Here they are the new G5 computers of Apple. And this is said about the new computers by Apple itself: "The Power Mac G5 is the worldwide fastest personal computer and the first computer with a 64bit processor. As the first personal computer the Power Mac G5 breaks through the 4 gigabyte border. It is able to use up to 8 gigabyte main memory. Additional to the speed of up to 2 times 2 GHz the new G5 processor has a new system architecture with high band width and AGP 8x and PCI-X-slot. 20 June 2003: The LZW patent expires today in the United States. However, patents on LZW are still in force in other countries. Please continue to refrain from using GIFs. More importantly, do not allow your communications to be censored by the whims of patent holders. Things you can do:
  1. Oppose the expansion of software patents to your country, if such patents are not available there now.
  2. Insist that standards bodies in which you participate make an an "innovation compatible" (IC) license a requirement for any patents needed to implement a standard.
  3. Develop and support software that works with non-patented file formats and network protocols, instead of patent-encumbered ones.
Sign the petition against software patents in Europe.

Multimedia Authoring System: Malibu Version 1.0
Malibu 1.0 - the Scala plugin for Hollywood - is out now. When Malibu is installed, Hollywood will suddenly be able to display your Scala presentations. The compatibility is very high. You can run almost every Scala script. In 24-bit of course and absolutely RTG friendly! You can even compile your Scala presentations to AmigaOS executables or native MorphOS executables! A truly unique feature! Malibu is available in a version for AmigaOS3 as well as in a native MorphOS PPC version. Malibu requires at least Hollywood 1.5 and can be ordered in a discounted bundle together with the Hollywood 1.5 update or the Hollywood 1.5 full version.

-Introduction-

Malibu is a plugin for Hollywood which contains an import filter for Scala presentations. As soon as Malibu is installed, Hollywood will suddenly be able to show Scala presentations or compile them.

With Malibu it is now possible for the first time to display Scala presentations on Workbench screen or on your own public screen. Because the whole emulation runs on top of Hollywood's multimedia application layer everything will be first converted to 24-bit and then displayed. In many cases the quality of the pictures that Malibu displays is much better than the original Scala quality because Scala often had to remap many pictures with very different colors to a 8-bit display which resulted in a massive loss of color information.

Malibu emulates nearly the whole Scala command set and supports all Scala versions up to Scala InfoChannel 500 which was the last Amiga version of Scala. Emulation is done by the elCapitan microkernel which tries to achieve the best performance possible on the used system. For example, the next page is already calculated while the current page is on the display. Complex transition effects can also be pre-calculated and then displayed smoothly.

Scala is a program which helped the Amiga to become a real Multimedia wonder. There were no products for a long long time that could beat an Amiga with Scala. Therefore Scala was widely used in all different production fields, from movies and television to big shows. Everyone who has worked with Scala knows what powers it has. But this power is only possible because Scala is very hard coded to the Amiga's custom chips which leads to the problem that it does not run on graphics boards and also has some other major problems with today's Amiga systems. For many years all sorts of users complained that there is no Scala that runs RTG compatible. This time is over now. Scala revives with the Malibu plugin: On the Workbench? Of course. In 24-bit? You can bet your life on that. Always RTG conform? Absolutely.

MorphOS: Iconset "MAME Bubbles Vol.1" released
I've just uploaded "MAME Bubbles Vol.1" to my homepage. It's a set of icons in 32bit PNG format with attached shell scripts for easy launching MAME games from MorphOS Ambient Desktop.

Fortnightly Q&A's with Fleecy Moss - episode 13
The English online magazine AmigaWorld has published episode 13 of the regular questions and answers session with Fleecy Moss, CTO at AMIGA, Inc. (Update 2012-03-17, cg: as the original document is no longer available, the following content was moved into our database):

1) MetalJoe: Previous versions of the OS have had official support for C and Assembler developers. What languages (i.e. C, Assembler, C++, Objective-C) will be officially supported in the initial OS 4 SDK and which, if any, are planned for future 4.x releases?

Fleecy: C and C++ will be supported in the first instance. We are talking with third parties about other support (Basic, Forth, and some others). We are more interested in getting a comprehensive toolchain and documentation in place before we start considering other language support.

2) Rudei: Can you clarify that the Amiga trademarks are indeed safe and still licenced to Amiga Inc? There has been a lot of malicious talk recently and it would be helpful to have an official line so we can quash the rumours once and for all.

Fleecy: Our attorney tells us that everything is as it should be. You will never quash the rumours because the reason for them is mischief and as long as they are people out there wanting to cause mischief, then there will be rumours. We just keep quiet and get on with it.

