John Chandler on Suite101: Expecting
John Chandler regularly writes Amiga-themed articles for Suite101.com. In his latest (which may be reached by clicking on the title link)
he refers to what we may expect from Amiga Inc. in 2003, or not. Chandler doesn't forgo mentioning that 2002 didn't go as expected, and he
can hardly conceal his disappointment that he and many others still can't use an AmigaOne with OS4. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Foundation Stock Review: What's Changed Since 1st January, 2003 (w. Update)
In a thorough article Foundation Stock Review summarizes what has changed since the 1st of January this year. Starting with
altered highway signs, progressing to the changeover from 0190 to 0900 telephone area codes, and including all the important and interesting
changes.
Update of 2nd January, 2003:
In the same vein as the new 0900 phone service numbers is the following interesting Golem article:
Telecommunications: New Charges for 2003.
Here is an excerpt: 0900 numbers change to the prefix of 0190 after January, 2003. After
the regulatory officials partially approved the new telecommunications charges, they come into effect on the 1st of February, 2003.
Along with that come reductions in urban and German charges, and increases in the monthly base fee for analog T-Net connections.
Immediately after January the phone service will raise the setup charge for T-DSL. (ps) (Translation: dm)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Sascha Brandt (Ancor)
Happy New Year!
Olaf Köbnik of Amiga Arena wishes healthy and successful year 2003 for all! The "flame" will burn in 2003 also and the (Amiga-Arena) year starts with a little surprise.
Interview with Sascha Brandt (Ancor)
Remembering the demos and announcements of adventure games like
"Shadow on Time", "Gilbert Goodmate", "Middle City" or "The last Seal"?
None of these games has been available in a final version yet (and will mostly never) except the last one!
The sci-fi adventure "The last Seal" by Ancor is still under development and early this year there will be a new demo version released. Since 1997 Ancor are developing "The last Seal", after a first playable demo was published it became quiet around this group.
Read within that interview why this has been so and what the current development stage is.

Player: Amiga-Mediaplayer V1 full version
Today Carsten Siegner has finished work on the first version of his player
'Amiga-Mediaplayer' and released this version.
- Multimedia program with transparent GUI (TV, Radio, Mediastreamer)
- Context sensitive (Mediastream, TV, Radio)
- With the help of FroggerNG nearly all formats can be replayed (Mediastream, Video, Audio)
- If you have Amithlon with AmithlonTV installed you can enjoy a transparent TV window. This can then, if the TV card also has a radio tuner, switch to a radio window.
- The TV part gets its TV prefs from TV-Watch.
- The radio part has its own prefs file which can be edited with an editor.
- The radio and TV part have 7 channel buttons each for programs.
This is arranged as in TV-Watch, except no radio settings are taken over from the TV-Watch prefs.
- Furthermore, you can turn on or switch between TV card inputs (VHS1, VHS2, SVHS1), and change audio settings (Stereo, Mono, Channel1, Channel2 and Mute).
- In addition to the seven program buttons, the radio part also has two realtime frequency controllers.
With these you can set the radio tuner frequency.
- The radio part has a frequency display (in MHz) where you can read the tuner's current frequency.
- Changer window for context choice.
- Integrated some shortcuts.
Requirements:
- Amithlon (full functionality)
- Amiga (68k, WOS, PPC, MOS), TV and radio part not activated
- Functioning AmithlonTV 2.07-beta installation (incl. Smear)
- TV card with radio tuner
- Functioning FroggerNG 2.05 installation (with Key)
- Functioning ARexx
- AHI
- For Amithlon: AC97 mixer (or else the Sound card won't be initialised)
Installation:
Just copy (nothing else) the libs appropriate for you system into the "Workbench:Libs" directory. That's it.
The Mediaplayer can then be started directly from the installation directory.
If Fogger is not installed or not installed correctly, an ASL requester appears asking for the Frogger path.
Upon starting the Mediaplayer first searches for system programs like RX etc.
These have to be located in the SYS: directory, otherwise Mediaplayer won't start properly.
After the start of the Mediaplayers the TV window has to be restarted once,
otherwise the audio part of the TV card isn't initialised, and no sound can be heard.
This, however, has to be done only once. On restarts of the Mediaplayer or the TV window the TV card is properly recognised.
Future:
- Audio export of TV and Radio sound into an AIFF file.
Download: Mediaplayer-1.lzx

