be used on CD-ROMs etc.
The class offers the following features:
  • Incremental site buildup. The parsing is done by a seperate process, so the MUI program can still react to user input while a HTML document is parsed.
  • Progressive drawing of graphics. Currently GIF, GIFAnim, JPEG, and PNG are supported by modules.
  • Text can be marked and copied to Clipboard.
  • Full text search.
  • Comprehensive HTML support. Tables with background graphics, frames, forms etc.
  • Very fast.
  • and more...
Known bugs:
  • Text outside of ... is not displayed.
  • Entities (e.g. &) without trailing ; are not recognized.
  • The Floyd-Steinberg algorithm for dithering pictures tends to handle pictures differently towards the borders. This can lead to patterned backgrounds looking like there are lines between patterns.
  • The datatype wrapper for decoding pictures seems to work only with the P96 picture.datatype.
If you are interested in programming a Flash viewer, RealAudio plugin etc., contact Allan Odgaard.
Jim in c.s.a.g.
3 Amiga advertisments from 1989
On his homepage, Jim offers three Amiga commercials from 1989 for download. The three ads, described as very well made, are tailored to the US market, and have been broadcasted on MTV in 1989.
However, so far the commercials are only available in RealVideo (.rm) format; a format without an Amiga player being available so far. Additionally, single pictures and the sound in .wav format are available, and Jim is interested in offering the animations in a different format. He is looking for tips which format is best suited for the Amiga.
DeepSilence extra games wanted
We are looking for extra games for the action Manga RPG DeepSilence, that can be played within the game in some kind of game arcade.
DeepSilence uses CyberGfx, so it can be played on the Workbench, too. 90% of the graphics are traced. The game will offer 20 big maps, over 30 different weapons and spells, light and nebula effects, non-linear storyline, action sequences and more.
System requirements: Amiga, 68020, AGA or gfx card, 8 MB FastRAM, 2x CD-ROM. According to the readme file, a 68020 reaches 30 pics/sec (resolution 320x256x8).
The game is announced for first quarter 2000. A 5 MByte demo file with informations, graphics and a large animation is on Aminet.
Sylvio K. writes:
Hello you private programmers out there!
I know there are many programmers out there just waiting to be discovered! We offer you the chance!
Subject: We are currently working on an Action-Manga-RPG for Amiga! (Info on Aminet /game/demo/Deepsilence.lha, Deepsilence.readme) and are planning to put numerous games in one level! It's like you are in a game arcade, with many different games to play... that's where we need you! Send us your games! No matter how simple they are! (Please, not that simple!)
Following requirements have to be met, however:
  • They have to be adapted, so they really look like started from a game machine - so no advertising!
  • If it requires AGA, it has to run on CyberGfx, too!
  • They should be running on AGA, so no graphic errors!
This is your chance!! Take it!
Mail to: Mangaclub@freenet.de (answers usually on weekends)
Bye!
CD32 Alliance online again
The CD32-Alliance pages, maintained by Thorsten Schölzel, are online again, and in a new design.
The website is about the CD32 game console, which Commodore released 1993, and its expansions (MPEG module, SX-1, SX32, CD32-joypad etc.). Aside from posting detailed information, the CD32 Alliance wants to make new software available for the CD32, and offers their help for this. A CD32 version of the shareware game Sharks is announced for a self-cost price of 10-12.5 Euro. A screenshot is available from the news area.
The website currently offers a news section, information about and pictures of the CD32, a games area planned to offer a complete overview over all CD32 games in the future, opinions about the console and more. A developer area has been announced. (Translation: mb)
Melody Z2
Kato Development writes on their own website:
December last year, a limited number of almost-finished Melody Z2 were offered for a special price. The demand was incredibly high, so we wanted to produce some new. Sadly, some of the parts are very hard to get, or completely unavailable. So we cannot produce more Melody Z2 in this form. (Translation: mb)
Motorola investing in Tao
Motorola is investing in Tao Group Ltd., and is planning to use Taos Virtual Processor and the Java-based OS technology in products of their own (e.g. mobile communication, Internet). An important issue for portable applications is the virtual code needing less memory than native code, despite being executed fast. With a RISC CPU, the memory factor is 1.4 to 1.7.
Charig: "We currently work with a number of partners from consumer electronics. Motorola is not the only important partner, but the first investor." (Translation: mb)
Hyperion Software looking for programmers
For upcoming projects, Hyperion Software is looking for a programmer.
Experience in C/C++ and Warp3D and, ideally, OpenGL are required. Experience in PowerPC programming (WarpUP) would be a bonus, but are not required.
Hyperion Software offers you the possibility to work on one of the best games to be released for Amiga. And this work is of course payed for.
If you are interested, contact BenH@hyperion-software.de. (Translation: mb)
Fleecy Moss in a newsgroup
Setting some things straight
* Forwarded from "Team Amiga" Mailinglist
* Originally from: fleecy moss (fleecy@earthlink.net)
In my trawling around the community hangouts,
I have come across several misconceptions, rumours,
and a lot of confusion. Whilst I can't hope to answer
everything, here are some things I want to set straight.
0. Amiga will build a digital content universe. Digital
   content means anything composed of 0 and1 -
   applications, video, audio, games, emails, whatever.
   We will focus on 2 markets, the pathfinder market,
   for digital adventurers, power users, gamers,
   content creators, DTPers, artists, video  ppl
   and those who refuse to define a computer as
   a digital appliance. Our second market will
   cocentrate on the Domestic Digital Habitat (DDH).
1. If you are a personal computer person, there will
   be a personal computer second wave Amiga.
2. We will support classic development in so much
   as we want to help users and developers transition
   to a new machine. That will be the total extent of our
   support for the classic machine. If this involves further
   AmigaOS releases, then so be it.
3. We are targetting x86 and PPC for the first consumer
   release of Pathfinder products (if you are a personal
   computer person, this means you).
4. We will do everything in our power (that doesnt bankrupt
   us or interfere with our primary goals) to ensure classic
   Amiga software runs on the new machine in some form or
   another.. The new Amiga product family (formerly called
   AQUA) will run natively and hosted. This is to create a large
   market fast  for Amiga developers to profit from. For the first
   pathfinder release it will run hosted to see this market grow
   fast. We see one of our core duties as serving the developers.
6. We are talking to the Phoenix Consortium about common
   interests.
7. We have been contacted by QNX but currently have no plans
   to work with them.
8. We will develop Amiga products for another market, the
   Domestic Digital Habitat (DDH) market. This markets will
   be kept separate but products will work together if the installer
   so desires it.
9. There will be a new website and it will be public shortly. It has
   been tested on all browsers, Amiga and non Amiga, and given
   the compatibility problems between the implementations of open
   standards, our best effort has been made. The site   will grow
   quickly and more information will be added. We want it to become a
   village where all Amigans can come to voice their opinions, chat,
   and travel off  to different parts of the Amiga universe.
a. A developer support manager has been selected and they are
   working  on implementing   the developer support program. This will
   be in  place before the developer boxes are released.
b. The developer boxes are specced out, we have contacted several
   whitebox manufacturers and we are building the distribution.
c. Amiga will not provide dates until we have a product. We will share
   timelines, but will not attach dates to them. Enough damage has
   already been done.
d. We have had acceptances from 75% of our development team and
   their names and roles will be announced once we get back from
   training (before the end of the month).
This mail can be redistributed without modification within the community.
As further questions and issues come up, we will attempt to answer them.