3) Dandy: Will DRM (digital rights management) and/or TCPA have any impact on AmigaOs-platform and if so, of what kind will this impact be? (As I understood it, it will be forbidden to advertise or sell hardware within the USA which does not include/support TCPA)

Fleecy: DRM is something that many OEMs are asking for as well as many developers who are tied of losing sales via piracy.

However it is still a very fluid and unsure area in both legal and technical application and it is not at a point where we have to give it much general consideration, just on a per customer basis.

4) hnl_dk: What do you think of the outcome, of the "OS4.0 on tour 2003" until now?

Fleecy: I think it has been very good. The fact that dealers and user groups worked together to organise it is a testament to the power of the Amiga community, where everything doesn't have to be driven by the centre. Jurgen and the others have done a great job and it has started some lively debate about the new default interface and praise for many of the new graphical features. That alone has caused a huge increase in requests for information and registrations of interest from around the world. For those who have stood fast through all the rumours about how it will never happen, then it will never work, it must be giving them a good feeling to see that their trust was not misplaced. The power of Amiga is about getting through the bad times as well as the good times and the supporters, the AmigaOS4.0 team and the community in general has come into its own and from here on, things will accelerate towards launch and rebirth of the platform.

5) Wain: What does the current AmigaOS roadmap plan in regards to upgrade costs? Do we pay full retail cost for every OS version up to 5 and after? I realize none of this is set in stone.

Fleecy: For AmigaOS4, this is the most likely although we are considering some form of product subscription as well, wrapped up with extra services and support.

6) Turbo: Is the aim for Amiga OS4 to be exclusive to AmigaOne based hardware? If not, how will this manifest itself? Will it run on top of intent? Could it be ported to custom hardware like you would find in say... a PlayStation 3?

Fleecy: The AmigaOS4 product family will run on any PPC solution that is certified by Amiga. We have several customers in various stages of negotiation as to getting AmigaOS4 onto their products. AmigaOne is the only desktop. The Amiga Generation 2 (AG2) product represents the next stage of developing core Amiga technology that can then be used in various product lines, including the AmigaOS and the AmigaDE. The ultimate aim of AG2 is to have a core technology pool that is hardware agnostic and which implements advanced technologies that can be used anywhere we want and which, most importantly can span the different types of devices to create a single environment for OEMs, developers and users.

7) pods: I know of people who have expressed disapointment of the current workbench and icons libraries implementation. Has there been schedules, or has there been talk about replacing these implementation with something more up to date?

Fleecy: The development of AmigaOS4 had a very strict priority. Encapsulate hardware dependencies to create an abstraction, move and then enhance the core of the AmigaOS into this abstraction and then replace Amiga Generation 1 domains by Amiga Generation 2 technology. AmigaOS4.0 is dealing admirably with moving our platform from a 68k and custom chip based solution to a modern PPC, modular subsystem hardware model. In doing that, it is far more important for us to ensure that the foundations are made solid, efficient and then improved.

graphics.library, layers, intuition and Workbench are all very old services that have been hacked and patched beyond even the wildest dreams of Dr Frankenstein. The fact that it all still works and that it can be made to look even better is a testament not just to the far sightedness of the original designers but also the the immense skill and knowledge of the AmigaOS4.0 team.

However, one of the AG2 projects currently underway is for the entire visual domain, 2D, 3D, Video and User Environment and we are working hard to ensure that most if not all of that technology will be in AmigaOS4.1. You can be sure that we will keep the community apprised and show off some of the visual delights to come as soon as we can.

8) Sbaitso: Are you familiar with the Amizilla project? What are your feelings about it? Is there any chance Amiga, Inc. may contribute to the cause?

Fleecy: I think it is another great example of the Amiga community in action and putting its money where its mouth is to improve and extend the platform. We will not contribute to the cause because it is a third party effort and also because if the rules of the project are correct, then we would be supporting potential competitors as well.

However, the most important reason is because a brand new, world class HTML rendering solution is one of elements of AmigaOS4.1.

9) Asemoon: Are Amiga's PDA game packages selling well at CompUSA stores and will they become available at stores in Europe?

Fleecy: They appear to have sold out in most stores in the US and we are in negotiations with Microsoft both to extend the number of cards and the volume of cards. We are talking with other vendors who themselves want to sell the Gamecards and some of these are active in the European market. We'll post more details when we can.

10) Asemoon: Will there be any alternative themes included on the AmigaOS4 CD?

Fleecy: It is something that is being considered but we want to at least have one that is complete before considering adding others.

OS4 Tour Basle: Short report
Yesterday the Amiga OS4 Tour stopped by in the centre of Basle. Several times did Jürgen Schober of pointdesign hold a presentation with subsequent question time on the event organised by the Amiga User Group Switzerland (AUGS). One of the presentations was even translated live for the numerous French speaking Amiga fans by a member of the Club Annuaire Amiga Francophone.

