Sprite/Icon/Map editor: Raster Master V2.0 R87 for Windows 10/11
Raster Master (amiga-news.de reported) is a sprite/icon/map editor for Windows 10/11 which generates RayLib-, PutImagedata and Map code for gcc, AmigaBASIC, Amiga C, Amiga Pascal, QuickBasic, QB64, Quick C, Turbo Pascal, freepascal, Turbo C, Turbo Basic, Power Basic, FreeBASIC, GWBASIC, BASICA, and PC-BASIC (YouTube video).

Now version 2.0 R87 has been released. Changes:
  • Maps can now be 128x128 and 256x256 tiles
  • when Paint tool is selected in Map Editor hold SHIFT key it will replace all instances of the Tile
  • Discovered that onpaint events were being generated when the Labels for coordinates were being updated. This is probably a bug with LCL. This caused the program to repaint the pixels/map area when it was not required. Changed all instances in program to statusbar to update coordinate information. This may have caused performance issues with slower speed computers

Management of ADF files: adflib V0.8.0 for Windows, Linux and macOS
Laurent Clevy first released adflib in 1999 in version 0.7.8 (Aminet). The portable C library, written mainly in C, is used to manage Amiga-formatted devices such as hard disks and ZIP disks or to swap them out via the .ADF format. Besides Volker Schwaberow's approach to convert the library into the programming language Rust, the original library is now also being updated, currently maintained by Tomasz Wolak.

Reading files has been bug-fixed and writing them has been introduced as a new function. Changes in version 0.8.0:
  • full file read and write support
  • added support for hard- and soft links
  • added Linux native devices
  • updated and improved unadf
  • added new command-line utilities:adf_floppy_create, adf_floppy_format, adf_show_metadata
  • numerous bugfixes and improvements
  • more extensive testing
  • added configuration to build with CMake (ie. to facilitate building for Windows)
  • added (unofficial) Debian and Ubuntu packaging

Demoparty: Posadas 2023 (Spain)
From 30 June to 2 July, this year's edition of the Posadas demoparty will take place in Posadas, Spain. As the Spanish graphic designer José A. 'jojo073' Gonzáles tells us - the French magazine BOING interviewed him in its fifth issue and has now published this interview in Spanish - the demo party was first organised with numerous competitions in the 1990s and was brought back to life a few years ago after a long break. To get in the mood, he published a pixel artwork showing a character from a film, which the experienced film connoisseur will surely be able to identify without difficulty... (dr)

Event: Look Behind You and Gameplan at the Level Up in Salzburg (Austria)
In addition to Amiga Future, the two German publishers Look Behind You and Gameplan will also participate at Level Up in Austria for the first time this year. Below you can read the translation of their official press release:

"Level Up is the first Austrian gaming and eSports festival that brings together recreational gamers, professionals, gaming fans, as well as creators and stars of the scene in an experiential atmosphere to experience new trends and celebrate their shared passion. But retro computing will not be neglected either: in a separate retro area, those interested can experience historic computers live.

The two German publishers Look Behind You and Gameplan will be taking part in Level Up for the first time this year. At the joint booth, the two publishers, who focus on video game culture and retro technology, will offer their complete book program, including 'Spielkonsolen und Heimcomputer 1972-2022', 'Die Geheimnisse von Monkey Island', 'Atari: Kunst und Design der Videospiele' und 'Die Kunst von Assassin's Creed Valhalla'. Publishers Winnie Forster (Gameplan) and Nico Barbat (LBY) will be on hand throughout.

Visitors will also be able to play through the adventure game 'The Secret of Monkey Island' on an Amiga 1000 at the joint booth of LBY and Gameplan. A special exhibit will be the rare Vectrex game console, released in 1982, which visitors will also be able to try out for themselves. Revolutionary at the time, the device from General Consumer Electronics features a built-in vector screen and is often referred to as the first 'truly portable' game console.

