Amiga Arena: Interview with Sascha Brandt ("The last Seal")
Olaf Köbnik writes:
Amiga Arena - Interview Action
1999 a demo version of the adventures "The last Seal" was published, developed by the Swiss team "Ancor".

Since a lot of things were announced, yet never realized we're now even more pleased to hear that "The last Seal" has been further developed throughout 2001.

Half of the game has supposedly been rewritten in "C" and "The last Seal" seems to promise a downright crazy adventure. (Let's hope that it will be finished).

The Amiga Arena held a short interview with the developer Sascha Brandt.

Further information is available under Ancor. (sd) (Translation: sr)

Virus Help Denmark: xvs.library V33.37
On 9. December 2001 Georg Hoermann and Jan Erik Olausen published the version 33.37 of the virus scanner library "xvs".

Compared to the previous version the following changes have been made:
  • Once more added some new security features to the library. It will now try to self-defend after alien attacks, only if these efforts fail, the library gets disabled.
  • Added recognition for 2 demo files that I call 'Anti-UAE Trojan'. Their code checks for UAE systems and in case it finds one will delete important files. Thanks to Jan Andersen for sending the demos to me.
  • Added recognition for a MS-DOS strain of 'Bastard Installer'. Thanks to Jan Andersen for the file.
  • Added recognition and repair code for 'Bobek 3' linkvirus. Thanks to Zeeball for sending me an infected file, even though it was accidentally :-)
This virus scanner library can be used together with VirusExecutor, VirusChecker II or VirusZ.

Games: x-cellence redesigned, Amiga-Team sought for
Jens [bruZard] Henschel writes:
The web page of the game development team "x-cellence" has been completely redesigned. Our latest project, the RPG "God's Light", has made this necessary.

Unfortunately, we can only work on PC-titles at the moment. For this reason we're still (and have been for a year now) looking for a qualified Amiga-Team which will work together with us on the implementation of our titles for Amiga.

This mainly means the implementation of the X-Fire-Engine in Warp3D or OpenGL. On this basis, it would be relatively easy to develop our titles for Amiga and at the same time support this fantastic platform. (sd) (Translation: sr)

Virus Help Denmark: two new viruses discovered
1.
Two archives found on Aminet contain a new trojan. They are said to be AGA demos but if you run these demos on a PC using 'WinUAE' your system will be deleted. These demos come from a Polish demo group. Why they would program something like this, I don't know.

This is some info about the two archives:

Trojan name... : AME-DSD Trojan (name might be changed later)
Trojan file... : dsd-main
Trojan size... : 93.924 bytes
Trojan archive : AME-DSD.lha
Archive size.. : 6.927.166 bytes
Archive info.. : Dog Star Descends by Amnesty (CGX&AHI compatible)

Trojan name... : PSL-KMJ Trojan (name might be changed later)
Trojan file... : main
Trojan size... : 49.308 bytes
Trojan archive : PSL-KMJ.lha
Archive size.. : 5.530.365 bytes
Archive info.. : Kiss My Jazz by Pic Saint Loup (AGA/CGX)

In the code for these archives you can read:

------------ Code start -----------------------

Warning!!! UAE System for lamers detected!!! - System will reboot after mouse button... run c:delete s:startup-sequence force quiet >NIL:

------------ Code end -------------------------

It is not legal to release destructive programs to the public, and we will see what we can do with this. In almost every country the programmer of such destructive programs can go to jail for this kind of programming.

The xvs.library package will be released very soon.....

Thanks to 'Urban' for the info about the archive.

2.
A new linkvirus has been found a few days ago, we are not sure if this virus is in the wild. It was send directly to Zbigniew Trzcionkowski (the programmer of Safe). Zbigniew received one infected file. This new virus is a clone of the "Bobek-2" linkvirus and is named "Bobek-3". This is able to disable the antivirus programs.

We do not know if this virus was released in any way, so if you get a requester popping up, telling you that something is trying to disable the xvs.library, please let us know.

This is what we know of the virus:

Virus name: Bobek-3
Virus Type: Linkvirus
Virus size: about 2.000 bytes (uses polmorphic engine)

Well, it looks like the Polish virus group is back in action. But maybe not for long. Things will happen very soon.

Thanks to 'Zbigniew' for sending the archive. (ps)

The OOP4A-Project joins forces with PowerD and WizardClasses
"The OOP4A-Project joins forces with PowerD and WizardClasses"
"Stefan Robl, author of OS 3.9's AmiDock, has agreed to support the OOP4A project by providing his class system 'WizardClasses' which is extensively used in all of his programs. The class system also contains - among many other classes - a GUI class system. We hope to release a first package sometime in Q1, 2002 - this will enable programs using OOP4A to use GUI in a truly object oriented way as well.
Martin Kuchinka, author of the PowerD programming language, agreed too to support the OOP4A-Project within PowerD.

New features in this weekend's release of OOP4A are argument types and method overloading. These are the last basic oop functions which had to be implemented, so that the next releases will concentrate on building new classes."

OOP4A stands for Object Oriented Programming for All and offers full oop support to nearly any programming language used on the Amiga. Project start was the around the 5.10.2001. German Pages see title link.

Amiga Inc.

Amiga board elects Frank Wilde as Chairman of the Board (update)
Update:
Carsten Schröder of Amiga Aktuell explains in a special the following terms:
"First of all for clarification: in American companies the "chairman" is the head of the "Board of Directors", some sort of administrative council which is elected by the company shareholders and decides on the basic company politics as well as announcing the "Executive Officers" who are responsible for daily business. Thus the chairman has - at least formally - a higher influence as for example the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of a company."

