BarsnPipes New 1.28
Alfred Faust wrote: With one year of delay I finally published a new version of BarsnPipes New which can be downloaded under the title link. The new version includes some bug fixes as well as some improvements which I wrote in the History in detail.

Please note: Because of insuperable problems with the camd.library in the Classic version for AmigaOS 2.x I had to cease the development of this version. Therefore there will be only the 8 and 32-colour versions of BarsnPipes New for AmigaOS 3.x. (snx) (Translation: dr)

AROS for Efika: First alpha version available
Under the bounty project Michal Schulz has published a first alpha version of his port of the open source operating system AROS to the PowerPC-board Efika.

The ISO-image can be burned on a disc and then be started with a CD or DVD-USB drive connected to the Efika board. For that please enter the commands "setenv boot-device cd" and "boot cd os_image" in the Open Firmware. If the question "Boot? >" appears then enter a "1".

Please note that this early version has several bugs which might cause crashes. Driver for IDE and network still are not available. Furthermore missing files as well as much debug information are reported.

MorphOS: Firewire-Stack Helios 0.1.162
Guillaume "Yomgui" Roguez has published a first version of his recently announced Firewire-Stack for MorphOS. Currently "Helios" has the following limitations:
  • Isochrone mode not supported
  • Asynchrone mode limitations: Ping request not supported, Lock request/response not supported
  • No bus management yet (to support the isochrone mode)
  • FWInspect shows only the first PCI OHCI1394 bridge found on the host
  • Functions Helios_EnableBus() / Helios_DisableBus() work but cause system crashes when helios.library is flushed, then reloaded

The archive also includes a SDK for developers. Roguez points out that the API of the helios.library will be changed in this early status. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Poll: How much 68k-compatibility do you expect of a x86-AmigaOS?
Under the title link amiga-news.de hast started a poll which is written in German. Giving you the possibility to take part as well here is the English translation of the poll:

Question: How much 68k-compatibility a Amiga-like operating system at least should have got so you would buy it for 120 to 150 Euro for your x86-computer?

Answers:
- No compatibility at all. The current developments for the Amiga and some ports would be sufficient.
- A simple possibility to start 68k-applications with an emulator (UAE-integration) would be sufficient.
- I need the same 68k-compatibility as it is integrated in AmigaOS4 or MorphOS.
- I would only buy it if it works under WinUAE.
- I would never buy an operating system for x86 which is compatible to Amiga.

Thanks for your participation! (snx) (Translation: dr)

AROS: Instant Messenger SabreMSN 0.41
James "jahc" Carroll has ported his MSN-client SabreMSN to AROS. UTF8-support is still not implemented under AROS but will be added with the next update. Further limitations are the same as in the original AmigaOS-version:
  • Sometimes the SSL stuff fails when trying to connect, so the only thing you can do is keep clicking connect after it fails each time
  • The list of Online contacts isnt always sent in full when I first connect. I havent found an answer to that problem yet. So it appears like everyones offline, or most of your online contacts are offline. Reconnecting to the server once or twice in a row seems to restore the list properly sometimes.
  • Sometimes Sabre reapers. I've only had this happen twice in the last few weeks though. It seems to be dying on the MUI input loop, but maybe I've done something illegal before that call..
  • Newly added contacts arent added to the list, you need to reconnect to see them
  • Sometimes outgoing file transfers report during mid-transfer: "The file transfer was unsuccessful because your computer is out of disk space. Try deleting some files, and then ask the sender to try the transfer again."
  • Sabre uses the older MSN file transfer protocol, so many recent MSN clients fail when trying to send a file to Sabre.
