Stefan Instinske (email)

Event: Maxpo 2001 cancelled
We got yesterday evening information by Stefan Instinske via mail that the Maxpo 2001 is cancelled. As already reported Falke-Media wanted to hold the "AMIGA WORLD 2001" at this fair. Talks with Falke-Media showed that they work with high pressure on finding an alternative location for the Amiga fair. Detailed information about this can be found at the beginning of next week at amiga-messe.de.

Here's the complete mail of Stefan Instinske (translated from German):

++++
| 22:56 | Friday - 10. August 2001 |
What was already in several forums broadcasted as rumor seems now to be official: the Maxpo 2001 in Cologne won't take place this year. Though the organizers have not officially commented on their webseite yet it seems definitely that all exhibitors have been written to and informed about the fair's cancellation. Not least the following message from Arktis makes clear that this year's exhibition falls through:

»As the MAXPO in Cologne unexpectedly won't take place this year ARKTIS holds on the 21. and 22. September a big MAC DAY in the ARKTIS company building in Rosendahl. Detailed information about participiants and supporting programme will follow soon...«

Reason for the cancellation of the fair may well be the withdrawings of some big exhibitors and financial losses resulting from this for the organizers. As soon as we have further and more definitive information we will announce them here of course.
++++

Amiga Inc.

Amiga Inc.: Merlancia buys Amiga Walker and MCC designs
Merlancia Industries is pleased to announce the purchase of the legendary Amiga Walker and MCC designs.

The Walker and MCC designs (created by Frogdesign and Pentagram respectively) are now owned exclusively by Merlancia Industries. These designs will be implemented in Merlancia's MMC/Torro line of multimedia PowerPC products.

The Walker case, designed in 1995-6 by Frogdesign for Escom AG will be implemented in a Space Conservative Desktop unit; expressly useful for offices and cramped desks. The Walker design, currently Merlancia Radian, will feature a PowerPC G3 or G4 (750 and 7410 resp.) processor with an advanced graphics chipset and will be targeted for sale around the $1500 to $2000 price point.

The MCC case, designed in 1999 by Pentagram was planned as Amiga's Multimedia Convergence Console. Merlancia will be implementing this design for its Apocalypse DT and ST series systems, based on the PowerPC 7xx and 8xxx series processors. The MCC design will be implemented in set top box and low cost desktop packages based on the X-Casting Broadband Video delivery method next year for prices ranging between $699 and $1299.

Dr. Ryan E. A. Czerwinski, CEO of Merlancia Industries comments "We anticipate minor styling changes and modifications, as needed for the implementation of our hardware, none of which will effect the beauty or harmony of the case designs. We will be producing the cases out of stainless steel, with the possibility of other materials being available as well."

Bill McEwen, President & CEO of Amiga, Inc said "As Amiga has transformed itself to a Software company, having Merlancia build new products based on these designs is exciting, and we look forward to seeing more great products from the Merlancia team".

Game: Heretic II patch (especially weaker Amigas will benefit from this)
Hyperion Entertainment released a patch for Heretic II for download. Especially weaker Amigas will benefit from this one; BilzzardPPC users with 040/25 CPU will experience significant more speed. Moreover now the so called "wheel mouse" is supported and visual effects have been enhanced.

The innovations are:
  • Speed. The new version is up to 25% faster depending on the hardware. Especially users with relatively weak hardware (BlizzardPPC with 040/25) will notice a significant speed-up.
  • Mouse Wheel support. Heretic II now supports mouse wheel adaptors that map to rawkeys 122/123 (newMouse etc.).
  • Improved visual effects: "new" Permedia 2 additive blending mode (requires Warp 3D V4.2) (see before and after screenshots) and full Voodoo 3 support.

Project: AmigaFFE status
I would like to give a short update of the topical status of the AmigaFFE-project. Due to the fact that the release of the source code of Frontier-First Encounters (quotation: "..when it's done.") I would like to suggest a small project that deals with Frontier, too.

Maybe some of you know the game "Elite - The New Kind". It is a Elite version, that looks slightly better then the original Amiga version. The Allegro-library (used for the new version of First Encounters, too) is used for the programming of this game (for Windows). Here is my question: Is out there any interest in a port of this game (for practice)?