There's something for everyone at Level Up, whether you're a hobby gamer, eSports pro, cosplayer, retro fan, indie aficionado, card gamer, tabletop player or game-loving family. Particularly successful program items from previous years will be back this year. Among others, the Level Up Icarace World Championships, the high-class Rocket League tournament Morekats Mayhem #4, cosplay action in cooperation with Animix, tabletop and card gaming in cooperation with Gamers Finest Salzburg and CardArena, a drone championship, as well as a charity stream to raise money for charity. There will also be a separate FSK16+ area, where players and orgs will battle it out in tournaments without youth clearance.

Level Up will take place from July 1 to 2, 2023 at the Messezentrum Salzburg. Tickets are available in advance and at the box office. To ensure that this year's event is once again a pleasure for the whole family, visitors under 16 pay a reduced price, while children under 12 attend the event completely free of charge." (snx)

The plot: "The wizards have been at it again, and this time they've accidentally opened Hellgates under the castle! Now it's up to you, brave brave Sir Declan, to search each procedurally generated castle dungeon and find enough magical shards to access and close its gate.

Armed with a magical Caster Sword, potions you find, and perhaps the occasional legendary charm, Sir Declan must fight demons that escaped from the gate, avoid traps, and collect treasures to trade for battle enhancements, before finally facing the Hellgates themselves." Features:
  • 50fps 2D hell-blasting action
  • Billions of procedurally generated dungeons
  • Multiple control schemes,

Text comparison tool: ADiffView 2.4
ADiffView compares two ASCII text files and displays the differences graphically. The diff engine uses Eugene Myers' diff algorithm. After Uwe Rosner had already published version 2.4 for MorphOS in May, this version is now also available for AmigaOS 3 (direct download, 134 KB). Changes:
  • Behavior: When ADiffView opens its own screen it is now a public screen named ADIFFVIEW.1. This number is incremented for each instance. The name of the screen where ADiffView is actually running is displayed in the About requester.
  • Behavior: On AmigaOS 3.1.4 and newer when ADiffView opens its own screen the new off-screen dragging mode is enabled. This allows windows to be dragged beyond the screen borders.
  • Behavior: Added (ToolType / CLI) argument EDITORONPUBSCREEN. When this is set and the editor (see EDITOR argument) supports a PUBSCREEN argument it will be opened on the ADiffView screen. The default editor C:Ed doest't support it, but OS3.1.4+ Tools/TextEdit does.
  • Behavior: The editor is now started asynchronously.
  • Fixed user interface and selection glitches that occurred when different screen or window title bar heights were set in OS3.1.4.+ Prefs/IControl.
  • Built with the OS3.2 NDK.

PED81C: Pseudo chunky screens on AGA Amigas (Update)
The Amiga's bitplane-based graphics, in which the color information for each pixel on a screen is captured as two-dimensional layers and, for scrolling, each layer (bitplane) is changed by the exact same value so that each pixel also gets the same color again, is memory-efficient but slow for individual changes and, with the advent of 3D graphics and fast memory on graphics cards, has fallen behind the chunky display of PCs and Macs.

With PED81C ("Pixel Elements Dots, 81 Colors") by Simone 'saimo' Bevilacqua there is an approach described in detail in the documentation in the archive at the title link to work on AGA Amigas with pseudo-native chunky screens without performing the known chunky-to-planar conversions when displaying 3D graphics or any other slowing down additional calculations by CPU or custom chips (Copper, Blitter) at all.

Videos at the title link demonstrate the effects made possible by the fact that chunky-like each dot on the screen is defined by its own byte in Chip RAM. Among the examples included there is also one showing how to use a PED81C display in AMOS programs.

