MorphOS: Donation for G5-port achieved
With the donated amount of currently 3186,77 Euro the condition of three thousand Euro for the port of MorphOS to PowerMac computers with G5-processor was achieved (amiga-news.de reported).

500 Euro of the initiator Wiktor 'Pampers' Głowacki are included because differently from what was originally expected he had not to provide the hardware. Instead of it two G5-computers will be donated by AmigaDave: Additional to the 2,0-GHz-model M9747LL/A a M9749LL/A with 2,7 GHz as well. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Amiga Future asking for feedback for their hundredth issue
Andreas Magerl writes: issue 99 has just been published, we're already working on the next one. As this will be Amiga Future 100, we'd like to hear from you: how and when did you learn about Amiga Future? Why are you reading it (or not reading it)? What did you always want to tell us, and what do you wish for in the future?

We created some space in the crypt, so Higgins can reply to all your letters in issue 100. We'd really appreciate if you could write him at Higgins@amigafuture.de, the sooner the better. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Video: Trevor Dickinson (A-Eon) about AmigaOne X1000, Warp 3D and LibreOffice
Robert Bernardo has recorded Trevor Dickinson's presentation on the AmiWest 2012 (18.-21. October, Sacramento) and uploaded it to blip.tv (requires Flash) and IntuitionBase. Here is a little summary of the speech.

AmigaOne X1000

Currently the third production run is made. Until January all computers will be delivered to the customers. Dickinson called that a "probably last production run". He said that there is no shortage of PASemi-CPUs - but they cost 975 US-Dollar which makes the production of further computers unlikely.

Dickinson explained that the current production makes a loss of 475 US-Dollar on each computer.

Further PPC-based motherboards

Nonetheless there are plans for new hardware. In future processors made by Freescale will be used. A "Mid-Range-Product" with a Quadcore-CPU with 1,5 Ghz is considered as well as a "High-Level-Product" with a Dualcore-processor with 2.2 Ghz. But it will still take some time before it will be ready for the market.

LibreOffice

Thomas Frieden was introduced as chief operator for the LibreOffice-port but Dickinson several time mentioned the "Friedens". Currently it is spare time project. The development was started one month ago. Results can be expected only in distant future. The finished port is supposed to be sold, "probably" as package with other software.

Warp 3D-driver for Radeon HD

For Radeon HD 5000/6000 graphic boards currently Warp 3D-drivers are deevloped. Dickinson had hoped to present the finished drivers on the AmiWest but he expects the drivers to be released soon. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: HivelyTracker 1.7
HivelyTracker is a tracker based on the AHX-format. AHX was developed in the 90s to be able writing songs which are similar to the typical chip-sound of the SID (sound chip of the C64).

In version 1.7 two minor bugs were fixed. Additionally now there is a SDL-based version which makes ports to Windows and Mac OS possible. (cg) (Translation: dr)

AmigaOS 4: Midi-Sequencer BarsnPipes 0.7.1
Lyle Hazelwood who has taken over the development of the AmigaOS 4-version of the MIDI-sequencer BarsnPipes of Alfred Faust has released a first minor update of the programm. Changes in version 0.7.1:
  • You no longer need LhA in the C directory
  • The multiple CAMD in and out tools have been replaced with a single CAMD_In and CAMD_Out pipetools. These no longer read ENVARC: for camd cluster names. Each tool may have any CAMD cluster, no limits.

This version is not backward compatible to previous releases of BarsnPipes. On the AmiWest the author had announced to adapt all extensions little by little.

It is not certain if this version can import saved BarsnPipes-projects. The author recommends to hide the Tools-directory so no tools are loaded. MIDI-files can be imported with the tool "sMerFF".

In future the CAMD-support is supposed to be improved as well as a modern graphical user-interface to be created. (cg) (Translation: dr)

MorphOS: Bounty for a port to PowerMac-computers with G5-CPU
The Polish MorphOS website morphos.pl collects money which will be used to pay the developer Mark "Bigfoot" Olsen for writing a port of MorphOS to PowerMacs with a CPU PPC970FX ("G5").

The MorphOS-Team several times announced a port for G5-computers (1, 2, 3) but never came true.

The port will be started if 3000 Euro has been collected. The Macintosh computer is donated by Wiktor "Pampers" Glowacki from morphos.pl. Bounty requirements are as follows:
  • The port of MorphOS must work on one model of PowerMac G5: : A1047 (7,3 - M9747LL/A) with 2,0 Ghz. Support of other PowerMac G5 models is not precluded, but is not required.
  • Support of Bluetooth module and AirPort (WiFi) module is not required.
  • Only one CPU will be supported.
  • Bounty donations are not related to MorphOS license. Any contributor wanting to buy a MorphOS license for PowerMac G5, will pay the regular price.
  • Bounty timeframe: 3 months after the programmer receives the machine.

You can donate on the official project site with Paypal. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Market survey: USB-Adapter for Commodore/Atari joysticks
Retronic Design is now offering a joystick adapter that lets you connect classic Commodore and Atari joysticks to modern computers. Retronic is located in Canada, the product is distributed through ebay.

Similar products are available from various other vendors: Amigakit (not in stock yet), Retrozone (USA) or keio.dk are offering prebuilt solutions. In Germany, retro-donald.de is offering an adapter kit, and last but not least Individual Computer's Keyrah can be used to connect joysticks to your computer - this one just simulates keystrokes though.

