YAM OpenSource Team, Jens Langner, Thore Böckelmann (ANF)

E-Mail-Client: YAM 2.6
The YAM Open Source Team has published version 2.6 of the MUI-based eMail-program YAM. Under AmigaOS 4.1 now the new "Display Notifications" are used to inform on new mails. Additionally ports for different AROS-platforms (x86, PPC, x86_64) are available. The most important changes in YAM 2.6:
  • updated translations for czech, french, german, greek, italian and swedish language
  • updated default theme images by Martin 'Mason' Merz
  • added import and export functions for alien address books (i.e. XML files as used by SimpleMail)
  • AmigaOS4.1's new notification system will can used to inform the user about new received mails
  • improved handling of header lines in general and especially malformed header lines by certain Microsoft software
  • improved download and export speed of mails by optimizing the amount of data shown on the screen. Overall the speed increased about 200%
  • improved the spam handling by treating the user's address book as a white list
  • rewritten RFC2047 and RFC2822 routines to match the current RFC recommendations
  • individual character sets can now be configured for reading and writing mails instead of having one character set for all actions
  • improved ARexx command handling and extended command set
  • all error messages which occured during a mail transfer now include the account name to make it easier to spot the faulty account in case a user has more than one account at the same provider
  • mail attachments are displayed as a scrollable virtual group to be able to show an unlimited number of files
  • all balance object use the new NBalance.mcc class which supports custom mouse pointers
  • foreign characters with a mail may be converted to either "?" or similar look alike characters
  • reduced overall stack usage by using dynamically allocated memory when needed
  • the text font and style can be configured independently for reading and writing mails
  • the spam training data can be optimized to keep the data base small by removing very rarely used word
  • made the date scanning of birthdays locale aware
  • added various AROS versions (i386, ppc, x86_64)
  • added NOSPLASHWINDOW tooltype to start/quit YAM silently
  • on AmigaOS4.1 the new URL: device will be preferred over openurl.library to invoke a browser
  • lots of other improvement we don't remember right now (keep in mind: more than 2 years of development was put into YAM 2.6!) :)

Users of older versions as YAM 2.5 should note that the Assign "YAM:" is no longer required and can be removed from the User-Startup. Additionally configuration and mail files of these older versions are no longer compatible and will be converted to the new format during the first launch. The authors recommend a backup of all the old data as well as to immeditately save the YAM-configuration after the upgrade.

The YAM-team is looking for helpers who want to support the team in reworking the documentation in different languages as well as in translating the program. If you want to thank the developers you can donate a little money here. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Hyperion and A-EON announce strategic partnership
Press release Brussels, Belgium – February 20, 2010. Hyperion Entertainment CVBA and A-EON Technology CVBA announce strategic partnership.

Hyperion Entertainment and A-EON have entered into a strategic partnership to provide the Amiga community with a dedicated high-end PowerPC based platform for AmigaOS 4.x which aspires to be worthy of the Amiga hardware tradition going back to the original Amiga 1000 from Commodore.

The massively expandable AmigaOne X1000 (amiga-news.de reported) will inspire both current and former AmigaOS users and will also appeal to those looking to exploit the incredibly versatile onboard functionality offered by the unique "Software Defined Silicon" technology from XMOS which, in true Amiga tradition, provides the AmigaOne X1000 with a custom chipset of potentially unparalleled flexibility and scalability.

Software development by Hyperion to bring AmigaOS 4.1, the most advanced incarnation of AmigaOS ever, to the AmigaOne X1000 hardware has been ongoing for quite some time and is progressing very well.

More details about the AmigaOne X1000 hardware and housing will be forthcoming from A-EON Technology shortly. (snx)

MorphOS: Several game ports (update)
During the last months "SixK" has ported some SDL-based, open-source games to MorphOS:

Round based strategy: Free Heroes of Might and Magic 2

Free Heroes of Might and Magic 2 is a reimplementation of the first two parts of the fantasy series Heroes of Might and Magic (screenshots: 1, 2). The files of the original, commercial version are required.

Download: fheroes-src-r1410_mos.tar.gz (2,8 MB)

Action role playing game: FreedroidRPG 0.13rc2

FreedroidRPG is an action roleplaying game similar to Diablo (screenshots: 1, 2). The MorphOS-archive contains two versions: freedroidRPG_opengl uses the graphic-hardware for displaying it. Because of the limitations of the MorphOS-port of OpenGL there can be some problems.

Download: freedroidrpg-0.13rc2_mos.tar.gz (133 MB)

Arcade-Puzzler: Pushover 0.0.2

Pushover is a remake of an old commercial Amiga game (screenshot).

Download: pushover-0.0.2_mos.tar.gz (40 MB)

Lemmings-clone: Pingus 0.7.2

Pingus is a clone of the Amiga classic Lemmings (screenshot). The MorphOS-archive should not be extract with untgz because this program does not create some empty folders required by the game. The MorphOS-version does still not include any compiler optimizations.

Download: pingus_0.7.2_mos.tar.gz (13 MB)

Blob Wars: Metal Blob Solid 1.14

Blob Wars is a 2D-platform game (screenshots: 1, 2).

