Hollywood: GUI plugin RapaGUI 2.2
Press release: Airsoft Softwair is pleased to announce the immediate availability of RapaGUI 2.2. RapaGUI is one of the most popular Hollywood plugins as it can be used to create graphical user interfaces for a variety of systems (AmigaOS, Windows, macOS, Linux and even Android). RapaGUI always uses the native controls of the respective operating systems so that the GUIs do not feel like a foreign body. GUIs can be easily defined via XML files.

Version 2.2 contains mainly bug fixes, but also a few new features such as support for the arm64 platform of macOS. RapaGUI 2.2 is now available for free download from the official Hollywood portal. (cg)

AROS: Demo version of word processor Final Writer 7.1
Nine years after the initial announcements, the word processor Final Writer is now receiving its first update since 1997: The new rights holder Timothy "terminills" Deters is offering free demo versions for AROS-68K, AROS-x86-64 and AROS-x86 ABIv0 (registration required).

The most important new features in Final Writer 7.1 are:
  • New , MySpell-based real-time spell checker, compatible with OpenOffice dictionaries, for example. This function is not available in the demo version.
  • Native PDF export (libharu)
  • AmigaOS compliant localization
  • Printing via FTP/IPP
  • Updated support for RTF
It is not yet clear when the full version of Final Writer 7.1 will be available. Deters has held out the prospect of ports for AmigaOS and MorphOS in the past, but has always emphasized that the AROS version should be completed first. (cg)

Platform game: Test version 5 of "Dr. Dangerous"
Inspired by the Amiga classic Rick Dangerous, hoogames has released another playable test version of "Dr Dangerous" (YouTube video), which was created with the Scorpion Engine (amiga-news.de reported). The new version 5 offers the following changes:
  • Ladder bug fixed (you can no longer go through the walls)
  • If you stand on the ladder you no longer die when you press the fire button
  • Level 8 a few changes
  • If you enter the level code and then complete a level and die, you stay in the level and don't have to repeat the previous level (it worked during testing)
  • Layers deleted in some levels
  • Fixed bug in level 5 (it's now easier to get over the platform - I played it all the way through and now there should be no more problems)
  • Level 8-12 balance in the game changed
  • Changed start screen level code to enter code (should be easier to understand now)
  • Changed in-game music (not the final version and there will be more music tracks in the game)
  • changed some codes
  • Changed memory allocation of some enemies (more space in memory and hopefully less problems)
  • New enemy added (bat)
  • Added level 15 and 16
  • Fixed some bugs
  • If you find a level code you get an extra life - so look for them all and write down the codes ;)
This version has not yet been tested on a real Amiga, but only on an emulator. The developer asks you to report any errors. (dr)

Logic game: Untangle V0.5
Grzegorz Kraszewski is in the process of writing the logic game Untangle for the Amiga. The player has a number of dots in front of him, which are connected by lines and cross each other. The aim of the game is to untangle the lines by moving the dots so that no line intersects another.

The developer has set itself the following goals:
  • Game should be system friendly, working in a window on Workbench, using only documented APIs.
  • Minimum system version is 3.0.
  • RTG (graphic cards) should be supported out of the box. Without dedicated code paths and explicit opening of RTG libraries, if possible.
  • Would be nice if it works on MorphOS, AmigaOS 4, AROS using M68k emulation built into these operating systems.
  • Should be comfortably playable on stock A1200, stock A500 is not a Holy Grail, but why not.
The game is being developed on an Amiga 1200 with 68020 @ 28 MHz and 64 MB Fast RAM. It currently has over 100 levels, a highscore list and level selection. (dr)