Alt-WoA 2003: New venue
The organisators of the 'Alt-WoA 2003' have opted for a new venue. Instead of
at the 'Old Corn Mill' in Huddersfield, England, the Alt-WoA will now be held
at the 'Kirkdale Conference Centre'. This is located a mile from the original
venue.
Pictures, a map as well as information about the Centre are
published on the Alt-WoA Web
site.
The reason for the change is the closure of the 'Old Corn Mill' since
mid-November for ca. 22 weeks. And the organisers' insecurity about whether or
not the new owners will offer a suitable space for the event afterwards.
Amiga Inc. and Hyperion have already assured their attendance.
A confirmation from Eyetech is being awaited to then start the preparations.
An exact date has not yet been published on the site.

28th December 2002: James Daniels of Apex Designs
has published the third status report on the GBA port of the game 'Payback'.
The game's frame rate has been increased through optimisations. 15 frames/s were
targetted (matches V-Rally 3's frame rate) and 16 frames/s achieved, whereby
the optimisations for transparency effects haven't yet been added, so an
additional speed increase should be possible.
The other emphasis was on the HUD (Head up display) for showing the
score, the map, the weapons display and the mission briefs.
Instead of using the existing software routines, James Daniels had decided to
use the GBA's hardware sprites.
Though this is quite expensive, it brought with it a performance gain of some
10% compared to the pure software solution.
Additionally bugs have been fixed, so the game is now fully playable in most
levels.
The emphasis for the next months lies on the audio mixer, the sound effects and
the music. Furthermore there might be a chance to start work on the multi
player mode.
The full report is accessible through the title link.
It also contains new screenshots and a short video in MPEG format.

Amiga Forever 5.1 Released
Cloanto released today version 5.1 of
Amiga Forever, the official Amiga
emulation and connectivity package for PCs. New features include improved
emulation components, new Amiga and Windows software (e.g. new Software Manager,
Amiga Explorer, ReqTools, support libraries, etc.) and updated documentation and
help files. For the first time since 1991, when the Amiga Narrator and
Translator speech synthesis components were discontinued by Commodore (who
reportedly was not willing to continue to pay a $1 per unit royalty), this
software, which was part of the multimedia features which inspired several
enthusiasts to buy an Amiga computer, is again available with the Amiga OS.
Amiga Forever 5.1 includes both the original and fully licensed speech software
in the preinstalled 1.3 configuration and a newer custom setup in the 3.1 ROM
environment. As for all Amiga sound output, the emulation makes it possible to
save the digital data, so as to preserve forever (maybe for use on an answering
machine?) the original accent made famous by various
This is Amiga Speaking
demos.
Amiga Forever 5.1 runs on all Windows systems with
DirectX 8 or higher (DirectX 9
has just been released by Microsoft). A cross-platform edition is available for
Linux users. The downloadable versions costs $29.95, while a CD-ROM version,
which includes additional Amiga ROM and OS files of historical interest (e.g.
Amiga OS 1.0) and more than three hours of video footage in MPEG format, is
available for $59.95. Upgrades are also available now. A free update from
version 5.0 to version 5.1 will be available for Christmas. In the meantime, the
Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ) section at amigaforever.com has been reorganized and updated, and includes
up-to-date information and tips concerning Amiga emulation, data preservation
and cross-platform connectivity.

New Quake2 mods
Two new mods are downloadable on the Amiga Quake2 page:
- WarMod for PPC
- Asssault for PPC
- As well as an archive with a whole number of mods recompiled for 68k, you
still need the PPC archives and have to install the 68k mods over them. You can
use the 68k version's installer which does it automatically (if you add the
directory containing the 68k mod archives with "assign Mods: ... add" the
installation should work).

Astronomie: Digital Almanac III V5.0 available
After months of development the new version of the astronomy program Digital Almanac III has been finished.
In the moment only the German version is available. Because of the enormous amount of data the new version is only on CD-ROM available.
About 30 MB of new data has been added. The sidegrade price for registered users will be 10 EUR.
Some CD-ROMs of V5.0 have been delivered, but without German documentation. This can be downloaded from the homepage.
The English version will be delivered later, because the documentation will be finished soon.
New features:
- Leaner program
- New clear GUI layout
- Integration of Tyco-2 and GSC-2 star catalogue via Internet
- "Digitized Sky Survey"
- More online information from different object classes available
- Integration of Hertzsprung-Russell-diagram for spectralanalysis of stars
- Integration of the Hipparchos star catalogue as cross index
- Integration of the "Virtual Moon Atlas" (25 MB data)
- Integration of the Jupiter satellites J6-J13
- and many more...
This is the last version of DA III. It is based upon OS3.9 and needs a gfx-board and a lot of RAM. AGA will not be supported any more.
The last version for smaller Amigas and AGA users is V4.8.
All Amiga CPUs from 68020/FPU up to 68060 and PPC are supported. It also runs with WinUAE, AmigaXL and Amithlon.

