Update to accelerator board project 'Buffee'
The open source accelerator board project "Buffee" started by Renee Cousins and Tim Wacker consists of an adapter board which is connected to the processor socket of an A500, A1000 or A2000 and has a SoC of type Octavo OSD335x-SM inclusive 512 or 1024 MB RAM (amiga-news.de reported).

In their latest blog entry the developers has announced that a beta charge of 60 Buffees been ordered. Unfortunately the alpha version of the board did not perform well enough. Therefore in version 0.5 of the board a 'GreenPAK' SPLD (simple programmable logic device) was added: By that it is "ensured that on this version every signal that is not bound to the SPLD, is bound to the PRU (Programmable Realtime Unit) which is almost as good as the SPLD, just not quite as fast".

Changes of version 0.5 of the Buffee project:
  • Flash SPI data lines were swapped (this is possible to fix on the alpha)
  • Made Flash SPI lines length matched to ensure good data up to 104MHz
  • Power rails changed to support down to 2.7V (alpha will brown out at 4.5V)
  • JTAG had no system reset only target reset (makes debugging annoying)
  • CLK pin may work either as an input or output (improved TF1200 support)
  • A few extra passives that weren’t needed were removed
  • Switched to lower-profile headers to make Buffee the same height as a 68000
  • And added the GreenPAK for some simple programmable fun
  • Fixed the silkscreen to align with the BGA orientation
The developers offer four options for users already having the alpha board:
  • 1. You can fix the data lines and the alpha will still run in the TF1200.
  • 2. We can send you a new PCB and you can try and swap it yourself or source the CPU.
  • 3. You can send it back and we’ll try and replace the PCB for you.
  • 4. We can send you a TSSOP GreenPAK and you can try and bodge the alpha yourself.
The developers recommend taking the first option. And explain it: "Yes, it’s possible to remove and replace a BGA chip, but on the SAME chip, it’s likely to result in catastrophic damage to the inner components of the CPU. And while the GreenPAK bodge is in theory possible, it would be fragile and very difficult to do correctly as at least one of the pads from the BGA is required and not brought outside of it’s footprint."

Finally they report that due to "all the chip-shortages, we’re actually just barely coming in under the MSRP with almost no margin left. Also, we’re stuck with a six week build time as there are some lead times we have to absorb." (dr)

ALS 1.94: Screen overlay
Simone 'saimo' Bevilacqua has provided "ALS", the AMOS Layers System, a way to layer individual screens of AMOS Professional, specifying the order, colors and degree of translucency (video). The whole thing is written in AMOS and is therefore available as a source code library. Due to his work on the puzzler Follix, some changes were also made in ALS with version 1.94:
  • Added ALS_CHECK_LAYER_INDEX[].
  • Added ALS_COPY_PALETTE_SEGMENT[].
  • Added ALS_CREATE_LAYER_AS_CLONE[].
  • Added ALS_SET_LAYER_A_AND_COLORS_FROM LAYER[].
  • Made check on layer index in ALS_DESTROY_LAYER[] and ALS_MAKE_LAYER_DESCRIPTOR[] more robust.
  • Removed check on layer index from ALS_GET_LAYER_DEPTH[].
  • Simplified ALS_OPEN_FILE[].
  • Updated manual.

Game Construction Kit: RedPill 0.8.10
RedPill developed by Carlos Peris is a Game Construction Kit written in AmiBlitz 3.8, which can help developing games of diverse genres - see our little review of two games. Recently the boxed edition of the platform game "Putter" has been released which also has been developed with RedPill. An ADF image of the game is available as well. RedPill is compatible to AGA and ECS, the "player" requires a total of 1,5 MB RAM.

Changes in version 0.8.10:
  • Start button added to Play the game not from the current level but from the initial game level.
  • Level background menu is now in Properties tab in the Level Editor.
  • New action trigger Change Icon to change an object icon.
  • When editing an object with parent, parent object is now displayed.
  • After a new project is created paths are initialized and point to the project folder.
  • BlockBreaker example has been added.
  • FIX: Not enabled objects are not visible anymore in the level editor screen.
  • FIX: When setting the frame manually in Animation screen.
  • FIX: Tile On Screen trigger was not working properly.

Archive manager: RNOArchive for all Amiga systems
Developer 'jPV^RNO' has added another Hollywood application to his 'RNO family' (e.g. PDF viewer RNOPDF, FTP(S) client RNOXFER or DTP application RNOPublisher): RNOArchive is a graphical archive manager which can can extract, modify, and create archives based on the XAD system. RNOArchive also can create ZIP files. As the author wrote "writing to other formats relies on separate Shell commands, and their availability and compatibility in the used system."

RNOArchive has the following features:
  • Reads and extracts all archiving formats supported by the XAD system
  • Write and modify support for ZIP and LhA archives
  • Write and modify support for Tar if MorphOS SDK is installed (experimental, but supports Amiga file attributes)
  • Batch extraction for multiple archives
  • Automatic sub-directory creation for batch extracted archives
  • Archive browsing and file viewing
  • Filetype editor for configuring file viewers
  • Intelligent drag & drop support
  • Recursive adding of files/directories
  • Create new directories inside archives
  • Delete files and directories
  • Handles UTF-8 filenames in archives
  • Extensive file selection options
RNOArchive is available for AmigaOS 3/4, MorphOS and AROS. (dr)