Wilde brings 18 years of experience in the personal computer industry to Amiga's Board of Directors

(December 6, 2001) The Board of Directors for Amiga Inc. have elected Frank Wilde as its new Chairman of the Board.

Mr. Wilde will bring his many years of experience and leadership to Amiga to help expand its business into new markets while releasing new products.

Mr. Wilde joins Amiga from Ravisent Technologies where he was President and Chief Executive Officer. Frank was appointed Chief Executive Officer of RAVISENT Technologies Inc. in April of 1998, a year after joining the company as Director and President.  Wilde brings over eighteen years of sales, marketing and business development experience in the computer industry holding key industry positions at IBM, Dell Computer Corporation and Memorex Telex Corporation. He has over 15 years P&L experience and is a veteran of six startup companies and has led or been a team member of companies that have raised over 300 million in venture funding. He strongly believes in developing highly competitive and fast growing organizations that enable individuals and teams to grow and develop their professional capabilities in such a way that shareholder value is maximized. Wilde was instrumental in the planning and execution of the company's transition from a hardware company to a software Intellectual Property licensing company. Under his leadership, RAVISENT was able to raise $18 million in private funding in June of 1998. Wilde also led the company through the IPO process, taking the company public in July of 1999, raising $61.4 million.   RAVISENT's flagship product family, CinePlayer, offers consumers a single look-and-feel PC solution for interactive playback of a wide variety of multimedia formats - including CD Audio, MPEG audio, MPEG video, DVD, Dolby Digital audio, MP3 audio, LPCM audio, digital television (DTV), analog (traditional) television, high definition television (HDTV), and "time-shifted" television broadcasts (so-called digital video recorder files or DVR).

“I had many choices on where I wanted to go next and where the best opportunity for the future was.  Bill McEwen and I had been speaking for many months on business plans and other issues, and after meeting with the team, and viewing the technology and their partners, there was no better choice for me than joining Amiga" said Frank Wilde, Chairman of Amiga, Inc. "The Amiga has an amazing past and is well known at Ravisent, but seeing what I have seen of the technology, they have even a brighter future, and I am pleased to be here".

"Frank brings a level of expertise and knowledge that is second to none. His level of excitement and dedication to Amiga, will be seen shortly as we continue to build and release new products" said Bill McEwen, President and CEO of Amiga, Inc.   "I look forward to working with Frank, and the two of us working with the community and our partners on building a very solid future".

Over the years, Wilde and RAVISENT received recognition from numerous business and technology organizations. Most recently, RAVISENT was recognized as the #7 in the 2000 Deloitte & Touche Fast 50 - Fastest Growing Technology Companies in Eastern Pennsylvania. He was also recognized as a Technology Pioneer, an award that is developed jointly by the World Economic Forum and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu to recognize the world's fastest growing, most technologically innovative companies. In 1999, RAVISENT was named the #1 in the Deloitte & Touche Fast 50 - Fastest Growing Technology Companies in Eastern Pennsylvania. Also, RAVISENT was recognized as the #9 in the 1999 in the Deloitte & Touche Fast 500 - Fastest Growing Technology Companies in the United States. In April of 1999, RAVISENT was ranked #8 in the Electronic Business list of Top 20 Small Electronics Companies. Frost & Sullivan granted RAVISENT the 1998 Marketing Engineering Competitive Strategy Award because the company was able to create and implement an effective competitive strategy.

Wilde received a Bachelor's degree in business administration from Seton Hall University. He is a member of the American Management Association, American Electronics Association, USA Reserves Officers Association, Special Forces Decade Association and the Army Aviation Association of Aviators and Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He has also been named to Who's Who in International Business and awarded the Republican National Committee "Businessman of the Year" award for 1999.

  • Enhanced installation script, which now asks in advance if the exsample charts shall be installed.
  • The depot manager now got its final form, you can already buy and sale, more actions are planned (share splits, etc.).
  • Slightly enhanced design, more detailed program messages.

So if you have lots of bandwidth to spare, call me :-) Until then, FTP is down. I'm in contact with Urban Mueller of Aminet but I guess he won't want to check in AROS images every night ;-) So maybe there will be an update just once per month or so.

Thanks go to the tireless AROS developers who have made us so attractive and to all the fans who still hold on to their beloved system :-) The images will come back, promised. And you will see the V1.0 of AROS :-)« (ps)

Adobe SVG Viewer for Unix
Since a couple of days Adobe is offering the SVG Viewer for downlaod on the page for unsupported versions as version 3.0 beta 1 in English for Red Hat Linux 7.1 and Solaris 8.

The SVG Viewer is a web-browser plugin for displaying vector images of the XML basing W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (see Heise's articel, German). The Windows and Mac versions have an ActiveX interface for the Internet Explorer and a Netscape plugin interface for Netscape 4.x (and by this it is supposed to run with Konqueror and other browsers supporting the Netscape interface at 100%). Contrary to that the Linux version has a Mozilla interface and does not support Netscape's plugin architecture which is poorly documented, anyway.

In a first try this plugin could not be used under SuSE Linux 7.2 with Mozilla 0.9.5 RPM, it was not recognized, but Mozilla 0.9.5 and the plugin still are beta versions. For the final versions a better cooperation of both may be expected.

With the Adobe SVG Viewer available for Linux and Solaris the popularity and use of SVG might increase very much.

