Cross compiler/Assembler: Calypsi 5.8.1
"Calypsi" is a collection of compilers and assemblers that run under Windows, Linux and macOS and can generate code for various retro platforms - 6502 and 68000 processors are supported, among others. Although the project is hosted on Github, the source code is not freely available and use of the tools is only permitted for private purposes.

Changes in version 5.8.1:
  • Assembly sections using the same name as a compiler data section now sets the corresponding type qualifier. This makes the auto placement in the linker also work for assembly projects.
  • Switch statements with a single statement body (not a composite) caused an internal error.
  • Correct value in a compound literals casting the address of an external variable to an integer of fewer bits caused a linker range error.
  • 6502/65816: Correct spill handling which in some cases could result in an internal error, typically illegal instruction related to using the register.
  • 6502: Add a mechanism to restore zero page pseudo registers to allow safe return to Commodore 64 and MEGA65 BASIC. To enable it, place the following line somewhere in your application #pragma require __preserve_zp. Refer to the Target specifics chapter in the user guide for more information.
  • 6502: Correct a problem in the peephole optimizer that for multiple successive spill/fill operations with push/pull in an extended block in some situations could rearrange the order of operations with the rest of the code.

Ján Zahurančík, (Philipp Lonke) (ANF)

Workbench distribution: AmiKit 12.7
Press release: This was a tough one! Months of work, countless interruptions, frustration, and exhaustion - but we did it! Huge thanks to Wiisoldier, Philipp Lonke, and everyone else who contributed to this update!

Why was this so challenging? Because this update spans multiple platforms - Windows, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi, PiStorm, and the Bootable USB edition! And for Mac and Linux, there are two different versions for each (one using Wine and another built on Amiberry). On top of that, every single update archive required platform-specific tweaks, as it also enhances the core engines. In total, this release updates 8 different platforms, letting you enjoy your Amiga with AmiKit wherever you choose.

Now, let's dive into the highlights:
  • New Core Engines: WinUAE, Amiberry, Emu68
  • CPU-A, a new system analyzer
  • Online Currency Converter with DOpus GUI
  • Tune Finder that lets you enjoy tons of music streams!
  • There are also plenty of updates to existing software, including AmigaGPT 2!
  • Plus, we’ve placed a new WHDLGames folder on your desktop, featuring the familiar wizard from the Bootable USB edition. Just download pre-installed WHDLoad game/demo archives, drop them into the "Downloaded Archives" folder, and let the wizard handle the rest - automagically!
  • Oh, and one more thing - the Raspberry Pi 500 is now fully supported!

AmigaKit (E-Mail)

A1200NG: New photos of the emulator-based mainboard
At the title link AmigaKit has published further photos of its ARM- and emulator-based mainboard A1200NG (amiga-news.de reported). The latest and probably final revision of the hardware, which corresponds to the Amiga 1200 mainboard in terms of dimensions, has a sound mixing circuit and a CDDA feed, as well as a connection for a 12-volt power supply and the option of connecting SATA and IDE drives to internal USB headers.

Greaseweazle technology for reading and writing various floppy disk formats has been integrated. On the software side, AmiBench is used as the desktop interface, as with the A600GS, and FinalWriter 7.2 will be one of the included application programs - which A600GS owners will receive as a free update. Different operating systems and ROMs can then be used on the A1200NG. (snx)

Obligement: Interview with Simon Neumann (Alinea Computer)
At the title link, David Brunet has conducted an interview for Obligement with the graduate engineer Simon Neumann, managing partner of the Amiga dealer Alinea Computer and partner of the publisher Look Behind You.

