File manager: Tasko (update)
"Tasko" written by Andreas G. Szabo offers any number of directory windows you like. Between them, you can copy files with drag&drop - for each new directory window, just start Tasko once again. The current release is called a "release candidate", which probably includes bugs. So far you cannot delete empty directories.

Tasko

Tasko requires AmigaOS  3.0 or higher. The author recommends at least AmigaOS 3.5. The screennotify.library is supported, that means if the Workbench is supposed to be closed or opened, Tasko immediately responds.

Download: Tasko_v1.0rc6.zip (176 KB)

Update: (03.03.2016, 06:00, cg)

Meanwhile the sixth "release candidate" is available. According to Andreas G. Szabo "now the files list is only refreshed when the dir reading is ready. However you can turn back on the live-refresh in the menu settings. I also changed the live-refresh method and it perhaps now performs better." Additional changes:
  • Only one lister is read/refreshed at a time.
  • Initial bookmarks feature added, drag dirs or volumes into the bookmarks list (turn it on in the settings menu).

Review: Netsurf under AmigaOS 3 (Update)
If nowadays users of classic Amiga hardware are going to surf the Internet, until recently they could only choose between iBrowse and A-Web. But both web browsers have not been updated since 2006 and 2011, respectively. As long as you are only intending to browse websites like amiga-news.de or the Aminet, then these two are sufficient - but it is quite impossible to access more complex websites like yahoo.de. Our editor Daniel Reimann has examined the new alternative called Netsurf: more ... (cg) (Translation: dr)

Amiga developer Dave Needle died
According to RJ Mical on his Facebook site, Dave Needle has died. After their employment at Amiga Corporation, they both worked as developers of the game consoles Atari Lynx and 3DO.

Dave Needle did belong to the original hardware developers of the Amiga. Despite of circulated love-hate relationship between him and Jay Miner's dog Mitchie he later pointed out to his relevance of the computer development. In the past year he did participate in the Amiga 30th anniversary party (picture). (snx) (Translation: dr)

The Aminet team writes: A lot of older freely distributable software is still missing from Aminet. Big Book of Amiga Hardware: Amiga 2200 (A1000jr) added
On the Amiga hardware reference website "Big Book of Amiga Hardware" the A2200 has been added. The website wrote: "A few months after the cancellation of the A1000+ and A3000+ it was decided the company should attempt to salvage the A1000+ technology and build a lower spec ECS-based machine. The project was developed under the codename 'A1000jr', an unofficial title intended to annoy Bill Sydnes."

The Amiga 2200 had an ESC chipset, which for reasons of costs only contained Zorro-II slots. They are on a Riser card, other extension boards had to be plugged in horizontally. All in all four different versions were planned which should differ in the processor as well as in the number of Zorro-II slots: A2200 (68020, two slots), A2400 (four slots) and analogical to that the A3200 and A3400 with a 68030-processor. The case of the A2200 was similar to the case of the Amiga 4000. (snx) (Translation: dr)

Toni Wilen is working on WinUAE adaptions for AmigaOS 4
The WinUAE programmer Toni Wilen currently is working on an improved integration of AmigaOS 4 in WinUAE. The goal is to adapt as many parts as possible of the native infrastructure (uaehf.device, UAEGFX) provided by the emulator to the PPC operating system - and to give up slower emulation of real hardware e.g. the SCSI-controller of the Cyberstorm, the Picasso 4 graphic board or network and sound cards which were needed up to now.

A first and early trial version Wilen now has made available. It is possible to include directories as harddrives and HDF-images are supported. Some more details:

Currently supported UAE devices:
  • Directory harddrives
  • uaehf.device (hardfiles). HD_SCSICMD is NOT supported yet
Supported but not tested:
  • uae.resource
  • Some "uaelib" functions
Not yet supported (lots more work needed):
  • uaegfx
  • bsdsocket.library
  • uaenative.library
  • clipboard sharing
  • uaescsi.device
  • uaenet.device
  • virtual mouse driver
  • on the fly directory harddrive changes
  • And everything else that was not mentioned
In order to enable the trap system, in the configuration file the line "uaeboard=full+indirect" has to be added. The new features has not been completely optimised and therefore are not faster than the previous SCSI-emulation. Additionally a computer with at least three processor cores is recommended.

Toni Wilen emphasised that he himself is not intersted in an improved PPC-emulation and that therefore donations for this project would be the greatest motivation. If you are interested in further adaptions of WinUAE to AmigaOS 4, then a donation via Paypal is very welcome.

Hint of the editorial staff: So far Wilen has not said anything about the limitation of the RAM - AmigaOS 4 currently recognizes maximal 128 MB RAM under UAE. In theory this limitation could be raised to 256 MB, if a CyberstormPPC would not have been emulated (due to the SCSI-controller) and the emulator could present itself as BlizzardPPC .
