Passione Amiga & Amiga Documents (ANF)

Trevor Dickinson has already acquired co-ownership of AmigaOS 4 in 2019
Amiga Documents, the documentation of the recent Amiga company history, which has been continuously expanded by an anonymous author for 15 years, has been supplemented by a completely new section: The article Hyperion Entertainment's Silent Puppeteer attempts to prove that Robert Trevor Dickinson of A-EON has been financing the legal disputes with which Ben Hermans (Hyperion) has been trying to secure ever more extensive rights to AmigaOS for a decade and a half.
Three new internal documents are made public for the first time: First the license agreement of March 2019 between Dickinson and Hyperion, in which the A-EON owner licenses ExecSG, which he already acquired in February 2017 according to the agreement, to Hyperion - for a price of 10 euros per copy of AmigaOS 4 sold. The price was determined as a share of the standard [AmigaOS 4] license fees of 60 euros and will be automatically corrected accordingly should Hyperion's pricing for AmigaOS 4 change.
In a second contract between Hyperion and Dickinson from August 2019, the latter acquires "co-ownership" of all components of AmigaOS 4 owned by Hyperion for EUR 47,500. He is also to be granted access to all source code immediately upon receipt of payment. However, Dickinson can only use his newly acquired rights if Hyperion ceases to exist or ends its business activities with regard to AmigaOS 4 - bankruptcy or liquidation are cited as examples.
(Editor's note: It is unclear to us which rights Dickinson actually acquired in August 2019. Hyperion only has a license to distribute the compiled binaries for the vast majority of AmigaOS 4 components. The only component known to us that is actually owned by Hyperion is the GUI toolkit "Reaction", which was acquired in May 2019.)
A secret agreement dated December 2010 between Ben Hermans, Robert Trevor Dickinson and the former A-EON financier Anthony Moorley is now also public. It appears to confirm the allegations of embezzlement that Dickinson has been making for a long time, most recently also publicly: Ben Hermans undertakes here to repay money that he owes A-EON - including (quote) "amounts that have been removed by him from the bank accounts of A-EON Technology without authority" - and to withdraw from the company.
Editor's note: In addition to publishing these new documents, the original article primarily attempts to prove Dickinson's long-standing financial support for Hyperion, especially during the two major court cases. The text was written by Nicola Morocutti and was originally published in the Italian print magazine Passione Amiga. Morocutti, who worked full-time for Mike Battilana in 2007/2008, formulates some of his statements here as if he were still employed by Hyperion's opponent and makes several unsubstantiated claims. We have therefore refrained from summarizing his statements on this topic, even though they correspond in several respects with the information we have received.
We have asked the parties involved for statements and will submit them later if necessary. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Music: Breakcore album "Get Out Of My House"
Mr. Roboto is a member of the Australian demo group System Of Sound. After releasing his best-of album Goat Cuts at the end of 2023, which covers the years from 2007 to 2023, a new album with three fresh tracks is now available on Bandcamp for around 60 cents, which the artist himself assigns to the Breakcore genre. He used an Amiga 600 and FS-UAE, which emulates the A1200/030. On the software side, OctaMED SoundStudio as well as ProTracker 2.3d and Hippoplayer were used to test whether the tracks were played correctly.
In the mid-90s, he bought his own A500 with A590 and began to familiarise himself more intensively with the operating system. He had been interested in punk rock since his early teens. He not only listened to it, but also played it himself. He recalls to us: "So in mid-highschool I was able to convince my parents that me having some guitar lessons might be a worthwhile investment, and after a few lessons my teacher suggested to me that my progress would really benefit from me getting myself a drum machine. And I thought to myself for one thing I am a young teenager with no job and limited income and for another, I do have a computer in my bedroom, and a copy of OctaMED version 5 which I got free on the cover of CU Amiga magazine, so I could just use that instead. And when one composes a drum beat and a bassline then logically one might find themselves with something that bears at least a passing resemblance to drum'n'bass music, which I did, despite having had no real exposure to the genre at this point in time."
His first collection of songs, which he released in limited numbers on burnt CDs, was at the end of 1998, when he used the then rare and expensive CD burner at his
secondary college to burn about two dozen copies: "I cannot recall the exact title of this collection, nor do I have a copy myself, it was rather, shall we say, "experimental" in style. Somebody might even have a copy of it buried deep in their personal collection, but otherwise I would have to say that these are lost to time. The next releases on CD would have come in 2001, when I purchased an 8x speed CD burner of my own. I was performing punk-jazz-electronic fusion with a group called The D.Z's and released a collection of the less awful bits from our many jam sessions on a CD entitled Music For Pleasure Classics - this collection of songs is also sadly lost to time. Also in that year, around the same time I released a collection of songs made with a friend on their Pentium II PC using Buzz under the group name Dead Punx. This collection of songs can be found online today on the System of Sound Bandcamp page..." (dr)

