Crowd funding: Monkey Island as stage play
The theater project "Kulturreederei e.V." in Halle (Saale) is going to perform the adventure classic game Monkey Island as stage play. The budget required for such a project cannot be collected by selling tickets - therefore the theater project tries to collect the 12.000 Euro via the crowd funding platform StartNext. MorphOS: Support of other CPU-architecture planned
Three years ago the MorphOS-team for the first time thought about a change of the CPU-architecture. During the discussion about MorphOS on the X5000, the question was asked again on Morphzone.info, which answered Mark 'Bigfoot' Olsen :

"When MorphOS gets ported to AMD64, we will not be supporting Macs. AMD64 Macs have all the wrong hardware for that to make any sense. When such a time does come, expect us to support one desktop motherboard (with one family of CPUs and GPUs) and one laptop. We'll of course make sure it's hardware that's actually available one way or another."

Mark 'Bigfoot' Olsen also confirmed that on a long-term basis it is planned to support different processor architectures. The only reasonable options are ARM and AMD64. Which one then finally will be support still was not decided. Olsen pointed out to his statement from November 2014. There he explained all the problems occuring when changing the CPU. Hyperion Entertainment CVBA (ANF)

Hyperion: statement about the company's current situation
In February, Hyperion was declared bankrupt by a Belgian judge, but two months later the judgement got reversed again. The company has now released a statement detailing their view on the matter and announcing an internal reorganization.

Press release: Contrary to some news items posted on certain websites, Hyperion Entertainment CVBA is not in a state of bankruptcy. Due to an unfortunate set of cirucmstances, the company was temporally listed as "bankrupt" despite the fact that the conditions for bankruptcy were never met and that in the eyes of the law, the company was never bankrupt.

Development of AmigaOS 4 (which recently culminated in the release of AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition) is and has been ongoing albeit that some resources had to be directed away to support the upcoming hardware of A-EON Technology.

The company is in the process of reorganizing itself by opening up its shareholdership and appointing a new exective director. More details on that will follow when all legal formalities are behind us.

Quite a few AmigaOS 4 supporters have approached us with the question what they can do to help us accelerate development of AmigaOS 4.2.

To that we have a very simple answer: please upgrade all your AmigaOS 4 capable hardware to AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition.

Not only will AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition be used as a base-line for future updates, you will also help us to accelerate AmigaOS 4.2 development!

Those of you who have other concrete ideas, we welcome to contact us.

We appreciate your support and we look forward to meet you at any of the upcoming celebrations of the Amiga's 30th birthday! (cg) (Translation: cg)

AROS: 68k-Distribution Aros Vision 2.9.2 / Other versions planned
Version 2.9.2 of the AROS/68k-distribution Aros Vision provided by Olaf Schönweiß (screenshot) includes updates of some programms as well as a new screensaver.

In addition, in future there will be different versions of the distribution. To this version in future a "RTG" will be added. Aros Vision ECS (for real 68k-hardware and FPGA-reconstructions) and Aros Vision X86 (screenshots: EdiSyn, Antyriad) are in development.

The last mentioned distribution is based on the Windows-hosted version of AROS which makes it easier to launch it because you do not have to install it. Disadvantage: So far network and audio support is not included. Other platforms are planned.

Changes of version 2.9.2:
  • New structure
  • Netsurf updated
  • Free Pascal updated
  • Theme can be changed in the menu
  • MUI-classes updated
  • Hollywood-plugins updated
  • AppStore-client updated
  • Should run faster now
  • New: Screensaver

Benchmarks: Warp 3D SI on the dem Sam460 and the X1000
During the last few days, AmigaOS 4 users started to collect benchmark results for the recently released commercial Warp 3D drivers for Radeon HD graphic cards. The results are collected and presented on amigans.net, an older result using a Sam440 and the onboard Radeon Mobility chip was provided by Alain Thellier (Wazp 3D) back in 2013.

Two benchmarks are performed, with the exception of Thelliers older test the results were all recorded using the Final Edition of AmigaOS 4.1.
  • Quake 3 Timedemo 1: using Hugues 'HunoPPC' Nouvels ioquake3-Portierung (Ioquake3.lha), a resolution of 1280x1024, these Settings and MiniGL 2.20
  • Cow 3D (a Warp 3D benchmark from Alain Thellier): When running this, the Buffers should be enabled using the 'b' key, to make sure the Frames don't have to be recalculated by the CPU constantly and you're only benchmarking the graphics performance.
Below you can see the benchmark results published so far, benchmarks with older Radeon graphic cards are not available currently. The listed values mean 'frames displayed per second' (FPS), so the higher the value, the better the result:

Editor's note: In some cases, the users didn't list average values, but FPS ranges. For the sake of simplicity, we used the higher value of the two - the difference is neglegible anyway. The listed values were all provided by AmigaOS 4 users, Amiga-News staff has no means of verifying them. (cg) (Translation: cg)

Web-finding: The contract between Amiga Corp. and Atari, 1983
At atarimuseum.com, a copy as well as scans of the contract are available which concluded Amiga Corp. and Atari. The startup Amiga urgently required additional financial resources to finish its development of the prototype named "Lorraine". Atari would secure its rights to the chips developed by Amiga to use them in its next computer generation.

The published excerpts concentrates on the planned features of Amigas' computer. Some interesting details are hidden in the contract: That the computer should be able to read Apple-disks and their texts. Additionally the programming languages "Lorraine BASIC" and FORTH should be included in the delivery of the computer equipped with 128 KB. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Self-made project: Wifi Joystick Adapter 1.0
A Croatian Amiga user has made an adapter which wireless transfers the input of any joystick to the computer (Youtube video, photographs: 1, 2). The receiver is powered by the computer, the transmitter has to be powered via an USB-cable (e.g. a recharger cable for a mobile phone).

For the wireless communication a microcontroller ATMega8 as well as a NRF24L01+ and as development environment Arduino were used. According to the developer there is no delay while playing. He estimates the loss of time is less than 2 milliseconds.

Vurrently the adapter does not work with mice. The author supposes that the reason is the higher amount of data transferred. He will try to solve the problem but so far does not have any approach to a solutions.

Trademark recycling: Android smartphones from 'Commodore Business Machines'
According to the Italian Wikipedia (automated translation) the "Commodore" trademark has been acquired by a Massimo Canigiani in 2014. If this is true or what "acquired" actually means is currently unknown to us. According to the EU trademark database, the relevant "Commodore" marks are still owned by Dutch Commodore Holdings B.V. There is a Commodore mark registered in Italy, but it's still assigned to ESCOM.

As Commodore Holdings is still defending the mark aggressively - the organisator of a Crowdfunding effort to reproduce the C64 II cases got a written warning recently - it's safe to assume the situation will become more clear soon.

At least Canigiani seems to be quite confident: He already incorporated a company called "Commodore Business Machines Ltd." in England. Using the official website and a Facebook page he's already advertising his first product: an Android based smartphone sporting a Commodore 'chickenhead' logo. (cg) (Translation: cg)