Of course the Linux port is available as binary only unfortuantely, meaning that it mainly contains of .so files (libraries) compiled for x86 Linux. That is, though there is a x86 Linux port now, an Amiga port is as far away as ever. Even the efforts of Mozilla.org are promising more remedy. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Library: SDL V1.2.3 Beta
On 2. December 2001 Gabriele Greco published the Beta-version 1.2.3 of the Multimedia-Library "SDL" for AmigOS and MorphOS. All the improvements and bug fixes of 1.2.3. should have been implemented in this version.

The following amiga-specific improvements have been made:
  • Completely compatible with libnix (the 68k as well as the MorphOS version). Some demos (testsprite, testpalette) show that the libnix-version is 30% faster than the ixemul-version
  • Bugfix: A crash or a corruption of the memory list was possible in the hardware-accellerating and full-screen mode.
  • Modification: General clean up of the CyberGFX-Codes. Maybe this has also removed the Colors-Bug of Picasso 96 (wasn't tested).
Gabriele Greco is hoping to finish the final version by next weekend in order to add the new sources to the official Source and Development-Package on the official site SDL-Site.

The archive contains: include, docs, gcc 68k lib, SAS/C 68k lib and gcc MorphOS PPC lib.

The SDL enables the platform-independent programming of games and multimedia products.

Amiga-Society.de: It's all over
Horst Diebel writes:
1.12.2001 - This is the end of the Amiga-Society.de. Why should we create such a site that is of no use at all and that only causes trouble?

This question has occurred to me over the last few weeks more and more frequently.

After our relaunch we had more and more attacks on our site and in particular on my PC, that is to say my e-mail address. A week ago it finally happened that I gradually switched off the e-mail addresses because only virulent e-mails were arriving.

The initiators will know what I mean.... maybe they have reached their objective in this way.

By the end of the year I will have the site switched off! The competition will of course be finished - relevant addresses will be available before the end of the year and approximately until the 6th January 2002. The announcement of the lucky winners will be around mid-January 2002.

After this event I will retire completely. The project "battlefield" will certainly be continued by some of the participants - alternative Internet addresses will probably be announced very soon.

BI would like to thank all the people who have helped create the site.

Bye....

Dear customers, since the draw we have been planning on occasion of our KDH Advent calendar possibly would violate the rules of the competition rights, as it already was pointed out to us, we decided to stop this draw in the interest of a fair and justly unobjectionable competition. Currently it is being investigated to find a legal form to continue the draw.

BlitzBasic PC & BlitzBasic AMIGA
For some weeks the site www.blitz3d.x-cellence.de (title link) is now online. It deals with the topic BlitzBasic on the PC. Since I come from the Amiga BlitzBasic I would like to create a section on this topic as well. Especially now that the development of BlitzBasic for the Amiga continues. It only justifies the efforts though if there are interested people who would appreciate that. So: who has interest in a BlitzBasic AMIGA site should show it by leaving a comment.

There already exists a bulletin board on the site which would also be extended by an Amiga section. I'd like to thank you already for your interest.

Individual Computers: New xsurfadsl.device with appp update
A new version of the xsurfadsl.device, the PPPoE driver for our networking card X-Surf, can be found in the support-area of our website. For the first time, the archive also contains an updated version of the appp.device that has been licensed from Haage & Partner (see article from November, 12th).

The source code of version 2.7 that we got from Haage & Partner was different from the binary that is being sold with the Genesis package in OS3.9 (V2.3). Questions about the changes between the two versions could not be answered until now. The new version provided by us (V3.1) has been updated mainly on internal structures: The device-base code (the interface to the OS) is completely re-written, so opening up to eight units, and freeing all resources after closing them (especially memory) is ensured. Therefore, we also recommend installing the new appp.device, even if you do not own an X-Surf Ethernet card.

At this point, we want to draw your attention to the ISAcatweasel.device, which allows using the PC-Catweasel under Amithlon. Since we have not been able to run Amithlon on any of our computers, we depend you your help in testing. The new archive is now packed with LHA, so difficulties with unpacking the ARJ archive are eliminated. Adapted Catweasel mountlists should make the installation a lot easier. (ps)

On 28th of November 2001 Gabriele Greco has published a beta version 1.2.2 of his MorphOS port from the multimedia-library 'Simple DirectMedia Layer'.

This library is available for a wide range of platforms - AmigaOS, BeOS, Linux, Macintosh and Windows belong to them. It therefore enables to develop games and other multimedia products like MPEG players and emulators at several platforms.

Cloanto (ANF)

Cloanto Releases Amiga Forever 5.0
Cloanto released today version 5.0 of Amiga Forever, the official Amiga emulation and connectivity package for PCs. New features include just-in-time (JIT) compiler technology to dramatically increase execution speed, new ROM and operating system files to emulate not only the Amiga computers but also Commodore's CDTV and CD³² game consoles, and Software Manager, a content delivery and management system for one-click news, updates and downloads.

An experimental version of the revolutionary Disk2FDI software, which makes it possible to read Amiga floppy disks on the PC, is provided for the technically inclined. Other improvements include support for new Windows XP and DirectX features and new Picasso96 technology to better map Amiga graphics calls to low-level DirectX functionality and native x86 code, in order to achieve maximum performance without sacrificing compatibility. Cloanto publicly benchmarked the new version of the emulation software to be 30 times faster than the previous version (which already matched the CPU performance of the fastest Amiga 68060 silicon).