Retro Computer Festival 2024 to be held on 13 and 14 April in Paderborn
The Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn is the largest computer museum worldwide and a vibrant venue for events. The 6,000 square metre exhibition space presents 5,000 years of the history, present and future of information technology, from the emergence of numbers and writing in 3,000 BC to the computer age of the 21st century.
On 13 and 14 April, the Retro Computer Festival 2024 will take place at the HNF, jointly organised by the HNF and the Dortmund Retro Computer Treffen. Retro computers spanning from the C64 and Ataris to the Amiga and many other long-forgotten hardware and software can be experienced live on this day. Over 50 exhibitors are expected, who will not only present their treasures, but will also be happy to exchange ideas with visitors and give tips on repairs. The main theme of this RCF is the graphical user interface, which was first available 50 years ago on the Xerox Alto. In addition to the exhibition, lectures and workshops will also be offered. Admission to the entire HNF is free on Saturday and Sunday. (nba)

Hyperion has been managed by a receiver since last week (Update)
"Ben Hermans BV" (hereinafter: BHBV) is a private company with limited liability owned by Ben Hermans, which has held 97% of the shares in Hyperion since 2019 and acts as a 'director' of Hyperion on paper. In March, bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against BHBV for the second time. In the same month, Ben Hermans had already initiated the founding of a new company with the same name.
As BHBV has not published any statutory annual reports since 2021, it is currently unclear whether the company still holds the majority of shares in Hyperion. Ben Hermans has not responded to an inquiry from amiga-news.de; the appointed liquidator Charlotte Piers tells us she'll get back to us in the next few days with "a more detailed response".
Friday's edition of the Belgian Official Gazette (local copy) now contains the information that insolvency lawyer Bart De Moor has been appointed "voorlopig bewindvoerder" for Hyperion Entertainment. Machine translation tools turn "bewindvoerder" into "administrator" - but as native Dutch speakers tell us, a more accurate translation would be "receiver".
It is currently unclear who appointed De Moor as receiver - if he had been appointed by BHBV's liquidator, this would be a clear indication that Hyperion Entertainment is part of BHBV's bankruptcy estate. We have asked Bart De Moor for confirmation and will update this news item accordingly should he respond to our questions.
Update: (10.04.24, 16:45, cg)
Translation error: in several places, we had translated the German term "Konkursverwalter" to "liquidator" - this is a correct translation, but does not match the English term the native Dutch speakers mentioned in the news item used: They translated "voorlopig bewindvoerder" to "receiver". News item updated accordingly. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Turn-based strategy game: New demo version of "Ecliptic"
Ecliptic is described by the author as "a mixture of turn based tactical combat and role playing" (amiga-news.de reported) being a visually reminiscent of the retro-futuristic science fiction of the 1970s and 1980s (YouTube video). The player's task is to regain control of a spaceship drifting in space and occupied by aliens. Now a second demo has been released for the game which still is in development.
More messages have been added to describe what is going on or what is expected of the player. Modal actions like selecting an item to use or viewing the map can now be cancelled by the icon or key that activated them. Work has also begun on adding further animations to the robot characters for using objects or attacking. As the author writes, the first level is as good as finished and he has started on the second level, "which will lean heavily into paying homage to Aliens".
The game requires 1MB RAM, recommended is an Amiga 1200 with HD and Fast RAM.