Computer history: User manual for the Amiga 300
A user manual dated November 1991 for the computer designed as the Amiga 300 but ultimately named the Amiga 600 has appeared on Archive.org, contributed by Randell Jesup. Photos of this scanned manual can be seen on the Commodore International Historical Society page. This manual, entitled "Introducing the Amiga 300", provides an insight into the functions and compact design of the official successor to the Amiga 500. The sudden and secret renaming by Commodore's top management shortly before the market launch remains an interesting chapter in the history of the Amiga. The subject was taken up by ex-Commodore UK boss David Pleasance in his book "Commodore: The Inside Story" (30 untold stories about a computer giant) in the section "The Amiga 600 Debacle". (nba)

IntuitionBase

AmigaOS 4: IntuitionBase updated
George 'walkereo' Sokianos has extensively updated the IntuitionBase website, which provides an overview of AmigaOS 4 compatible software and hardware: it is now based on what he considers to be one of the best CMS available, Drupal 10, which makes the site easier to manage and at the same time offers a high level of security.

A new section called "Featured Software" has been added: it lists the software that will help the end user to have the best experience with their new system, in an easily accessible way. All applications are logically categorised based on their use and have all the information about who created them, where to find them, how to buy them or how to support the developer. Furthermore, software and hardware lists are now searchable, and there is also a global search function.

Online chiptune and music module player: Pixeltune
Back in 2014, Tomás Pollak, a journalist, developer and musician, released a first version of Pixeltune: a web-based player for chiptune and video game music that builds on a large collection of music that has been carefully archived over the years and indexed for quick and easy access. The sound is generated directly from the original files by emulating the sound chips that were actually used to render these files in the good old days.

He started his project because he loves music and MIDI and nerdy chiptunes on the one hand, and because he's a big fan of the demo scene and tracker music on the other. They would all "bring fond memories from the early days of the Internet-- the era of guestbooks, webrings and beautifully ugly pages, when it was a crazy place filled with weird and cool stuff!"

But also, there's a secondary goal and that is preservation. A big chunk of the music you'll find was hosted on websites that no longer exist. He wants to help preserve the history of sequenced music, and to honor all the incredibly talented composers whose creations still blow our minds decades later.

Under the title link you can find more than 250 pieces of Amiga music. Playing tip: Xenex (xenextitle.mod)! (dr)

Puzzle game: AmiBrixx v2.3 for all Amiga systems
Jörg 'Evil' Renkert has released version 2.3 of his puzzle game AmiBrixx. The player's task is to eliminate the stones stacked on the board by clicking on groups of the same colour. In doing so, the tiles above fall down and form new groups. The game ends when no more groups can be eliminated (amiga-news.de reported).

The new version was released due to some server updates. Some minor bug fixes and speed improvements are also included. The author welcomes feedback and is open to suggestions and requests for improvement. (dr)

Game Construction Kit: RedPill 0.9.41
RedPill, developed by Carlos Peris, is a game construction kit written in Amiblitz 3.99, which allows the development of games from various genres (e.g. Agonman). RedPill (YouTube video shows improved support of moving platforms) is compatible with AGA and ECS, the "player" for playing the finished creations requires a total of 1.5 MB RAM. Jens 'Farbfinsternis' Henschel has written a tutorial.

All changes of updated version 0.9.41:
  • Image to tiles now can open a large image containing a map, extract its tileset, and optionally recreate this map in the current level.
  • Image to tiles checksum has been improved to avoid duplicates.
  • Now you can select the spritesheets to use for each Level, saving some valuable Chip Memory.
  • The used spritesheets in the level can be automatically calculated by the editor.
  • In Tileset Menu, Image to tiles can now be used to open a large image with a game map. The routine will generate all the tiles for this map, and will give the possibility to generate the level map as well.
  • In Objects Menu, in the Advanced section you can define the maximum speed you want your object to move. Useful for example, when you do not want your object to fall too fast.
  • Fetch mode Quadruple can now be used with Screen Widths: 320, 288 and 256. Using it will speed up games for AGA Amigas without FastRAM.
  • Added a project named BobPerfTest to be able to check performance with the different fetch modes.
  • Added action trigger Follow Object Free, works as previous one but instead of using 8 directions for moving, movement is smooth vector based.
  • When using Help key or ? button to get screen information, now you can click More button that will open the HTML help with detailed info.
  • The tool to open HTML files can be defined in the REDPILLEditor Icon.
  • Project ex_mapenemies has been updated win new graphics and using the new Follow Obj Free trigger.
  • ECS parallax now supports vertical movement.
  • Red CD32 button is now equivalent to normal Joypad first button.
  • Vampire can usage can now be detected using the condition trigger Processor. It will return 8 for 68080.
  • Fix Triggonometry startup issue that caused Trig funcions to not work.
  • Fix weird behaviour when static objects are deleted from the level.
  • Fixed issue when using Inv Speed triggers.
  • Giving more info about the errors in Level Properties screen.

