CES: Interview with TAO's CEO Francis Charig
As already reported, Christoph Dietz flew to Las Vegas for amiga-news.de to attend and report directly from the CES. Here's the interview he had with the CEO of TAO, the software partner of Amiga Inc.:

Francis Charig (Chairman TAO)

Francis Charig (Chairman TAO)
Patrice Haftmann (Chairman/CEO Infomedia)
J.D. Ray (Präsident/COO Infomedia)

Amiga-News: Good morning Francis and thank you for the opportunity of this interview.

Francis Charig: It's a pleasure for me either!

Amiga-News: Let's start with some basic questions. How old are you and where are you born?

Francis Charig: Unfortunately I'm 40 years old. I was born in Oxted by London.

Amiga-News: Sure you are married and have children?

Francis Charig: Yes, my wife is Japanese and we have two boys. One is six and the other will be three in February.

Amiga-News: When and where was TAO (pronounced: DAO) founded?

Francis Charig: TAO was founded in 1992 in Bracknell nearby Reading, England. Until 1995 it was a virtual company, located in a bedroom.

Amiga-News: How many people are working for TAO?

Francis Charig: About 70 people. More then 50 of them are in the software department. They are coming from three major groups: the Video games industry, the Blue Chip Industry and we selected the best directly from the universities, Stanford for example.

Amiga-News: What's your position at TAO?

Francis Charig: I'm the chairman of TAO. TAO is not a public company. Sony and Motorola together own 30% of TAO. If TAO would be a public company, its market value would be about $100.000.000. Nowadays Amiga Inc. is our most important partner.

Amiga-News: Do you remember your greatest success?

Francis Charig: Of course, it was to bring this exiting engineering team together. These people are incredible. We only had a fluctuation of two people in the last 2 1/2 years.

Amiga-News: What was the worst day in TAO's history?

Francis Charig: [Thinks long] it was to loose business with our investor from the blue chip industry in 1995 while we had no customers.

Amiga-News: When did you had "First contact" with Bill McEwen?

Francis Charig: It was in October 1999. We introduced him to investors after he decided to use our software for the new Amiga. In fact: TAO saved Amiga.

Amiga-News: Are you familiar with Amiga's history?

Francis Charig: Yes, I know about it all. I know about Commodore, Escom, VisCorp, Gateway and all these things. I still have my Amiga, but unfortunately it's standing in the attic. Also my nephew used the Amiga. I loved gaming on it, e.g. BrakeOut.

Amiga-News: Can you describe the new OS with only three words?

Francis Charig: Consumer Multimedia Stack

Amiga-News: When will the new Amiga-OS be ready, in Q3/2001?

Francis Charig: Of course not! Someone in the next half year!

Amiga-News: We are just a few days in the New Year. Do you have a wish for this year?

Francis Charig: *Joking* Retirement. No, I wish that TAO would be successful in all of the key markets.

Amiga-News: Is the existing Amiga community important for you?

Francis Charig: Yes. The Amiga community provides ones of the best engineers and artist. There is more multimedia skill in the Amiga community than in the PC-World. But there is a discussion if memory protection is needed or not. I want to explain TAO's point of view. For what is memory protection needed? To prevent bad programmed software from crashing the computer. That means that it leads into bad programming. But the software for AmigaDE will run on your desktop but also on your mobile or in your car. Mobiles for example don't have memory protection. Are they crashing? No, the software for them is well programmed. If we add memory protection we have to have a very, very good reason. Because it slows down the operating system. Our goal is to deliver the best multimedia-operating stack. This also means speed!

Amiga-News: Some words to the community?

Francis Charig: We can make Amiga great together. To be great we have to lead the world. Amiga is delivering the best content to the mass market. If we always remember that, we can achieve.

Amiga-News: Thank you for this interview and have a successful stay at the CES.

Francis Charig: It was a pleasure to me. Thank you!

Heise: CES: The Computer Sector Deals in Entertainment Electronics
«On Saturday at 19 o'clock MET the Consumer Electronic Show (CES), the world's biggest annual entertainment electronics fair is opening its doors in Las Vegas. One and a half hour before, Bill Gates will hold his keynote, which he will - as known by now - change on the birth hour of his new favourite, the game console XBox.

Though this will be no more surprise to anybody, but there are a lot more things to discover at the CES: After all there are 1800 exhibitors at the start this year and in addition to this there is a "frame program" at the fair with over 100 presentations with about 300 experts. 110.000 visitors are expected from over 100 countries. The fair was first held back 1967 with some modest 200 exhibitors and 17.500 visitors.»

Christoph Dietz of amiga-news.de has flown to Las Vegas to report to our readers from the fair and to cover us with pictures. In addition he has arranged for some interesting interviews. You can expect interesting news.

The new forum is based on the Yet Another Bulletin Board' in short 'YaBB' and is offering every imaginable comfort. The forum will now be tested for some weeks and later on we will decide whether we stick to the system or remove it. The design is only partly adapted to out page. It will change during testing. To participate you need to register during which you can choose an appearance for yourself. If you wish so, your data will be stored in Cookies, so you will register automatically on your next visit. The new forum is really fun. We would be happy to find as many participants as possible. We will the create more special forums on request.»