History of technology: The Rise and Fall of 3M's Floppy Disc
IEEE, an online magazine specialising in technology topics, has published a background report on the storage medium floppy disk and the company 3M that is well worth reading.
Floppy discs had an amazingly long life - it was only in January 2024 that the Japanese government announced that it would no longer require floppy disc copies of government applications. 3M got out of the data storage business some 28 years ago when it transferred its floppy disc production to an outsourced company called Imation. Imation still exists, under the name Glassbridge Enterprises, but with a much lower profile.
You can read the entire article in English under the title link. (nba)

AmigaOS 4.1: Graphics card driver RadeonHD V5.20 for Sam460
The RadeonHD driver software is a graphics driver for RadeonHD graphics cards for AmigaOS 4.1 (amiga-news.de reported). Version 5 only supports "Southern Islands" cards (HD7000 series), but offers hardware-accelerated video decoding (Enhancer Software 2.2 required). The new version 5.20 has now been released for the Sam460. The changes:
- Fixed a potential crash in the find card code when the card is already in
use
- Fixed an infinite loop in code to get PCIe speed capabilities, which would
trigger if the parent PCIe device isn't the root controller
- Disabled GART for the Sam460 again (was accidentally enabled)
- The usleep() threshold for using the timer device was broken a while ago.
FIXED
- Rewrote usleep() so it no longer needs to open/close the timer device
every time there's a longer delay (lowers overhead)
- Now skips attempting to initialize the card altogether if the card is
already in use
- Fixed a potential crash if initializing the driver failed
- Enabled the UVD interrupt (trap handler)
- Fixed interrupt handling for the Sam460. Caching on PCIe reads from VRAM
was causing the interrupt handler to read stale data, resulting in missed
interrupts which, in turn, causes a complete freeze. Added fallback and
workaround code

Operating system: NetBSD 10.0
The Unix derivative NetBSD has been released in version 10.0. The eighteenth major version of the NetBSD operating system is also available as an original port for PowerPC-Amigas (experimental) and 68k-Amigas.
The global changes since the last version 9.3 are listed on the NetBSD website and include numerous performance, security and general aspects. Two new features are listed specifically for Amiga systems:
- support for Kickstart 3.2 (the release from 2020)
- loadbsd bootloader now loads the kernel into the highest priority memory segment instead of the largest segment
The following system requirements are specified for installation and operation on 68k Amigas: Amiga with 68020 processor or higher with MMU, at least 24 MB Fast RAM and at least 250 MB free hard disc space. An FPU is not required; according to the developers, the system "does not run correctly" on LC processors 68LC040 and 68LC060 as well as on the 68040V. (nba)

Motorola68k emulation: Status update on the WLAN driver for Emu68
After Michal Schulz had released the first stable version 1.0 of his Motorola68K emulation Emu68 a good week ago (amiga-news.de reported), he is working intensively on a WLAN driver and had made first considerations and tests in a Patreon post.
In yesterday's post under the title link, he now reports that he has made quite a bit of progress with the development: the WLAN driver initialises correctly, scans for available networks and can connect to them. As soon as this happens, you receive data packets (frames) that can now be passed to the network stack.
Michal's next step is to finalise the SANA II driver interface. For the time being he will only connect to a predefined network for testing reasons. Once this is working and he can use the driver with AmigaOS, he will add the wireless features - releasing network scans to AmigaOS, getting signal strength, selecting a wireless network to connect to and so on.
After completing this step, he will either use an available tool or write his own to display the networks on AmigaOS and allow the user to connect. Finally, he will also provide some sort of configuration file to allow the driver to connect to a specific network at startup. As a last step he will then try to implement wireless security protocols like WPA/WPA2/WPA3. (dr)