Catweasel Software Updates
The Windows drivers for the PC-versions of the Catweasel controller
(ISA and the new MK3 PCI/Flipper versions) have been updated. The
most important change is the support for C64-disks, minor bugs have
been fixed in the diskimage-tool. The new combination of programs
also breaks a small record: A C64-disk is read completely in slightly
more than 9 seconds. The archive also contains some textfiles for
programmers who want to take advantage of the interfaces or the
SID of the controller.
Download: cw_win_pci.zip (115 KB)
The Linux drivers have also been adapted to the MK3 PCI/Flipper version.
Closer information about this can be found on
Michael 'Rawstyle' Krause's website.
Tim Mann has also adapted his cw2dmk tool to the new controller.
DMK is a file format used by TRS-80 emulator programs. Find out
more here.

WWW: Privoxy V3.0.0 for MorphOS
Jörg Strohmayer has released version 3.0.0 of his MorphOS port of the WWW proxy
'Privoxy'.
This is a multiuser proxy with extended filter features to protect your own
private sphere, filter Web contents, manage cookies, control access and
filter out adverts, banners, pop-ups and other unwanted contents.
As this is Jörg Strohmayer's first program for MorphOS/PPC, and he has no
developers documentation about MorphOS, and the public MorphOS GCC archives are
incomplete (parts of libnix are missing), he is asking to send bug reports directly to him by eMail
(joergs+mn@expires-2002-12-31.nexgo.de)
and not use the bug tracker at Sourceforge, except if the bug is also present in
the AmigaOS/m68k port.

Hardware: IBMs PowerPC 970 & Mai Logic Northbridges
In the December PowerPC newsletter, IBM has announced some news about the PowerPC 970.
According to it, the 'Power4' Server CPU's desktop descendant is to come with a vector unit which is compatible to Motorola's PowerPC 74xx's (PowerPC G4) AltiVec unit.
Among further features of the up to 1.8 GHz clockable Power PC 970 is the up to 900MHz fast processor interface which facilitates transfer rates of up to 6.4 GByte to the Northbridge.
Furthermore, the 64bit PowerPC 970 is said to also execute 32bit applications on the same performance level and in native mode.
32bit operating systems should be able to utilise the full performance of the PowerPC 970 CPU's 32bit mode with only small updates.
The first samples should be shipped to developers in the 2nd quarter of 2003.
Articia Northbridges:
The Articia-Northbridge's next generations are to be shipped to developers in the 1st quarter of 2003 (the 'Articia S' used in AmigaOne and Pegasos has been listed for comparison):
Articia S : 133 MHz Prozessorbus, 133 MHz SDRam, 2xAGP, 32-Bit PCI
Articia Sa: 166 MHz Prozessorbus, 333 MHz DDR-SDRam, 2xAGP, 64-Bit PCIX
Articia P: 166 MHz Prozessorbus, 333 MHz DDR-SDRam, 4xAGP, 64-Bit PCIX

Amiga Arena: Interview with Thomas Schulze/Dreamworlds (CrossfireII)
The Amiga market may be small but sometimes the Amiga users are surprised by publications of
hardware or software products who had nobody expected.
"Crossfire II" is one of these products. After a developing time of more than two and half a year where
the team had to fight against breaks and loss of data the full version of the game was published
on the "Amiga + Retro Computing 2002" in Aachen.
People who like the classical 2d shooters will love it because today this genre of game has almost
vanished.
"Crossfire II" is not only a simple shooting game but has various players modes and the single player
"story mode" where you have to face up single tasks as a pilot.
Please read the interview with the
developer "Thomas Schulze" from Dreamworlds what you can expect of "Crossfire II".
Olaf Köbnik: "I can recommend "Crossfire II" all those ones who like action shooters!"