Dear reader,

we have finished our move to the new server and if everything works as we expect, you can now see the scripts programmed by Sven Drieling in action on our German page.

The main change is that the entire news are now administrated in a database, you can comment on every single news and can send individual news to friends by e-mail. Also, you can view a printing and an ASCII version. If you prefer to see the start page with titles only, you can control this with the menu above.

We are looking forward to your comments. Write us what you like and what we could still improve.

Corinna Cohn. Interviewed Bill McEwen
Corinna Cohn. called up Bill McEwen, to clear up some rumors as much as possible. McEwen answered her some questions. Here a summary of what Bill McEwen answered:
  • AmigaOS 3.9 has upgraded Internet functionality that was missing from 3.5, and it has multimedia players. Otherwise, most of the functionality is similar to 3.5. Users will have to evaluate the features of 3.9 for themselves to see if there's any value added.
  • The last months were tight for Amiga Inc. from a financial point of view. They are looking for more investors. McEwen named several sources, among them a tier one company that would be interested in investing.
  • Bill McEwen is sure to have a product that hopefully impresses investors more than some of the ephemeral properties that other startups failed to sell.
  • Money is low. Will Amiga Inc. become insolvent? McEwen replied to this question that this is not true.
  • Amiga Inc. will only exhibit at Amiga trade shows. Products will be made available through vendors.
  • Bill McEwen named some manufacturers of set-top boxes which should be available soon. He is excited about other products appearing, especially something that should please Amiga users.
  • He reiterated that they (this being vendors using Amiga technology) had some products ready to debut and that we should stick around to see them.
Corinna Cohn. analyzes Bill McEwens statements as follows:
"Amiga does not have a product that I as an Amiga user would necessarily want, but that I as a computer geek might dig. We Amiga users are a technological launching platform for a new, possibly cool technology, and Amiga wants us to continue to pay attention to them until its ready. This explains 3.5 and 3.9, and it explains the early appearance of the developers kit. Amiga is going to continue to blow us kisses until they have something to impress us with or until they run out of money."

The computer industry is in an extremely hard competition. Even if it may be difficult for us at times not to lose our faith that Amiga Inc. will achieve what they have planned. It is worth acknowledging that they are obviously not willed to throw in the towel even though it would be easier and more promising to develop tools for another famous OS ...

Music: Psyria
Dennis Lohr 'Psyria' has been making music as a hobby for six years. he started with an A500 and Protracker 2.3a. Currently, he still creates his music mainly on the Amiga, but he uses the Digibooster today. He expresses his enthusiasm about the Digibooster like this: "For all Amigans who make music as well: have a look at that thing! There probably is no better tracker for the Amiga!"

Many of his songs (trance, techno, dancefloor, and pop) are available for download on his website at the title link. The website was entirely reworked lately.

VirusHelp Denmark: Update of xvs.library
Yesterday, an update to the xvs.library was released which can recognize the trojans "4kIntro Trojan" and Dkg-Blum Trojan. If you're using VirusChecker, VirusExecutor or VirusZ, make sure to update the library.
Some information on the release:

Name...: xvs.library v33.24
Archive name: xvslibrary.lha
Archiv size: 52.734 Bytes
Date: January 4th, 2001
Programmer: Alex van Niel

News for 33.24:
- 4kIntro Trojan added
Thanks to Ryben Kozlak and Jan Andersen
- Dkg-Blum Trojan added
Thanks to Peter Gordon, Urban Müller and Jan Andersen

NOTE:
This trojan also replaces/deletes or adds a file called asi.library XVS will not (yet) be able to detect this file because as far as I could analyze it, it looked like a normal VideoTracker file. If XVS would have to see this as a virus, more VideoTracker files will be fake detected. If you have problems or want this added anyway let me know.

STILL TO DO: - Add Neurotic Death 2 and Neurotic Death 4. These two linkviruses are polymorphic, but crash on my system if I try to infect some test files. It seems that they haven't been spread to the public, I received them anonymously from the author. So it's not that BIG danger at the moment. - Try to get and add GlobVec linkvirus. The only one who has it is Heiner Schneegold (author of VT-Schutz) and VTC Hamburg, but Heiner doesn't give his permission to the VTC to send me the virus :(

AmiBench News
Mark 'tecno' Wilson, the maintainer of AmiBench, the website for international free small ads, reports in his year summary about the adverse conditions capable to make a webmaster's life really hard, sometimes. AmiBench was hunted by bad luck last year: scripts which weren't finished; the service provider got hacked; the server played yoyo; the web account was closed by mistake; no feedback from the readers; ....

I can comprehend well that such conditions are very annoying and motivation goes to zero sometimes. Give Mark positive feedback to give his motivation a boost. :)

The Not-So-Serious Inside Story Announcement
Crack-off, 31 December 2000

The pi-pi-Castro Task Force is proud to promote the latest technique of advertising.

