AmigaOS 4: RunInUAE r2
Christopher Handley's RunInUAE enables to use the Amiga emulator E-UAE under AmigaOS 4. E-UAE has to be installed before. With the release 2 loading of games on several disks should now work.

Changes in release 2 of RunInUAE:
  • Hopefully fixed HD installed games not starting for some people (please reinstall Workbench 3.1)
  • Added automatic loading of multi-disk games
  • Per-drawer & per-game config files now work with ADFs (bug fix)
  • Now opens an App Window for you to drop games on; easier than dropping them on its AmiDock icon
  • A new icon, thanks to David Braconnier
  • Improved installer & manual, thanks to user feedback

PR-campaign: Is Hyperion announcing new hardware? (2nd Update)
At the screenshots of the Firefox-port Timberwolf published two dys ago the website a-eon.com could be seen. Smart users figured out that this website belongs to Ben Hermans (Hyperion Entertainment) and obviously has hidden some hints to Hyperion's next project.

By clicking the graphics on each site you can release another text or get the next hint (1.html, 2.html, 3.html, 4.html). Each day a-eon.com will be completed with another hint. Again and again you can read the terms "OMEN" or ("OM"), "ENIGMA" and "AEON" with which users tried to make anagrams.

The hint added today plays with these terms and then shows the text "Have you figured it out yet?". The I-dot at "it" is something more dark - if you move the mouse cursor above it you get the reaction: "(Oh no! Don't look at that!".

If you ignore this warning and have a look at the I-dot you will see that it is a highly scaled down photo. A photo which apparently shows a part of a motherboard. In a thread at amigaworld.net Hans-Jörg "Rogue" Frieden explained that it is more than "just" new hardware. Further information will be available tomorrow.

According to the Belgian Staatsblad (PDF-document) the company A-EON was founded in April 2009 by Ben Hermans and the both British men Robert Trevor Dickinson and Anthony Moorley.

Update: (03.01.10, 12:14, snx)
Meanwhile almost the complete mainboard is visible, also one further picture was found on the server which seems to show part of a case.

2nd Update: (03.01.10, 13:52, snx)
Hans-Jörg Frieden adds that the slots on the mainboard are two PCIe x16, three PCIe x1, two PCI 33 MHz and finally one "Xorro" slot, with the latter being in line with the third PCIe 1x slot. All 16 lanes of the PCIe x16 slot can be used only if just one slot is occupied, though, otherwise two times eight lanes are used.

The javascript file (4.js) used for today's page confirms that the CPU is a PowerPC - and according to another picture already found on the server it seems to provide more than one core. At the second still covered position on the mainboard, there seems to be a chip called "Xena" which might serve as a custom chip. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Ventzislav Tzvetkov (ANF)

AmigaOS 4: 8-Bit-Emulator Atari++ 1.58
The emulator Atari++ emulates Atari's 8-Bit-home computer as well as the game console Atari 5200. The AmigaOS-4-port was made by Ventzislav 'drHirudo' Tzvetkov, supports AmigaInput and can be controled with joysticks or analog controllers.

New features of version 1.58 include:
  • Fixed a couple of issues in the GUI, specifically when entering data into string gadgets
  • Fixed again a couple of exception handling issues in the menu
  • Made the keypad stick configurable, the keys for joystick emulation are now part of the configuration
  • Added a dummy front-end, "NONE", that does not render anything to the screen
  • This release supports .CAS images; however, they are not part of a C: (tape) emulation, but emulated as disks. Depending on the contents of the tape archive, the disk is either considered a boot disk, a binary or a basic file
  • This release supports better disk support for BASIC and MAC/65 files. If you insert such a file into the emulated disk drive, the emulator will build a DOS 2.0S compatible disk structure around it and you can load the image from the emulated disk as D:PROGRAM.BAS or D:PROGRAM.ASM. Note that such disks are *not* bootable, you first need to boot, and then turn on the emulated disk drive
  • Fixed emulation of read-modify-write instructions. The 6502 consistently writes the old value before replacing it by a second write with the updated value
  • The default alsa output device has been changed from hw:0.0 to default, making it more compatible to hardware setups
  • The disassembly of the BVC instruction was invalid, fixed
  • Added the space bar as possible source for joystick events
  • Fixed some issues with preferences reading
  • Added additional tests for ROM image verification
  • Fixed a NULL pointer reference in the cartridge module

  • Minor memory leak fix
  • Launch from icons. PNG/NewIcon/Old-style icons included
  • Removal of MD5SUM. Using function in rxlibnet
  • Only says "is now known as" if they were already online
  • "User is typing.." message sent to recipients. This is only now possible due to the new switchboard code in 1.1
  • Changed text font (that will be shown on recipients side) from MS Sans Serif to Segoe UI
  • Recognises when WLM aborts a file being sent to you
  • Thumbnail data sent from Windows Live Messenger when an image file is offered, is saved to RAM:Preview.png
  • Obtain ticket quicker on OS4
  • If someone offers you a file without saying anything first, a window will now open. Increases compatibility with some clients that use a new switchboard session for file transfers
  • Small change to try to stop clients from requesting your avatar too often
  • A few minor optimizations
  • Fixed long standing bug when removing a group in IRCd mode. Anyone who was online in the group/channel that was removed, the WHOIS reponse would still show them being in that now non-existant channel
  • Crude Direct connection support for receiving when listening. Should work in the majority of cases when receiving from WLM