In it, he reports that he is able to make a living from these two ventures and announces that the Octodapter - an extension that allows up to ten joysticks to be used for appropriately designed games - will definitely be launched on the market this year. As a publisher, he is disappointed with the sales figures for the Amiga 3.2 Reference Manual, with the German edition in particular falling short of expectations. (snx)

Amiga emulator: Amiberry-lite 5.8.3 and Amiberry 7.0.2
Amiberry and Amiberry-Lite are Amiga emulators.
While Amiberry is based on the current WinUAE version and is recommended for all platforms that are faster than RPI4 - including all macOS and x86_64 platforms - Amiberry-lite is based on WinUAE 4.4 and is recommended for slower hardware (up to RPI4), or if JIT for ARM is to be used (Which version should I pick?).

Amiberry now has been updated to version 7.0.2 and Amiberry-lite to version 5.8.3, both of which offer bug fixes and improvements. (dr)

AmigaOS 4: VideoVortex - GUI for searching and watching YouTube videos
Video Vortex is a graphical user interface for YT.rexx for searching and viewing YouTube videos. YT.rexx is a script that provides direct video and audio links from YouTube URLs. VideoVortex, on the other hand, saves the user the cumbersome and tedious task of editing various configuration files and offers a clear and easy-to-use user interface that was written with Hollywood and the MUIRoyale plugin.

With the help of the full version of the media player "Emotion" (amiga-news.de reported) the videos can be played directly. Thomas 'TearsOfMe' Kölsch uses the alternative YouTube frontend Invidious for the search. The author has already gained experience in dealing with Hollywood in his previous projects such as AmigaTText or A Little Remember Game.

Even if some users have already installed YT.rexx on their computer, it is recommended to download it (again) when starting VideoVortex for the first time. Emotion should also have already been started once so that an "APPDIR:" entry can be found. (dr)

Sokoban conversion in Ultimate Blitz Basic 2: Soko-Ban
Based on a game originally available for MS-DOS with 53 levels, Pawel 'tukinem' Tukatsch had published a Sokoban prototype in October 2022, which he had written from scratch in Ultimate Blitz Basic 2 (amiga-news.de reported). He has now updated it (video) as follows:
  • we can at any time during the game switch the color scheme between the original color palette from the PC version of CGA, and the 32-color version
  • the game code has been refined so that the game runs on the weakest Amiga 1000 (with additional fast RAM)
  • all animations from the original have been faithfully ripped
  • we have the possibility to create a tournament for 2-4 players with the possibility to save the game
  • we have a board editor for levels 51-99
  • we have atmospheric music playing in the background by E!ghtBM

Run'n Gun: new playable demo for "Operation Steel Rain"
"Operation Steel Rain" is a Run'n Gun for AGA computers, developed with the help of the Scorpion Engine. Inspired by mecha-style games such as "Assault Suits Valken" (SNES) or "Ranger-X" (Megadrive), the game brings a platform shooter feeling to the Amiga screen. The updated demo version offers the following new features, among others:
  • a new enemy capable of walking and firing
  • jetpack now has a limited duration/overheats, requiring the player to land to recharge (or dissipate the heat)
  • Shield Mechs cause damage and push the player, it needs a better implementation

Individual Computers: known customers can preorder ACA1240/1260
Press release: In recent years, the start of production and sales of the ACA1240/1260 had to be postponed again and again. Last week the time had finally come and we opened pre-orders. Not all of the card's features have been fully developed yet, which is why all models are currently being offered at a reduced price of EUR 59.50 (incl. VAT). As soon as these features are available, they can be retrofitted free of charge with a simple flash update.

The ACA1240/1260 is available with different processor versions at speeds of up to 100 MHz and always comes with 256 MB RAM. A sophisticated cooling system with temperature-controlled fan ensures a stable processor temperature even when overclocked. All technical details were already published in our support forum at the end of October.