The pi-pi Castro Task Force hereby authorise everybody to read the secrets of their latest technology of collecting money in advertising and to disclose this secret to enyone on the way:
  • We, the world-famous pi-pi Castro Task Force, produced the world-famous graphic system for the world-dominant computer platform of the Ah-miga. Sure, we did some work. Nobody paid us for that :-(
  • Then we saw some people get big in the Ah-miga world.
  • We thought: "Why don't take money from them?"
  • We noticed Err-box produced their hardware (el mediatore).
  • Err-box produced their software (the pi-pi driver).
  • We did not help them (why should we?)
  • So we thought we could ask Err-box for money for using our world-famous name of pi-pi 96
  • Therefore we are world famous. Proved.
  • Err-box did not want to pay us.
  • We asked other friends to persuade Err-box.
  • Franco Mariacchi managed to get computers and Special-Delusion-Kit documents from Err-box - FOR FREE!!! Success!!!
  • Hi-period managed to get some hardware from Err-box plus the same paperwork. FOR FREE!!! Success!!!
  • We did not manage to get a single pfenig from Err-box. And we need paper too.
  • Franco Mariacchi and Hi-period are laughing at us.
  • Therefore we are suckers. And our friends are laughing at us. Proved.
  • Aha. A painting family wants us to pay DM 6,000 for using the "Pi-pi-Castro" name.
  • Therefore we wanted Err-box to pay it for us.
  • As Err-box are discussing the issue behind the curtain, and we need cash badly, we demand Ah-miga users to register our pi-pi system immediately and pay us for their being happy.
  • If nobody pays us, we will cry out that any other soap-ware worldwide is ill-egg-all. (Apart from our pi-pi-castro, sure enough.) Proved.

Err-box Komm-puter was happy to find the appropriate name for this new method of advertising: the REVERSE ADVERTISING. Danke mucho, err-boxie.

Please remember that you have to pay us DEM 5.00 or USD 10.00 every time you use the word "advertising".

The Pi-Pi-Castro Task Force

================

There is a popular custom in Poland to make jokes on colleagues and fellow people in the end of the year, to summarise the most prevalent features of their behaviour during the year. Here is our summary of what has transpired between the P96 team and ELBOX Computer during that time. Please take it with a bit of reserve, as we do not intend to offend anyone, just to introduce a pinch of humour into the issue, which seemed to be so tense and serious in the Amiga world.

Happy New Year!!!

Payback Status Report #17
On 30. December 2000 James Daniels has released the status report #17 regarding the game 'Payback'. The game now offers additionally a multiplayer deathmatch mode for up to 4 players. To do this much had to be changed in the source code and therefor much work had to be put into this mode as the game wasn't design for supporting a multiplayer mode first. But the work was, according to James Daniels, worth it. Screens of the multiplayer mode are released on the screenshots page. The latest photos there also contain the improved textures.

Besides that the game now supports also the CD32 controller, and several bugs have been fixed.

Hans-Joerg Frieden in the Forum

Warp3D and PCI Graphics Boards
Recently Hans-Jörg Frieden has expressed himself in our forum regarding the topic driver software for PCI graphics boards under Warp3D:

«Unfortunately the number of e-mails regarding Warp3D and PCI cards accumulates for Thomas and me. Almost every time it is "I have purchased a card of the brand XXX, when will you have 3D drivers ready?"...

Regarding this I want to say the following: Warp3D is and will continue to be a hobby project that is cooking on smaller flame as for now, because of the time consumption of Hyperion. If possible we'll write drivers. Nevertheless I will explicitly point out, that the buying of a graphics card is no cogent reason for us to produce a driver for it - as that takes quite some time. There will probably be no driver for Voodoo 5 (V4 is questionable but more likely), none for GeForce, Riva TNT, ATI Rage or whatever else, especially when there exists no chip documentation. Neither we will attempt to recycle a Linux driver.

In the case that somebody could get some chip documentation (legal!) and make it available for us the chances for a driver increase but this is no guarantee either.»

Via email Hans-Joerg adds that this is no kind of arbitrariness but only a hint that people shouldn't waste their money for graphics cards that can't be supported simply because of the lack of time or documentation...

We are getting mails all the time from people asking for GeForce support or Voodoo 5 but for those documentation isn't accessible. We have tried it even at NVidia, without success, even not against NDA... :-(

COOLbits Newsticker
We wish a happy new year to all of our customers!

Our shop will be closed until 07.01.2001.

Martin Strobl writes:
I have build the Elbox-Mediator PCI Board into my showroom tower and I am very pleased with the VooDoo 3000/16MB graphicsboard I also build in, since this duo is faster than my private CybervisionPPC. (showroom tower: Blizzard 1260, Private: CyberstormPPC 233/060/50).

A question concerning this subject: Is there interest to buy the Mediator-PCI Board/ PCI graphics board directly with a licensed version of the Picasso96 drivers? If you are interested please send an email to martin@coolbits.de. If there is enough interest I will contact the makers of the drivers to ask for the price of such a deal.

By the way, here is a tip for all those who own EXODUS in combination with a CybervsionPPC (maybe also other graphics boards:
The game ran extremely slow on my computer until I removed the program "PREPAREMUL" of Shapeshifter from my startup-sequence.

