Sunny prices at IOSPIRIT
Felix Schwarz writes: It's sunny and warm - it is the time where people are refuelling their energy... And it's the time where IOSPIRIT is again lowering the prices.

Available at heavily reduced prices are fxPAINT, fxSCAN, VHI Studio and the IOSPIRIT Graphics Megabundle (contains the latest full versions of fxPAINT, fxSCAN and VHI Studio).

Opportunity is good... (snx)

First reports and photos from the OS4 event in Essen/Germany (update 2)
In the forum of Amigaworld.net gives Amon_Re a first overview about the OS4 event that took place today in Essen.

According to his words were almost a dozen of AmigaOne computers shown with AmigaOS 4.0 coming in the ATX as well as in the mini ITX form.

Participants had been among others:
  • Petro Tyschtschenko (said to be consultant for Gericom)
  • Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden, Timothy De Groote, Steffen Häuser (Hyperion)
  • Jens Schönfeld (Individual Computers)
  • Rakesh and Sharwin Raghoebardayal (Coyote Flux)
  • Alan Redhouse (Eyetech)
  • Guido Does (Vesalia)
  • Ron van Herk (Computer City)
  • Sebastian Brylka (Amiga Insider)
  • Alexander Lohrmann (68k emulation)
  • "Chip" (Moovid)
  • Volker Mohr
Alan Redhouse held a speech about his aims with the MicroA1 and why China were interested in devices with little power consumption. In addition there would be a Remote Windows Client for AmigaOS 4.0. After the speech questions could be asked but nothing of interest had been said.

Regarding the MicroA1 Alan Redhouse had said that its later sales version wouldn't be finished yet. In principal, it is planned as a shrinked form with expansion slot similar the one for the main processor to have a basis to build on depending on the specific needs.

Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden held no speech but answered questions regarding the availability of AmigaOS 4.0 with "when it's ready".

Software shown were ArtEffect 4, FreeSpace and AudioEvolution as well as some ports, especially emulators.

Update: (15.05.04, 21:10, cg)

At Amiga Insider, there's also a short report as well as photos from the event.

Update: (16.05.04, 08:38, snx)

Elbox (ANF)

Elbox: Cocolino Mouse Interface available
Elbox Computer is pleased to announce release of the Cocolino Mouse Interface. Cocolino is a PS/2 mouse interface, with the unique capability of supporting two scroll wheels and 3rd, 4th and 5th buttons available in many PS/2 mice nowadays. The Cocolino interface simply plugs into the Amiga's mouse port.

Features:
  • The Cocolino PS/2 Mouse Interface is a microprocessor-based adapter for attaching PS/2 mice, trackballs, glidepoints and radio-controlled mice from the world of PC computers.
  • Cocolino works with all models of Amiga computers. It simply plugs into the Amiga's mouse port.
  • The Cocolino PS/2 Mouse Interface is a full 'plug and play' device. No software is required for standard use. The enclosed software (cocolino.driver) allows using two wheels and 3rd, 4th and 5th buttons available in many PS/2 mice and trackballs.
  • The Cocolino interface starts working simultaneous with the computer's start so mice can be used in the early-startup-menu (unlike the mice connected through the serial port).
  • Cocolino uses linear movement interpolation, which makes mouse movements perfectly smooth with any screen frame rates.
The complete press release by Elbox can be found under the title link. (snx)

Merregnon Team

Merregnon 2 - project finished!
After more than three years of development, the Merregnon 2 project is finished! The album is due to be released on 2004/05/24 in Germany.