Since there have always been market participants in the Amiga sector who have only bought rare hardware with the intention of making a profit (so-called "scalpers" who offer the goods at inflated prices after selling them out), we will only sell the AC1240/1260 to known customers in the first few months. To view and order the ACA1240/1260 in our store, please create a user account and send us an e-mail so that we can activate your account. We hope that this way the small number of 68060-Rev.6 processors can be distributed fairly in the Amiga community and also customers who cannot afford the purchase price immediately have the chance to buy one of these coveted pieces. If you have previously purchased your iComp hardware from dealers, please let us know the Waranty IDs of the products - we will also use these to unlock you. (cg)

      • Improve grid:
        • Add number spinners
        • Add "From Brush" button to Grid requestor to get grid size from the brush
        • Shift-G sets grid offset to cursor
        • Added ExclBrush pref so a brush grabbed while in grid mode is one less pixel in both X and Y directions

Sound editor: ProTrekkr 2.8.1 for AROS and MorphOS (update)
ProTrekkr is a tracker program that combines a software synthesizer with a traditional sample tracker. It can mainly be used to create electronic music (such as psytrance, trance, goa, hard acid, IDM, chip, techno, jungle, etc.) for small intros, demos or games. Version 2.8.1 has now been released for AROS (and other systems). Changes:
  • Channels LFO carriers are now properly reseted at playing start.
  • Channels LFO data can now be sent to the channel filter cutoff, volume and panning.
  • Added a channel LFO frequency scaler.
  • Added these effects:
    • 43: Set channel LFO frequency.
    • 44: Set channel LFO frequency scale ratio.
    • 45: Set channel LFO amount to send to the channel filter cutoff.
    • 46: Set channel LFO amount to send to the channel volume.
    • 47: Set channel LFO amount to send to the channel panning.
  • Fixed a very old NoiseTrekker bug where LFO values sent to the channels filter were lost because they were too big and clamped.
  • Fixed a nasty regression that occurred in 64 bit compiled versions.

Video: PiStorm68K - Dual 68000 CPU & PiStorm with Physical Switch Demo (update)
The PiStorm68k can accommodate any Raspberry Pi of the generations 3 and 4, and contains an integrated WLAN module and a real-time clock as well as a DIP64 slot to accommodate a 68000 processor. Using a simple switch, it is possible to switch between the emulated and the real CPU.

Ranko Rodic has now published a second video on his project at the title link, which will be made available open source. It shows the aforementioned switching between the two processor types. He has currently ordered the production of 100 PCBs of version 1.2 of the PiStorm68k.

Update: (08:08, 02.02.25, snx)
In the original version of this news item, it was erroneously stated that "any" Raspberry Pi could be used. However, only 64-bit models below generation 5 can be used, whose GPIO lines are controlled via an external chip for the first time, which enables a higher throughput but causes higher latencies. Action game: "Operation Steel Rain" playable demo has been released
"Operation Steel Rain" is a new run'n'gun action game in development for AGA Amigas. Inspired by mecha-style games like "Assault Suits Valken" (SNES) or "Ranger-X" (Megadrive), the game brings platform shooter action to the Amiga screen.

The project, created with the Scorpion Engine, is still in its early stages of development, but the recently released demo already allows players to run, jump, fly and even destroy some enemies with a mech. The demo shows the first approaches to the planned gameplay mechanics, even though it is currently still quite simple, but still promising.

The demo version of ‘Operation Steel Rain’ is currently available for AGA Amigas as an ADF file and for the A500 Mini as an LhA archive. (nba)

Games That Weren't

Amiga Games That Weren't: Darkland
"Darkland" was an advanced action role-playing game developed by New Deal Productions in the early 1990s. The game was intended for the Amiga, but never reached commercial release.

Thanks to the website "Games That Weren't", which specialises in unreleased games, new insights into the development of "Darkland" are now available. The website recently discovered extensive material, including screenshots, concept art and detailed information on the planned game mechanics. The project was heavily inspired by titles like "Shadow of the Beast" and promised a mix of combat, puzzles and exploration. According to "Games That Weren't", it is unclear whether a version of Darkland was released for the Atari ST.

Although the game was never released for the Amiga, the newly discovered materials provide a fascinating insight into what might have been. (nba)

Demoparty: Lovebyte 2025 (15-16 February)
On the weekend of 15-16 February 2025, the virtual demoparty "Lovebyte" will take place on Discord and Twitch - an event dedicated entirely to so-called sizecoding, i.e. programming with as few bytes as possible. Under this year's motto "Blind Date", all competition entries will be presented anonymously so that the works can be experienced independently of their creators.

