AROS for AmigaOS: AFA OS 3.94.1
Bernd Roesch's project "AROS for AmigaOS" is an extension of AmigaOS 3.9 that uses libraries that were ported back from AROS. New in version 3.94.1:
- In AFA prefs ENVARC: gets an entry in the directory field of the file requester when doing "Save Prefs". This should solve the problem that the correct directory is shown but the file is saved in the current directory.
- The text function uses now an own stack and not the task stack. As Truetype fonts with antialiasing need a bigger stack and the input.device stack is used for the drawing of BOOPSI classes (or by patches such as Birdie or VisualPrefs) there's no risk anymore that the input.device stack can overflow.

AmigaOS 4: HivelyTracker
HivelyTracker is a tracker based on the AHX-format (screenshot). AHX was developed in the 90es to write music tracks similar to the typical chip-sound of the SID (sound-Chip of the C64).
HivelyTracker can import and export modules and instruments in AHX-format but will save them in a seperate format which offers additional possibilities. Compared to AHX HivelyTracker offers the following advantages:
- Multichannel (4 to 16 channels)
- Per-channel stereo panning
- Two commands per note instead of one
- Ring modulation
- A more feature rich editor

AmigaOne: Revised Linux 2.6.8-Kernel
Under the title link Gerhard Pircher has released a reworked linux kernel of version 2.6.8 for the AmigaOne. A patch for the source code package of this kernel version from the distribution Debian Sarge is available as well.
A revised kernel of version 2.6.16.x should be completed within the next two weeks and contain drivers for EHCI and the pc speaker.
Changes:
- Highmem support is working: You can remove the memory limit in U-boot now
- EHCI support removed: The EHCI driver doesn't work on the AmigaOne due to the non coherent cache DMA workaround and I was to lazy to backport a workaround which was contributed by Marcus Comstedt. Many thanks to him for this patch
- DRI graphics drivers removed: These drivers were removed, thus you can enable the glx extension of the X server again
- ISA bridge tweaks: Recently I experienced problems with USB on my A1, too. Therefore I tried to weak the settings of the VIA southbridge (to match the settings done by OS4). This seems to help a little bit, but after some time the system locks up again. I'm still not sure what the real problem is, but I guess it's either the unfixed CPU bug or an interrupt problem.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a response from the (responsible) OS4 developer(s), so I can't really do anything about this. (I remember sg2 writing about a software problem with the i8259 PIC. I would be grateful, if he could enlighten me)

Amiga Club Hamburg opens up to alternative systems
In its last general meeting, the Amiga Club Hamburg has decided that the ACH is opening up to other alternative computer systems. Systems like Mac OS X or Linux, for example, as well as generally all other systems apart from the mainstream Microsoft Windows, fall among these.
The background of this decision is the ever-stagnating number of Amiga users in the Hamburg area as well as the ever-waning number of members who show up at the regular meeting on Monday.
At the Monday meetings, the ACH offers its members the chance to set up a computer, surf on the Internet with high-speed DSL, and to talk shop with like-minded people in a rented room. (nba) (Translation: cad)

New windows drivers for Catweasel
press release After the last update about three months ago, we mainly received bug reports that referred to writing Amiga disks. The errors could not be reproduced on our test systems immediately, therefore the solution took longer than we wanted our customers to wait. Many thanks must go to customers who patiently reported bugs and helped us test the new drivers. The new beta version (now a release candidate) can be downloaded for free from our support page.
The cause for the error that has been finally resolved was the floppy drives that are currently available on the PC market, where DD-disks practically do not exist any more. These drives have been extremely optimised for low production cost. We know about one drive that does not work with DD-disks (720K, 880K) any more, it's the Samsung SFD-321B.
The re-configurable architecture of the Catweasel MK4 allows hardware updates through the driver. We found a possibility to write DD-disks with such disk drives. However, they cannot be verified or read with that kind of drives, but they can be read with most DD drives in classic Amiga computers. This lets you use the drives temporarily until you can install a recommended true dual-mode drive, for example by Teac. One thing that you should avoid is writing HD disks with DD density.
Some customers wanted to connect 5,25-inch drives with 360K capacity to the Catweasel. The imagetool now allows the necessary configuration for that. Last not least, a problem with the middle and right mouse buttons of an Amiga mouse has been resolved.

