AROS-Distribution: Update problems with Icaros 1.1.4, Icaros Live-DVD
According to the developers of the AROS-distribution Icaros there are some problems if you want to update to the previously published version 1.1.4 automatically.

The developers recommend to download the update and to unpack it under a different operating system. Then the ISO-file can be installed without any problems under AROS with the "from ISO"-option of the LiveUpdater.

There is also a bootable "Live"-DVD of the distribution which is called "Icaros Desktop LIVE!" and which does not require any installation on the harddrive but which can be installed additional to an existing Windows-installation on a different partition. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Software news: SabreMSN 0.57, MemoryGauge 1.1 (Update)

Instant Messenger: SabreMSN 0.57

James 'jahc' Carroll has published a new beta version of his MUI-based MSN-Messenger SabreMSN for AmigaOS 3/4 and AROS. Changes in SabreMSN 0.57:
  • Fixed "challenge string" calcuation issue with certain sized challenge codes.. no more disconnections after a minute of being online [...]
  • Added automatic reconnection when disconnected. Configurable values.
  • Commented out file transfer stuff, because it was too buggy to use and was causing confusion I think. The GUI looks more handsome now.
  • Bugfixed Group Chats a little.
  • Changed the layout of the top of the chat window. Let me know if you guys like it.
  • Text labels at the top showing: display name, email address, and personal messages if one is being displayed. Also, you can copy to the clipboard from it.
  • Away status is shown next to the display name at the top of the chat window, and it tells you when the person went offline if they go..
  • Made the tab buttons so they dont have to occupy as much space as the text inside them i.e. the text can be cut off inside now if the window is too small for the tabs, and it isnt forced to be a large size anymore. (did that make sense?)
  • Oops, renaming contact button doesnt work anymore.. the setting isnt remembered when you reconnect. I think that particular rename command only works for the current session. I think the MSN client is supposed to keep a local copy on the hard drive, then rename the contact when it connects and retrieves the contacts list. Hmmmmmmm.
  • Weird error: For some reason I had commented out a Contact List display name copy, and I cant remember why.
  • Changed "Add a contact" string gadget to use BetterString.mcc so that OS3 users can paste contact addresses into it

MorphOS: MemoryGauge 1.1

MemoryGauge is a "Screenbar-Plugin" which is added to the title line of the Ambient screen and which shows the current usage of memory. MemoryGauge requires at least MorphOS 2.0.

Update: (20.08.09, 16:00, cg)

By now MemoryGauge 1.1 has been released, fixing a severe bug that prevented proper use on most systems. (cg) (Translation: dr)

Scanner-Software: OS3-Port of SCANdal

Michal "zukow" Zukowski has published an AmigaOS 3-version of his scanner application SCANdal. Zukowski is working on a port of new scanner drivers included in the SANE-project.

Amiga Future: New full versions online

The download section of the Amiga Future homepage was completed with some new full versions. For example Blast Squad, Excellent Card Games, Mikro Mortal Tennis, Starbirds and Zerberk. Additionally several descriptions and screenshots were updated.

WinUAE: Preview to next version

As usually the developers of the well-known Amiga emulator WinUAE gave a short preview to the next version. The update will be published in one or two months and among others will include the following changes:
  • Huge A500 cycle-exact emulation compatibility improvement. Previous "approximate cycle-exact" is gone. It is time for REAL cycle-exact emulation! Image of my poor Amiga 500 used for CE mode compatibility testing.
  • CD32 drive emulation improved.
  • Built-in WASAPI sound API support.
  • Less annoying real harddrive safetycheck.
  • Bugfix: Programmed refresh rate modes had bad sound. (1.6.1)
  • Bugfix: Command line parsing special cases fixed. (1.6.0)

IRC-Client: WookieChat 2.12 Beta 8

Instant Messenger: SabreMSN 0.56

James 'jahc' Carroll has also updated his MUI-based MSN-messenger SabreMSN which is available for AmigaOS 3/4 and AROS. Changes in version 0.56:
  • "contact has added you to his list, add them to your own contacts list?" stuff was broken in last release. Just crashed.
  • Header messages are ignored now. So irrelvant stuff will be filtered out from the chat. This one goes out to Kicko! hehe. Let me know if it goes okay.

Real-time strategy: Exodus under AmigaOS 4.1

"crack" described in a guide how to get worked the real-time strategy game Exodus: The last War under AmigaOS 4.1.

Update of the arcade game BOH

Simone Bevilacqua has updated the commercial arcade game BOH:
  • makes the game run natively on Linux (requires an x86 CPU, SDL 1.2 and SDL_mixer-1.2);
  • avoids the restart of the whole program upon theme change (very useful when playing in full screen, as the monitor does not need to re-sync);
  • adds themes randomization options;
  • adds the "USE ENHANCED WEAPONS" option (makes killing enemies easier);
  • slows down the blinking of the automapper direction indicator;
  • adds video mode suggestions;
  • fixes a minor bug in the zoom selection handling (in rare cases it could cause an illegal memory access);
  • fixes bad centering at 4x zoom (a couple of parentheses were missing);
  • links the AmigaOS version to the latest SDL;
  • links the Windows version to a fresh build of the custom framework (by mistake an outdated framework had been used with the consequence that, on some machines, input handling was partially broken);
  • includes some graphical retouches to the themes "castle" and "warm";
  • adds synopses to the phases of the mission "tougher and tougher";
  • updates and improves the user's manual;
  • improves some translations;
  • some other changes.

Additionally a Linux port of BOH was published. (cg) (Translation: dr)