Using image files and discs in PC drives: DiskFlashback v1.0.2
Developer Rob Smith has written DiskFlashback, a convenient software for Windows 10/11 (64-bit) that enables PC floppy drives to read and write image files such as ADFs (Amiga Disk Files) during operation. It also allows you to process real discs in Amiga or Atari format, with the appropriate hardware extensions. To use it, you need the FloppyBridge plugin, which in turn requires additional hardware (amiga-news.de reported). Now he has released version 1.0.2 of the software. Changes:
  • Sped up the Greaseweazle track reading speed by almost double
  • Sped up the Supercard PRO track reading speed by almost double
  • Small speed up for DrawBridge reading too!
  • Sped up disk writing as well!
  • Added special message for people just trying to run the DiskFlashback EXE and wondering why it doesn't do anything
  • Added new "Clean Drive Heads" option for real floppy drives (cleaning disk required)
  • Re-arranged all physical drive related commands into its own menu
  • Added option to toggle the auto-starting up the system tray icon with Windows
  • Changed how new versions of the application are detected to hopefully get around some previous false positives
  • Mount physical Amiga HD/Memory Card disks as drive letters (OFS/FFS/PFS only)
  • Can now detect Amiga hard disk partitions when RDSK block is not on the first block (can be upto 64 blocks in)
  • Better / quicker cooldown if disk is removed from physical drive while its being read
  • Added support for DSK (MSX) files as they're basically FAT12 PC disks
  • Fixed a bug with some DMS files where the total number of cylinders was incorrectly read
  • Fixed potential re-entry bug from aborting some operations and turning off the drive motor
  • Fixed issues with SuperCard PRO board not seeking to the correct track [FloppyBridge]
  • Fixed an issue where some SCP files wouldn't load at all
  • Fixed some issues with some dual-format disk images not showing both parts
  • Fixed issues with Tri-format disks (they're actually dual-format really)
  • Fixed an issue with dual-format disks where number of heads was incorrectly used for PC/Atari side
  • Fixed issue where re-reading bad Amiga sectors didn't work properly
  • Fixed a strange seek issue when ejecting real floppy disks
  • Fixed issue with some dialogs disappearing behind explorer after message was shown
  • Fixed an issue where changing file attributes (Amiga) caused the Readable/Delete attributes to become unset
  • EXEs etc are now digitally signed

Book: German edition of "The Making of Prince of Persia" now available
Jordan Mechner is an internationally renowned game designer whose best-known work is probably "Prince of Persia". Mechner recorded the creation of this global hit in his memoirs, which he wrote down during development and published in 2020 (amiga-news.de reported). The book has now been published in German, translated and edited by Stephan Freundorfer: "Jordan Mechner: Die Erschaffung von Prince of Persia – Tagebücher 1985-1993" (original title: The Making of Prince of Persia) invites the reader into the wild, golden 8- and 16-bit era and lets them participate in the restless life of a young creative who is looking for his place between screen and pixels – and becomes famous. Blog: The Effect of CRTs on Pixel Art
The Swedish technology nerd and software developer Carl Svensson has published a new article entitled "The Effect of CRTs on Pixel Art" on his website datagubbe.se. In it, he discusses how CRTs smoothed out the hard edges and block structures of old video game graphics through their blurring and artefacts such as scan lines and colour overlays. Svensson also points out that modern techniques such as anti-aliasing and dithering, which contribute to smoothing and colour blending, enhanced the visual experience on CRTs, which is often misunderstood when pixel art is displayed on modern flat screens. To visualise these effects, Svensson also shows images from games and applications for the Amiga, including Ruff'n'Tumble, Monkey Island, Silkworm and Deluxe Paint IV. (nba)