You can pre-order your CD at shops like Amazon.de, Buch.de or Rollenspiele-shop right away, or purchase your CD at your local shop. If you live outside of Germany please refer to Music by Design Ltd. and synSoniq Records. It has been quite a journey for us, and I want to thank all of the people who are interested in our CD and have supported us with kind and helpful feedback throughout its development. We are very proud of what we have achieved, combining live orchestra music, performed by members of the Prague Symphony and the New York Philharmonic; Nine composers from all over the world who provided us with their own fantastic music, 80 minutes of the finest pieces; and six artists who painted a beautiful 28 pages booklet, telling the story of Merregnon. The work has been intense for everybody. The production required a lot of skill and ambition. (sn)

Amiga Java: Status report from "JAmiga"
The JAmiga project has released a short status report:

"JAmiga status report May 2004

it's been a long time since our last status report and things have become very quiet around JAmiga. However, a lot of work was done in the background. We have meanwhile ported JAmiga so that it can be compiled with gcc which will open up chances to compile it for other platforms. While being a major task, for most users no difference between the StormC and gcc version will be visible.

We are planning to release a new version with the classpath 0.09 fairly soon, once all classpath-changes have been properly reflected within JAmiga. Eventually, you may be able to use a few AWT gadgets by then, but no promise about that :)

New JAmiga Forum

We now have our "own" Forum on www.jamiga.org which may be used for chitchat, discussions, requests, etc.

First donation arrived

Only a few days ago, we have received our first donation -100 EUR- wow. Thank you very much! We have therefore decided to put up bounties for certain tasks....

Bounty for ZIP File reader

This bounty is endowed with EUR 50. It will go to the person that writes a ZIP Reading "JavaStream" class. Please see our Forum or contact us if you're willing to help!

best regards,

Your JAmiga Team" (cg)

Intel announces Dual-Core-Processor for desktop-computers
Intel has announced a desktop processor with Dual-Core for 2005. The planned Pentium-4-Prescott successor with codename Tejas will be not produced. The company has not given any statement if this means the end for the Pentium-4-architecture; but it is more likely that Intel turns to the Pentium-M-architecture that does not need so much current.

PC Magazine: John C. Dvorak mentioned AmigaOS 4.0
On issue from 4th May 2004 John C. Dvorak mentioned in US-American PC Magazine on page 65 after MorphOS (amiga-news.de reported) also AmigaOS 4.0 and called the competition between the two PPC operating systems as possible lucky chance for the desktop computers.

He wrote: "Amiga Not Dead Yet Dept.: When I wrote about the MorphOS initiative, essentially a clean-room redesign of the Amiga OS for the PowerPC, I failed to mention that there is still a lively pure-amiga crowd that is developing a new OS for a PowerPC iteration of the original Amiga. OS4's implementation should modernize and perhaps revitalize the platform. A competition between these two camps could be the best thing to happen to desktop computing in decades." EU eastward enlargement: Customer information by Elbox and Individual Computers
On the occasion of the European Union's eastward enlargement by ten countries today, the companies Elbox and Individual Computers inform their customers about its effects on future orders.

Elbox in the European Union

We are very happy that now we are in the European Union!

Today, customs borderlines disappear between Poland and: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom.

What does this mean for our customers?

Now our packages will reach you even faster!
Also, prices for shipment are definitely lower, starting from EUR 10.00 for customers from EU!

Check it for yourself...
Visit our Online Store at http://shop.elbox.com.

With best wishes,
Elbox Computer Team

Individual Computers welcomes the new member states of the EU

The European Union got ten new member states today. The new states Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia together have about 74 million citizens who's everyday life will most probably not change significantly. We want to spare you the polemics that's seen on all media today and point to an EU-directive that affects every EU citizen when shopping in other countries. Shopping on the Internet is either done with credit cards, PayPal or bank transfers. Customers from many of the new EU member states are not accepted by PayPal, and credit cards are not very popular in eastern Europe, so the only thing left is a bank transfer for mail-ordered goods from other EU states.

EU-directive 2001/C 363/01 (PDF) applies to these cases. It states that cross-border transfers within the EU may not be more expensive than domestic transfers, provided that the currency is EUR, the BIC/IBAN numbers are used (international account data), and the transfer has been entered online. This also applies to the states that haven't introduced the EUR currency yet. It works fine in Sweden for example, but some British banks prefer not to tell their customers about this directive, and charge high international fees.

