MorphOS status
After MorphOS got attention by small pictures on their homepage (AmigaNews reported), there is now
a small status report on the project itself:
We are currently working on rewriting as many elemental parts of the AmigaOS as possible directly in
PowerPC code. The tests of the 68k emulation have been finished already for some time, and it works
reliable with Workbench 3.1 and 3.5. CyberGraphX, the CS PPC SCSI driver, the CDrive CD-ROM file
system and other stuff has almost completely been ported natively, to achieve best possible performance
even on the current CS PPC card generation.
The ppc.library has also been completed in a full PowerPC version (means the former 68k part is native,
too), so direct compatibility to PowerUP software is ensured, and available software is working directly
without special MorphOS adjustments. For software adhering to the original PowerUP specs there
shouldn't be a problem at all.
Since everything is running directly on the PowerPC CPU, the infamous CPU context switches for 68k
AmigaOS are removed, so PowerUP software is frequently running faster. Programs with many I/O
accesses or graphics output via AmigaOS can profit from this.
We are just now testing several PowerUP software products, and will soon publish a guideline as
well as a list of successfully tested software, so PowerUP software can employed under MorphOS
without problems.
We are working on a developer release; due to several hardware defects, the release date was
sadly delayed.