Amiga Sound Standards and How to Destroy Them (Part 1)
Joern Plewka wrote:
In the past Katodev had to fight the fact that internally there wasn't enough menpower available. That's why it was impossible for us to participate in certain discussions. The things that head towards us now (criticism about AMPlifier) is from our point of view hard and "generated".

Katodev and others are trying to support all of the existing standards those usable from concept. We'd like to point out that the mpeg.device has been released 1993 by Commodore (picture and sound). All cards with hardware MPEG-support that were released after that have used this driver. CD32-FMV, Peggy+, Melody-Z2, Melody1200 series and also the Delfina series. For the later even the source code is available on Aminet. Those who are now still not capable of writing a correct driver for their hardware should simply ask for help or make their hardware layout available for everyone!

AMPlifier supports this standard. Those who create a driver for their hardware can use this software unlicensed. AMPlifier is part of OS3.9 or available on our homepage (unrestricted shareware) in Rev. 2.21. Those who don't like the software should write their own, but please support the standards!

Silversurfer does NOT Work with Melody1200
Joern Plewka wrote:
Since the Cologne fair previous to this year's fair the Silversurfer in it's original state doesn't work correctly with Melody1200 since the complete clockport is blocked, which is in contradiction with what the manufacturer states at his homepage. This information isn't even available to users when they ask for support. Katodev is fed up with fixing Silversurfers without complaining, by now. Currently it seems that even the software does NOT work with Melody1200 anymore.

If Silversurfer and Melody1200 can't work together simultaneoulsy it means that Melody can die from bus-collisions, sooner or later. Please get a guaranty on purchase that Silversurfer does the things you require or use Twister1200. This makes you preventing a lot of anger, port and time for you and us.

We have reconstructed the layout of the Silversurfer now. This shows that the IRQ runs over a diode. Those having problems due to this "trick" should replace the diode by a transistor (e.g. BS170).

VirusHelp Denmark: New Informationen on New Trojan
I have received some new info about the new trojan that was found on the 27'th of December. It is spread in an archive with the name "dcs-4k.lha". But the demo group have nothing to do with this new trojan. We have also been told that it is a guy from England and that he also made the "dkg-blum.lha" trojan, his name and address is known to Virus Help Denmmark. Thanks to Mikko for the new info.

Here once more the full information on the new archive (we had posted these on 12/27/2000 already):

Today we received a new 'lame' trojan. This trojan will delete your "sys:" if you run the program. At this time non of the anti-virus programs can detect this trojan, but in the next update they will be known.

The cure right now (If you have lost your SYS: to bad......), then you will have to try and get the files back with eg. DiskSalv, AB-Tools or VT-Schutz.

Here is some info about the infected archive:

Virus Type.... : Trojan
Trojan name....: 4KIntro.exe
Trojan size....: 4096 bytes (packed with StoneCracker 4.04)
: 6072 bytes (un-packed)
Archive name.. : dcs-4k.lha
Archive size.. : ? (Not known yet)

This archive has been send to all the antivirus programers.....

Thanx to Ryben Kozlak for the info and sending the archive to us..

Visitor #2,000,000 on amiga-news.de
Last night, the 2,000,000th visitor came to our website. Joe has sent us a screenshot of the 'event'. A proud number for 27 months. This turns out about 74,074 visitors per month, with rising tendency. Currently, between 6,000 and 8,000 readers visit us per day!

This is the opportunity to thank you for this great acceptance. We are very happy, especially about the fact that more and more programmers, developers, and readers take the chance to enter news in our Amiga News Forum (ANF) themselves.

Picasso96 Driver for Mediator
Sufficient demand for Picasso96 drivers for Mediator provided, that is about 300 registered users (specify Mediator for purpose when registering), in case of need we will purchase a complete developer- and test-system with our own funds, and then create own drivers for diverse PCI graphics boards. This drivers will then be of quality known form us.

But Elbox mentioned to us that they already would have shipped two systems to Germany for other driver development (CGX). Well, it would be in our terms to provide us one of these. To charge UPS with delivery cannot cost the world.....

Another problem would be accessing the API of the Mediator system's pci.library. Elbox provides this only for NDA, though they don't feel themselves to be bound to such concinnities, see their unauthorized Voodoo3-P96 driver...
If they would refuse us to access this, of course this would raise a certain problem which could lead to slightly delays.

Supplement 12-29-2000:
Tobias Abt via eMail:
Afterwards we got the information that this developer system provided to the CGX team was distributed by Vesalia, but financed by Elbox.

FBlit v3.73xms
It was published a new test version of FBlit v3.73xms on 22nd of December 2000. FBlit patches some OS functions normally using the blitter, such that these can use the CPU and don't have to operate inside chip-mem.

The patched functions are also faster and non-interleaved data will suffer less from colour flickering .

Additionally non-displayalbe bitmaps can be put in fastram for named tasks. The new version contains various minor changes to v3.69b.

And Max Rally does Work..... ;)
Do you also have the game Max Rally from Aminet Games, Aminet Set 10 or Aminet 36, and it just doesn't work? Here is the solution: On the above mentioned CD-Roms explode.library is missing! This can be downloaded e.g. from Aminet (util/libs/explode-7.lha) and unpacked to your own libs directory. Good playing.