Gimmick: Humourful assessment of a GitHub account
To "roast" someone means to mock and belittle them in a humorous way and is usually meant in a nice way. This tradition became particularly popular in the USA through the "Dean Martin Show" (see Wikipedia article). The user 'codenoid' has now applied this concept to GitHub accounts: all you have to do is enter the username of an account on the website set up under the title link and you will receive an amusing summary of the activities and projects (including translation into the desired language) with the help of AI.

We have been reporting on Richard Körber's projects, who also has a GitHub account, for some time now. He has kindly agreed to let us take the piss out of him here... Thank you! :)

"Richard Körber, huh? "Open Source developer and Java professional"? More like a wannabe coder stuck in a retro time warp! Your "little private computer museum" sounds suspiciously like a last-ditch attempt to gather all the discarded tech you couldn't bear to part with. With 71 public repos, it's impressive how you've managed to wring out so little attention – a whopping 0 stars on your computer museum? That's some real dedication to mediocrity!

Your stargazers count speaks volumes: maybe a grand total of 501 on "acme4j," but let's be honest; it's not like you're pulling in celebrity-level applause. A whopping 57 followers? It seems like half of them must've hit that follow button on accident! Java enthusiast? More like Java aficionado of obscurity. And what's with the retro obsession? Are you trying to resurrect the 80s or just desperately holding on to some nostalgia? Get it together, Richard - it's time to evolve from your basement's computer graveyard." (dr)

Video: Image and music editing possible with the A600GS?
YouTuber 'Proteque' took a look at the now available A600GS computer (amiga-news.de reported), particularly with regard to image and music editing. His conclusion: he has high hopes for the future and is happy to support the project, but currently it was not in a state he can enjoy it. In his opinion, the computer is not intended for the "casual gamer", but for Amiga enthusiasts. What bothers him most at the moment are the slowdowns in the desktop environment due to the 68k emulation and the fact that OctaMED does not start, but this should be fixed this week.

As Amiga Kit explains in response to our article, four system updates have been released since the video was published, which have fixed most of the bugs. OctaMED, for example, is now running smoothly again, as a problem with the stack of fonts in the disc font library has been fixed. (dr)

Amiga Kit: A600GS available / Paolo Cattani games pre-installed
Press release (PDF): Cardiff, 4th August 2024
Famous Amiga games developer, Paolo Cattani (interview from 2019) has provided his classic Amiga games to be pre-installed on the new A600GS computer.

Virtual GP and Thunderhell are installed ready to play on the A600GS. Existing A600GS users can download a free update to install the games to the games menu.

Virtual GP was sadly Paolo's last production for the Amiga range of computers shortly after Commodore's bankruptcy. He wanted to to contribute to the Amiga games scene so started the development of Virtual GP (codename AlienF1). VGP would have to accomplish two missions: on the one hand, it would implement a fast 3D engine aimed at hi-specification Amigas (AGA and 68030 required) featuring gouraud shading, texture mapping, billboarding, curved surfaces and all the things that were "hot" at those times; on the other hand, it had to be the most realistic simulation of a Formula One car available on the Amiga.

Thunderhell is a classic shoot-em-up game. The game is an horizontal scrolling (with three levels of parallax), fast paced shoot'em up full of enemies, bullets, explosions and all the bells and whistles that one could expect from a game of that genre.

Matthew Leaman, MD of AmigaKit Ltd commented on the collaboration: "We are thrilled that Paolo has agreed to include his great games with the A600GS. We are grateful for his support of our project."