The event includes exciting intro competitions in size categories from 32 bytes to 1024 bytes, as well as other competitions such as Tiny Executable Graphics, Bytebeat Music and Wild Showcase. In addition, seminars, a Bytejam, DJ sets and intro shows are offered. The party is open to all interested people and for all platforms, including Amiga. (nba)

Video: Interview with "Ports of Call" developer Rolf-Dieter Klein
Rolf-Dieter Klein set new benchmarks for manager simulations with "Ports of Call", developed by him and Martin Ulrich and released in 1987 under the Aegis label. In the YouTube video interview with Magisthans Spielekiste, Klein provides insights into the development of this ship management game, the challenges faced during development and the compromises made during the creation process.

Of particular interest are the concept art images, which have not been shown before and are being exclusively presented in the video. The video also offers a glimpse of possible new versions of the game.

AROS: Sound editor ProTrekkr 2.8.0
ProTrekkr is a tracker program that combines a software synthesizer with a traditional sample tracker. It can mainly be used to create electronic music (such as psytrance, trance, goa, hard acid, IDM, chip, techno, jungle, etc.) for small intros, demos or games. Version 2.8.0 has now been released for AROS (and other systems). Changes:
  • Added a function to negate the current palette.
  • Added two functions to rotate the current palette on the left or right.
  • Re-arranged bitchbiker.ptk and added it into the official list of modules.
  • Changed the behaviour of the single step mode, plays only stops when enter (or return) key is depressed and only the current pattern is played (press Left Shift to go into song mode).
  • Added a function to transpose a range of instruments.
  • Patterns modifications functions are only active when edition mode is on.
  • Transposition functions now keep track of last used instruments to be able to transpose relevant notes used without instruments.
  • Stopping step mode will keep edit mode intact.
  • Sample "Maximize" (Max) is now called "Normalize" (Norm) in samples editor.
  • More visual feedback for currently played sample in samples editor.
  • Added the option to show/clear leading zeroes digits in patterns.
  • Added patterns sliders edition mode (check manual for explanations). Note: This mode can be quite CPU intensive.
  • Fixed various bugs in patterns edition.
  • Channels VU meters were drawn way to many times over each others, fixed.
  • Fixed the audio levels of the channels VU meters.
  • Modified the reverb (should sound better (?)) also added a damp parameter (had to rework some modules due to this).
  • Added effect 2C: Set reverb damp ratio.
  • Improved the volume ramping.
  • Added LCTRL + LALT + HOME / END keyboard shortcuts (jump to top/first track or bottom/last track of a pattern).
  • Added Enter or Return keys for single step play.
  • Fixed channels multi polyphony allocations.
  • Fixed the fullscreen mode switching under AROS.
  • Added an OpenGL executable in AROS distribution (ptk_aros_ogl) for some reason i don't explain it may be slower than the regular one, your mileage may vary.

Audio playback: Interview on the occasion of version 1.0 of AmiModRadio
Shortly before Christmas - after years of almost asymptotically approaching this version number - AmiModRadio 1.0 was released. Reason enough for us to ask its programmer 'Tygre' for an interview.

About the program: AmiModRadio accesses the more than twenty thousand music modules in Aminet, but also tens of thousands of tracks from Haxor.fi, Modland and Modules.pl, in order to download a piece of music, unpack it and play it on one of the playback programs such as AmigaAMP, DeliTracker, EaglePlayer, HippoPlayer, MultiPlayer or TuneNet. A rating function is also included. AmiModRadio is open source, the files are available on SourceForge and BitBucket. Anyone wishing to report bugs is asked to do so via the official bug tracker. Suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

Thank you for telling us more about your project. For a start, would you like to tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm a Breton, born and raised in Brittany, who has lived in Montréal, Québec, for 22 years (time flies!). I received an A1200 for Christmas 1993 (or was it 1994?), but I was already familiar with that awesome computer series thanks to my brother, who had had a C64 and then an A500 before that. Later, he also bought an A4000. I still have my A1200 and the A4000 (although the motherboard suffered from the infamous leakage of its barrel battery).