VMC would like to wish all of their customers a merry Christmas (the whole thing is available at the title link).

VMC-ISDN 2.99B100 Christmas update released
Attention! This is a commercial update. All features are available without a VMC-ISDN-license but the connection time is limited.

We will make a special offer to the owners of the original ISDN-Blaster-Z2. The following changes were made:

Speed-up of the interrupt-system witch made the whole thing a lot more stable. Problems with FUSION were removed and things like vlink.device are no longer necessary.

At the moment we are working on the next generation of VMC-ISDN. We will build in some interesting features like message transport over the D-channel and much more.
There are some screenshots of the new X-Phone version available at our VMC-ISDN product page.

HyperCOM 2.98 Christmas update
The new last non-commercial update for HyperCOM are available now. Two minor problems were fixed and the speed were increased.

AmigAIM BETA Version 0.9405 Released
As a Christmas Present - sort of, anyway...

The latest version has been uploaded to the normal locations, on the webpage and descriptions on the links section of the mailing list have been changed.

Extract from History of AmigAIM since Public Release...

History of AmigAIM since Public Release...
AmigAIM 0.9405 Beta (25 Dec 2000)
  • Added "Temporary" class of Buddy. If a message is received from someone not already on Buddy list, they are added to temporary status. If not moved from Temporary status to main list, Buddy is not saved when program is exited.
  • Colors for different types of messages in Message list added. (Incoming, Outgoing, Auto-Outgoing, Auto-Incoming, and System)
  • Prefs have capability of default color on Left or Right, or use of special colour on Left and Right for each Message.
  • Activity window now has the capability of having prefs set colors for display of status changes (Online,Offline and Away)
  • Single Window mode appears to work better now, as I have the window closed, changed than reopened after a change in prefs.
  • Issuing an ARexx command of QUIT FORCE now causes the client to close under most conditions without putting up any requesters (Even if prefs, etc haven't been saved)
  • Documentation in form of AmigaGuide document and MUIA_HelpNodes finally added to program, including documentation of part of ARexx interface.
  • Modified text input history system, now keeps history of last entry while cycling up/down through history. (Modification or reuse of old history entry will replace last entry)

XMas Edition of FormAldiHyd V1.2
today is XMas eve and therefore the day of presents. So quickly grab the new version 1.2 of FormAldiHyd from my homepage.

Changes:
  • V1.2 (24-Dec-00): (28860/13144 Bytes)
  • Released to my homepage and AmiNet.
  • Fixed the bugs with relative mouse movement (Cinema4D) and FlipX and/or FlipY enabled (thanks to Roger Petry for giving me the hint).
  • Reduced lower LMB Threshold limit from 13% to 1% on users request.
  • Added a second usable area slider for mouse only, so you can change between mouse and stylus on the fly and have a suitable acceleration for the mouse movements.
  • Range for the tablet was 1 pixel off set (minor flaw).
  • Iconify on startup did not work as stated in the manual (lazy me never tried it, sorry), so I added an option to iconify in the prefs.
  • Changed the GUI layout a little bit.
  • Added a FAQ to the guide.
  • Painted a nice MWB icon for FormAldiHyd. Does anyone want to design a NewIcon or GlowIcon?
  • Added a niffy logo to FormAldiHyd (sorry :) ).
  • Formalin now parses the ToolTypes and therefore can be started from Workbench without problems now.

Just a few minutes ago, Gerhard Müller sent an email to me, telling me that he has managed to get the Tablet working in conjunction with his MFCIII. Moreover, he has supplied me a patch that is included in this mail (thank you so much, Gerhard!). All users with MFCIII should try out this patch and see if it's any good and solves the problem.

So this will be the last update for this millennium. Enjoy your xmas holidays and happy new year! See you in 2001 :) And let's see who will notice a slight change in my geek code in a few days :-D

The Secret of Mount Monkey - a Canceled Devotee-Adventure
Sebastian Beloch wrote:
This project was started in 1998, but was canceled in the meantime. This demo version includes complete intro and parts of the first level (not playable). THE SECRET OF MOUT MONKEY is an adventure game in style of the old classic adventures by Lucas-Arts (e.g. Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Day of the Tentacle, ....). The game combines the characters of these games building a new adventure game.

Guybrush Threepwood's daughter accepts the bid of Simon The Sorcerer to save the world, and has to supply several ingredients for his magic potion. She travels to foreign islands (MONKEY ISLAND), visits the Maniac Manison (DAY OF THE TENTACLE), stumbles into the comic strip worlds of Sam & Max as well as Leisure Suit Larry...

The demo in graphics strongly abutes to the old adventure games and is a must for all those who loves adventures.

The demo and screenshots are to find at the project section "Software-Projekte" on http://www.sebel-interactive.de/.

Christmas Greetings and News from ANNEX
ANNEX wish all of you merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Contrary to some rumours the group would have parted I would like to tell, that we are still there. We are well and waiting for strating shot for us to come back with new songs, a new performance and hopefully a great come-back of the Amiga next year.