Due to the large number of visitors (from Switzerland, France, Germany and Holland), the interesting performances and the good mood AUGS as organisers are very satisfied with the course of the meeting and warmly thank all those involved.

SmartScale Version 2.0c
Lorence Lombardo has provided his CLI/WB program for picture converter scripts SmartScale in Version 2.0c for download on his homepage. SmartScale Readme

New Wordworth plugin for text viewer EvenMore
Chris Perver has rewritten the Wordworth plugin for his text viewer EvenMore. Here is the original anouncement:
"Rewrote WordWorth plugin. Will now pick up command packets, and will display any ANSI text formatting. Still to work on colour, but this seems more complicated. Colour support now added to the WordWorth plugin."

Emulator: UAE-X Version 0.8 - Amiga-Emulator for X-Box
You can emulate an Amiga 500 or Amiga 1200 on your X-Box with UAE-X. UAE-X has been released under General Public Licence. The Micorosft XBOX XDK is required for compiling. Besides the new version 0.8 you'll find extensive information and some screenshots under the title link.
New in version 0.8:
  • SnaX: added config selection. uae config files are now in /configs/ -SnaX & Zhevon: XBOX Keyboard support!
  • Schlauchi: better default config file (old savestates might be broken, you'll have to load "Default (from previous UAEX versions)" to have them work)
  • SnaX: Hardfile support working

It is used for reading HTML pages and embedded images (if there are) downloaded along with e-mails using YAM mail client for Amiga. It uses various Amiga browsers. The ARexx program has Italian doc. too.

TTEngine ported to MorphOS
TTEngine is a TrueType Font based text rendering environment for AmigaOS. Author Grzegorz Kraszewski has ported the program to MorphOS. It has been tested on a standard Pegasos with a G3/600 MHz. "TTEngine achieves over 12000 cps in JAM1 mode and over 20000 cps in JAM2 mode on 24-bit screen and Voodoo3 PCI board, which is over 150% faster compared to emulated 68k version. NOTE: TTEngine MOS requires MorphOS 1.3 or newer."

Software: AntiSPAM 2 now with 70% hit rate (update)
AntiSPAM 2 is finished: the new version of the spam killer works on a new basis and reaches now a dramatically improved hit rate of measured 70%.

Features of AntiSPAM 2 (excerpt):
  1. It analyses spams by the frequency of words.
  2. It needs no remote filters.
  3. It is much easier to install.
  4. It works parallel with YAM and doesn't block it anymore.
  5. It also works offline or in conjunction with other clients.
  6. It has a white list to prevent unwanted deleting.
  7. A manual finetuning is possible.

The Dutch HCC Commodore User Group organizes an Amiga Show on Saturday June 28 from 10:00 till 16:00 at the Trefpunt, Kerkweg 21, Maarssen, Holland. ComputerCity, Genesi and Attention Software will attending our Amiga Show with their newest products like the AmigaOne, Pegasos, VideoMicroWave, a STB Prototype, MorphOS and a new game. There will be a lot of demonstrations and activities and for all Amigans: This is the opportunity to meet all famous national and international Amiga people!

Description:

  • AmigaOne - Amiga computer with G3 or G4 PowerPC microprocessor, works with LinuxPPC operating system or AmigaOS 4.0
  • Pegasos - PowerPC computer from Genesi, with a G3 or Dual G4 PowerPC processor. Operating system MorphOS or LinuxPPC. Some other operating systems will be developed like some Linux variants, BeOS, OpenBSD etc.
  • VideoMicroWave - Soft- and hardware bundle for video on a Pegasos or other Amiga compatible computers. For our demonstration we will show a Pegasos computer in a microwave.
  • STB prototype - Digital signaldecoder from Genesi, based on the Pegasos and MorphOS technology.

Several news services (such as OSNews) reported that today the official online-shop of Apple has announced the exact specifications of the new computer models of Apple. This might have been a mistake because meanwhile the new models have been deleted from the website.

The first release of the offcial MorphOS SDK is available for MDC-members (MorphOS Developer Connection) in the files section. It is called "pre-release" because many but not all OS-parts are considered.

This release of the MorphOS SDK contains:
  • MorphED 1.0
  • a complete PPC-native GCC/GG-compiler-environment
  • a complete set of MorphOS-includes
  • Documentation, example code and articles about the many features of MorphOS
  • the current release of Barfly PPC ASM (as contribution)

Today, the MorphOS Developer Connection (MDC) officially opens its doors.

Every developer working on MorphOS-related projects is welcome and encouraged to become a free member of the MorphOS Developer Connection.

What is the MDC?