Amiga Forever can be installed or run from CD-ROM (no installation or reboot required), and is also available in a downloadable Online Edition. In either case, Amiga application can run side by side with the host operating system and its applications, while taking advantage of features such as virtual memory, advanced power management, digital rights management, NTFS filing system, wireless networking, and thousands of past, present and future drivers for peripherals, specifications and gadgets which the Amiga would otherwise not be able to support. For additional information please refer to the Amiga Forever home page at amigaforever.info. (ps)

Hyperion Gives More Info about Amiga OS4
"First of all, the idea is to get the AmigaOS from 68k to the PPC. Of course, there's a lot of code in the system, and lots of code that's beyond our reach (hardware drivers in ROMs, for example). So one of the core components is of course the 68k emulator. The JIT version is already very fast, if you have a 040/25 and a fast 603e, you'll actually be able to run some programs faster than on the physical 040/25...

The second core component will be Exec SG. This is a reimplementation of the original Exec, written in C and placed onto a hardware abstraction layer so that it ports easily from one hardware to the other (remember, we intent to support a lot of different hardware, some of these will not have the Amiga chipset anymore). New features (compared to the old Exec) will be virtual memory. Don't worry, you'll not have to select "Shutdown" from the "Start" menu, you can just switch off ;) We also want to introduce some weak form of memory protection, like protecting code from being overwritten.. Later version will also include resource tracking.

The third mayor (new) building block is the new-style library interface. The cool thing about this is that it enables old 68k libraries to act as new OS4 libraries. To OS4 applications, 68k libraries will look like PPC native libraries. OTOH, new PPC only libraries will look like old 68k libraries to emulated 68k programs. This is achieved by the new library loader: Whenever a library is loaded, the "missing" part of the interface will be generated on-the-fly (by creating so called "stub" functions). So, even though a library is not yet ported to PPC, it can be used as if it were a PPC library, and as soon as it's ported, the program using it will use PPC code, even without recompiling the program (sorry if that comes out a bit complicated....)

For the initial release, we want to have at least the new Exec SG (otherwise, the whole system wouldn't work, anyway), a PPC native DOS, the TCP stack, new file system, and some devices. If there's still time, we'll port as much as possible to native PPC.

I think we have around 20 developers working on OS4.

A solution we're thinking about is loading a kernel image from the hard disk's boot block. The Amiga's disk structure allows arbitraty sized boot blocks, so theoretically, a whole kernel could fit there. We will in any case offer the possibility to use something like SetPatch (including the dreaded reboot). This means that you do not have to reformat your harddrive or even repartition or something like that. As another possibility, we will try to offer the bootblock loading.

We discussed the possibility to include a UAE in the system that will kick in when binaries are executed that require the chipset. That way, running old games could be made transparent

We will apply for BPlan Pegasos developer program, but we will not get special treatment.

We will make as much information as possible available as soon as possible. This includes documents as well as pre-release version of OS 4 for developers. Of course we want as much stuff on OS 4 as possible, so this is going to be a high priority."

Pictures from Spoletium 4
On November 24-25, 2001, Cloanto attended the Spoletium 4 event in Spoleto, Italy, providing a wireless webcam service. Pictures are now online at http://cloanto.com/news/20011124spoletium4.html

In a computing world in which hardware and software have exploded beyond imagination, where lone pioneers have been displaced by billion-dollar investments, where programming manuals that used to ship with affordable home computers have been replaced by multi-volume and constantly changing SDKs which are beyond the reach of the average user, the demo scene continues to remind us that writing software can still be a sublime fusion of expression and creativity, of technology and art, a medium in which the germ of talent can be discovered and nourished, where individuals exchange ideas and compete with others, but, as they build universes of which they are to be in full control, are also confronted most of all in an intimate challenge with their inner selves. Thank you, friends at Spoletium, for keeping the flame alive! (ps)

ISIS comments blocking of websites
On 22. November 2001 the Chaos Computer Club published that the Internet provider ISIS is practicing censorship (we reported about) by blocking particular websites. This was stopped this morning, as the company became aware of this situation. They said, that those blockades were a result of some experiments of one of thier technicians.

The company pointed out, that whatever they would do, they would be the fool, anyway. If they block sites people will complain about censorship, if they don't they are supposed to support radical right-wing content. Marius Schwarz wrote:
Another week is over and again there is a new version of OOP for All (Object Oriented Programming for All or OOP4A). New possibilities now are statistical contexts and methods synchronisation. The compiler backend was enhanced and the documentation got one more page. You can find all this under the above link.

OOP4A offers an OOP interface to non-object oriented programming languages and it's language comprehensive. (ps) (Translation: mj)

Amiga Arena: Interview with Florac Roland (AmiCAD)
Olaf Köbnik wrote:
Amiga Arena - Interview Project
The Amiga still offers specialized application software solutions, today, but which unfortunately aren't widely spread due to small usership. "AmiCAD" is one of those programs, which is being developed by Florac Roland. This software is about an editor for creation of electronic wiring diagrams.

The Amiga Arena talked to Florac Roland about developing "AmiCAD" and regrettably it turns out again that there is less than few feedback from the users.

Florac Roland still is urgently wanting users to help him in translating and creating a guide.

"AmiCAD" really is an interesting software and ought to be supported to ensure further development.

Who would like to help with the German localization or manual might write to: Florac Roland (roland.florac@fnac.net. (sd) (Translation: mj)

PDA: AmigaNCP V2.2 Beta 2
AmigaNCP is an implementation of the Psion link protocol which is e.g. built into the Psion S3/S3a/S3C and Psion S5 palmtop's ROM. It's main purpose is to provide vice-versa nfs-like file access.