Tutorial: Creating a Kickstart disk for the Amiga 1000 with WinUAE (German)
Already in mid-July Domingo Fivoli has described how to create a Kickstart disk for the Amiga 1000 in his german Commodore blog at the title link. For this he used the emulator package Amiga Forever and the Amiga Explorer, whereby the kickstart data was read from an Amiga with GrabKick, transferred with CrossDOS and finally written to a disk image file using the program WriteKickDisk. Game announcement: Video about "Dungeonette - The New Adventure" (update)
Adrian Cummings (Mutation Software) has published a short video at the title link on the current state of development of his game "Dungeonette - The New Adventure", which is announced to be released at the end of the year for AGA Amigas including the Amiga CD³².

In a forum the author explained: "It will run on stock Amiga AGA and CD³² with 2 MB Chip-RAM and of course [on THEA500 Mini] etc. It is a hybrid of many games in reality and has some roots in Diablo for sure but also many others as a hack & slash dungeon crawler. Just for the record... Originally the basic game was written for Apple Watch many years back and then also a version was released for Spectrum Next back in 2017/18. This version is all new just for Amiga however and only resembles those previous titles in name only."

Update: (18:54, 07.10.24, dr)

The release date has now been specified as Friday, 6 December 2024. Since the video under the title link is no longer availale, this Video introduction was done by the German YouTube channel 'MagisthansSpielekiste'. (snx)

The Python program Pymod, released in version 1.1.1, uses PortAudio (via PyAudio) to connect to the respective audio hardware. The emulation of ProTracker's behavior goes so far that even its bugs are optionally taken into account when playing music modules.

Debbie Harry portrait by Andy Warhol and picture files resurfaced
Following the discovery of further computer graphics on the Amiga of pop art icon Andy Warhol ten years ago, one of the presumably only two copies of the Debbie Harry portrait that have been printed back then has resurfaced now, created at the presentation of the Amiga 1000 in 1985 - the other one is owned by the Blondie singer herself.

Jeff Bruette, a Commodore technician at the time, who lives in the US state of Delaware and taught Andy Warhol how to use the computer, is going to sell the painting that has been hanging on his wall for almost forty years now. It also includes an original floppy disk with pictures created later by the artist. (snx)

AmigaOS 4: File manager "Dir Me Up" V4.00
Press release: Five years after its last update (amiga-news.de reported), the modern explorer for AmigaOS 4, Dir Me Up, is back in version 4... with more than 130 new features, optimizations and fixes! More than ever, it will be your faithful companion to explore, copy and transform your data...

Dir Me Up now has a new graphic theme, Retro, which smells of the original Workbench. The standard theme has been completely redesigned and redesigned accordingly. And of course, AISS aficionados will still be able to use it. The software is now also available in Portuguese, making it accessible in nine languages!

Dir Me Up 4

Dir Me Up now has a cache to store thumbnails in order to greatly speed up the display of photos, even in very high resolution (such as 4000x3000 for example). You can of course choose the reserved disk space, purge it or disable it if necessary. Other optimizations have been made to the icon view to make it even more pleasant to use. The internal viewer has also been extended with zoom or full-screen display options. As you can see, the visuals have greatly improved!

Dir Me Up 4, Viewer

Copying has also been optimized, especially for small files: the gains observed range from 20 to 50%. The replacement confirmation window in the event of a conflict now allows you to replace a file only if it is more recent. Favorites management has been improved with the ability to give a personalized name to each location. The preferences window has been extended and redesigned.

The list of new features is far too long to mention them all here, but you can read an (almost) exhaustive list under the title link.

Dir Me Up is, of course, compatible with the brand-new A1222+ from A-EON Technology!

As usual, this update, free for all registered users, has been put online. To install it, just run Dir Me Up.

You can download a demo allowing (only) browsing or purchase the full version for 19,99 Euro. Dir Me Up, enhance your Amiga! (dr)