Hyperion: Bankruptcy proceedings reopened against Ben Hermans B.V. (Update)
Since a restructuring in 2019, the Belgian lawyer Ben Hermans has owned around 97% of all shares in Hyperion (Heretic 2, AmigaOS 4, AmigaOS 3.2), which he transferred to his company "Ben Hermans B.V." a few months later. Since then, this very company also acts as the "Director" of Hyperion Entertainment.
Bankruptcy proceedings had already been opened against Ben Hermans B.V. in May 2021: the annual financial statements for 2019 - the year in which Hermans had transferred its private Hyperion shares to Ben Hermans B.V. - had still not been published, in violation of applicable Belgian law. When asked by amiga-news.de at the time, Hermans stated that the external accountant had not been able to complete the annual report on time (quote) "due to COVID restrictions - such as the requirements to work from home and to allow only minimal staffing in offices". The problem was resolved a few months later by submitting the missing annual report.
In the meantime, the company's status in the Belgian company database is once again listed as "Opening of bankruptcy procedure" (announcement in the Belgian Company Newsletter). A quick look at the published financial statements shows that the last filed report covers the 2021 financial year. We have asked Ben Hermans for a statement on the reopening of bankruptcy proceedings, but have not yet received a response.
Update: (30.03.24, 23:30, cg)
According to the Belgian Business Register, there is now another company called Ben Hermans B.V., founded on March 11 of this year. The provider faillissementsdossier.be, which centrally processes up-to-date information on Belgian company insolvencies and similar events, has an entry for the original Ben Hermans B.V., which claims "Ben Hermans [...] was declared insolvent by a court in Brussels on 19.03.2024". Overview: Linux for Sam and A1222-Plus boards
With our ongoing coverage of new Linux kernels for the AmigaOne X1000 and X5000 models (amiga-news.de reported), the availability of the A1222 Plus, as well as the Sam460LE boards, raises the question of how Linux support will look here.
Sam boards
As Amiga Linux expert Christian 'xeno74' Zigotzky explains to us, the kernels for the X1000 and X5000 cannot be used for the Sam boards. The responsible developer Julian Margetson, who built, tested, published and offered support for these Linux kernels for the Sam, had to stop working on them for personal reasons, so someone is currently being sought to take over this task.
However, there are still working Linux downloads available for the Sam boards.
A1222 Plus
The Debian developers have removed the PowerPC SPE platform so that there will be no more Linux developments for the A1222. The reason for this was the deletion as a target platform in version 9 of the vcc compiler, which was already obsolete in version 8.The Debian developers have removed the PowerPC SPE platform so that there will be no more Linux developments for the A1222. The reason for this was the deletion as a target platform in version 9 of the vcc compiler, which was already obsolete in version 8.
However, all kernels and images remain available on the Tabor Linux download page. As Christian explains, Debian PowerPC-SPE works very well on the Tabor board (screenshot). If you would like to test Debian on the A1222 Plus, you will find Linux Guide. The links to the latest kernel and to the PowerPC-SPE version of the Arctic Fox browser:
Further downloads can be found on the A1222 Linux downloads page (user name: tabor, password: amigaone). (dr)

Der Standard: Bobby Kotick, who wants to buy Tiktok, once interested in Amiga
The Austrian daily newspaper "Der Standard" reports on Robert 'Bobby' Kotick at the title link. The former Activision boss had put himself forward as a possible buyer should the US business of TikTok be sold.
In this context, the newspaper recalls that the entrepreneur had unsuccessfully tried to take over Commodore International in 1987 and modify the successful Amiga 500 model - namely by removing the drive and keyboard and turn it into a games console. His plans were thwarted by Commodore boss Irving Gould. (snx)

Article series: The history of software soundtrackers (parts 1-3)
30 years ago, Xavier Borderie had fun making music on his Amiga with the help of Protracker. This was the reason for him to take a look behind the scenes in a series of articles and write about those who made soundtracking possible:
Soundtracker origins, part 1: Where in the World is Karsten Obarski?
Here the author wants to find out when the way music is composed made the leap from a physical hardware product to a software product. Who was the first person to come up with the programming of this interface? Is it really Karsten Obarski, the father of The Ultimate Soundtracker?
Soundtracker origins, part 2: Welcome to Turrican, aah hahahaha
Karsten Obarski apparently got the inspiration for "The Ultimate Soundtracker" from a tool called SoundMonitor, which the developer and musician Chris Hülsbeck released for the Commodore 64 in 1986 - a year before Obarski's own Ultimate Soundtracker. Hülsbeck was 18 years old at the time. Was this the beginning of software trackers?
Soundtracker origins, part 3: Facing a stone mountain
The history of software sound trackers seems to go back even further: in the second of the series, Chris Hülsbeck told the author that he remembers using Steinberg's MIDI Multitrack Sequencer tool on the Commodore 64 computer, around the time he was writing his own tool, Soundmonitor.
Soundtracker Origins, interlude: The coders behind the Cambrian explosion
In this somewhat off-topic article, Xavier Borderie spoke to the developers of the various Soundtracker clones, including the developers of Protracker and NoiseTracker.