This small update (untested, due to lack of Psion), tries to fix the following two reported issues:
  • NCP_LinkRemoteRun() now allows up to 128 chars file names in EPOC32 (S5) mode
  • AmigaNCP-FileSystem now (hopefully correctly) implementes ACTION_SET_DATE; this should fix the "datestamps not set for backup" problems reported by some people
  • fixed file format for Amiga2Psion clipboard functionality (hopefully)
  • now sends a "Clipboard changed" message to the remote clipboard server when a clipboard exchange has been executed (hopefully)
AmigaNCP requires:
  • AmigaOS 2.04 or better (localization supported).
  • the IBM-PC version of the 3-Link cable.

CD³²-/CDTV-Emulator: Akiko released
The CD32/CDTV emulator Akiko for Windows is now available for download on the Airsoft Softwair homepage.

Akiko emulates a CD32 and a CDTV on PCs with Windows with the help of an enhanced version of WinUAE. Akiko does not need the so called extended roms of those consoles, it just requires Kickstart rom 3.1 for CD32 emulation and Kickstart rom 1.3 for CDTV emulation. The enhanced version of the WinUAE is included with the Akiko distribution archive.

The source code of this WinUAE version is available for download on the Airsoft Softwair homepage. Akiko is Shareware and the demo version has some limitations. (sd)

MIDI: Tracks & Fields now For Free, Programmer wanted
«It was ages when v1.02 was released and it was shareware (demo). Both authors (Anders & Dick) left amiga so Jonas Hulten has been updating it for me. As he has not much time for it he gave me the last source code so i can search for another coder.

As i can't get in touch with the first original coder Anders Larsson (also made far updated pc version) i can't upload the source for free on aminet but i can give it to a serious coder who want's to continue on it.

So if you are a serious coder and want to continue on tracks&fields please contact me and tell me what programs you made so far. You have to know assembler.

In the package there is a full registered version 1.02 and 1.04. There is a bug that comes more on latest version that crashes when editing patterns so there fore i put up the older v1.02.

- Warning. Backup your old preference as v1.04 saves also screenmode u use and it doesn't work if you change to another gfx card and use the saved prefs from the first card. This should be fixed if i find any coder out there.

History:

1.04
  • Used the 1.02 source instead
  • Ctrl F3-F5: cut-copy-paste only the column the cursor is on
1.03
  • Works on graphics cards - sadly the cursor looks wierd as a result.
  • Doesn't scroll several rows at a time when playing. This is good.
  • Removed writes to address 0 when config was loaded.
  • Minor spelling corrections.
  • Screen mode selection in config.
  • Scaling now autoselects the current position
  • About screen doesn't show up at program start

  • Created a Linux manual to tex conversion plugin.
  • Updated all plugins with an extra PROC, em_begin(). This is used as a pre-parse PROC, and is needed to tell EvenMore if it is necessary to create a new memory space for the file if the resulting contents from the plugin will be bigger than the original. DVD Press Release on "Black List" Start
The German Vereinigung für Datanschutz e.V (consortium for data protection), short DVD, together with many experts from the fields of IT security and data protection found out that users of websites often got forced to use cookies, JavaScript or ActiveX, because there's no alternative version available.

That's why from now on the DVD publishes a black list as an official directory of such addresses.

"Offerors who cannot tolerate that users want to decide about their security settings on their machines indepentently, should ask themself if they realy are set up for the Internet future. Who thinks to have to punish users for their conscience of security by withholding his pages from those, did not understand what e-commerce and online services actually are about", said Karin Schuler, member of the DVD steering committee. Editor: CED PPC 4.21b for MorphOS
This is the official MorphOS PPC port of CygnusEd Professional 4.21. You need a properly installed MorphOS release as well as the original CygnusED 4 CDROM to install the PowerPC port, the 68k version of the program won't be modified. After installation you can still use the 68k version of CygnusEd if you plan to install it on the same partition. The updated ed frontend automatically detects if it's run under MorphOS or AmigaOS and uses the proper CygnusEd main binary. Please note that you need the original CygnusEd4 CDROM to apply this patch/ppc update. It is available from various sources including Schatztruhe.

Fixes: Current directory is now correct if launched from WB, the -keepio and -sticky arguments now work properly & printing shouldn't crash anymore.

Game: New Demo-Engine for SOMS available
The new demo engine is better and faster, furthermore graphics have been enhanced and according to Silvio Kurze contains sound now, too.

SOMS is about an action adventure like never before released for the Amiga. Action devotees well be have fun with the about 100 different enemies, numerous screen filling final enemies and extended levels as well, especially if they get supported by 20 configurable weapons and the same amount of spells!

If the adventure devotee gets horrored by the above, it is to say that combats can be avoided by cleverness, if you deal with the numerous puzzles.

Also the role game devotees, disliking the minimal possiblities to equip the characters in action games, can knock down satisfyed! The variety starts with free naming of the 4 main characters, goes thru the continuous enhancement of features and capabilities of your own character, the detailed multiple-choice dialogs with about 100 persons, the sophisticated weapon system, thru the 10 characters with own tactics, views and goals of life joining the force one by one.

Chaos Computer Club: Censorship is being done
A provider from Nordrhein-Westfalen (German county) starts to block Internet sites.

In some sort of hurrying obedience at least one Internet provider in Düsseldorf (Germany), the ISIS company, has constricted access to several Internet sites by changing the DNS entry on the ISIS name server. Yesterday, the Chaos Computer Club got aware of this censorship effort.