I used my A1200 all the way to my engineering school in 1998. I had augmented it with a Blizzard 1230 and two external harddisks connected via a ribbon cable sticking out from the A1200 case. Not very pretty, but working very well! In 2000, I bought my first PC (a Dell Inspiron) and I neglected my Amigas until 2009 or something, when I rediscovered the joy of simple computing. :-) I refurbished my A1200 but also started buying other extensions and Amigas. Now, my main Amiga is an A1200 with a Blizzard 1240, a CompactFlash card, an Ethernet card, and other goodies, all sheltered in a beautiful Evo X500 black case.

When did the work on AmiModRadio start?

In the 2010s, I was looking for a project to pick up and improve my Amiga programming and, of course, to use my A1200! I had always enjoyed Amiga music and realised that there was no convenient way to play all the modules in Aminet - the idea for AmiModRadio was born!

How was this idea implemented then?

Early on, I realised that I didn't want to program a new player (I was just not a good enough programmer!) so I decided to use ARexx, which brought many benefits: AmiModRadio can interact with most module players out there! Also, ARexx is very cool and versatile and I miss it on Linux and Windows.

Besides that, AmiModRadio is entirely programmed in C, and uses its own FTP and HTTP/HTTPS code to download modules. I wanted to learn socket programming and the intricacies of all these protocols! It also includes four different user interfaces: textual (CLI) and graphical (ClassAct, MUI, and ReAction), which share the same base code.

I couldn't have developed AmiModRadio without the community's help, in particular, on EAB, who patiently answered my many questions... or helped with translations and testing (in particular 'AmigaSystem'!).

Did you originally have different plans for the project?

Actually, AmiModRadio today is pretty much what I had in mind these many years ago... I just didn't know that it would take me 13+ years to complete. :-D AmiModRadio grew a little bit beyond what I had in mind at the beginning: it uses different tasks, so that the UI stays responsive even during the download and unarchiving of modules, and it has a companion Web server to store/retrieve/display ratings.

Regarding features: is the project finished?

Yes! I'm pretty happy with the state of AmiModRadio now... I actually use it every day on my A1200 or on the FPGA Arcade in the living room (to my daughters' horror! :-p). It is stable, doesn't crash, and doesn't corrupt the system... as far as I see! I'll improve its user interfaces and inner workings, but nothing major should change... Until someone reviews my code and tells me all the things that I did wrong...

Are there any other plans?

Actually, yes! :-D

First, I'd like to complete the reprogramming/conversions of the programs published in Amiga News Tech (ANT) in the 1990s for VBCC. VBCC is an amazing compiler for the Amiga (and not only the Amiga) and the programs in ANT have a lot to teach (me).

Then, I was talking about Linux and Windows above... One thing that I miss from Windows is the possibility of creating shortcuts simply. I'm currently developing WBShortcutMaker (working title!) that would create, in the WBStartup, shortcuts to any program: You would select a program that you'd like to run at startup and, with a click or a menu or something (I haven't figured it out yet), WBShortcutMaker would create a script in your WBStartup with icon and all.

Also, I have kind of abandoned AmiAutoUpdater for a long while, which was my naive attempt at a kind of package manager... or rather software updater! I'd like to take that up again, but first I should try Grunch, which may do exactly what I want (and more).

Finally, I'd like to fix my A1200, which used to host my website thanks to THTTPd, but that recently stopped working: I suspect that the CF card failed but I haven't taken the time yet to investigate! (snx)

Shoot 'em up: Sky Shapers available in a physical box edition
Sky Shapers is a 50 FPS vertically scrolling shoot 'em up from the Norwegian development team Digilicious Nibbles. With three levels and 37 different enemy types, boss fights, weapon upgrades and special weapons, high-quality sound and two levels of parallax scrolling, the game brings arcade flair to the Amiga. Sky Shapers includes an extensive introduction sequence, a bonus point screen and a permanent high score table. The game achieved a positive 88 percent in the December issue of Amiga Addict.