The MorphOS Developer Connection (MDC) is mainly a communication and support platform that serves as a central interface between general third party developers and Genesi.

It aims at supporting third party projects and developers interested in development or actively developing for MorphOS with information and organizational infrastructure (if needed).

What are the benefits?

If you join the MDC, you have, among others, the following benefits:
  • access to the MorphOS SDK, including documentation, MorphED and a complete GCC-based compiler environment

Status Report on the Development of UltraBUS
Massimo Mancini, owner of Creative Development, has reported after a long period of radio silence on the status of the development of the UltraBUS.

Because of some hardware damage the Zorro-II-based USB controller received only limited development in the last three months. The development on the project has 100% recommenced after a successful repair of a defective Cyberstorm MK3 card, and it could with a bit of time show clear steps towards trial equipment, port adapters and stack optimizations. In the meantime the hardware itself stands shortly before the serial preparation and is newly improved in certain technical aspects. MorphOS: Possible New Game Project - a Trojan Horse for the Mac?
Genesi came up with an idea of developing a new game. This is considered in a possible cooperation with producer Elie Chouraqui. It might then be possible to use this game as a "Trojan Horse" for the Macintosh version of MorphOS.

Following are both original statements from Raquel Velasco and Bill Buck on MorphZone:

"Gladiateur"

If you have been in Paris the last few days you would have probably seen THIS! It is being produced and directed by Elie Chouraqui. His last film of international renown was Harrison's Flowers (2000).

Last night we had dinner with Elie (thanks to some very good friends of ours). We discussed his latest projects, including "Gladiateur", which is based on the Roman slave uprising lead by Spartacus.

When Raquel and I heard the story line we started to think we might had found our Morph-Apple "Trojan Horse" game.

We told Elie about MorphOS and the Pegasos, contrasting MorphOS and Genesi with Windows and Microsoft...could the Pegasos be the computer gladiator of the 21st Century?! Could the Pegasos inspire another Revolution?! We said OK, let's figure out whether or not we can do it...

Release date: 1 October 2004
MorphOS/Pegasos and Morph-Apple releases
We will invest for this Project! Here are some basic ideas:

1. Themes: Freedom, personal empowerment, responsibility, leadership, teamwork, good vs. evil, changing the world...

2. When a Gladiator (single player) overcomes the challenges of the arena (the CD itself), they qualify to step into the online world and join forces with others who have overcome the arena to fight on for the Revolution (online via the rebellion portal).

Online players hold roles and work together to overcome specific task oriented challenges. Imagine this... You play the CD or through the settings assume an old score...you connect. Online you meet those that are there... you "chat" and plan to overcome the various tasks and requirements.

For example:

Task: Mount Vesuvius
Requirements: Ten Gladiators
Objective: Overcome a Roman Centuria (100 men lead by a Centurion)

The team has to cooperate to be successful and have a strategy for success. Think of Knights and Merchants...

The game and story scale from there. The historical setting is accurate. The greatest success occurs when the most online players cooperate. Game sequences can be re-lived to analyze and improve group game performance. The game takes a quality of its own based on the teamwork and unique skills and resources of the players...

As some know e.p.i.c. is soon to release Northland that could be tuned for the theme we are discussing. We would have to go from vikings to gladiators, but it is not too much of a stretch if the right engine is there and we can get Andre to do some new artwork...

Kickflash OS4: Final product specifications
Due to the high demand, Kickflash OS4, which has been announced on June 2nd, has been revised. The base version now has 1MB of flash memory, and can be expanded to 1GB on an expansion port. Transfer rates can be compared to normal hard drives, but the common access times of mechanical mass-storage media practically don't exist on flash memory: On random access, so-called solid-state memory is about tenthousand times faster than common hard drives.

Kickflash OS4 is a Zorro-card that's compatible with all Zorro-2 and Zorro-3 systems. The new base price for the board is 34,90 EUR. Prices for expansions are not yet available. (ps)

Linux-compatible 64Bit-operating system K42 from IBM for PPC
K42 is a operating-system research project (available under LGPL) focused in large part on scalability in the implementation of core OS services. We will give a brief overview of the project, discuss some of the recent performance results running 64-bit PPC Linux binaries and discuss the major ways that our implementation of Linux services depart from the norm (hopefully making sure to bring up all the truly offensive and contentious ways).

K42 employs building-block technology to allow applications to customize and thus optimize the OS services they require. This is particularly important for applications, such as databases and web servers, where given the ability to control physical resources, they can improve performance. K42 is portable; it currently runs on PowerPC systems (both native and using SimOS). K42's design allows implementors on a particular architecture to choose what objects of the system should be customized for that architecture, and as a result allows the implementors to exploit any architecture specific features to improve performance.