Test Program MpegMasterPlayer (made with Hollywood)
Here comes a test program named MpegMasterPlayer (downloadable under the title link), which was put together with Hollywood. It's
really a player built on mpega. Further, I would like to state that this player and a few other programs originated only with this Amiga
editor, because the scripting language of Hollywood is very simple.
Attention: the archive includes only executables (no script data). Because of this you can't examine the program code. In order to modify
the program code, you'll need the complete Hollywood pack. Additionally the three most important libraries are in the archive, and
these are needed to run the executables. Because the player currently only supports Amithlon's Soundblaster 128, you won't hear any
music on a normal Amiga (so this should be seen as only a demo of what is possible with Hollywood). (ps) (Translation: dm)

Hollywood now available also for MorphOS (Update)
A native MorphOS version of Hollywood is now available. This PPC version
is of course much faster than the 68k one, so many effects can now be
displayed in real time at an acceptable speed (on 68k computers most of
the CPU intensive effects were precalculated and displayed then to make
them appear smoothly). It is already very fast on my Blizzard PPC with
200 MHz so it should really fly on a Pegasos system.
So you can create now cool applications, games and demonstrations even
for PPC and convert them also into native PPC executables! All Hollywood
CD-ROMs shipped from now, will contain the 68k and MorphOS PPC version.
If you already have the first edition of the Hollywood CD-ROM you can
request the MorphOS version of Hollywood from me by sending an e-mail to
me. By the way, if you want your Hollywood CD-ROM before Christmas, it
is high time to order now.
Update 14.12.2002:
Andreas Falkenhahn writes:
As I got some mails from people saying that they won't buy Hollywood
because I'm supporting MorphOS I have to clarify that there will be
AmigaOS4 version of Hollywood of course. But before this can happen,
I need a developer version of AmigaOS4 and because such a version does not
seem to be available currently, I cannot do anything yet. But there will
be definitely an AmigaOS4 version of Hollywood (if it is API compatible
to the classic AmigaOS). So, don't panic and don't send me any more
of such threatening letters. It's really astonishing how serious this topic
seems to be to some people. Additionally the update to the AmigaOS4
version of Hollywood will be free of charge too (as the update to the MorphOS
version was). So if you are interested in Hollywood, you can also buy the
program now and get the update for free when AmigaOS 4 is finally

More screen shots of Crossfire II
At the APC&TCP page there were more screen shots from the game Crossfire II published.
With the new screen shots it's even better to see that Crossfire is not a simple
shooter but a game with comlexe missions, much variations and a big
factor of addiction. The game is available at APC&TCP directly. (ps) (Translation: ub)

Solution of the bug in the CrossfireII version sold on the fair
Even returned from the fair, the first e-mails reached us. Unfortunately in haste to finish the work on Crossfire II still
before the fair an error occured. If you trie to start the program, bought on the fair, after the
installation the error message "... File not executable" appears. In order to solve
this problem, one has to select the menu option "instruction executes" from
the Workbench menu and input in each case one of the following two
lines:
protect <Ihr Crossfire2-Verzeichnis>/CF2 ADD RWED
protect <Ihr Crossfire2-Verzeichnis>/CF2_PPC ADD RWED
We would like to apologize for this error and hope for your
understanding. The update that will probably appear this week will contain this correction as well as MorphOS support
and German translation.
Thanks to all involved and supervisors of the
fair, particularly to Eternity, which exhibited "valley of
Tamar". Next year we will place the coffee. Promised.

LouiSe: PHP V4.2.3 (Standalone), CircleMUD V3.1
Already at the beginning of December, LouiSe had released ports of PHP V4.2.3
and CircleMUD V3.1 for 68k Amigas.
PHP V4.2.3:
This is a standalone (without WWW server) version of the script language PHP,
which is used in particular for generating dynamic Web pages.
CircleMUD V3.1:
CircleMUD is a multi user dungeon game
system (MUD) by Jeremy Elson which had originally been developed at the John
Hopkins University's Department of Computer Science and represents a derivative of
DikuMUD Gamma 0.0, which had been developed in 1990 by Katja Nyboe, Tom Madsen,
Hans Henrik Staerfeldt, Michael Seifert and Sebastian Hammer at the University
of Copenhagen.
MUDs are text based worlds, into which users log in through the Internet to
explore the worlds with an own character and interact with other characters.
More about this on the home page of CircleMUD.
The Amiga archive contains only the binaries - no lib, doc or other files. The
complete archive is available on
ftp://ftp.circlemud.org/.
There are binaries for 68020, 68040 and 68060.