Publishing a track on the new OS 3.9 hopefully was a clear sign that we are NOT to leaving behind the Amiga, but rather we are waiting for the things to continue. OS 3.9 also was a noticeable sign for a generative co-operation happened, at last.

I wish all Amiga users and most of all the programmers merry Christmas and a happy new year. Thank you for everything. Daniel "NX_LOKI" Schulz

Makers of Exodus Taken In by Swindler
Fun Time World wrote:
«The makers of the game "Exodus - Tha Last War" apparently were taken by a swindler. Mariuz Samson (Exodus) voiced on this problem in an article on the homepage of the Polish magazine eXec. The person in question, whose name wasn't mentioned, has also been responsible for the server problems due to which it partly was very difficult to download the demo version from the page. Similar problems also happened with e-mails which didn't always arrive. For the alleged hacker attack also the person in question has been responsible. Unfortunately the swindler was also able to read the e-mails sent to the group and possibly answered some of those.

If you happened to receive an e-mail with a reply-to address different from the following, so this one might be sent by the person in question: samsonm@poczta.onet.pl, darexodus@poczta.onet.pl, sland@skrzynka.getin.pl, and maybe also slandsales@go2.pl. Now you can reach the group under the following e-mail address: samson10@box43.pl

Christmas and new year wishes from Stefan Robl
Under the above title link Stefan Robl (AmiDock, AmigaMPEGPlayer) does not only wish a merry Christmas and a happy new year, but also recalls his Amiga year 2000.

During his internship at Haage&Partner he developed the speed optimized ARexx interpreter "StormRexx" which but isn't finished, yet. For AmigaOS V3.9 he developed 'AmiDock', and for the AmigaSDK he released the MPEG player 'AmigaMPEGPlayer'. At the Neuss show he was able to present his "AmiCamedia" driver for digital cameras by Olympus.

iBrowse News
Middle of December on the support forum of iBrowse, which was hosted by www.senduptheflares.com/ and now doesn't exist no more it was to read that Stefan Burstroem, author of iBrowse has got a full time job, cause he wasn't able to exist from what he gains from iBrowse, any more.

Here the original message form the HiSoft forum:

«Unfortunately, after many, many years of hard work on iBrowse, Stefan Burstroem (the author of iBrowse) has been forced to get a full-time job. The revenues coming in from iBrowse sales simply are not enough to support worldwide marketing plus a salary for the author.

Although Stefan remains committed to iBrowse and the Amiga, it is difficult to see how he can take the product forward without help. And, even then, I cannot see how enough revenue will come to pay the people involved.

Please let me know if any of you have any ideas how this problem can be solved. David»

On the iBrowse product page at Hisoft (see title link) it is mentioned that it is absolute necessary to have a look at the demo version of iBrowse before registering, to be sure that the browser fulfils your needs. According to Hisoft so much changes have happened to the internet, that Amiga browser cannot keep up, any more.

Here the original text:

«The latest version of the Amiga's premier web browser.
Note that the Internet has moved on and the Amiga has not kept up, so some modern websites are not accessible on the Amiga because they require software that is not available for the Amiga. Therefore, before you purchase an iBrowse 2 keyfile please ensure that you have downloaded the evaluation version and satisfied yourself that iBrowse 2.2 is suitable for your requirements.»

Conclusion: At this time further development of iBrowse is not to expect. But at eGroups still a discussion forum for iBrowse users is available: http://www.egroups.com/group/ibrowselist.

Wow, have we been a blessed company. On December 27, 1999 we executed our agreement with Gateway, and January 3rd 2000 was our first day of business.

In one year we have been able to release an upgrade to the AmigaOS (3.9, with our partners Haage and Partner), we have announced and released two versions of the SDK for the New AmigaDE (Digital Environment), we have released the AmigaOne specification and announced two partners in building these new machines, (bPlan, and Eyetech).

Yes this has been an amazing year.

As we look back upon these last 12 months, there have been many lessons learned, and it is with these new lessons that we will be moving into 2001, with clear focus, and numerous new announcements and deals. Yes, the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas will be great fun for Amigans around the world, for it is here that the rest of the world will begin to learn what you already know! :-)

At this time of remembrance and thanks, we are also reminded of our friends that we have lost. Coz, Bob Cosby is very missed and we think of him, and pray daily for his wife Marsha. It has been the most sobering event for Amiga, and it helped us to remember that Family is what makes Amiga great. We are looking to add many new members to the Amiga family this year.

This year has been hard for us in other ways also: the stock market has certainly hindered our ability to raise the capital we wanted to accelerate our plans, and many of us have had to endure financial hardships making the dream of Amiga a reality. The Amiga team is together, and moving ahead quickly towards this new and exciting year.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support and for everyone hanging in there with us.

We are truly a blessed company.

I want to personally wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, and a very Happy New Year.

God Bless,
><> Bill McEwen ><>
President CEO Amiga, Inc,

EZP@gerNG Christmas release
The latest version 1.3 is immediately available - it can be downloaded from the download area.

