Real time strategy: Settlers II DVD not readable under AmigaOS 3.2.3
The AmigaOS versions 3.1.4 and 3.2 released by Hyperion contained a backport of the CDFS from AmigaOS 4 as the CD file system. This was created by Jörg Strohmeyer, who left the OS4 team a good 15 years ago due to non-payment and, according to his own statements, had prohibited Hyperion from continuing to distribute his code. Furthermore, he says the licence that Hyperion had for his OS contributions was limited to systems with PowerPC processors, which meant that distribution of a 68k port was not legal anyway. After Strohmeyer made his claims public, the AmigaOS 3.2 team announced that it would remove his code from the distribution. This change was implemented with the update to 3.2.3 released in April: the previous CD file system was replaced by a slightly revised version of the original Commodore CDFS, which had been developed for the CD32, among other things.
However, this new/old file system has a few limitations compared to Strohmeyer's version: Audio tracks can no longer be accessed at the file system level, and support for UDF or hybrid discs is no longer available. Buyers of the real time strategy strategy game Settlers II, which was released on Amiga 40 last weekend, are now finding that their DVD is unreadable under the latest version of AmigaOS 3.2 - the reason being the lack of UDF support in the "new" CD file system.
As Settlers II's publisher "Look Behind You" has informed us, this problem only affects systems running AmigaOS 3.2.3: computers running AmigaOS 4, older versions of AmigaOS 3 - including AmigaOS 3.5/3.9 - or third-party solutions such as AllegroCDFS, CacheCDFS or the free DVD-RAM are not affected. AmiCDFS should also be able to read the DVD, but this has not been tested. In addition, every purchaser will automatically receive a download link for a purely digital version of Settlers II. This archive, which is around 1.3 GB in size, can be transferred manually to the Amiga if necessary. (cg)