On a hearing of the county government of Düsseldorf with diverse Internet providers it was discussed by what means providers would be able to block access to diverse outlandish websites, [1].

This was in main about sites spreading radical right-wing content, but also rotten.com, specialized to collect more or less tastily picture material from the Internet, was condsidered to be dignified to be censored. Rotten.com quote thier extreme photo collection, among other of of casualties, as serious dealing with the manor of freedom of speech.

Philipp Schulte of CCC Düsseldorf in view of this faint-hearted censorship effort said: "It is to assume that the still very short list of objectionable websites will increase very much in the future and other providers will follow the example of censorship outrider ISIS".

To use a different name server appears to be a work-around for customers. eg. 194.246.96.49 (dns2.denic.de), 194.246.96.25 (dns3.denic.de), 194.25.2.131 (dns02.btx.dtag.de).

The Chaos Computer Club's considered opinion is that censorship by technical means is not a suitable way to handle content supposed to be problematic. "The massive restriction of the citizens in exercising their freedom of opinion is beyond the pale", added Jens Ohlig, CCC speaker.

Though the hearing of the county government in Düsseldorf on November 13 ended 'result open', according to numerous particitpants, customers of those providers, who are in hurrying obedience complyed with the governments suggestions, on access to several sites instead of the original notes receive an 'informer form' [2] to announce Internet sites thought to be problematic to the county government NRW.

The county government's approach to filter the Internet offers and by this to attempt to establish censorship is a critical step into the wrong direction in the opinion of the Chaos Computer Club .

"Instead of establishing technical filters, which reconcilableness with the constitutional law at least is questionable and which technical implementation is easy to avoid anyway, the government authorities rather should focus their efforts to sponsor the loom of media competences. More important than technical methods would it be to emerge a social immunity for content thought to be problematic", added Andy Müller-Maguhn, club speaker, to the club's statement. [3]

To what extent other companies in NRW followed the suggestions of the county government, without being legally bound to, is being reviewed. (ps) (Translation: mj)

SharkPPC is not a development of ELBOX?!
On Sunday 18th of November in 2001 on the VGR-sites (title link) a very interesting news message has been published: The SharkPPC which was introduced by ELBOX at the fair is supposed to be nothing more than a relabeled Sonnet PPC-card. If you will have a look at the Sonnet-product site it will confirm it.

Accordingly ELBOX has not developed "its" SharkPPC for itself. Therefore the introduction of the SharkPPC+ (which is supposed to have IDE-controller, AGP-slot and USB) can be doubted. (ps) (Translation: dr)

Hyperion: Warp3D support for Permedia 3 and ATI Radeon
Hyperion Entertainment has entered into an agreement with third parties to ensure Permedia 3 and ATI Radeon support for Warp3D, effectively doubling the number of supported chipsets.

"We are thrilled to be able to open up ever more possibilities to users of Amiga PCI busboards", says Ben Hermans, managing partner of Hyperion Entertainment. "The Permedia 3 is around 6 times faster than the Permedia 2 and offers a lot more functionality including full OpenGL compliance. The chipset is still frequently used in high-end 3D workstations. The ATI Radeon family is undeniably state of the art with well-rounded 2D performance and top-notch 3D performance that is on par with anything out there in the Wintel world. Support for the Radeon family will allow Amiga users to enjoy unrivalled performance and functionality."

Hyperion Entertainment brings 3D graphics to PDA's
Hyperion Entertainment is very pleased to announce that it has finalised an initial version of its "Warp3D" technology, a mature, small foot-print, feature-rich yet very fast 3D solution for ElateTM/ Amiga DETM based devices.

Warp3D allows content-creators to effortlessly deploy 3D graphics on low-end devices such as PDA's, web-tablets and 3G phones and is the product of years of development in response to concrete performance challenges and 3D technology.

Hyperion intends to showcase the Warp3D technology by producing several PDA oriented games.

"A lot of the PDA content we are seeing now is a throw-back to the earlier days of entertainment software and whilst this is not necessarily a bad thing, we do believe that users would like to enjoy sophisticated 3D content on these devices as well. Our contract-work for LithTech Inc. also means we were able to incorporate extensive research and expertise in the field of software rendering which resulted in one of the fastest software renderers in the industry - the only viable solution on a non 3D-accelerated PDA. Add to that a highly optimised subset of OpenGL which is nonetheless capable of running industry-standard 3D engines like Quake IITM and LithTechTM and you have a piece of very compelling technology indeed."

Warp3D was already successfully field-tested on the SH3 powered version of Sharp's Zaurus PDA and is due for imminent release.

The technology will remain in continuous development and will be licensed to interested parties.
For the complete press release see title link. (ps)

Update for our show report
Since I did not talked to Titan Computer on the show, I called Michael Garlich, today, to be able to add the news from Titan Computer. The details described below have been added to the show report (title link):

Highlight at the booth of Titan Computer was a video cut software "Motion Studio" for MorphOS capable of reading DV format. The development of the software is expected to be released along with the Pegasos board by bplan. It was presented with a beamer what the video cut software already can do. Unfortunately it is not possible to port the software to AmigaOS, due to firwire being required.

More applications under development:

The office package "Papyrus" was finished at 90% for MorphOS and is to be ported to the AmigaOS 4.0 later on.
Candy Factory II, software to create vidoe titles, logos, and web images for MophOS. The created pictures can be imported by MotionStudio using an interface.
A MorphOS version of Burn-IT Pro (DVD burning software) was presented. Said to be finished until April 2002.

