Jump'n Run: Vampire - Curse of the night
"Vampire: Curse of the Night" is a jump'n run game developed with Backbone. It has three levels each with a final enemy. In total 12 different enemies appears, for which some hundreds of animation frames have been drawn - the biggest enemy has 80 frames.
'Vampire' is available in three diffferent versions, either as ADF-image or as HD-archive: Additional to the final versions v2, there is also v2-speedup, from which the status panel was removed and thus has remarkably more speed. Besides, also the original release ("v1") is still available. This is not so much polished compared with the other version and has a shorter second level, but has instead a lower level of difficulty. All versions at least require a 68020-processor and 2 MB RAM.

Status update: FPGA graphic board MNT VA2000
On a1k.org, Lukas 'mntmn' Hartmann summarized the current state of development of his FPGA-based graphic board VA2000 (we reported). Meanwhile the final prototype (photograph) is on the way to him. When the board has been received, he will start implementing a Z3-mode. Users, who have preordered the board, can choose between immediate delivery (current firmware) or delayed delivery (Z3-enhanced firmware).
As FPGA now the LX25 instead of the originally planned Spartan-6 LX9. Besides, there is also a socket board having 36 pins, which can be used for extensions.
The firmware currently supports 8, 16 and 32 Bit modes and can scale up the screen 2x or 4x. For the mouse pointer there is also a hardware sprite.
In order to avoid any legal issues, Hartmann has written his own P96-header and used them to develop a driver. He also is in contact with one of the former CGX authors, who is going to release a cleared Driver Development Kit for CybergraphX, but before needs to get an A3000/A4000.
The VA2000 is an open source project. All sources and documents are available in a Github repository under a free licence. Hartmann wants to thank all suporters and especially all those who preodererd a board. They are the reason to be motivated.

AmigaOS 4: Daniel Müßener about the current status of Warp 3D Nova (Update)
In late march, A-EON announced a new 3D driver system called Warp 3D Nova, which is supposed to replace the badly outdated Warp 3D. Since an Amiga specific solution doesn't make much sense, programmer Daniel 'Daytona675x' Müßener (Wings Remastered, Wings Battlefield) was hired to port the OpenGL variant OpenGL ES 2 to AmigaOS 4/Nova.
Even at the time A-EON announced Nova, Hans de Ruiter - the programmer responsible for the new system - tried to give a more realistic overview over the current state of things. In an extensive Interview with German Podcast Boingsworld, Daniel Müßener is voicing his concerns now and describes the problems he encountered during his attempt to port OpenGL ES 2 to Warp 3D Nova.
It became obvious pretty soon after starting the project that things like Stencil buffers or Mip-Mapping were not implemented in Warp 3D Nova yet, but on inquiry he was assured that these features were already being worked on. After spending quite some time on porting OpenGL, more and more details came to light that suggested to Müßener that the whole system was in pre Alpha state at best. Even simple things like the 'Hello World!' equivalent of OpenGL didn't work, were not implemented or simply crashed. Among those were essential features like defining variables or the 'Discard' command without which transparency effects are pretty much impossible. Müßener describes the current status of Nova as "only extremely few things are actually working".
The programmer acknowledges that developing a 3D driver system like Nova is a complex process that takes a lot of time, but he complains about the poor communication - he feels like he's been "abused as a cheap Alpha tester". In some cases - like a function for identifying a variable's type, a feature Müßener considers indispensable - he claims to have spent weeks doing a lot of persuading to make the other party agree the feature should be implemented. The whole system was allegedly far from the state he was promised, which resulted in him having to spend a lot more time porting OpenGL ES than the two or three weeks he initially scheduled.
Nova, which was released as part of the Amiga Enhancer package by now, is not ready for end users, according to Müßener. At least one of the function prototypes in the released header files is faulty, which implies nobody ever tested that function since programs using it can't actually be compiled. Müßener "hopes" that no external programmers tried to port a game to AmigaOS using Nova, since that would have been a devastating experience.
Müßener says he stopped working on OpenGL a week ago and will "not touch the code again". He's willing to give it another go if Nova reaches a more mature state, but "[A-EON and me] would have to discuss the exact terms first".
Update: (05.07.2015, 18:15, cg)
In the meantime, Daniel Müßener has published a counterstatement on his personal blog, criticizing our news item as tainted und complaining that we only picked the negative statements from his interview. (cg) (Translation: cg)

AROS: Results of user survey 2016
Under the title link Krzysztof 'deadwood' Śmiechowicz has published the result of a survey among AROS users, who weekly use the operating system. 54 persons participated.
The results of the survey show that 20 % uses AROS more than ten hours a week, mainly for browsing, programming and multimedia. All those who "spend less time with AROS, (you) spend it mostly on OS Tinkering but also, surprisingly, on Programming!". More than 60% use a "native x86 installation of AROS, either on real or virtualized hardware."

Workshop: upgrade an Amiga 'Tank' mouse with microswitches
Commodore mice - especially the famous 'Tank' model - are decades old and their switches aren't getting any better with age. Even if the mouse buttons still work, it often takes a constantly increasing amount of force to activate them or you never know if the mouse will react to your click this time. Amiga user 'Redskull' has fixed this problem by replacing the switches in his mouse with new microswitches, the following is a step by step guide showing what he had to do to upgrade is input device:

Remove the two phillips head screws near the cable end. Turn the mouse over, lift the end near the cable slightly. The top half will then slide backwards. Warning: Take care not to snap the clips at the rear of the top half.

Remove the two phillips head screws securing the PCB to the bottom half. You may find it easier to work by removing the cable - to do that, desolder the ground strap (see big red circle in next picture) and unplug the 8 pin connector.

Desolder the offending switch(es). The following pictures only show the left mouse button being replaced, but the principle is identical for the right mouse button of course.

These are the suitable PCB mount microswitches. The metal levers are not required.

If your switches have the metal lever attached, remove it by squeezing the end with a pair of needle-noze pliers.

Clip the leg furthest from the switch actuator with a pair of clippers or a side cutter.

The switch is ready to install now.

Drill two 0.7-1.0mm holes as shown. With the type of switch used here, the hole furthest from the edge of the board should be roughly inline with two existing holes, the other hole should be slightly offset. This may vary depending on the brand of switch you buy. Measure the hole distance up to match your switch.
Make two trace cuts as shown, isolating the land around the hole that you just made furthest from the board edge.
Scrape away some of the insulation around both holes.

That's what the new holes look from the top side of the board.

Insert the new microswitch into the new holes as shown.

Make sure the sitch is quite flush against the board before you solder it in. Make a link as shown by the red oval, a simple solder blob should suffice.

The actuator of the microswitch is roughly about 3mm higher than the original when installed, so the plastic stem behind the mouse button will need to be shortened to match.
Remove only so much that you can close the mouse (with screws) without activating the switch. It's better to trim in small increments and test a few times, than take too much off in one go and ruin your mouse.

Diagnostic tool: DiagROM 0.6
DiagROM is a diagnostic software which is meant to be burned in an EPROM by the user and replaces the regular Kickstart-ROMs of an Amiga. The software does not require any timer, IRQs or something like that and therefore can be launched on very broke computers and there can check the hardware to identify problems. DiagROM uses the serial port to export information or menus.
Currently DiagROM is available for free. Later there will be also programmed ROMs for a little fee. The source code will be released as well.