The unregistered version is free as always. All registered EZP@agerNG users find an update archive there which they can use to update their registered version 1.2 to version 1.3.

The most important changes in this release:
  • Different backfill images are supported for the EZP screen, the main window and the requester.
  • toolbar graphics are evaluated a lot more flexible so that the creation of own toolbars is much easier now.
  • Shell and ARexx scripts to install toolbar and service images more easily.
  • New ARexx command SENDMAIL to make the sending of e-mails through ARexx easier.
  • Arguments can be passed to the ARexx menu item scripts

All changes of this release. A merry Christmas to all Amiga users and a happy new year 2001!

Happy X-Mas
With this entry in the amiga news, we would like to thank you for the many visits and the great support.

The last year has brought quite some changes to those working on the web. Even at us, the PC and thus Flash5 have made their entrances - which doesn't mean that we will leave or neglect the Amiga sector. On the contrary: there's something planned in the Amiga sector for next year, you'll be pleasantly surprised!

A special thanks to the AMIGA-NEWS-TEAM. Always reliable and latest informations. Thanks also to Stefan Kost (SOUNDFX) and Patrick Meng (SYMPHONIEPRO) for the uncomplicated co-operation.

We wish all who read this pleasant Christmas days and a successful and purposeful year 2001. Your 2IDs.TEAM

New beta version (V.45.00 beta 4) of stormamiga.lib V.45.00 for StormC
After a long time there's a new version of stormamiga.lib as a Christmas gift from Matthias Henze. The most important improvements in this version are certainly the new, very fast and exact math functions for the MC68040 and MC68060. Other function were also rewritten from the scratch up. Furthermore, there are many optimizations and some bugfixes.

Amiga Extreme takes a break
«Amiga Extreme will be closing for a while. This is because I feel that I don't have the motivation to continue the site, and the fact that there's almost nothing to post, I don't see much of a point in updating. There are better sites for that (Amiga.org and Czech Amiga News for example).

Once again, this is not the end, it's just the end for Amiga Extreme on the classic platform. The next time Amiga Extreme will open is when the AmigaONE release is closing in on us and when there's some real news for the new platform. I'm already working on a new design and have lots of ideas for the new AE.

Also, the e-mail addresses will still be up, so you can mail me at syke@amigaextreme.com. More info will be posted when it's time. I have no plans to leave the Amiga platform, and I'm confident that the new Amiga platform will be successful. Your sincerely - Stefan "Syke" Falk - webmaster@amigaextreme.com.»

FMdriver V1.14 BETA released
Stefan writes:
On my homepage is now an official beta version of my driver system for the FrameMachine video card. New additions include a GrabbingCenter, hardware drivers were moved into a library (68k and PPC), slight speed improvements, localisation of the most important programs and a couple of little things ... :)

I can only offer limited support until February 2001 as I will put all my projects "on ice" to allow me more time for my studies. Thanks for your understanding!

Christmas is soon ... what's missing? Of course, my annual "Christmas letter" ;-), here in English.

Back to the Roots Amiga-News 226
Christmas is near and again another year has passed. Therefore "Back to the Roots" (http://www.back2roots.org) brings you some nice presents in form of some wonderful classic Amiga games - as always for free and with permission!

The companies Dynamix and Digital Integration are supporting our project now, too so the flight simulations Red Baron, F-16 Combat Pilot and Tornado are now online. Also the great adventure games Space Quest 1 (the remake!), Colonel's Bequest, Code name: Iceman and others like Thunderhawk, Wonder Dog, Vroom and Warhead!

There are interviews with the legendary Scene-musicians "Jester/ Sanity" and "Clawz/Bomb" online, too! Both are telling some interesting news, not only for music lovers. As usual there were also tons of Scene-demos, pictures and modules from Amiga games and the demo scene added.

We'd like to thank all our visitors for their support during the last year and send greetings to all companies and people who helped us to keep the classic stuff alive. We wish you all a merry X-mas and a happy new year.

ANN: Fleecy Discussing
Michael wrote: «Each one who is not perfectly aware of the intentions and attitudes of Amiga Inc. might be interested in the long discussion at ANN (see title link - ca. 350 kB).

Even if it might never happen and MorphOS assumedly would be the better choice, so it might be interesting with Fleecy Moss' statements there in mind for once to consider the "50,000-copies"-edge to be the promise of a solid 4.0 PPC under active headship by Amiga Inc. Contrary to the suspicion this might only be an unsocial lure to gain more income, cause I initially took it by this, too.

It's a pity that always only hard discussions and impeachment generate clarifying answers from Amiga Inc. or other companies. In this case regarding the 50,000 copies promise.»

Heise: Background details: Microsoft are Stricken
«Crippled due to the cartel case, tantalized by cracker's attacks, and trailed by the general downwards trend of the PC branch the software giant from Redmond now starts to paddle hectically. Because the signs are indicating storm: For the first time after ten years and for the second time in the company's history at all Microsoft had to call out a profit caution for the current quarter. PC sales in the otherwise so opulent Christmas business are stagnating worldwide, thus the best income source stops bubbling the way Bill Gates' crew was used to. After all, almost a third of volume of sales Microsoft draws from the fact that vendors sell PC's along with Windows or other products by Microsoft.»

