Games That Weren't

Amiga Games That Weren't: Darkland
"Darkland" was an advanced action role-playing game developed by New Deal Productions in the early 1990s. The game was intended for the Amiga, but never reached commercial release.

Thanks to the website "Games That Weren't", which specialises in unreleased games, new insights into the development of "Darkland" are now available. The website recently discovered extensive material, including screenshots, concept art and detailed information on the planned game mechanics. The project was heavily inspired by titles like "Shadow of the Beast" and promised a mix of combat, puzzles and exploration. According to "Games That Weren't", it is unclear whether a version of Darkland was released for the Atari ST.

Although the game was never released for the Amiga, the newly discovered materials provide a fascinating insight into what might have been. (nba)

PDF magazine: REV'n'GE 166 (Italian/English)
Besides the Italian original issue, the PDF magazine REV'n'GE ("Retro Emulator Vision and Game") is also available in English. The magazine's reviews compare, if available, the different ports of classic games to the various platforms of their time. Furthermore a focus is on rather unknown retro games.

The latest issue 166 contains numerous game reviews for other retro systems as well as a review of the Polish Amiga game "Cyber Kick". (nba)

Video: Interview with "Ports of Call" developer Rolf-Dieter Klein
Rolf-Dieter Klein set new benchmarks for manager simulations with "Ports of Call", developed by him and Martin Ulrich and released in 1987 under the Aegis label. In the YouTube video interview with Magisthans Spielekiste, Klein provides insights into the development of this ship management game, the challenges faced during development and the compromises made during the creation process.

Of particular interest are the concept art images, which have not been shown before and are being exclusively presented in the video. The video also offers a glimpse of possible new versions of the game.

The interview is held in German, but subtitled in English, making it accessible to an international audience. (nba)

Amiga-500-Guide: Version 2 of the manual for (re-) beginners (German)
Last year Patrick Schwedt wrote a German PDF file with all kinds of tips for those who have bought an Amiga 500 for the first time or are starting to use it again after a long time. Version 2 is now available on Aminet, which has been expanded and now contains 61 pages. Almost all the pictures have been revised. A new feature is an illustrated guide to installing hardware extensions.

Picture collection: Update of the Amiga Graphics Archive
The "Amiga Graphics Archive" is dedicated to all kinds of pixel graphics created with the Commodore Amiga between 1985 and 1995 (amiga-news.de reported).

In this January update, some level graphics were added for the game StarRay and, for comparison, the graphics of the Atari ST version, as these are better than the Amiga version despite the technical disadvantages. (dr)