For hardware tinkerers who want to build their own adapter from scratch, there's a wide variety of tutorials available:

Rupert Hausberger (ANF)

Amiga-Emulator: Janus 0.6
Janus is an Amiga emulator written in Javascript and by Rupert Hausberger which works with modern web browsers - although being completely supported only by Chrome currently (amiga-news.de reported).

In the latest version 0.6 AmigaOS 1.x as well as now version 2.04 and AROS are supported. Additionally games like Alien Breed Tower Assault, Project-X Special Edition, Shadow of the Beast 2 or Wings now work.

Changes in version 0.6 (25.10.2012):
  • ROM
    • Added support for extended-roms.
    • AROS kickstart replacement is now the default-rom, and will be downloaded and used on the fly.
  • RAM
    • Changed internal memory alignment from 8 to 16 bit.
    • Added fast-ram support, through a emulated Commodore A2058 in Zorro2-mode.
    • Removed the D8DC-memory-option from the GUI. This memory space is now always allocated.
    • Sorted access for memory-routines by priority.
  • CPU
    • Fixed sign-extension for memory to address-register transfers in MOVEM.
    • Fixed sign-extension for absolute-word addresses in exEA.
    • Fixed wrong address when writing a byte to the stack in ldEA.
    • Fixed 32bit calculations for address-regsiters in ADDQ/SUBQ.
    • Fixed remainder calculation in DIVU.
    • Optimized integer-arithmetic functions. Size depending calcalations are now used.
    • Improved exception 2/3 handling.
    • More small cleanups not listed here.
  • Disk
    • Ported latest disk-code from WinUAE. Disk-based problems should be gone now, e.g. floopy shown as BAD or read errors.
    • Diskchange does now work.
    • Drives can be disabled now.
    • DD/HD types are now supported.
  • Display
    • Added missing support for HAM6.
    • Fixed horizontal and vertical screen-centering.
    • Fixed screen-draging, almost, read the "Known bugs" section.
    • Added better screen-scrolling.
  • Input
    • Fixed key-mapping to the amiga key-layout, at least in Chrome. Firefox does not like "öäü", it seems.
    • Added support for individual configurations of joystick-movement and fire-buttons.
    • Fixed bug, that made the fire 1 button on joystick 0 not working.
    • Fixed bug in the mouse-movement function, that calculates the wrong coordinates in some cases.
  • GUI
    • Added eject-button in the disk-change requester.
    • Removed the CPU and OCS/ECS options. They are useless so far.
    • The "Pause" and "Resume" buttons are once now.
    • Made some options only apera when selected.
    • Did some cosmetics.
  • Misc
    • Added support for Zorro2-expansion cards.
    • Added a more precise event-handling. This makes the audio-output a little smoother.
    • Changed the ratio of CPU-/Chipset-time from 1:8 to 1:4
    • Fixed a bug in the RTC. "Year" is now calculated correctly.
    • Fixed incorrect response of serial.device. Now crashed programms does reset (and show the guru), instead of idle.
    • Any output on the serial.device is now redirected to the debug-log. (dev only)
    • Kickstart/Workbench 2.04 and AROS does now work.
    • Overall about 10-30% more speed, as long as the blitter is not used too much.

AROS: 68k-Distribution AROS Vision 1.5.4
Olaf Schönweiß has updated his AROS/68k-distribution. It is a mix of AROS and AmigaOS software (English tutorial). The author thanks all users for their active interest - the previous version 1.5.3 was downloaded 1200 times.

The update includes a completely integrated WHDLoad with a preinstalled "AROS ROM Replacements". That means several classic games now should run at once. A list of the compatible games have been already made. With the permission of the right-holder the point'n click-adventure "Lure of the Temptress" now is part of the distribution.

The following programms have been added in AROS Vision 1.5.4:
  • Amistart (Amikit-version, thanks to Jan, Ken and Darius)
  • AGA (scene) demos for demonstration
  • free printer driver
  • Annotate
  • Inga
  • AmiArcadia
  • ScummVM AGA
  • AmiMastergear
  • minor changes like new includes for Amiblitz
  • Sqrz (HD-version)
  • Brutal Homicide (with permission)

USB-board: Design of "Thylacine" released, possibly reissue as construction kit
Thylacine USB is a low-cost USB-controller which was introduced 2002 and on a "full length" Zorro 2 plugin-card hosts an USB 1.1-port. The developers have released all information which are necessary for the production of a reissue by third persons.

For the Thylacine USB there is a Poseidon-driver which works together with version 4.4 of USB-Stacks which is available for free. A possible reisue of the hardware as a construction kit is currently discussed (German) on a1k.org.

Already 10 years ago there were reports which gave the impression that the Thylacine only works with selected USB-hardware without any problems. On a1k.org (all in German) Poseidon author Chris "Platon42" Hodges, Michael Boehmer from E3B and Jens Schönfeld (Individual Computers) warn of the quality of the used USB-chip (SL811) as well as of the Poseidon driver.

It must be said that all three critics might not be completely objective: Jens Schönfeld obviously has plans for an USB-hardware and Boehmer/Hodges are going to publish a reissue of the Subway: According to them a third person apparently has licenced the design of the clockport-extension of E3B and the Poseidon-drivers of Hodges and thus avoided the problems.

Actually the Subway now is available in the Vesalia-shop again but currently with indefinite date of delivery. (cg) (Translation: dr)