Self-made project: Photos of an A500 extended to an A2000
Already two years ago Daniele Gratteri extended his Amiga 500 with a 68040 turbo card which was originally meant for an Amiga 2000 as well as with Zorro II-slots.
According to him this project was successful. You can find photos as well as English explanations on the homepage of Daniele Gratteri. As soon as he has more time he wants to use a video-slot, too.

Development environment: SimpleCat plugin for Cubic IDE
SimpleCat is a program for maintaining catalogs (tanslations). It offers more features than the cat program of the AmigaOS and MorphOS SDK: Powerful import and export functions, validity checks and a graphical user interface make the life of developers easier and the program first choice for translators.
The add-on for Cubic (Screenshot) integrates SimpleCat into the interface of the development environment, with syntax highlighting for translations and clickable log files. SimpleCat was developed by Guido Mersman and the latest version is included with kind permission of the author.

Retro Gaming: WHDLoad 16.7
With WHDLoad you can install games and scene demos on a hard drive which were originally meant only for use with disks. In addition, numerous incompabilities with newer Amiga models are fixed. Changes since the last version:
- fix: the Snoop check for custom.bplpt's against BaseMem bounds was
broken on word writes on the 68030 (DJMike)
- fix: resload_LoadFile and resload_LoadFileDecrunch has silently not
loaded data without PreLoad, bug introduced in v16.6 (Bored
Seal/Psygore)
- new: option NoResInt/S add, which disables any interrupts during
execution of resload functions
- chg: if the Slave requires AGA and that is not yet enabled in

obsoletes the execution of SetPatch prior to WHDLoad

Magazine: Amiga Future celebrates 8th anniversary
Press release: This month Amiga Future celebrates its 8th anniversary. Thats a good reason for use to celebrate. Eight years ago most of the users thought we would hold on only for few months.
In November/December 1998 the first issue of the Amiga Future was printed.
Because of delivery reasons Amiga Future first was published as special issue so the first issue was not named 1 but 11.
From the beginning the Amiga Future was published each second month with Cover-CD.
With issue 27 the editorial stuff became self-employed. All articles were written by themselves. Besides this the delivery of the magazine was made by them, too.
Meanwhile issue 63 was published and we are already working on the next issue of the Amiga Future.
During the next weeks we will start some little but nice actions on the Amiga Future homepage and there will be some bigger updates, too.
We start with a special offer for all fans of the Amiga Future-reader-CD. Directly on the start page of our shop you can find this limited offer.
Several older single issues you can order in our onlineshop.
We would like to thank all editors, firms and users who helped us creating the Amiga Future and of course to thank all readers of the Amiga Future.

Dragon 1200: Further Informations published
The organizers of the exhibition AmiZaduszki 2006 (amiga-news.de reported) have prepared informations, confirmed by Elbox, about the Coldfire board Dragon 1200 at the pages of the Polish Amiga-portal PPA. An English translation of the Polish announcement was provided by'yak'.
The first shipment of the Dragon 1200 is planned for the end of December this year. The speed of 68k software running at the Coldfire-Board could be compared with the speed of a 68040 to 68060 cpu.
Further details:
- AmigaOS 3.9 would run at the Dragon 1200
- The Dragon board could run as a stand alone unit, but not under AmigaOS 3.9, as this takes access to the Amiga hardware
- An AROS port is under work
- Software to convert 68k-assembler-source code for the Coldfire cpu should exist as well as a GCC-compiler for the Coldfire
- The price without vat is calculated with 349 Euro, a discount for the return of a Mediator-busboard is planned
- The former delays were caused by problems with the cpu's provided by Freescale, furthermore 68k emulation libraries provided by Freescale didn't work
- Besides the Amiga market the Dragon-board (in a stand alone mode) addresses under Linux the industry; even Freescale is interested in this
- A PowerPC option realized as a pci card for den Dragon could be possible
- The Dragon's cpu module doesn't strictly depend on a Coldfire cpu, but a different cpu could be used in future