Games under development:

Beside of the above mentioned applications Titan Computer is developing two new games, too. "Rage Hard" is a 3D multiplayer shooter similar to Counterstrike. This game is being developed for MorphOS and the new Amigas. "Alien Nations" is another game for MorphOS and AmigaOS (PPC) under development, a build-up strategy game similar to Settlers.

Titan Comuter will port their current software product line to MorphOS, as much titles as possible. (ps) (Translation: mj)

AMIGA 2001: Gleanings by amiga-news.de (Update III)
The show AMIGA 2001, which took place on 17th and 18th November 2001, was organized by Falke Media and was held at the Mediapark 6 in Cologne, Germany, on about 718 sq.yd. exhibition space. By our count there were about 1,000 visitors on the show, consuetudinary most of them came on Saturday.

bplan GmbH - Pegasos-System
Very much interesting was the first official presentation of the run capable Pegasos machine by the bplan GmbH, utilizing the operating system MorphOS. Gerald Carda presented a test program to us which displayed plasma effects. Unaccelerated (about the speed of 68050/50) this program generates 4 pictures per second (FPS). The same program compiled for MorhpOS generates 192 FPS.

Thomas Knäbel and Gerald Carda told us about a number of between 100 and 200 developer systems to be available from early January 2002. Interested developers might register using a registration page at bplan, before long. If there will be more registrations than boards available, it will be selected by progam priority. The developers should send bug reports, if there will occur problems.

Machines for end-users will follow about 8 - 12 weeks later. Those machines will cost about 1,000 Euro and are planned to be delivered with the following equipment:
  • 8 MB AGP graphic board
  • 128 MB RAM
  • DVD Drive
  • 20 GB HD
  • Mouse and Keyboard

The interesting point of MorhpOS for sure is, that existing PPC programs can be started directly on this system. Companies like Titan-Computer and Epic interactive will extensively adapt their programs to this system.

Haage&Partner - Amiga OS XL
Amiga OS XL, the new super-fast Amiga emulators for x86 machines were presented on three different computers at Haage&Partner. The speed is impressing and faszinating at the same time.

Amiga OS XL consists of two emulator systems: AMIthlon and Amiga XL for QNX in a bundle. The emulators are similar to each other in many parts, but there are basic differences, too. With this prevalent Amiga 68k applications run 10 - 20 times faster on current PC hardware than on a convetional 68060 systems. This tremendous speed is achieved by a modified and accelerated emulator. With it one gets versions of PageStream, ImageFX, ArtEffect, Cinema4D, Real3D, and any other program fast like turbo.

Haage&Partner's highlight is a x86 machine built into a luxury computer case of noble design and with Amiga OS XL installed. The body of the computer was made of aluminium, the front side is of azure plastic.

While talking to H&P they appeared to be surprised by the allmost all-time positive visitors' response and amazed at the still great demand for information, though there have been many press releases before. Sales could have been better, but satisfied.

Hyperion - AmigaOS 4.0 for PPC
Without doubt the most interesting thing on the second day of the show was our talk to Ben Hermans, Thomas and Hans-Jörg Frieden of Hyperion Entertainment about AmigaOS 4.0 for PPC. It was determined and safe by contract that Hyperion will develop AmigaOS 4.0 for PPC. Aspired term of completion of an initial distributing version is February 2002. This distributing version still will have parts of 68k code, which will be handed in later by BoingBag updates when finished.

Hyperion will work together with bplan to make the AmigaOS 4.0 PPC running on the Pegasos machine. Hyperion additionally talked to many other hardware and software developers to make their products compatible, too. This gave a very positive sign, because after a long period of time a joint line and goal is being followed, again.

Titan Computer - Update 20. November.2001

DCE - G-REX
Thomas Dellert and Michael Göken of DCE presented the PCI busboard G-Rex working in an A4000 with Cyberstrom 604/68060 and AmigaOS 3.9 as well as WarpUP.

An USB card for mouse and keyboard, a Voodoo graphic board (3/3000), a WIN-TV card with radio tuner, and a sound card (Terratec 512i) were working on the PCI board. There are many good reasons for this solution: Graphic speed, wheel mouse and multimedia keyboard, support of the USB card, 100 MBit network card can be connected; all in all it became possible to use cheap generic PC hardware by the PCI busboard G-Rex. The board is being offerd for A4000D/T and A1200.

Elbox - Mediator
Elbox presented their Mediator system. The following models were shown:
  • Mediator PCI ZIV
  • Mediator PCI 1200
  • Mediator PCI 4000
  • Shark PPC G3/G4

Again the reasons mentioned regarding DCE match here. With help of a PCI busboard it is possible to use cheap PCI hardware for various purposes.

Other Hardware-Products

Jens Schönfeld of Individual Computers showed us a pre-run model of the interface card VarioIO, which will be available before Christmas, already.

Basing on a Logitech 2 button mouse Schönfeld developed a real Amiga / Atari mouse. Also this production will start next days.

Thorsten Hansen of Kato Development showed us the prototype of the Melody successor. This card will have the functions of the Melody card plus the following specialities:
  • MP3 audio not only can be decoded in real-time, but also encoded.
  • Analog mixer function.
  • Digital in/out (optical / coaxial)

Michael Böhmer showed his USB controller Subway with which you can connect prevalent USB devices to the clock port of the A1200. Up to four devices can be use without an additional USB hub. VMC started to develop drivers, already. Currently drivers for mouse and keyboard are available. Drivers for printers, digital cameras, and scanners are scheduled.

