MySQL Development Team supports Pegasos Server
30th November 2004
Uppsala, Sweden
Contact: bbrv@genesi.lu

With the support of the Genesi/Freescale PegasosPPC Pilot Project, the MySQL core development team has received a full complement of PowerPC-enabled Open Desktop Workstations. "We are excited about this new alternative platform. Sony Europe's success with MySQL on Pegasos has opened our eyes to its potential. We are pleased to be able to offer our internal resources support for this platform," said Mika Asikainen, MySQL's Partner Manager.

When it delivered the machines, Genesi provided an orientation seminar - including a focus on the use of AltiVec. MySQL AB intends to provide benchmark results that will help demonstrate Pegasos' superior watt/cycle efficiency and how MySQL database deployments on the platform can reduce organizations' total cost of ownership.

Genesi is a Certified MySQL Partner and a Platinum Sponsor of the MySQL Users Conference 2005. (cg) (Translation: cg)

New products from individual Computers
The first Sunday in advent is already over, the downtown areas have been equipped with Christmas decoration, and the production for this year's Christmas business is running at full speed at individual Computers:

We're especially happy to announce that despite the two competing products in the market, the flash-card "Kickflash OS4" has been selling to well, that a second production run was necessary. The new cards have already been shipped to our retail partners last week, so there should not be any delays by now. Kickflash OS4 is shipped with 1MB flashrom space.

The betatest-phase of the C-One also made a successful start. Since the beginning of this month, everyone can buy the world's first computer that is purely based on programmable logic. This means that the computer can even start without a processor chip! The board itself will not experience changes any more - the hardware is final. During the beta-phase, there will be core-updates that can be downloaded from the C-One website, and transferred to the C-One using off-the-shelve mass storage media like CF cards or CDs. The board is shipped with a CPU/RAM card with a 65816 processor and 128K superfast S-RAM. For a limited period of time, the board price includes a PS2 memory module.

We also had to make a new production run for our most successful product for the C64 so far: During this summer, the last unit of the Retro Replay was sold. As a distinctive mark for the third production run, we have changed the colour again: The Retro Replays from 2001 have been shipped in black. The second production run from the year 2003 was built on blue circuit boards. Starting now, the Retro Replay is available in shiny red!

The complete sellout of the second production run also means that there will be another party sponsored by individual Computers, organized together with the scene-group CyberpunX. Just like during the Pentecost weekend of this year, the party will take place in an old air-raid bunker from worldwar II in Bochum, Germany. The date has already been set to June 10th to June 12th, 2005, and not only Retro Replay owners are invited! More information can be found on the party website.

Last but not least we want to inform you that the release of the Catweasel MK4 is delayed a bit. Parts of the production had to be moved to the Far East in order to keep the announced price. For the first time, we will only use lead-free materials with the exception of only two components. With this new approach, we are preparing for the new laws that will become effective in 2006. The new release date of the Catweasel MK4 has been set to the third week of December, so it should arrive at our retail partners just in time for Christmas. A pre-production run of Catweasel MK4 controllers has already been finished late October of this year, and many of those controllers have been shipped to developers for free.

Patch for vbcc 0.8g

Version 0.8g of the ISO-C-compiler "vbcc" which was published a little while ago contained a faulty configuration file which did not activate the Amigahunk format for vlink. This caused problems when using vbcc_targets_m68k-amigaos under a different host than AmigaOS/68k.

NewGUI: Test Version 1.4.1 with Transparent Windows
A test version of NewGUI 1.4.1 for AmigaOS 3.x and CyberGraphX 3+ with a few bugfixes and new functions like transparent windows is available for download under the title link. Here are screenshots. NewGUI also runs under the 68k emulation of MorphOS.

With regard to the transparency, it's not a true transparency - a new layers.library would be necessary for that. The background is not updated. Nevertheless the transparency effect requires a lot of processor performance, but according to the author's message the time for the calculation of the background has been reduced to acceptable levels on a 68040.

The Pyramids demo requires at least a 16 bit display. The author welcomes comments and suggestions for improvement. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Genesi: A statement concerning MorphOS
The current MorphOS release is owned by the shareholders of Genesi and is being distributed today in a form fully licensed and paid for. Genesi will resume support of external MorphOS 1.5 development when there is a clear plan and a date set for the release.

The posts against Genesi made on MorphOS.net are unfortunate. These actions of a single person have damaged our discussions with major strategic partners and have cast doubt on Genesi and MorphOS. There has never been any disagreement about paying for development, in fact more than $500,000 have been paid to MorphOS developers and for MorphOS licenses. There has been disagreement however, how much and for what to pay for.

MorphOS does not currently drive significant sales of the platform. It is our hope that one day it will, but this will not be achieved without the majority of the Company's resources being focused on activities that generate revenue and profit.

Genesi has become a partner/sponsor of the Debian, Gentoo and Crux Linux developer communities. Genesi is also enrolled in the official board support/partner programs of Yellow Dog Linux, Montavista and QNX Software Systems. It is in these areas that Genesi is now focused.

AmigaOne-XE: Hardware fix for the DMA/Ethernet problem?