Furthermore, I get an email containing the info that Alive Mediasoft already had a running version of First Encounters that was never finished. Does someone out there have any contact information (e-mail, snailmail) of one or more former employee of Alive? Because I would like to ask them if we could finish this version.

Additionally:
The analysis of the actual situation will be seperated in two parts:
  1. Technical information concerning the game (shortkeys, engine, and so on)
  2. Some kind list about what we can do and what we can not concerning the port.
In the near future I will put some impressions for example pictures on my page. I will publish the soundtrack (MIDI and maybe MP2 version, too.

If you did not hear anything about the AmigaFFE-project here are some information: The AmigaFFE-project wants to port the game Frontier First Encounters, the successor of Frontier Elite II, to the Amiga.

This is an "Everyone's Invited"-project. That means that everyone is welcomed to join the team wether he/she wants to program or 'just' write the documentation. Further details are available at the title link. (ps) (Translation: sk)

Developer tool: CVS V1.11.1p1
Version 1.11.1p1 of the AmigaOS port of 'CVS' has been released. This update among other things fixes another Enforcer hit, which occurred along with an error message when using the internal SSH client.

Beside of this bugfix two more new features have been added to simplify working with cvs and ssh a bit or to make it more compatible with the prior version.

Jens Langner advises any developer to get the latest version at the following and well known address: http://amcvs.light-speed.de/.

During the following days this update should be on Aminet, too. (sd) (Translation: mj)

'Paradox Software' and 'Hartwerk' are two more companies allowing us to make their software available for free at AMI Sector One. Some of the games and applications, which now can be legally downloaded, are 'ST-Protector', 'War Zone', and the translation software 'Translate It'. Beside of these there is also Ed Scio's futuristic flight simulation 'Armour-Geddon'. Various interesting public domain games and new Emerald Mine clones round out this little update. Workbench: Scalos Beta V40.8
On 4. August 2001 beta version 40.8 of the alternative Workbench 'Scalos' was released. This release in particular fixes several bugs and makes it easier to handle the different preferences formats of Scalos.

Now Scalos tries to load the latest format, at first. If not available it falls back to prior formats, but always uses the latest format for saving.

All changes can be taken from the history.

You can report bugs using the bug report page.

Website: Amiga University updated
OK. We've done quite a bit of work since the last update, and while that was too long ago (mid May, blame too much work travel! :) we've got some cool stuff up there now for you!

1) New Pages. Not only have we gone back and re-verified links throughout the site (we are up to ~2,000 links, probably only about 15% of those are 'within site') we have added new AmigaDE, Draco, and TVPaint pages as well as a huge slew of REBOL links to the 'rebol on the web' page in our programming section. There are many other new links throughout the site in its various sections as well, please let us know if we missed *your* site. If it has to do with Amigas and especially learning how to use them, enjoy them, etc., we're all ears. :)

2) Site Mirrors and Archives. We are pleased to announce that thanks to Bob Maple, Paul R. Santa-Maria and Marc Albrecht we have been able to 'preserve' three Amiga sites otherwise having been taken down, namely 'Zip Drives and the Amiga', 'Motorola 68000 Resources' and the former Amiga-software.com website. Take a look from the 'site archives' link off the home page.

Even cooler is the generosity of David McMinn, who is allowing us to mirror his 'Blitz Basic 2000' site. This is still an active and growing site, even though at the moment he's changing servers on the home site in the UK, thus not all his content is online at the moment but that will soon change. Check it out!

3) Downloads. As you may or may not already know, we've had Bars & Pipes available for download for a long time, probably almost a year now. But we are pleased to announce that due to the generosity of NewTek, (who released Amiga TVPaint a while back as freeware), TVPaint is also now free to be distributed by other sites as well. We have created a ~4MB zip archive containing all you'll need to install this premier Amiga paint package (you'll need UnZip from Aminet as well as a graphics card, however, to use TVPaint - UAE/Amiga Forever users can also use it because they employ Picasso96 within the emulation). To help thank NewTek for their continued support of the Amiga community, if you use a PC, buy a copy of Aura, their newest and incredibly powerful paint/graphics package - you won't be disappointed.

In sum, come on back and check us out, we've got lots to offer and hopefully will have another large site update next month to announce. In the meantime, enjoy! (sd)