VirusHelp Denmark: Virus Warning
Today we received a new 'lame' trojan. This trojan will only execute it self if you have named your hard-disk "DH0" & "DH1". The trojan is spread in and archive with the name "DKG-BLUM.LHA". If you run the "DKG-BLUM.exe", the trojan will replace your c:loadwb with another loadwb (size: 3560 bytes) and replace c:assign with another assign (size: 2408 bytes), and the screen will tell you that there is not enough memory, and you will have to restart, then it looks like the trojan will delete DH1:.
The trojan also adds or replaces 2 other files, "LIBS:asi.library" & "DEVS:ASI.device".

The cure right now (If you have lost your DH1: to bad......), then replace the trojan files with clean ones, here is the trojan sizes:

c:loadwb ( 3560 bytes) c:assign ( 2408 bytes) libs:asi.library (24548 bytes - delete if you dont have clean file) devs:asi.device ( 2408 bytes - delete if you dont have clean file)

Here is some info about the infected archive:

Virus Type.... : Trojan
Archive name.. : dkg-blum.lha
Archive size.. : 28.535 bytes (lha packet)

This archive has been send to all the antivirus programers.....

Thanx to Peter Gordon & Urban for the info and sending the archive to us........

  • Bugfix: Position calculation rewritten. No more accidently deleted entries.
  • Bugfix: Drop-Typ "Sorted" never occured
  • Bugfix: Renaming the user field wasn't possible.
  • Bugfix: MUIV_NListtree_Insert_ListNode_ActiveFallback (see Autodocs).
  • Bugfix: Inserting open nodes into one closed leaded to wrong position calculation (reported by Luca 'Hexaae' Longone, thx)
  • New: Second find method implemented (user field). This searching function is rather meant as a backup to have different searching possibilities, if needed. (Hooks must not always be set again).
  • New: MUIA_NListtree_ShowTree implemented (tree on / off). Useful for different sorting orders for which a tree structure maybe isn't wanted.
  • New: Spanish localisation by Javier de las Rivas.
  • New: New Trigger-Attribute: MUIA_NListtree_SelectChange.

UAE-JIT: Service Pack for 'Ipswich Town'
On December 15th, 2000 Bernd Bernie Meyer has released a service pack for the 'Ipswich Town' version of 'UAE-JIT' for Linux/386, which is an Amiga emulator. This Update in general fixes bugs of the previous version. Particulary it was made more stabel, and portable while speed did not change. So this update in general addresses those who had problems with the previous version in using or compiling it. A detailed list of changes made are to find in the WHATSNEW-JIT-Text.

This version is available as Linux/x86 binary for glibc V2.1 or glibc V2.0 in form of complete source code or source code patch for the UAE V0.8.15 Source code. In the source code archive the file 'dirct_access.c' is missing, which should be downloaded separately in addition.

New InstallerNG
I have uploaded a new version of InstallerNG to the support page (and to Aminet). A stupid bug in the message system of the built-in BOOPSI GUI has been fixed, and new is the CALL-PLUGIN function which allows the user to implement own functions in InstallerNG by a typed API and to use it from a script. Example source code for this as well as for all of the other API modules are included.

«3ivx is to be made available for every platform as there are Windows, Macintosh, BeOS, Linux, Amiga, and other. A related player is planned as open source project. Already for now there exists a delta version 1.0d1 of the 3ivx decoder for MacOS Classic and Windows at the download area of the 3ivix pages. To play the example videos Apple-Player from version QuickTime 4.0 is needed. Initial tries to use this decoder with the QuickTime player under Windows leaded to less successful results - the format wasn't recognized.»

Bonds v1.78 BETA3 with New Homepage
Sven Droege wrote:
The users of the financial software Bonds had to count on long waitstates for updates. Since today there's a new homepage under the known address www.programmed-excellence.de online. Through a server change the access probabily should be improved drastically. Besides that there's a new update v1.78 BETA3, which only contains some small bugfixes. Additionally for registered users there's now the tool "quotations updater", that can be used to update quotations also without Bonds.

The email-address of the author has also changed. It's now Sven.Droege@programmed-excellence.de.

HTMLread v.48
Gunter Hinrichsen has released an update of 'HTMLread' on 17. December 2000 and an update of the Genesis plug-in for HTMLread on 14. December.

HTMLread is an extension for the email client YAM that allows reading HTML mails. YAM can't display e-mails written in HTML for now, as they are sent by Netscape, Eudora or Outlook. HTMLread discovers, converts and sends these e-mails to a HTML viewer.

Some changes have been made in the new version: Two bugs were fixed, it's become smaller, condition images are supported, the download manager now doesn't open his condition windows anymore when you're offline, the downloadmanager now knows the option QUIET, better looking condition GIFs and some more changes.

The Genesis plug-in toggles Genesis automatically on- and offline again for the download of web-images. Download:

The move became necessary as the web-space Neervoort needs to keep the page running wasn't sufficient anymore at T-Online coupled with other providers of web-space.