Sometimes banks try to trick their customers into making a traditional SWIFT transfer by handing them outdated forms. This transfer method still works fine, but the sender bank and the beneficiary bank deduct fairly high fees from the amount. Since the EU directive does not apply to this older transfer method, the fees are justified. You should insist on electronic access to your account, so you can take advantage from this EU-directive. MorphOS: CPU-Monitor (Update)
Ecologically friendly CPU Monitor for MorphOS

I'm very proud to annouce that we could finish today the first ever ecologically friendly CPU Monitor for the MorphOS operating system.

CPU Monitor 1.0 is completly based on old and recycled source code. It is also completly recyclable for further use and all non recyclable parts, like the falled out hairs of the development crew, are 100% biodegradable. It was for the first time ever possible to renounce animal experiments, therefore no coders were harmed during the several years lasting development of CPU Monitor.

We're very proud and excited about this success!

Please visit http://www.the-recyclable-cpumonitor-project.org for more information and corporate inquiries.

We opened the shop so you can order your 100% chloroform-free copy of CPU Monitor 1.1 for the MorphOS operating system (C.O.D.) NOW! Also a CPU Monitor Brochure for immediate download is available for free.

Constantinos Nicolakakis (E-Mail)

Tool: SRename 3.9.0
Constantinos Nicolakakis has released version 3.9.0 of the tool SRename. Using SRename, which requires AmigaOS 3.0+, you can rename files easily.

New features:
  • Improved the benchmarking functionality of the STATS option. Added a more meaningful "Renamed objects per second" statistic. This figure is displayed only if the given rename operations take at least a second, and an additional message is displayed if this figure doesn't represent performance accurately because of given options or other factors. Also added the percentage of processed files that are or would be renamed.
  • Added the FORCEPATH option to force the entire filepattern to be taken as a path regardless if it ends with a slash or not. This was added to avoid having to add a slash at the end of a path every time a path has to be supplied.
  • Display of warnings when the parser detects problematic command sequences that can still be executed.
  • More speed in Indirect mode and less code size by streamlining the internal workings of Indirect mode. Several storage buffers were unified into one making the code that handles Indirect mode much less convoluted and much more robust.
  • Further reduced startup time when Indirect mode is used.
Bugfixes:
  • Mishandling of separators under certain conditions.
  • Sometimes error messages weren't displayed.
  • The Main component failed to be created under certain conditions.
  • Incorrect number placement when modifying the Basename using swapping, shifting or unifying 2-component basenames since version 3.8.0.
  • Incorrect operation of Indirect mode in some occasions.
Other changes:
  • Added the script "RenumberNoBase" for renumbering batches of filenames that don't share a common basename.
  • Fixed the "HexToChr" script to process only byte hex values.

Since December 2003 Microsoft has demanded licence charges for "FAT" (a widely spread file system which is used on flash-memory or on older Windows versions). It is possible because the company has got a patent for this technology.

Cloanto released Amiga Forever 6.0
April 15, 2004 - Cloanto released today version 6.0 of Amiga Forever, the Classic Amiga emulation, OS, connectivity and support suite officially licensed by the Amiga companies.

Amiga Forever is available in a downloadable Online Edition and in a CD Edition which includes premium content of historical interest (all Amiga OS versions, gallery, videos, games) and KX Light. All versions of Amiga Forever include Amiga OS 1.3 and 3.X files and make it possible to run Classic Amiga software (including hundreds of legally downloadable games) on any PC, with special support for the Windows platform, but also compatible with Mac OS X and GNU/Linux systems.