Update: (09:22, 25.06.23, snx)
Mistake corrected regarding bitplane scrolling. (snx)

Mod-Player: HippoPlayer 2.58
Kari-Pekka Koljonen, the developer of the Amiga-MOD players HippoPlayer, has released an update to version 2.58. Changes:

Fixes:
  • Starting with command line "HiP " or with a "Startup" playlist and with random play mode always played the first entry, not a random entry, fixed this.
  • Fix search view sometimes not showing the last two list items.
  • Increased the maximum width of the window, so it can be resized wider than before.
  • Loading with "XFDmaster library" was fixed already in the previous version but I forgot to mention it in the last changelist.
  • PlaySid on kickstart 1.3: playing PSIDs on kick 1.3 could crash previously. There is now a fixed kick 1.3 specific playsid.library included, which is the latest official original version with some kick 1.3 specific fixes. Use the other included library for newer kickstarts.
  • AHI: Improved SBLive compatibility when stopping playback.
New features:
  • A new prefs option "Prefs/Play-1/Position slider" enables a slider in the main window which can be used to select the playing position. This works for the most common module types supporting pattern skipping. It also enables seeking locally played MP3 files.
  • Updated 8bitbubsy's xmaplay060 from version v0.41 to v0.46.

Module player: NostalgicPlayer 2.0.1 for Windows
NostalgicPlayer is a program for playing Amiga music modules under Windows, based on APlayer. The development of the player had been started by the author Thomas Neumann in 1993 on the Amiga, later continued on BeOS and now on Windows (amiga-news.de reported).

Version 2.0.1 mainly fixes bugs of the previous version:
  • Made Future Composer player more robust for empty modules.
  • If you have set up Windows to use more than 2 channels, NostalgicPlayer crashed when trying to play a module. Big thanks to Robert Konrad (RobDangerous) for the fix.
  • If the very first line is selected in the module list, then the page-down key didn't work.
  • In some rare situations the Piano visualizer crashes when fast-forwarding with an invalid argument error.
  • Some mp3 files was not recognized as so.
  • Fixed different bugs when double-clicking a file to open it in NostalgicPlayer.
An installation package can be found on Microsoft Store. (dr)

SMB2 handler smb2fs V53.7 for AmigaOS 3/4 and AROS
The Server Message Block (SMB) is a network protocol for file, print and other server services in computer networks and allows access to files and directories located on another computer (Wikipedia entry). Fredrik Wikstrom's SMB2 handler is based on libsmb2 and allows remote access to files via the SMB2/3 protocols (amiga-news.de reported). Changes of version 53.7:
  • Merged latest changes from libsmb2 git repository.
  • AmigaOS 3 version now uses ReqTools for the password requester.
  • Now uses an empty string instead of a NULL pointer when connecting to a share without a password.
  • AROS version no longer gets SysBase by reading it from AbsExecBase.
  • AROS version: Replaced fcntl() and close() calls with IoctlSocket() and CloseSocket().
Requirements: newlib.library V53.40 or later (or V53.30 as included in AmigaOS 4.1 FE) and the filesysbox.library V54.4 or later for AmigaOS 4, filesysbox.library 54.3 or later for AROS and AmigaOS 3 and optional the requester.class (ClassAct/ReAction, for password requester) for AmigaOS 3.

For all three operating systems there is a GUI on Aminet for creating a DOSDriver.

Lorence Lombardo (ANF)

Compression of executable files: Body Guard Packer 5.6
Lorence Lombardo's "bgpk" is a 68k executable file packer which, according to the developer, makes it possible to protect programs, improve compatibility with programs intended for a Unix-like operating system, and use some of the latest compression technologies.

