Unfinished R-Type clone: Thesius XII
In Autumn 2003 the team of Underware Design released the R-Type clone "Thesius XII" which they did not finish. According to the authors "this version is basically a 3 level edition of the game, minus the final two levels (which are no where near complete) and lots of polish" and for some time is available on their website. Tutorial: Raspberry Pi as PPP-server for the Amiga (Update 2)
An blog entry explains how you can use a Raspberry Pi with a cheap TTL-to-RS232-converter as a PPP server for an Amiga. The Amiga is connected to the single board computer using a regular RS 232 serial cable und is using a TCP stack - the tourial is using Miami as an example - to connect to the network.

Update: (25.05.2016, 15:20, cg)

The blog is hosted on the author's Raspbery Pi, which apparently can't handle the current amount of visitors very well. The website keeps disappearing for short periods of time.

Update: (26.05.2016, 22:15, cg)

A different Blog describes pretty much the same setup, apart from using the free AmiTCP 4.0 available from Aminet as a TCP stack on the Amiga. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Arcade racing game Amiga Racer 3.1 (AmigaOS 4/MorphOS)
Over the update function included in Michael Neitzel's Lotus clone "Amiga Racer", players get new features. Currently version 3.1 provides the first modules required for the multiplayer mode. Registered users also get a new Hungarian scenario, which is the 8th for Amiga Racer:

The next update is planned for May 22nd which will add the function "live weather": Then the weather conditions in the scenarios will correspond to the weather conditions in reality which means if it rains in England for real then in the corresponding scenario of the Amiga Racer game it also rains. This also applies to the time of day.

Amiga Racer is available for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS as well as for other operating systems, a version for classic Amigas also is planned. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Hollywood: RapaGUI 1.0

Rapid Cross-Platform GUI Development On All Islands

Press release: This is the game changer you've been waiting for! Airsoft Softwair is proud to present its most ambitious Hollywood plugin yet: RapaGUI - a cross-platform GUI toolkit that allows the creation of native (!) GUIs for AmigaOS (MUI), Windows, Linux (GTK), and Mac OS X based systems! This is a real killer plugin and truly a world's first because RapaGUI is the first cross-platform GUI toolkit to support Amiga-based systems with MUI as well. This is surely a dream come true for many Amiga users! In fact, RapaGUI is a MUI Royale spin-off with the killer app twist. Like in MUI Royale, GUI layouts in RapaGUI are conveniently defined in XML files which are then converted into full-blown GUIs by RapaGUI on-the-fly. It just doesn't get any easier!

MUI Royale and RapaGUI are very similar in their design. Thus, porting scripts from one to another is not much of an effort. A detailed migration guide from MUI Royale to RapaGUI is included in the RapaGUI manual. Note that for Amiga-only apps MUI Royale is still the number one choice because it allows you to access almost all of MUI's features whereas RapaGUI's focus is on full portability which is why its API represents the lowest common denominator between the Amiga, Windows, Linux and Mac OS X GUI toolkits. All MUI fans will be happy to see that RapaGUI's API was heavily inspired by the MUI API so that you can now use the world-famous MUI API to write GUIs for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X as well!

RapaGUI uses an object-oriented design composed of over 40 MOAI (Magic Omnigui Architecture Interface) classes. Those MOAI classes constitute the heart of RapaGUI. All GUI elements supported by RapaGUI (windows, widgets, menu bars...) are simply objects derived from those MOAI classes. By wrapping the diverse native OS GUI APIs into platform-independent MOAI classes, those classes reduce the many faces of the different OS GUI APIs into just a single MOAI API face, carved in stone by RapaGUI!

RapaGUI supports all the widgets you need to create modern GUI applications, including multi-column listviews, treeviews, tabbed page widgets, toolbars, status bars, text editor widgets, menu bars, HTML views and much more. The highlight of RapaGUI, however, is certainly its inbuilt Hollywood MOAI class. This class allows dynamic embedding of complete Hollywood displays into GUIs which can be used to combine Hollywood's powerful multimedia functionality with RapaGUI's GUI abilities into one powerful application.

RapaGUI comes with almost 300 pages of documentation in various formats like PDF, HTML, AmigaGuide, and CHM that describes the GUI programming basics in detail and provides a convenient MOAI function and class reference. A step-by-step tutorial that guides you to your first RapaGUI program is also included. On top of that, almost 20 example scripts are included in the distribution archive, including advanced scripts like a complete video player which really show off the power of Hollywood and RapaGUI working together.

All this makes RapaGUI the ultimate cross-platform GUI toolkit, carefully crafted for you sailors of the seven GUI seas! Only RapaGUI allows rapid cross-platform GUI development on all islands - it is the ultimate fusion of all the different OS GUI toolkits into one MOAI face, carved in stone for eternity and beyond.