Amiga Forever 6.0 is a completely restructured package which took more than two years to complete. New features include:
  • Preinstalled Amiga applications more than doubled (both in the 3.X and in the 1.3 environments)
  • Support for hard disks larger than 4 GB, mouse wheel, AHI, MUI, etc.
  • Built-in web browser, great for both "safe surfing" and for cross-browser web design testing (e.g. to see how your sites look without Java, Flash or ActiveX)
  • CDs are now automounted in real time (includes CacheCDFS file system)
  • Built-in CD audio player and media player
  • New Amiga ROM and OS files (as in Amiga OS "3.5" and "3.9", but also historical items such as the Amiga 1000 boot ROM)
  • New reference configurations (for A500, A1200, CDTV, CD32, etc.)
  • More than 10 "First Demos" (Boing, Robo-City, Juggler, etc.) added to 1.3 environment
  • More realistic emulation (e.g. floppy disk drive sound, which makes an unexpected big difference in perception, but also required the addition of a good old "noclick" utility ;-)
  • New documentation (HTML shared by both Amiga and host OS)
  • Amiga Explorer 6.0 software
  • New launcher panel with one-click controls
  • New Software Manager for easy emulation news and updates

The CD Edition of Amiga Forever additionally includes the following new features:
  • Boot from CD option (featuring the KX Light GNU/Linux distribution)
  • New Gallery section (includes 1985 Byte Magazine reprint)
  • New high quality videos (includes Launch of Amiga New York event)
  • New preinstalled games (Mindwalker, Ports of Call, Deluxe Galaga, etc.)

(Please refer to the Amiga Forever web site for important additional information and screenshots.)

Classic Amiga software compatibility is achieved by means of an Amiga hardware emulation layer (configurable to emulate different Amiga models and custom chip sets) and different versions of the original Amiga OS (not an emulation). The Amiga environment in turn relies on host operating system functionality to transparently enable modern features such as up-to-date hardware drivers, virtual memory, WiFi networking, DirectX technology, advanced power management, Serial ATA storage, etc.

Amiga Forever 6.0 is scheduled to be featured on 3sat TV's "neues" show, on April 17, at 18:30 (via Astra satellite), and at the Amiga Party in Maarssen, the Netherlands, also on April 17.

As always, the Amiga Forever Team at Cloanto would like to thank the Amiga Community for its support over these almost 20 years, which made this new version possible. (cg)

Hollywood Designer 1.0 released
After a long development time, Hollywood Designer 1.0 is now available and can be ordered on the Airsoft Softwair homepage. Hollywood Designer is a high-end presentation software that creates together with Hollywood 1.9 the ultimate Multimedia suite for your Amiga or Pegasos.

About Hollywood Designer:

Hollywood Designer is a state-of-the-art WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor for presentations. You can create amazing presentations with just a few clicks and they will be shown with Hollywood then. You can also save your presentations as stand-alone executables for AmigaOS, WarpOS and MorphOS. Additionally, your presentations can be saved as Hollywood scripts. Pages can be exported as single pictures too so that you can e.g. embed them in a HTML page. The program makes project management very easy by organizing all your project files in one directory which you can administrate with the inbuilt data manager. If you create a new project with Hollywood Designer, it will create a whole environment for your work complete with icons, drawers and info files. It just can't get any easier!

Hollywood Designer has everything you would expect from a modern multimedia application: Many colorful icons, images and toolbars, extensive online help system, undo/redo, context menus, recent menu, clipboard usage, keyboard control and a completely localized interface. It uses a page-pased presentation concept, which means that your project consists of as many pages as you want and each page consists of as many objects as you want. Objects are for example texts, animations, brushes and graphics forms. It has a powerful layout window where you can easily drag all objects around with the mouse, change the look of your pages and modify the objects attributes. Everything is implemented in a WYSIWYG way.

The program supports bitmap, color, intelli and truetype fonts for your texts. You can edit your text objects by using the powerful integrated text editor or you can import texts from external files into Hollywood Designer. Clipboard text import and export is also supported of course. There are many text formatting possibilities like bold, italic, underlined, shadow and outline text which can be used. Of course the shadow and outline style can be configured to fit your needs. You can also specify the text alignment (left, right or centered).