Users of AmigaOS 4 should add the libraries rxsocket.library and rxlibnet.library to the Blacklist of the JIT-emulator to avoid problems with AmiMSN. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Software-News until 21.12.2009

Text viewer: EvenMore 0.69

EvenMore is a textviewer written in AmigaE and by Chris Perver. Changes since the last version:
  • Modified exec list sorting to receive a list length variable, so it doesn't need to be counted first. Also modified Dir2Text plugin to accept this
  • Was freeing information bar pattern data by mistake when launching an external program
  • Pär Boberg has updated his Swedish catalog file following the changes made to the preferences
  • Added two new escape code sequences. ESC[52m will set the displayed font in EvenMore to the user selected font, while ESC[53m will set the displayed font to the default system font. This will allow plugins such as the Generic2Text plugin to switch to a uniform system font when viewing hexadecimal files.
  • Updated Generic2Text plugin to use the system font when viewing hexadecimal files

MorphOS: Drawerball 0.8q

Tom 'Amigaharry' Duin has published Drawerball 0.8q which is a very early version of a simple file manager.

AmigaOS 4: Modula 2-development environment AgletM2PPC

AgletM2PPC is a complete Modula 2-development environment inclusive compiler. Only a text editor is required (GoldEd, CygnusEd and TurboText are supported). Changes since the last release:

Compiler:
  • The compiler itself is now PPC native, and is significantly faster!
  • The size limit on procedures is now probably large enough for any sane program
  • A bug which caused extremely excessive stack use was fixed. Now 40 or 50K should be enough for almost any compile
  • Some code generation errors were fixed
  • Fixed problem with Opaque pointers resolved within the IMPLEMENTATION module by imported pointer types
  • Added compiler warning: OpenArrayCopyWarn
  • SDK 53.8+ now using the GNU assembler v2.18 vs. 2.14 in earlier SDKs. This required that some instructions be output slightly differently
  • Certain "recording" versions of FP instructions are no longer generated, since Sam 440ep/flex does not support them

(Pre)Linker
  • Mod2Lnk recognizes a "-stack" switch and inserts the "$STACK:xxxx" cookie into executables. The .asm files no longer need be kept around. All dependency information is in the object file now. Asm files are written to T:
  • Added the "-g" debug switch, which causes both exported and non-exported symbols to be put into the Elf symbol table so that SymbolsRTS can find them as well

M2IDE
  • Option "Make Icons?" added for the project file save
  • Fixed problem of GR on exit if M2IDE changed its current directory
  • Multiselect now supported for the "Misc Files" file requester

Amiga Modules
  • Added Definition files for about 25 more Amiga Libraries, and all supplied Amiga definition files (over 150 of them) were brought up to the v53.13 SDK
  • The TextEditor gadget is now working much better, as the Definition file now adjusts to a glitch in the SDK's .h file

Aglet Modules
  • System module SymbolsRTS was introduced for better debugging of exception locations
  • CLI program arguments and Workbench ToolTypes are transparently (almost) unified when the ArgsSupport module is used to read startup arguments
  • Many improvements in the (experimental) SimpleXXX modules (SimpleGUI, SimpleScreens, SimpleMenus, SimpleGraphics, etc)
  • new modules: BigInt, for 155 bit integers; IconSupport, for writing out icons

Filesharing: Testing Amigift 2.0 for free

Amigift is a P2P file sharing system based on the giFT-demon (Gnutella, FastTrack, OpenFT) ported from the Unix-system and which has a MUI-based graphical user-interface called "GiftMUI" (screenshot). The author now offers a key with which you can test all the features of the shareware program for a limited time for 30 minutes per session.

Lawsuit: settlement agreement between Amiga and Hyperion published
In October, Hyperion had announced that it had reached an agreement with Amiga Inc. regarding the rights to AmigaOS 4. A few days ago, the actual settlement agreement between both parties has been published in the court archives as part of the judge's recent order to accept the agreement and close the case.

The most important points of the agreement are:
  1. Hyperion is the sole owner of the operating system they are distributing, excluding the parts derived from AmigaOS 3.1 - for which Hyperion will get a new licence from Amiga Inc. (see below)
  2. While Amiga Inc. is described as the "sole owner of the software 'AmigaOS 3.1'", they exclusively license most rights associated with the product to Hyperion, including the right to sell AmigaOS licenses to other parties.
  3. Amiga Inc. may only distribute AmigaOS 3.1 bundled with "gaming content" - and only as long as it is not modified and the user interface of AmigaOS is never shown to the user. An example mentioned in the contract is a retro games console, but the games/WinUAE bundles distributed through Amiga's shop would also fit this description.
  4. Hyperion now has an exclusive license to the "Amiga OS" and "AmigaOne" trademarks. Both parties may use the "Boingball" on their products.
  5. Existing licensees (e.g. Cloanto) are not concerned with this agreement.
The agreement, which is signed by Bill McEwen for Amiga und Evert Carton for Hyperion, does not describe what kind of compensation - if any - Amiga Inc. recieves in return. (cg) (Translation: dr)