Demoparty: Posadas Party 2024 (Posadas/ES, 28.6.-30.6.)
In the very south of Europe, the demoscene has been celebrating occasionally for many years, since 1995, at the Posadas party in the town of the same name north-east of Seville.
The Posadas has its origins in the Amiga demoscene, and this is also reflected in the current competitions: entries in the demo, intro and cracktro competitions are only permitted for Amiga OCS or Amiga AGA. The best-known release on the Posadas to date is most likely the 1995 demo Batman Vuelve by the Batman Group.
In addition to the competitions, there will also be two concerts this year by electro music artists KHROME and Narcisound.
According to the organisers, pre-sales for the party will begin in a few days. (nba)

Shoot 'em up: R-Squadron
Developer Monster's Legs has made a name for himself in the scene with games for the ZX Spectrum. Recently, he has released a previously unpublished shoot 'em up for the Amiga, which he designed as a 16-year-old in the 1990s: "R-Squadron" was created using the legendary SEUCK ("Shoot 'em up Construction Kit") and deals in a humorous style with resurrected arcade games from the 70s and 80s that attack the earth - and, of course, only the player can stop them!
R-Squadron can be downloaded free of charge in ADF format from the website at the title link. (nba)

Modern text engine for Hollywood: Pangomonium 1.0 supports Emojis
Press Release: Airsoft Softwair is pleased to announce the immediate availability of a powerful new plugin for Hollywood: Pangomonium - the ultimate text engine for Hollywood. Pangomonium is a plugin of epic proportions and the first plugin to require Hollywood 10. Pangomonium contains an ultra-modern text engine that is at the cutting edge of technology and can draw text in almost any language in the world.
In addition, Pangomonium also supports fonts with colored characters, making it finally possible to write programs on Amigas that support colored emojis! Pangomonium is based on the established Pango and Cairo libraries and also allows Hollywood scripts to call all Pango/Cairo functions directly. Of course, there is also a simpler interface to draw text via Pangomonium without having to deal with Pango/Cairo in depth. Pangomonium has been two years in the making and is now finally ready for release, exclusively for Hollywood 10.
Here are just a few of Pangomonium's impressive features:
- Text can be drawn in almost any language in the world, including complex fonts and layouts such as bi-directional text, left-scrolling fonts, vertical layouts, etc.
- Support for fonts with color characters (finally emoji support on the Amiga!)
- Two high and low level interfaces for beginners and advanced users
- Hollywood scripts can use all Pango and Cairo functions (over 500 of them!)
- seamless integration into the text interface of Hollywood 10 allows very easy use
- the plugin can also replace Hollywood's vector graphics engine
- extensive documentation in AmigaGuide, HTML, CHM and PDF formats (over 300 pages!)
- over 30 ready-to-run example scripts
And best of all, Pangomonium is available to download for free from the official Hollywood portal. At least Hollywood 10 is required. Thanks to Hollywood's platform-independent plugin system, there are versions for AmigaOS 3, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, Linux, macOS and Windows.

Shaviry: DIY Amiga RGB to VGA adapter and monitor switcher
Shaviry is a new hardware project created by hobby developer Enrique Ferrari Lorenzo. It combines an Amiga video-to-VGA adapter and a monitor switcher, featuring an integrated RGB amplifier to minimise vertical bars and improve display quality. Shaviry is explicitly not a scandoubler, so the connected monitor(s) must support 15 kHz video signals.
The mode of operation of the adapter can be controlled using jumpers: Shaviry thus functions as a pure VGA adapter on Amigas that are not equipped with a graphics card or HDMI-to-VGA adapter, and/or as an automatic input switcher controlled by Switchcontrol via CIA or parallel port or by switch, Arduino or similar via a 5-volt signal. A built-in optocoupler component prevents overvoltage in this process. The switchover with a CRT monitor is immediate, with an LCD monitor it takes a little longer, according to the developer's description.
Tests were carried out by the developer with an AGA Amiga and THS7374 and THS7376 RGB amplifiers. Using the THS7374 with 9.5 Mhz filter bandwidth, the vertical bars are slightly visible, but the image is blurred, according to the developer. The THS7376 produces a sharp image and the bars are almost invisible.
Shavira is currently not offered commercially, but is aimed at the growing do-it-yourself community, i.e. those who are not afraid to wield a soldering iron. The developer Enrique Ferrari Lorenzo provides the PCB data for KiCad and Gerber files on the project page on GitHub under the title link for free download and provides a complete overview of the required components along with extensive image and video material for support. The current revision is REV23012024 from 23 January 2024. A readme about Shaviry is also available in English. (nba)