The program requires AmigaOS 2.x. On systems with a version 1.3 Kickstart ROM, execution of programs packed in this way is prevented, so crashes are avoided. As a further difference to other packers for executable files, programs compiled with vbcc, for example, could also be compressed. In addition, bgpk does not perform hunk sorting or stripping, so that files packed with it are restored to their original state after unpacking. (snx)

AmigaOS 4: Current hardware availability
After ACube Systems recently delivered the last boards to pre-orderers, including shops (amiga-news.de reported), we asked the relevant Amiga shops if they had them on sale:

Alinea Computer offers a Sam460LE complete system for 1299 euros (plus shipping) with the following specifications:
  • Sam460LE board
  • Uboot
  • Cover
  • AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition included (OEM licence)
  • Kingston KVR667D2S5/2G DDR2 memory 2GB quality memory
  • Fractal Design Core 1000 Tower
  • High quality 550 Watt power supply with cable management
  • 4port SATA PCI controller
  • 240GB SanDisk SSD hard drive
  • DVD burner
  • Radeon HD 77xx 2 GB Gfx board
  • Soundblaster Live Audigy FX
As the item can only be ordered against prepayment, there is no direct purchase link in the shop, but must be ordered by enquiry. AmigaOne X5000 are currently not in stock.

For 1269 euro, but in the meantime sold out, Amedia Computer France had the Sam460LE on offer as a complete system. As the maintainers informed us, however, these will be available again during the next week and can thus be ordered:
  • a little Micro ATX slim case,
  • the Sam460LE 1,10GHz motherboard,
  • 1GB memory module,
  • 1x 240GB SSD 2.5 harddisk,
  • 1x Radeon HD5450 2GB graphic's card,
  • 1x Audio PCI Express card,
  • 1x PCI Sata card,
  • the AmigaOS 4.1 software.
As a specialist in assembling computers, other special configurations with many tower, Ram, hard disk, graphics card, sound card and Sata card variants can also be ordered on request. Amedia Computer France also continues to offer the AmigaOne X5000/40, which can be ordered on request. When ordering a complete system, an AmigaOS 4 game and a recovery USB stick are included free of charge.
Amedia Computer France is not only maintaining an online but two physical shops as well which are located in France, in Courcelles-Chaussy, and in Luxembourg, in Differdange, where they also sell AmigaOne X5040 towers.

ACube Systems itself does not offer a complete system, but the pure Sam460LE board for around 963 euros.

As the maintainer of the RELEC shop told us, he is in the process of restructuring his shop. He is currently working on offering new items for the Amiga, among others a new design for the X5000, called "the red D", a desktop case. Sam460 boards are also to be offered. We will report when this will be the case.

The American shop Amiga On The Lake does not currently offer any PPC systems. (dr)

Preview video: Action puzzle game "Old Towers"
Already in 2020, "Amiga Retro Development" had begun to port the action puzzle game Old Towers from the Sega Mega Drive to the Amiga. The aim of the game is to dash across walls and ceilings, collecting all the coins and finding the way to the exit, past treacherous dangers and traps. The port is written in assembler and uses 32 colours. The code is almost written, the music is in progress. However, a graphic artist is still needed to take care of the level design and graphics. Anyone who wants to help, will find an e-mail address in the accompanying text of the video. If the work is completed successfully, an AGA version is planned for the future. (dr)

The "Amos Anim Player" of the group "ELECTRIC BLACK SHEEP" is a very simple IFF-ANIM player that runs on any Amiga. It can play compressed IFF-Anim formats synchronised with a separate IFF Audio Sample (or MOD) (amiga-news.de reported).
In the current version there are now two different player variants: AnimPlayerMovie aims at 25 FPS and neglects information within the chunk, while AnimPlayerProper tries to consider as much information as possible (colour changes, sound names within the file etc). The Reducer is a stand-alone programme to reduce the data size between consecutive frames. (dr)

Background: Influence of the cache on PowerPC CPU (Czech)
Martina Hřebcová is known for her extensive and detailed reports on PowerPC hardware. This time she looks at how big the influence of cache is on the speed of PowerPC CPUs, here in particular the G3 to G5 processors. The starting point for the article was her research on how she could best upgrade her Powermac G4 1.42. She came across a post in the Macrumors forum by user 'Ervus' who had found out that the G4 7457 / 1.6 GHz with a 2 MB L3 cache is faster than the G4 7447 / 2.0 GHz without the L3 cache. Inspired by this, she looked at the other processors and their cache and wrote this article. (dr)

