Genesi: Taking Part in HCC-Dagen Show in the Netherlands
Genesi SARL announced their participation at the Dutch HCC-Dagen from 28th through 30th November. Reportedly this is the biggest show of its kind in the Benelux lands, with attendance in previous years reaching 100,000 by some accounts.

They'll be guests at the stand (D106, hall 9) of Tyra-Group.

Tyra-Group is going to introduce their CS-2 system ("Communication Station 2") at HCC-Dagen. This is a new system configuration that is small in size (A4), but with space for a standard 5.25" drive, a 5.25" slim bay, a 5.25" "quarterdrive bay," a 3.5" floppy drive, two hard-drives as well as expansion cards of normal height with additional room for high graphic cards. The TFT screen can be changed out as can the powerpack, both standard, off-the-shelf components.

The "CS-2 Deluxe" is a complete home multimedia system based on Genesi's Pegasos and running MorphOS as well as Tyra-Group's proprietary software. (snx) (Translation: dm)

The CAPS Team (ANF)

CAPS Update
The CAPS team (who concern themselves with the archiving of old, copy-protected Amiga games, to include copy-protection written on the flags) has converted another bunch of games into CAPS format. This format may for example be read by new UAE versions.

A list of the new games is available from the CAPS homepage. In the meantime more than 1200 games have been archived, among them some very scarce titles such as "Hacker" or a few of the first games from Electronic Arts. CAPS is now looking for people who own other original games and would like to help with the archiving.

Additionally the Amiga version of CAPS Library, which makes possible the use mounting of diskette images that are then worked on by CAPS, is being overhauled. (cg) (Translation: dm)

Carsten Siegner (ANF)

Analogue data capture for Amiga
For the recently by Carsten Siegner announced 3-wire bus interface to control different ICs (we reported) is now a circuit diagram as well as some pictures available as a PDF document.

To be able to use the interface has Carsten written a short measuring program that outputs the given voltage as integer byte number and as floating point number.

Before using the program the following ENV variables have to be set:
  • "Analog-device": (used serial device)
  • "Analog-unit": (used serial unit)
  • "Analog-volt": (maximum measured, permissible voltage and voltage to reach. Typical here are 5 V. Here you should measure again with a multimeter as you can get under circumstances values between 4.089 - 5.04 V.)

The program needs the following files:
  • Rexxtricks
  • tritonrexx
  • rexxserdev

The program and the mentioned circuit diagram and photos are available as LHA archives.

Direct download (190 KB)

For the future Carsten plans the data capture with several channels. For this he has already got a chip LTC 1293. This can collect and convert six different analogue measure data and forward them sequentially to the computer. (cg) (Translation: wk)

CCC (email)

CCC: central saving of biometrical data endangers constitutional rights
The approach of the "Bund Deutscher Kriminalbeamten" (BDK) to save biometrical characteristics of all European citizens in a central data base causes hardest reservations at the Chaos Computer Club (CCC); the constitutional rights of informational self-determination would then be abolished in a fundamental area - while the use for the combating of crime isn't even proofed.

The CCC opposes especially against the idea of a central data saving as it has been last demanded by the speaker of the "Bund deutscher Kriminalbeamten", Holger Bernsee. In the view of the CCC the potential misuse and possible desires in the context of a central data tracking is out of all proportion to the possible gain in the combating of crime that (the possible gain) can be realized with a technically clearly less democracy endangering system. Interview with Alan Redhouse from Eyetech (Update)
The Amiga-portal AmigaWorld has interviewed Alan Redhouse who is the manager of the Eyetech Group.

Update: (cg, 21.11.2003, 14:25)

We have summarized the most important statements of Alan Redhouse in the following lines:
  • Alan Redhouse thinks that more AmigaOnes have been sold than other "open" (that means not Apple/IBM) PPC systems.
  • since AmigaOS4 has been officially demonstrated on the AmigaOne the amount of sold AmigaOnes has been increased
  • currently it is tried to deliver all "Earlybird"-customers a beta version of OS4 if possible before Christmas
  • the Onboard Graphic-chip of the Micro-A1 is still not certain but probably it will become a low-cost Radeon Chip
  • the "High-Tech" interfaces (RAID, Gigabit Ethernet, USB2, Firewire) will be implemented at the Micro-A1 probably on a seperate, optional platine. Because of that the board will become cheaper for customers.
  • Waiting peroid when ordering an AmigaOne motherboard: ca. two weeks (Complete system: Four weeks)
  • Until now there have been two problems refered to the DMA at the AmigaOne: The first is caused by VIA bug and has been fixed with the help of a software patch. The second problem is that the ArticiaS enables the simultaneous access of CPU and a of a PCI busmaster to the memory. In the x86-world this is not usual because of that the (of Linux-x86 ported) Linux drivers may not manage this. This oddity of the ArticiaS is supposed to be a included "turbo" which makes the computer "smarter". AmigaOS4 is not affected by these two problems
  • Exactly fitting boxes are not possible because of the costs but Eyetech works with Naya Design on some modifications which change the standard boxes to Amiga boxes in a cheap way.
  • Single-CPU-modules with faster G3/G4-processors already exists and have been presented officially, too. But there must be ca. 400 preorders to enable such a product. Because of that only dual-cpu modules has planned.
  • The AmigaOne in Micro-ATX format has planned only for the end of the next year.

"Pirates!" Clone: Graphic Artists Sought for "Drake"
The ZeroVertex-team of Oliver Gantert has been working for some time on a 3D clone of the strategy classic "Pirates!." Now that big steps with the game engine have been taken in the last few months, and Oliver says this is "about 98% ready," the thing urgently needed now is 3D graphic artists.

ZeroVertex is looking for 3D artists and animators who make use of 3dsmax, Milkshape3D, or some other software that offers "bone animation" support. Further, they need 3D artists who can produce static models like houses, plants, and they need texture artists as well, who can come up with textures for the existing models.

Whoever wants to help should send an email to Oliver Gantert. (cg) (Translation: dm)