Other Software-Products

Amiga Forever 5.0
Michael Battilana of Cloanto presented the new Amiga Forever 5.0. Amiga Forever is about an official licensed Amiga emulator package for Windows and other platforms. Just put the CD into the drive, click on the icon and it runs. Eight different emulation programs, all of the required Kickstart ROMs, Workbenchs, licenses, as well as an all-around package with useful Amiga sofware are included.
Due to the implemented JIT compiler (just-in-time) version 5.0 is about 30 time faster than Amiga Forever 4. The emulator comes on a CD containing the famous video "The Deathbed Vigil" (1 h, 59 min.) and the video "Jay Miner Speech" (49 min.).
But Amiga Forever 5.0 is available for download as online version, too.

epic interactive - THE FEEBLE FILES
epic announce THE FEEBLE FILES for the Amiga. This game is about a cartoon adventure. Beside of the MorphOS port there also will be an AmigaOS verison. The Amiga version will be available as entirely localized versions in Engish and German (voice output). An Amiga with 4 MB graphic board, 68060 or PPC, and at least 32 MB RAM is required.
Development of the Amiga version already started and epic hopes to be able to deliver the finished product already before Christmas 2001.

Descent:Freespace
Hyperion showed the new game Descent-Freespace. This game is about a space shooter. The Amiga port of Freespace was finished at 99% and will be available as 68k (with 3D hardware only) and PPC version from H&P, soon. Those who ordered the game on the show got a free demo CD for testing at home, already.

Project Crashsite
Markus Pohlmann (program) and Denis Comtesse (music) are busy developing the science fiction role game Project Crashsite. The place of action in this game is a colonialized second system consiting of two moons. The player takes the part of the "Future Security Corps" which is the system's police.

The game's goal is to stabilize the unstable situation of this system. This is not easy to achieve, due to a big conspiracy defering the relation of potency. The player is sent into the game almost without any background information about the conspiracy to make him choose "pal and enemy" himself, because depending on his choice the game becomes easier or more difficult.

Currently four people are working on this game, thus it is not possible to announce some date of comlpetion at the time being.

PuzzleBOBS
In cooperation with Emanuele Cesaroni of Nexus Development the Amiga Arena and Fun Time World present the game in partnership. PuzzleBOBS is about a "Bust´n Move" clone. From now on a demo version is available on http://www.funtime-world.de/puzzle.html or from the support page at the Amiga Arena.

Technical backgrounds:
  • PuzzleBOBS is completely configurable.
  • Screenmode (AGA / OCS / ECS / Picasso96 or CyberGraphX compatible graphic boards).
  • Bitplanes: up to 16- and 24Bit screens.
  • Playable in three languages (German, Italian, English)
  • Playable from HD, full or partly installation (min. 14 MB)
  • Written in 100% assembler
  • Import of own levels and sounds.

Backgrounds, bubbles, object speed, music and sound effects, explosion style, and masses of other little things, as well, can be configured to match your own personal desire.

The game was programmed to allow different bubbles to have different characteristics. There are bubbles that bounce back form walls, which of course simplifies severity. The game runs in full multitasking on it's own screen or in a window on the Workbench.

When the game's window becomes inactive the game automatically turns to sleep mode, which is a special feature to let you continue your work on the Workbench. In sleep mode even every audio channel and colour palette get's released.

Miscellaneous

GGS Data - Amiga Show
Gunne Steen of the Swedish vendor GGS Data informed us about an Amiga show in Göteborg, Sweden, planned to take place on 2. March 2002 (maybe also on 3. March 2002). The respective website will be online in about seven days. Comanies and user groups are heartily invited to attend the show as exhibitors.

Psyria - Music
Dennis Lohr gave us a CD on the show on which he eternalized his trance song for amiga-news.de. This song also is available for download: Amiga News Theme (ca. 7 MB). Again thank you very much to Dennis for taking the trouble to create this song. This realy is a privilege to us!

Annex - Music
Daniel Schulz of Annex assured us that the music group, known by several Amiga songs, still is alive. Meantime many new pices of music were recored, extracts can be downloaded as MP3.

Still the vocals are missing, because the band still is searching for a female singer. She should have been singing in a band before, come from the dance/trance field, and live in the Rhein-Main area (Germany). Interessted singers might contact Daniel Schulz (include a demo if possible). Two maxi-singles with three songs on each and maybe a long-player with all songs are planned.

Virtual Dimension
The crew of Virtual Dimension did many interviews and took many pictures for their show video. The video is estimated to be published before Christmas.
Furthermore Virtual Dimension introduced the round and text basing space game StarEmpire II by Christian Becker . Up to 32 players are possible.

Airbrush Paradise Tingler
Rolf Tingler prettified diverse things with different motives. Of course mainly motives with BoingBalls were desired. Starting from cell phones thru Swiss pocket knives everything got "boinged" with airbrush technic.

Upshot:

Interesting hard- and software solutions were presented. There was good mood on the show and intensive discussing everywhere. However, it is to be said that in spite of all those innovations and in spite of the positive signs some certain questions were left without an answer, cause neither Amiga Inc. nor Eytech or Escena attended the show. Thats where descriptions regarding the plans of Amiga Inc. for the AmigaOne are required.

Finally one discerning word regarding the organization. The corridors along the "focal points" on the upper floor were way to narrow. Occasionally there were such big crowd that it was hard to get to the booths.

Christoph Dietz, Petra Struck as well as Meike Hilke (photos) were on the show for amiga-news.de.