Update: Herbert "HAK" Klackl has ported the latest version 1.14 and published it here.

Project: Starfighter 1.1.0

Project Starfighter is a traditional Shoot'em Up (screenshots: 1, 2).

Download: starfighter-1.1_mos.tar.gz (3 MB)

Powermanga 0.90

Powermanga is a 2D Shoot'em Up similar to "Deluxe Galaga". The game offers 41 levels, more than 200 sprites and supports the resolutions 320x200 or 640x400.

Download: powermanga-0.90.tar.gz (11 MB)

Zelda: Oni Link Begins

Zelda: Oni Link Begins is a remake of Nintendo's well-known action adventure Legend of Zelda (screenshots: 1, 2).

Download: ZeldaOLB-src-morphos.tar.gz (17 MB) (cg) (Translation: dr)

The Retro Remix Amiga Game Making Competition
On amiga.org you can read:

"Hi everyone!

Due to the overwhelming success and response to the Festive Amiga Game Making Competition, the team at Underground Arcade has decided to host quarterly competitions which means you will be given the chance to enter four different Amiga game-making contests each year and win some amazing Amiga prizes!
So, are you ready for it now? Our next competition theme is... RETRO REMIX! The challenge is to remake any game you like for the Amiga. It doesn't have to be an exact remake or clone of the original game, but could be more like a "Deluxe" or "Lite" version, or perhaps a sequel.
This time you'll have two months to complete your entry, starting now. All of the entries must be uploaded and ready to play by March 31st 2010. We will be announcing the full list of really cool prizes over the next few weeks so stay tuned! I can say that the prizes we have so far are really fantastic! I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this competition's prize pool and if anyone wants to donate any more prizes, please let me know by private message or email, thanks!
The rules of this "Retro Remix" competition are here:

1. This time, we're giving you two months to work on your game. If your game isn't finished by the end of the time limit (March 31st), upload it anyway but have at least one playable level or a demo of the game completed.
2. The game you make for this competition must be playable on either classic OCS or AGA Amigas. This way, it'll reach more people who have classic hardware, or have access to UAE. If you want to port your "remixed" game to another system - AROS, MorphOS or OS4, feel free to as long as your final competition entry will work on a classic Amiga.
3. The game you "remix" must be based on an already existing game on any system (including Amiga) and you must clearly state in the ReadMe file which game you are basing it on too.
4. Ripped graphics are allowed, but keep in mind that enhanced or new graphics can sometimes improve your chances in the competition.

Feel free to use any software you like to create your game, including the use of game editors such as Backbone, SEUCK, GRAC/GRAAL or program it yourself if you like. If you need any help getting started on your game, please let us know and we'll try our best to help you.
If your talent lies mainly in one particular field, such as music arrangement and composition, or perhaps you're a coder or graphic artist who doesn't feel up to creating an entire game on your own, why not consider teaming up with others and sharing the prizes. Post away and let people know about your skills and ideas, and maybe there'll be someone else who wants the help you have to offer.
That's all for now! Good luck everyone and don't forget to keep checking back for news on prizes and more!" (snx) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: AmiUpdate 1.120
AmiUpdate is a simple archive manager similar to tools like RPM or dpkg from the Linux world. Changes in version 1.120:
  • Rejigged the information window to allow for much longer extended descriptions
  • Database entries without a full path are now searched for using APPDIR: in addition to the system path
  • Removed the keyboard shortcuts from the reboot requester to save any unwanted activation
  • The reboot countdown requester now shows the time in seconds until the system goes down, plus offers a "Cancel" button so that the reboot can be cancelled
  • Added the ROLLBACKDIR tooltype to allow using a different path for Rollback data

MorphOS: Blender 2.50 Alpha 0
Guillaume 'Yomgui' Roguez ha published an update of his MorphOS-port of Blender. On the official website you can find detailed information about the changes.

The author gave some hints for the MorphOS-version:
  • You do not need to install it. Simply extract the archive and use Blender.
  • Lauffähigkeit auf dem Efika wird nicht garantiert
  • If you want to configure the size of the start window, then launch Blender from the Shell with the paramter "-p", followed by the figures of x and y position as well as of the width and highness of the window. The figures must be seperated by four blanks.
  • Blender must be copied to the harddrive. Starting from the RAM-Disk is not supported
  • On his website the author has published all known bugs. Please do not post them again
  • FFMPEG-support works but is not optimized for Altivec
  • Thumbnails created by integrated file-browser are saved in PROGDIR:.thumbnails/

Update of Amiga Games List
David Brunet has updated his database of Amiga games and presents issue 39 of the "Amiga Games List" which now has 11192 entries in the following categories:
  • 10143 games
  • 887 data-disks and extensions
  • 127 game or level editors
  • 35 interpreters

In order to focus on the "proper" Amiga games this last issue no longer includes several games which does not depend on platforms and which can be only played with interpreter. Additionally the releases of the year 2009 were added and the database does now know the licence type "Creative Commons" and the programming language AmiBlitz. (cg) (Translation: dr)