GoldED Studio AIX: Service Pack 5, FACE/ON V0.9
Already on 6th December 2002, Dietmar Eilert had released service pack 5 for
his editor package 'GoldED Studio AIX' as well as version 0.9 of the theme
installer 'FACE/ON'.
Service Pack 5:
Service Pack 5
is available to registered users for free download. It is mainly a maintanance
upgrade, yet it also contains some fine tuning of the optics.
Prerequisite for this upgrade is GoldED Studio AIX SP3 or GoldED Barebones SP3.
Older installations can only be updated with the Service Pack CD.
Free versions:
The GoldED demo version available for free
download
has also been updated to Service Pack 5. These versions are restricted to a
text length of 1000 lines - yet the editor itself has no other functional
restrictions. The only things missing are some add-ons such as the gcc compiler
and the spell checker to keep the download size within limits.
FACE/ON V0.9
FACE/ON
is a theme installer for GoldED. With FACE/ON theme previews can be viewed and
the themes as well as alternative menus can be installed
(screenshot).
System requirements contain a gfx card and GoldED Studio AIX SP5 or GoldED
Barebones SP5.

ARC 2002: Pictures of the first day by amiga-news.de
Hilke made a bunch of photos at the ARC 2002. As you can see from the pictures and subtitles, the Pegasos was the
highlight of the show. However, until noon Thendic were busy setting up and
installing all in all 30 computers. After that the users were able to get a
picture of the Pegasos in conjunction with MorphOS.
The AmigaOne, however, was presented as well. Once at the stand of Amiga-Club and
at Vesalia's. In both cases the operationg system running was Linux. There were
no news to be gathered about AmigaOS. Yet I have clearly sounded out a tendency
with the users: Many look upon a Pegasos with AmigaOS as the optimal solution.

Chris Hodges: Time to say goodbye!
In his known humorous way Chris Hodges tells us that he'll be on vacation for the next seven weeks. He'll be in New Zealand till 2003, 24th January and has today uploaded an update for Poseidon with some bug fixes. Here's the original message:
Dear Poseidon users,
I'm leaving the Amiga. Yes, I've had enough of all that fighting and
bitching. Instead, I'll try to live on a green island with lots of sheep.
Good bye and farewell!
Now get up from the floor, stop crying, I'm only off to New Zealand for
about seven weeks of vacation and I will return to my one and only true
love (currently, just my Amiga :( ) on 24th January 2003. But before I'm
leaving on a jet plane, I've uploaded a small update of Poseidon for your
benefit. Not much has changed, however, a few bugfixes reported by some of
you have been incooperated. See changelog for details.
As I'm away from my machine, don't write private emails, if you have any
problems. Please use the Yahoo Mailing List instead, there are a lot of
people who could give a hand.
So, please enjoy the time off, I will certainly do so. And don't forget to
use Trident regularily >>>;-) (ps) (Translation: wk)

Gamel: ScummVM 0.3.0 released
Version 0.3.0 of the popular interpreter for Lucasarts games has been released today. On the download page are executables for several operating systems available including the MorphOS binary. A complete distribution with PDF manual and Ambient PNGIcons will be released probably tomorrow by me.
ScummVM MorphOS supports now also MIDI music that is qualitywise much better than the Adlib sound used until now. What is needed for this is the Etude MIDI device that I unfortunately can't make available for download yet. People who should see me today in Aachen at the beta tester conference may ask me for a version.
Regarding the legal issues with Lucasarts there's still no solution. A comprehensive description of the situation as it is right now can be found on the ScummVM site.
The improvements in detail:
0.3.0b (2002-12-06)
- fix major race condition resulting in extremely frequent crashes on MorphOS/PocketPC (supercedes unreleased 0.3.0 version)
0.3.0 (2002-12-01)
- massive cleanup work for iMUSE. Sam and Max music now plays correctly
- many bugfixes for Zak256, + sound and music support
- music support for Simon the Sorcerer on any platform with real MIDI
- experimental support for Indy3 (VGA) - Indiana Jones + Last Crusade
- completed support for Monkey1 VGA Floppy, The Dig
- added akos16 implementation for The Dig and Full Throttle costumes
- added digital iMUSE implementation for The Dig and Full Throttle music.
- Loom CD speech+music syncronisation improved greatly
- added midi-emulation via adlib, for platforms without sequencer support
- code seperation of various engine parts into several libraries
- several fixes to prevent Simon the Sorcerer crashing and hanging
- hundreds of bugfixes for many other games
- new SMUSH video engine, for Full Throttle and The Dig
- new in-game GUI
- launcher dialog