Trevor's Blog: On the Plus side
Trevor Dickinson from A-EON Technology published a new article in his "Trevor's Blog" yesterday. Among other things, he explains why the delivery of the A1222 Plus motherboards, which began a week ago, has been delayed again: "The original batch of boards received over a month ago worked well but did not include the onboard USB headers and had to be sent back to the manufacturer for minor rework. Also a revision change by the MCU manufacturer meant the onboard temperature sensor was not read correctly and the CPU fan did not spin up. When designing the motherboard, Varisys, the original hardware developer, did not think a CPU fan was necessary but included one as an extra precaution." The problem was solved by modifying the MCU programming firmware.
As Trevor Dickinson further reports, other people besides AAA Technology were involved in making the release of the A1222 Plus possible: Steven Solie, for example, developed an extremely fast and simple, but very powerful recovery USB drive that ensures that all necessary OS4.1 and enhancer software files are installed correctly, and Alexandre Balaban created a fully updated AmigaOS 4.1-ISO. On our own behalf: Changes to the team, Nico Barbat returns
Nico Barbat, a long-time demoscene member and well-known Amiga journalist, joined the amiga-news.de team back in 2000. Initially taking care of the job exchange Free Amiga Jobs, he intensified the cooperation between the print magazine "Amiga Plus", for which he was responsible as editor-in-chief, and our news service in the following years until he finally took over management of amiga-news.de at the end of 2003.
Anyone who knows Nico Barbat knows that even after his final retirement from the amiga-news.de team in 2011, the Amiga never really let go of him: There was always talk of projects, possibilities were explored or connections were made. The "official" return with the founding of the publishing house "Look Behind You" in 2022 now also has positive consequences for amiga-news.de: The ex-boss is back in the team. There is no longer a job exchange to look after, but there is still plenty of work for experienced editors ;)
We also welcome Markus 'IM_Petrow' Bonet, a long-time amiga-news.de reader, to the team: as server administrator, Markus will take care of the technical infrastructure on which our largely self-developed content management system runs. We would like to thank our two (more or less) "newcomers" for their support.
Editor's note: To ensure the independence of our reporting, articles on projects by Nico Barbat's publishing house Look Behind You or his LBY business partner Simon Neumann (including Alinea) will continue to be written exclusively by other editors. (cg)

Amiga disks on PC: Copy program G-Copy 0.5
Almost two years ago (amiga-news.de reported), developer Arne Urbaniak presented his copy programme G-Copy for reading and writing Amiga ADF data on a Windows PC. G-Copy, which is visually similar to the popular X-Copy, supports the drive controllers Greaseweazle by Keir Fraser, ADF-Drive by D. Tonn or DrawBridge (Arduino) by Rob Smith.
In the new version 0.5, Greaseweazle routines have been revised and basic support for the ADF controller and DrawBridge has been added. According to the developer, the SCP routine for the ADF controller still needs to be optimised, the content of the disc is already displayed and the checkdisk function has been completed, while the basic control of the DrawBridge now works. The user can also switch between German and English layouts and switch the sound on and off.
Visitors to the ARC (Amiga Ruhrpott Convention (25 May 2024 in Duisburg, Germany) can experience G-Copy live in combination with some controllers at the developer's stand.

WHDLoad: Running cracktros from the website
WHDLoad author Bert Jahn has updated the WHDLoad website so that all Cracktros can now be started directly using the Amiga emulator vAmigaWeb via the "Info" link. This works for all productions that do not require an AGA or a Kickstart image. There are also corresponding plans for demos and mags. (dr)