Sami Vehmaa - among other things, start bar QDock or maze game Cube - has started a new game project: "The Oregon Trail" (YouTube video of a live presentation) is set in 1847 and is a text-based adventure game. The chosen game character (banker, carpenter or farmer) determines the level of difficulty of the game, which ends when the travel group is eliminated or one has reached Oregon. An Amiga (or Amiga emulator) with a graphics card (960 x 540 in windowed mode) and 30 MB free RAM are required. (dr)

Developer diary: "Settle the World" 06/23
Christian 'TheoTheoderich' Wiegel continues to work on his turn-based building and trading game "Settle the World" (amiga-news.de reported). His latest developer diary entry is about the implementation of an election system and a hapiness system:

"I started a large restructuring of the game. The goal is to include elections and a better happiness system. This is a lot of work that will take many weeks.

At the moment, the game is far too easy and offers no challenge. Computer opponents and natives will be a challenge later on....but there is still a long way to go.

Before that, an election system will be built in. If the player loses an election, the game is over for him. To achieve this, the needs system of the inhabitants and their happiness must be reworked.

The first thing to be done is the happiness/needs display, which has been completely rewritten. It looks almost the same as before, but works a little differently.

In the future, higher classes of inhabitants will need more and different food. This is where farms and grapes come into play.

Grapes are a pure bonus resource, similar to gold. Wine can only be harvested on these bonus squares, not on other squares. Farms are needed to harvest and process grapes.

Farms function like small towns, but without citizens and their needs. Grapes can later be processed into wine here. Wine is a luxury good for the aristocratic class and increases their happiness, which is an advantage later in the elections.

But farms should not only be able to process grapes, they should also produce meat. Meat is additional food for the aristocratic class as well. Cattle should be able to be kept on a farm and processed into meat by a butcher.

Unlike wine, however, meat does not increase the aristocrats' happiness, but is a basic requirement. So that all this can be produced, there will probably be four new units in the game:
  • Cowboy, for cattle breeding on a farm
  • Butcher, processes cattle into meat
  • Grape picker, harvests grapes from the corresponding bonus fields
  • Winegrower, processes grapes into wine
The whole thing is not yet fully thought out and tested. The farms are still a work in progress....but things are moving forward." (dr)

Music tips for the weekend
If you want to start the weekend with relaxed house music, Jonas Faupel's Jungle Cut, which he created on an Amiga 500, is recommended.

If you need some "driving" music for vacuuming, for example, you can throw in the latest remixx by 'D4XX', who this time has taken on Marusha's "Raveland". (dr)

Module player: NostalgicPlayer 2.0.0 for Windows
NostalgicPlayer is a program for playing Amiga music modules under Windows, based on APlayer. The development of the player had been started by the author Thomas Neumann in 1993 on the Amiga, later continued on BeOS and now on Windows (amiga-news.de reported).