According to Solie, complete information on the procedure will be available to all AmigaOne dealers soon. Eyetech did not confirm any of the above statements yet. (cg) (Translation: cg)

IOSPIRIT: Onlineshop only available until 24th November 2004
Major internal reorganization efforts will make it necessary to deactivate the order function of the online shop on the 24th of November 2004. The time needed for these efforts is estimated with two weeks, but can be longer due to dependencies on external factors. The deactivation of the onlineshop thus happens for indefinite time. Customers who want to order software still this year thus should make their orders until the 24th of November 2004. In this context we also want to remind our customers of the still running fall promotion with price reductions of up to 75 %.

Apart from the ability to place new orders, all functions of the website will stay available as usual. (cg) (Translation: cg)

AmithlonUpdate project cancelled
Guido Mersmann told us that AmithlonUpdate which is available in Aminet will be not further developed but deleted from it. He further wrote:

"Because Bernd Meyer just has told me in the public Yahoo mailing list AmithlonOpen that I am not allowed to use the archives which he made available I cannot continue developing it. Unfortunately the users will lose a project because of a personal conflict of two people.

The still existing archives will be deleted from Aminet as soon as possible. Because as I know the Aminet is still offline the AmithlonUpdate V1.30 and the corresponding source code archive which were going to be uploaded will be deleted, too." (snx) (Translation: dr)

Test: Compatibility of a Pocket Video-Recorder with MorphOS
After Carsten Siegner acquired a pocket video-recorder, he tackled the question of whether the particular model, an Archos AV400, could be utilized without problems on MorphOS, given its use of a USB connection. He writes:

"Everyone who would like to have a real hardware encoder for the Pegasos should have a look at the AV400 from Archos. This is a pocket video-recorder that encodes and decodes videos in MPEG4-SP format in realtime. Outside of that it outputs the sound formats of MP3, WMA and WAV, and captures WAV clips.

Because it makes use of a USB port, I can copy a clip of video over to my Pegasos hard-drive, or even view it with MorphOS MPlayer directly off the camera's internal 20 meg hard-drive.

A DVD image in DIVX-4 format may be generated with an appropriate editing program direct on the camera's hard-drive, so that I may then view this video data by making use of the video connections on any standard TV. Doing it this way maintains the output quality at the level of a DVD. By contrast, if I make the video with the device itself, the quality is only about SVCD level." (snx) (Translation: dm)

Genesi set up new official website for MorphOS
Genesi reports at the MorphZone they put their official website for MorphOS to a new address (title link) to deal with the latest issues regarding the development of MorphOS (amiga-news.de reported): The new official website for MorphOS is now to reach at www.morphosppc.com.

Currently the content is identical to the former site which was available at the old address, but it should be redesigned soon.

This new website by Genesi is set up in accordance with Ralph Schmidt said Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck. He is still owner of the major part of MorphOS and shareholder of Genesi/bplan. A fruitful discussion with David Gerber and Stefan Stuntz regarding the future is welcome, but nonetheless development will continue.

The upset developers reacted on the launch of the new site immediately and put at MorphOS.net the following statement: "2004-11-17: Genesi is setting up a fake website claiming they own MorphOS. By doing so, they infringes on our copyright. Any version of MorphOS distributed with a new Pegasos is illegal since our contracts have not been honoured. Licenses are withdrawn." Text viewer: EvenMore update
New plugin supporting PowerPacker compressed files created for EvenMore text viewer. At the minute this will only uncompress PP20 files, with no encryption (PX20) and no passwords, but support for these will follow soon.

You will need to download the new EvenMore executable as this plugin uses a new plugin identifier "PACK". Any plugins using this ID will be run before the standard set of file conversion plugins, allowing any uncompression/unarchiving to be done. I plan to take the XPK support out of the main EvenMore executable and put it into a similar plugin.

I also may plan to create/adapt a plugin system for saving files, either with compression (PowerPacker, XPK etc), or maybe even saving as special formats (such as RTF?). (snx)

Genesi: Pilot Program Broadened
As Genesi made known via a press release (title link), the second phase of the Genesi/Freescale Pegasos pilot project has been successfully concluded, and Pegasos-based ODWs (Open Desktop Workstations) were delivered to T-Mobile (Czech), MySQL and the NSCEE.

The ODWs are being tested in several server and cluster configurations using different operating systems and applications. To this end the Avalanche Desktop Reference Program at Jostens and Select Comfort and then Cargill, ePredix and Imation is expanded. The Avalanche members use a Debian GNU/Linux solution on Pegasos for the deployment as "thin clients" or fileservers as well as for general use.

Genesi made known further that the delivery of more than 100 Open Desktop Workstations to selected Debian, Gentoo, Crux, Yellow Dog Linux and MorphOS developers has concluded. Demo Scene teams also received consideration. (snx) (Translation: dm)

Harman buys QNX
The Hifi specialist Harman has bought the software developer QNX which is specialised in creating realtime operating systems. Some time ago QNX was taken into consideration of being the successor of AmigaOS and was also distributed with the AmigaOSXL packet from Haage&Partner.

Harman espeacially is interested in the realtime operating system QNX Neutrino. This should become the de-facto-standard in the car industry.

The price for it is to be 138 million US-Dollar. (nba) (Translation: dr)

Filesharing: Update v1.1.2 for Amigift
Yesterday Diego Casorran published an update for Amigift V1.1.1. This fixes especially two bugs of version 1.1.1.

The first one touches the bug when downloading from the OpenFT network and secondly Amigift will not freeze any longer if the source list of the downloads is too big. Additionally the NList parser was optmized and runs now something faster.