Feelin 11.0
Olivier Laviales' open source project Feelin, an object oriented system for AmigaOS, is now available in version 11.0
(screen shots).
Changes:
"Although this new release is a major update, it's still very far from my goals. A huge set of features was added, mainly related to styles, but unfortunately I had to disable the preference system and some classes in order to push a release (9 monthes since last release).
Please note that the website address is no longer http://www.gofromiel.com/feelin but http://feelin.gofromiel.com. Please update your bookmark.
SYSTEM
This version introduce Atoms, which associate a unique numeric representation to a string, making string comparison child play. I was previously using a Hash tables for this purpose, this method is far more better.
CSS
The preferences were already stored in CSS files since last release, but it was a "stupid" implementation. This updated one is still very limited, since it doesn't support selectors, but it finaly introduces pseudo classes and *real* inheritence.
Previsouly inheritence was granted because classes attributes where overriting one another, which is stupid and *very* limited. Now a 'style-cache' is created based on an object's true class and its inheritence. The 'style-cache' has the same properties as the previous 'associated data' technique: the style of an object 'type' if decoded only once and shared *a lot*. For example, if you have 1000 buttons in a window, their style is decoded once then cached and shared with the 999 others.
More over, there is now a *clear* distinction between attributes and style properties. For example, there is no longer any FA_Area_Background" attribute, but a "background" property.
Most attributes have been replaced with their CSS conterparts: "background", "border", "padding", "min-width", "max-height"... This version also introduce the "margin" property, which can now be used to add invisible space around objects.
Obviously as in HTML you can use multiple classes as style class: "button confirm warn".
ELEMENT / AREA / WIDGET
Because of the new 'styles' support, the Area class has to be rewritten. It is now a subclass of the Element class. Its sole purpose is to handle low level graphics such as backgrounds, palettes, fonds... All 'event' implementation has been moved into the new Widget class.
COLORS
CSS definitions where already used to define colors, but it was limited to hex values (#FF00FF), HTML keywords (aqua, black...) and Feelin keywords (shine, fill). With this update colors definitions are complete since the functionnal rgb() is now available!
IMAGES
Image specifications where defined using XML format, which was nice at the time, but I realize it was stupid and to much of a job ! Now images are simply defined as CSS does, with some extentions.
Obviously you can create solid background using the "red" keyword, but you can create a two color gradient using "red blue", a three color gradient using "red green blue", and an 'aqua style' gradient using four colors. Additionally you can define the angle of the gradient: "red blue 45°".
Brushes are currently disabled, but you can use pictures instead, and it's as simple as this: "url(logo.png") ! CSS 'positionning' is completely handled as well as 'repeat'. I've exented specification which the 'multiple' keyword, which can be used to split an image in four states: normal, touch, focus and ghost. Finaly, you can also 'tint' a transparent image by simple adding a color specification if the declaration: "url(logo.png) red"." (snx) (Translation: ub)

Aminet: Download statistics available
Press release: Aminet now features download statistics: download charts for both the current month aswell as an all time top 50 are now available at our stats page - the current leader may actually come as a surprise to most of you.
Additionally, each package overview page now lists the number of downloads for the actual package (Example). All HTTP-Downloads from all of the Aminet mirrors are considered when creating the statistics.
A note to uploaders: If you replace an existing package with a new upload with the exact same name, the download statistics for your package will not be resetted - e.g. if you upload disk/misc/foo.lha to replace an
existing, older version of disk/misc/foo.lha, the download counter will be preserved.
In all other cases - like uploading foo-1.1.lha replacing foo-1.0.lha - the download counter will be set to zero again. Note that using version
numbers or similar indicators in filenames is not recommended anyway.
In addition to the current month's top uploaders, the stats page also features an all time uploader chart now.
While we're at it, we would like to welcome ftp.uni-bremen.de to our pool of mirrors. This Aminet veteran is finally back online and now sports a full mirror, which means that Aminet now consists of eight active servers - with more coming up soon.