Version 2.0.0 includes the following changes:
  • Updated to .NET 7.
  • Updated SharpCompress to version 0.33.0.
  • The different players return a list of frequencies for each note. This is used by the Piano visual to show which note is playing. Each player support different number of octaves, and before, they was centered in the middle of the piano. This has been changed, so the same note (same frequency) is shown on the same key for every players.
  • Added tool tip in the Module Information window for Module format and active player. The tool tips show the description of the format/player.
  • Fixed a bug, which made some MED modules that contains multiple octave samples fail to load.
  • Improved the AHX player to use channel mode instead of its own mixer. This makes the Piano and Spinning Square visualizers to work with these modules.
  • Made a big change on how the song position is shown and navigated. Before, the position reflects the players position list and which position in this list is currently being played. This may cause some confusion, specially with players which has position loops like SoundMon and DigiBooster. This has now been changed, so the position reflects the time into the song. Each position is a 3 seconds step. This means, when moving the slider or pushing the rewind/forward buttons, you move in time and not the position list. To not remove the old information, it has been moved into the module information window. This has also been expanded with currently playing pattern/tracks.
  • Written my own control to handle the module list in main window. This make all the operations on the list a lot faster than before, special with big lists.
  • Now there won't be created an extra process for every file you double click on in File Explorer to add them into the module list. This fix also speed up the processing of the files, so they are added faster.
  • When adding a lot of files to the module list at once, e.g. the whole modland archive, it did take a loooooong time to process. This has been speeded up a lot, so all the in-deep scanning is done in a background thread if enabled in the settings.
  • Added new option to remove files from the module list which cannot be recognized.
  • Ported mpg123 to C# to get rid of the CPU dependencies. In the process, I also added support for the Free Format (rarely used, find examples on my webpage).
  • Fixed a bug that may cause the program to hang when closing down and a double-buffering module has been loaded.
  • Restricted the module length for 15-samples mod files to prevent false positives. Unfortunally, this change make a couple of modules on modland undetectable because they have a lot of extra data at the end. I have fixed those modules on my webpage, so if you find such modules, try to see if you can find the fixed version there.
  • Added support for ARM processors.
  • Updated libsidplayfp to version 2.5.0.
  • Renamed the MED format to MED 2.10 (MMD0).
  • Added these new module formats: DigiBooster Pro 2.x (with support of echo), DigiBooster 3.x, DigiBooster 1.x (with support of "robot" effect), MED 1.12, MED 2.00, MED 2.10 (MED4), David Whittaker.
An installation package can be found on Microsoft Store. (dr)

Videoplayer: Amos Anim Player V2023.06.08
The "Amos Anim Player" of the group "ELECTRIC BLACK SHEEP" is a very simple IFF-ANIM player that runs on any Amiga. It can play compressed IFF-Anim formats synchronised with a separate IFF Audio Sample (or MOD) (amiga-news.de reported).
To reduce the amount of data to be processed, and because the animation could crash if the decoded animframe exceeded 40Kb, an Amos programme was included that creates a new image sequence from a given source, reducing the movement between consecutive frames in a scaleable way, as the visual needs of the animation. This can save a lot of data with a relatively small loss of quality. The sample animations can be found under the name ".Reduced".

As the developer continues, Ham6 is neither easy to handle nor designed for this kind of manipulation, which is why one must expect visual errors. The visual result would remind on DIVX videos from the past. (dr)

Floppy disk images on PC and Mac: Greaseweazle Tools 1.13
Keir Fraser's "Greaseweazle" does - similar to Kryoflux - read the magnetic information on a floppy disk independently from the format used and saves as much information as possible to generate a so-called "Flux Level Image" in Supercard format (SCP), which enables reading and back-writing of copy-protected disks (amiga-news.de reported)

The adapter gets connected between a floppy disk drive - e.g. a standard 3.5" PC one - and a USB port of the PC or Mac. Version 1.13 of the Greaseweazle Tools provide the following changes:
  • Generate a x64 Windows build in addition to x32
  • New disk formats:
  • Generic IBM track scanner: ibm.scan
  • General Music: gem.1600
  • TRS CoCo OS-9, MM/1 OS-9: coco.os9.*, mm1.os9.*
  • Commodore 1571 (C64) GCR: commodore.1571
  • New image formats:
    • D71: C64 CBMDOS GCR 1571 double-sided disk
    • TD0: IBM sector format (Read only)
    • EDSK: Support writing new EDSK images (gw read --format=ibm.scan my.edsk)
  • gw read/write: New option --dd to set interface pin 2 for 5.25" drives
  • C64: New low-pass filter PLL stage to clean up noisy flux images
    • Can also be used more generally via a new sub-option to "--pll"