RapaGUI is the fourth plugin to bear the "Powered by Hollywood 6.0" seal of quality as it utilizes the new display adapter plugin interface introduced with Hollywood 6.0. That's why we here at Airsoft Softwair say: Life starts at 6.0. Since RapaGUI requires a few enhancements introduced in Hollywood 6.1, you need at least Hollywood 6.1 to use RapaGUI. RapaGUI is available free of charge and can be downloaded from the official Hollywood portal at the title link. Versions for AmigaOS 3.x, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AROS, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux are provided. AmigaOS users please do note that although RapaGUI is still compatible with MUI 3.8, it is highly recommended to install MUI 4.0 to use all of RapaGUI's features.

Alien Breed clone: Prototype of new "Chaos Guns" engine
Originally "Chaos Guns" was meant to be a multiplayer shooter, a mix of Alien Breed and Hired Guns. Two years ago, a first demo version was released. Shortly afterwards the only programmer did back out. According to the team in a blog entry, meanwhile for a new programmer was looked and the concept of the game was completely reconsidered and simplified.

The old engine Chaos Guns, which was written in the exotic language PowerD, was far too demanding for Amiga computers. Therefore the graphics have been reduced from 256 to 32 colours and a classic tile-base model used. The Multiplayer theme "had to go" but the functional inventory and items management was reworked.

In order to be able testing the changes, different prototypes have been developed. At first there were some internal versions created with the Windows-based Game Maker, now also a playable version for the Amiga was released using Backbone (Youtube video).

The Backbone prototyope is meant to demonstrate the concept of the game to prove "that a full game using Backbone IS possible". The proper game will be written in computer code, which the Slovakian programmer Jozef Tomka will do.

The prototype is available in three different versions which differ from the size of the section of the playfield. Version A features the biggest section of the playfield but does not run smoothly on a 68030.

Download:

ChaosGunsBBDemo.lha (7 MB) (all three versions)
ChaosGunsBBDemo-A.lha (2 MB) (biggest section of the playfield

Graphic card: Picasso II+ clone "Matzes-GraKa" available
For quite some time, Matthias "Matze" Heinrichs has been working on clone of the Picasso II+. Now in the Kryoflux store such a graphic card can be bought. Matzes-Graka has the same performance like the original card - a Cirrus GD5434 graphic chip with 2 MB RAM is also used - but is "about 25% faster than a Picasso II+ in an A2000 with A2630 accelerator board".

The card also can be used in an Amiga 500 - after soldering the expansion port connector. It has an integrated monitor switcher, which switches between Amiga and VGA signal. Matzes-GraKa consists of two parts (mainboard and slot sheet with VGA-port) which are connected with a flat ribbon cable. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: Free Pascal updated
In 2004 Karoly 'Chain-Q' Balogh ported the compiler Free Pascal to MorphOS and two years later for the first time adapted it to AmigaOS 4. Based on Marcus 'ALB42' Sackrow's version of Free Pascal for AROS, MorphOS and AmigaOS 3.x he has adapted the latest version for AmigaOS 4. Completed by Marcus Sackrow the compiler now is available for all platforms.

Datatype: WarpTIFF 45.9
Again after five years, Oliver Roberts has released another update of his WarpTIFF-datatypes for AmigaOS 3.x, WarpUp, AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS which are sold as Shareware.

Changes in version 45.9:
  • Can now load image files conforming to the BigTIFF specification
  • Added JPEG AltiVec speed optimizations for the AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS versions making decoding speed of baseline images 1.5x faster on a G4 and 1.9x faster on a PA6T, with fancy upsampling off, on average. These optimizations can be toggled off/on using the new USE_ALTIVEC setting
  • JPEG Huffman decoder in PowerPC versions is now 5-10% faster
  • Applications may now configure the datatype settings via a local variable, overriding any global user settings present in ENV:
  • Replaced usage of old Exec and Dos AmigaOS 4 functions with the new ones
  • Updated with libtiff 4.0.6, zlib 1.2.8 and jpeglib 9b
  • AmigaOS 4 version and MorphOS AltiVec code recompiled with GCC 5.2.0
  • MorphOS and WarpOS versions recompiled with VBCC 0.9d

AmigaOS 4: "Enhancer Software" updates system files and tools
In a press release A-EON has announced the availability of the software bundle "Enhancer Software". In the late 1980s Commodore did sell OS-updates for AmigaOS 1.x - obviously A-EON tries to avoid using the name "OS-update": Enhancer Software is a collection of tools, commodities, classes, datatypes and library "with the aim of enhancing the AmigaOS experience". Included are:

Drivers and file systems:
  • Warp3D Nova: pre-release, inclusive free updates
  • RadeonHD-Treiber: Adapted for Nova in version v1 or v2, depending on the desired edition
  • SmartFilesystem 2
Tools:
  • X-Dock: A new dock
  • updated version of AmiDVD
  • MultiEdit: New text editor featuring tabs
  • MultiViewer 2.2: Among others image thumbnails added
  • updated version of the partition wizard
  • TuneNet: updated version, the user-interface now supports "4.1 FE features", the new classes InfoWindow and Progressbar (s.b.) are used. Only available as part of the Enhancer Software.
  • CANDI: Different versions, depending on the desired edition
  • InfoWindow Tool
System:
  • Updated version of the notification system Ringhio: Sound and colorwheel support, individual app configuration, several bug fixes
  • Format with SFS-support
Commodities:
  • ClipViewer: A clipboard manager
  • Exchanger: A commodity and application manager which can show, hide (iconify) or quit programms, display the Workbench information requester for the particular program or which can enable and disable commodities
C-commands:
  • RequestChooser: Shows a text - e.g. a software licence - "in a scrollable window and obtain a response via standard requester buttons"
Gadgets and classes:
  • InfoWindow class
  • Optionbutton gadget class
  • PieChart gadget class
  • ProgressBar gadget class
  • SharedImage class
Datatypes:
  • SimpleHTML Datatype
"Enhancer Software" is available in two editions. The cheaper version is delivered with a limited version of CANDI (four animated Workbench backgrounds and the first generation of the RadeonHD driver). For an additional charge the full versions of CANDI as well as the latest version of the RadeonHD driver can be purchased.

According to an user the standard version can be purchased for 51.35 Euro, the "plus"-edition is available for 62.40 Euro. If you have already purchased single parts of the bundle, you will get a discount on the Appstore. In this regard the shop system still seems to have some technical problems.

Soon Amiga Enhancer is supposed to be sold in a box. A version for AmigaOS 3 also was announced. Further information are available in A-EONs new Wiki under wiki.amiga.org. As you can see there, the logo of amiga.org now is used for commercial products like the Enhancer Software. (cg) (Translation: dr)

'Amiga' no longer a registered trademark in Germany
All over the world more than 60 Amga related trademarks are still registered with various local trademark offices (overview, PDF). For the vast majority of them, the owner is listed as 'Amiga Inc., New York'. But the registration of a trademark has to be renewed in regular intervalls by its owner - usually every ten years - otherwise the mark gets deleted.

Since Amiga Inc. doesn't take care of that process anymore, Amiga trademark registrations have been deleted for several years already. So far, only superfluous registrations or marks in less relevant markets like Bulgaria had been affected. But from 2016 to 2018, all relevant trademark registrations in the important markets are about to expire, and the German marks are taking the lead: The registration period for the figurative mark 'Amiga' aswell as the word marks 'Amiga' and 'Amiga OS' ended in 2015.

As the German Trademark Office (DPMA, Deutsches Marken- und Patentamt) tells us, the actual expiry of a registration is followed by a grace period of six months, during which the original owner can reregister a trademark. After that, it takes another few weeks until the status of a registration is actually changed to 'expired' in the DPMA database. In fact, the DPMA register lists the figurative mark Amiga as 'deleted' and the word mark Amiga had already been deleted some six months ago. Amiga OS on the other hand will still be considered a registered Mark for a few more months.

Despite that, 'Amiga' isn't up for grabs yet in Germany - the European Intellectual Property Office also has a registration for an 'Amiga' trademark (file number 000815779) that only expires in 2018 and is valid in all countries of the European Union. (cg) (Translation: cg)

AlternativeTo.net (ANF)

Software directory: AlternativeTo.net supports Amiga platforms
AlternativeTo.net helps searching for software alternatives. For instance, when you switch from Windows to Linux, you can check what is a free Microsoft Word alternative for that operating system.

Since yesterday the service also lists programs for AmigaOS, MorphOS and AROS. The database depends on third party submissions, thus (after registration) there is a form to add further software. (snx)

Free hardware: Atari-USB Joystick-Adapter
Stefan 'Develin' Blixth has developed an adapter which connects classic joysticks with the USB-port of modern computers. The adapter does not require any additional drivers, the included firmware can be updated directly over the USB-port.

The open source V-USB is used as firmware. His PCB-layout Blixth also has made available under the GPL. The developer is going to sell assembled adapters but asks you for some patience. All those who are going to buy such a adapter, please contact Blixth via eMail. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Meta compiler: PortablE r6-04-26-2016 (beta)
Christopher Handley's meta compiler PortablE is a "recreation of the Amiga E programming language" providing many improvements. It can be used on AmigaOS4, AROS, MorphOS and Windows.

Changes since the last release:
  • Built-in procedures can now support unlimited parameters (although only some have been updated to use this ability)
  • Improved MUI & ReAction modules to use procedures with unlimited parameters (instead of immedate tag lists). So the C/C++ code generated for GUIs is now human-readable!
  • Added the NoListOptim switch, so that the code generated for Immediate Lists can be more human-readable
  • AmigaOS4: Added the 'intuition/menuclass' module, aka "AISS menus", and the example program "Examples/Amiga/OS4_ReAction/MenuClass.e"
  • When a bug exception was thrown during compilation, it could give the wrong message. Now fixed
  • Fixed a few module bugs