You can use brushes and animations to create absolutely unique presentations. 24-bit transparency is supported for both types. You can also scale brushes to your desired size. Hollywood Designer can insert simple graphics forms into your presentations like rectangles, ellipses and lines. You can configure the shadow and border settings of these objects as well as some other attributes like round edges for rectangles and line thickness. You can choose colors from a pre-defined palette of popular colors or you can mix your own colors in the powerful color manager. Hollywood Designer is a complete 24-bit application that can display every single color of the 16.7 million possible colors.

Every object and every page can be displayed with a transition effect. You can choose from a massive palette of over 150 different transition effects which are partly very impressive. You can use cool fly-on effects for your objects like sine wave fly-on, curved fly-on or bounce fly-on. You can also remove your objects from the display with transition effects! Objects and pages can be used to assure the correct timing of your presentation which is precise in milliseconds.

Hollywood Designer can play sound samples and Protracker modules when a page or an object is displayed. You can modify the pitch value, volume, panning and loop settings of sound samples. Samples are loaded through datatypes so that you can use almost every format you want, 8 or 16-bit, mono or stereo. Hollywood Designer supports them all. Additionally full channel mixing is supported which means that you can play as many sound samples as you want at the same time. And also Protracker modules can be played at the same time as sound samples. Audio support is implemented fully retargetable through AHI.

You can also use the program to create interactive presentations, e.g. you can add menus to your presentation that query user input and react on it. This allows you to create even complete multimedia applications like front-ends or disk magazines. Every object can be used as a button that monitors several events like mouse over, left mouse or right mouse click. If an event occurs, you can define many actions to take, e.g. show/hide other objects, play sounds, start programs, switch page, quit presentation and more.

Advanced users who are familiar with the Hollywood script language can also embed their own Hollywood code in the presentation. Every object and every page has the option to execute custom Hollywood code to make the presentation even more unique. Hollywood code can be easily edited within Hollywood Designer and there are such helpful tools like syntax checking, online reference and import/export of code.

Your presentation can be displayed in a window on Workbench/Ambient or on a full screen for a very noble look of your work! You can configure every detail of the background frame of your presentation. You can use a background pattern, background color, gradient, an image or even everything together! Presentations can be configured to loop after they have reached the end and they can also be started in mute mode without sound output. Hollywood Designer is just the ideal tool for all your presentation needs on your Amiga or Pegasos.

Hollywood Designer is a modern application that requires a modern system to work best. A graphics board is strongly recommended as well as much memory. You should have at least 32 megabytes of free memory. For users with little memory, there is a low-end setting which will use less resources than the normal version does. Additionally you will require Hollywood 1.9. Hollywood Designer comes on a CD-ROM together with example presentations and an extensive documentation which explains every part of the program. The program is really easy to use. Most things are self-explaining and for the rest you have the documentation. Everyone can create stunning presentations now!

The program has direct support for CyberGraphX and Picasso96 as well as for AHI. There are versions for AmigaOS Classic and for MorphOS (PPC native). The program was successfully tested on AmigaOS Classic, MorphOS 1.4, WinUAE and Amithlon. An OS4 version is planned to be available as soon as the operating system is available. Hollywood Designer is written in a OS friendly way and should run on every Amiga compatible system. Get creative now with Hollywood Designer!

April 14th: Developer Feedback Day
The MorphZone declared today as the Developer Feedback Day.

Whoever uses a program today might take the time to write a small message to the according author and let him know that the product is used and maybe place some additional remarks. Most times the authors do not receive any feedback by the users - soemtimes not even when they update the program.

Please take the Developer Feedback Day as a raeson for a quick note to the developers, graphic artists or other activists whose work is used day by day - the authors have earned a honour and maybe also the users will benefit from such responses by generating a new motivation for the developers to care for their products.