AROS: SVGA-driver and mascot Kitty
AMIGAplus wrote:
There is the first beta version of the new SVGA-graphic driver for the operating system AROS which can
be activated over the boot menu. The driver may not work on some computers but nevertheless it shows
what can be graphically possible. The current used 4bit VGA modus is supposed to be substituted by
the 16bit or 32bit SVGA modus.
Besides this Eric W. Schwartz has given the AROS project a mascot: Kitty
should be worth a look.

TV Card Software: AmithlonTV Beta 200
There's a new beta version (200) of AmithlonTV available for download from the AmithlonTV homepage.
AmithlonTV is a really, genuinely modularly built driver system for PCI TV cards. Only the necessary components and resources are loaded.
New cards unknown to AmithlonTV will be automatically detected and may be configured by the user. In order to do this the components of
the card are detected in a setup program.
The advantage of such a system is that a new driver for any specific component will function on any TV card that has the component. Special
modifications by me are generally unnecessary. We won't be involving ourselves with a bunch of supported cards that haven't been tested.
AmithlonTV will run on practically any card. When certain components haven't been added they just haven't been added, but the rest of the
card works.
A further advantage of AmithlonTV is that multiple cards are supported. Two, three, or more are possible. This is easily managed and may
be used in a security system. It is all the same if one wants a picture from each, or a channel list to switch between cards.
The entire system is built so modularly that USB and Firewire may be possible. At this time there is support for the powerpci.library (Amithlon).
The openpci.library support is currently implemented and functioning but is not yet officially available.
What's new:
As is already known through other channels, Amithlon TV has a VHI_Studio driver. Your computer will become a multimedia center, especially
with the new accelerated functions of VHI Studio version 6.0.
The channel seeker has also been greatly accelerated. In contrast to other options (such as Windows software) there is a real channel seeker
here that doesn't just check for channels, but also VCRs and satellite receivers that are found between channels.
There are other small improvements in the works.
Especially noteworthy are the new audio drivers. All MSP cards should work with these.
The new Hauppauge drivers achieve an automatic configuration, whereby the copying of special configuration data occurs.
You'll find a lot more information by clicking on the title link!

Eyetech Reply to BBRV open post
Under the title link you can read the reaction of
Eytech (the developer of the
AmigaOne board) about the Thendic statement
"...April, Mai and teamwork...". Read the complete statement from Alan also
here:
I'm afraid Buck has exceeded even his usual level of bullshit and innuendo
on this one.
My take on this:
Our announcement of the G4 availability and pricing, and of the (solved)
Articia problem at the WoA SE was not what he expected. Since then we have
been innundated for dealership agreements from ex-Amiga dealers who have
(and their customers have) good memories of the Amiga OS and a growing
hatred of Windows. The polls, such as they, are show that the A1-XE G4 is by
far the most popular PPC platform for the Amiga community and this must also
have been a bit of a shock. (Is it also a coincidence that we've been the
recipients of an intense, targeted virus campaign since then, I wonder?)
Meanwhile Hyperions work on PPCBoot and linux has allowed the Teron
reference boards to get to a level where they can be usefully sold in the
Linux Market. As most on this list will know we have the rights to
distribute these boards in Europe and now Terrasoft do in the US. (We also
have distribution rights on the Teron based designs for the Amiga marker
worldwide). This has knackered Thendics plans for world domination of the
PPC Linux market.
Reading between the lines it seems that they are prepared to drop MorphOS
altogether if they can get their hands on OS4 to at least salvage something.
Buck plans to do this by suing Amiga Inc (for what?) and bribing us to
abandon the AmigaOne and Hyperion to port OS4 to the pegasos hardware .
Sorry, thats not on. You can only have sensible business arrangements with
people who are trustworthy and behave with integrity. There are plenty of
instances (which are inappropriate to reveal here) where these principles
have been completely abandoned on his side.
On their so-called relationship with MAI, we/hyperion have done more to help
MAI get the Teron design to the linux market than ever bplan have, alltough
I don't doubt that Gerald Carda made an important contribution to
identifying the Articia bug - I've every respect for him as a hardware
engineer.
As far as Thendic making their own boards is concerned thats a complete
joke. Its a matter of public record that Thendic-France incorporated as a
one-man company with the minimum 7500 euros of capital. Thendic, like us and
MAI do not actually make anything themselves, manufacture is all
subcontracted. In our case its to a Tiawanese specialist, in Thendic's its
to DCE. Based on our past experience of quality assurance and after sales
service from DCE I personally would never buy any DCE manufactured products
for resale again.
Well you did ask
Alan

Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck (ANF)
|
Statement from Thendic about April, Mai and teamwork in the Amiga market
Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck of Thendic France sent us an email to gain the attention for an important comment they both posted at the comments of
amiga.org (see title link). For simplicity we repeat the statement which they gave about the collaboration opportunities within the Amiga market:
OK, last word before Aachen Show....
The is no Mai without April. The Articia does not work as promoted. There. We have said it.
Everything that has been promised for the AmigaOne and the Pegasos will not work without
April -- April is *mostly* a "patch." With April the Articia will work as advertised,
without April the Articia will not. Betatesters of the A1 and the "Betatester (Pegasos)"
know that there are difficulties.
In September and October bplan developed the "patch" with Mai. There is no other patch for
the Articia and there was no other assistance from anyone else in creating it. This is why
the Pegasos, A1 and Teron are not available in quantity and why they will not be until the
patch is mounted on the respective PCBs and shipped.
Check out the estimated shipping dates at the YDL site. Do you think they will get anywhere
else sooner? Where is the biggest market? Is it MorphOS and OS4, or is it LinuxPPC? Where
do you think Mai will focus? Not here (MorphOS/OS4)! Our sales commitments for the first
1000 Pegasos went 817 to Linux and the rest to this community (less two for OpenBSD and
two for OpenBeOS).
Mai does not care about this market. They care about the Linux market. They want to sell
the Articia and their board. They make chips and want to sell them. LinuxPPC is a bigger
market for them. That will be their new focus. We are the poor stepchild now. Please
forget all the delusions about the new Amiga or the Pegasos that will re-conquer the world
when the hardware shows up. If we want success this is going to be hard work and a long
haul.
In the meanwhile, you won't have to worry about MorphOS or OS4 being pirated by someone
here now. There is a whole new world of potential users with an OpenSource/Freeware
mentality that is about to consume this market and make it more irrelevant. This is a
post-Napster world.... and Napster was only the beginning. Individual "freedom" has
replaced respect for others. Something is wrong with this picture and it needs to be
fixed, but it will not happen with dongles.
If this community wants a future it needs to start working together. We are spending
plenty of money to make the Pegasos successful, but it is not our final focus. We are
a niche market -- both OS4 and MorphOS. We need unity if we want to be more than a
lingering historical footnote.
The Mai story is not over yet. The first patch is not enough. We figured this out in
November when Mai was scurrying back to Tiawan to make what they thought would be the
final solution. It is not. There are more problems. We finally solved all this a week
and a half ago. Plus, we have added a couple of other features that are better
accomplished in hardware than software (and don't believe a few lines of code will make
the first patch work). If YDL sets off on their current course, they will "crash and
burn" in a month after they finally introduce the product. The Linux market is
unforgiving when it comes to hardware bugs. With all the success they will seem to
achieve their liability will grow correspondingly.
Before you think this is another marketing stunt, here is something new. We know what
Eyetech pays for the Teron/A1; we know what the A1 distributors pay. We would be
willing to match the prices all around less 5% and provide an immediate solution to
the community. We make the Pegasos. Eyetech does not. We have many of the same
distributors. We can compensate Allan Redhouse through his success (something he is
clearly about to loose with YDL Teron pricing). Hyperion too. Oh yes, you want to
buy a G4 A1? Wake up people! Read the disclaimers on the YDL site. Do you understand
what needs to happen before this will? There is a Pegasos G4 now. The question is not
how fast the processor *can* work, the issue is how fast the processor *does* work!
Let's get better organized. We are about to be crushed.
If we pulled eveyone together on this we might even honor those $50 coupons!
This market and community is in complete confusion. There is no leadership or vision
and we need both fast or we can forget it. This is a public statement in good faith
to Eyetech and Hyperion. Allan and Ben are formidible marketing opponents. We can
forget the past if you can. We need to get into the same boat. Amiga Inc. has lost
its leadership mantel. Selling coupons, promoting unachievable concepts and making
wild claims about the next deal have worn tired and false. Fortunately, all have not
blindly followed this route and Hyperion and Eyetech have a solid agreement in place
that protects them in the event of Amiga Inc bankruptcy. And, before you think this
is a "group hug" thing, we have paid our King County, Washigton legal counsel a
retainer. We will commence legal action against Amiga Inc. this month. This is not
some "get legal" BS. This is business and the Amiga Inc. management do not understand
what business is. They "blew it" and we have had enough of their interference in our
future.
The whole Mai/YDL collaboration has changed the situation dramatically. We hope this
statement helps you understand this better.
We will give Hyperion a board. We will support the A1 Betatesters as we have our own.
We don't have to trade sources or get Ralph having a beer with Ben, but we could all
move ahead this way. Eyetech can certify the Pegasos to meet Amiga specifications --
they are positioned to do this. Hyperion and Eyetech can promote OS4. Great. We might
even develop some collaborative efforts quickly. We should.
Things are moving very fast. We have alot to do. Thanks for reading this post and
please think about it carefully. See you in Aachen!
Sincerely,
Raquel and Bill

Elbox: Spider USB 2.0 working in High-Speed mode
Elbox is pleased to inform that development of the USB EHCI High-Speed
driver for the Spider USB 2.0 card for Mediator busboards has been completed.
The new Spider EHCI driver provides all three USB speeds: High-Speed,
Full-Speed and Low-Speed.
Up to now the EHCI controller (the main part of the Spider USB 2.0
controller) was not activated. The Spider cards worked as two independent
OHCI (USB 1.1) controllers with 5 USB ports. Now you can take advantage
of the EHCI (USB 2.0) and two OHCI (USB 1.1) controllers included in
the Spider board.
The first public demonstration of the Spider USB 2.0 PCI card working
in the Mediator system in the High-Speed (USB 2.0) mode will have place
in the AMIGA+RETRO Computing 2002 show in Aachen on 07 December 2002.
During the show, Spider USB 2.0 PCI cards will be available for purchase,
exclusively at the Vesalia Computer stand. Contact Vesalia before the show
to make sure the Spider USB 2.0 cards will not run out of the show stock
before you have one for yourself.
Spider USB 2.0, the fastest and most advanced USB solution for Amiga
computers, will be presented with various USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices
like USB HDD, USB ZIP, USB CD, USB card reader/writer, USB keyboard
and USB mice. Spider USB 2.0 will be working in the PCI slot of
the Mediator PCI 1200 SX.
All the registered Spider USB 2.0 High-Speed card users will receive the
new Spider EHCI driver as a FREE software update just after the
AMIGA+RETRO Computing 2002 show.

ARC 2002 News: New hardware vendor "Creative Development"
The recently founded company Creative Development
will presumably show a
new USB card called Ultrabus for classic Amiga computers at the AMIGA + RETRO COMPUTING 2002
show at the booth of Vesalia. "Ultrabus" has got four USB ports and can
be used in Zorro Amigas as well as on the clockport of an Amiga 1200. In
Zorro mode, a flash memory with 512k capacity can hold the complete USB
stack, so USB devices are available right after a cold boot. This enables
booting from USB storage devices.

Route planner: AmiATLAS 6 - new version for ARC 2002
The AmiATLAS Development Team writes:
"A new version of AmiATLAS 6 will be released for the Aachen show!
Although over the last months most of the remaining Amiga users have been very
reserved in their purchase behaviour, probably not least of all hoping for new
hardware, work on AmiATLAS 6 has been going on continuously...
For the show, a new edition will be released with fully updated (as per 4th
quarter 2002) and expanded data stock. Now, among other things, with the most
current touristic information and some more, like infos about number plates of
all supported countries.
That's an increase of about 200%, compared to the old version!
Not forgetting the updated map material, e.g. Germany now with the complete
Autobahn network with all clearances until end of 2002!
In the program itself, lots of reported bugs have been fixed and some
optimisations implemented, and of course, as far as possible, some users'
wishes realised. Supported languages now are German, English, French and
Italian.
The new version of AmiATLAS 6 including new improved cover design has already
been shipped in sufficient quantities to KDH Datentechnik and IOSPIRIT for sale
at the show. APC & TCP will also have some copies.
Due to organisational reasons, updates can only be shipped shortly after the
show. And of course, as always, only to registered users of AmiATLAS 6.
Please mail requests or wishes to:
AmiATLAS@gmx.net"