Sky Shapers requires an Amiga with an AGA chipset and Kickstart 3.0 or higher, at least 1877 KB of free Chip RAM, 1 MB of Fast RAM and a hard drive. It is playable on systems with a 68020 processor running at 14 MHz, but a minimum of a 68030 running at 25 MHz is recommended. It can be controlled using a joystick (joysticks with two buttons are supported) or the keyboard.

APC&TCP is now offering the game in a boxed version in its own online shop at a price of EUR 29. In addition to the game on CD, the box contains a printed manual and an A3 poster. With the purchase, a link to the download version is provided. (nba)

Flappy-Bird-clone: Happy Bat 1.2
The skill game "Happy Bat" has been developed by Carlos Zener for testing the high score function of the game development tool REDPILL (amiga-news.de reported). Happy Bat has now been updated to version 1.2, which features new graphics by Jordi Palome and a new music track for the initial level. In addition, executable files have been provided for Amigas with 68000 or 68020+ processors. The game requires a real or emulated Amiga with an AGA chipset.

"Happy Bat" is an adaptation of the game "Flappy Bird". The aim is to make a bat flap its wings by pressing the space bar or the joystick button, thus preventing it from hitting the ground or pillars, and guiding it safely through the level.

Happy Bat is provided both as a LhA archive and in ADF format. It can be downloaded in return for a voluntary donation. (nba)

Amiga Boing (website)

Amiga Boing Blog: Successor wanted
The "Amiga Boing Blog" offers tests of numerous games from the PD/freeware area. In addition, game collections with freely distributable games or games licensed to the operator are compiled, which are already delivered with a fully prepared WinUAE - the user only has to add a Kickstart ROM.

There are also collections in RP9 format, which therefore work optimally with Cloanto's "Amiga Forever" emulator package, and a collection of games that work with the AROS-based Kickstart ROM supplied with WinUAE.

As the blogger will not be able to continue his work in the foreseeable future, a successor will be sought from 2026 on. Plenty of work is available, as there are 3,000 more games ready to be added. (snx)

Do it yourself: CompactFlash adapter AmigaCF for Amiga 600 and 1200
The CompactFlash adapter AmigaCF for the Amiga 600 and 1200 is connected to the internal IDE port not by cable like other variants, but is plugged directly into it instead. In addition, noises are made during access, as a substitute for those made when accessing a real 2.5" hard disk inside the computer.

The AmigaCF is intended for use directly on the mainboard - as it is unbuffered, it is not suitable for use on the IDE port of some turbo boards, i.e. those which require a buffered adapter instead. (snx)

Financing of a Warp3D driver for the PiStorm32 (PI4/CM4) on IndieGoGo
Steffen Haeuser writes at A1K.org (translated): "Warp3D for PiStorm! Until now, 3D games on Amiga computers with PiStorm were limited to software-only rendering solutions, even though a Pi4/CM4 has a powerful 3D chip (Videocore VI). The aim of this project is to change this. Developer Dennis Boon has offered to create a Warp3D.library for PiStorm systems with Pi4 and Pi CM4 for a fee.

With 3D hardware acceleration, you get higher resolutions, faster FPS and more impressive visuals for 3D gaming on PiStorm-equipped Amiga systems. Additionally, it enables porting of games that require 3D hardware acceleration or games that would be too slow in software-only rendering on a PiStorm Amiga." (snx)

AmigaOS 4: New port of the game engine OpenJazz for Jazz Jackrabbit
OpenJazz is an engine that can be used to play the commercial Sonic clone Jazz Jackrabbit (the original files are required accordingly). It was ported for AmigaOS 4 back in 2012 already by Roman 'kas1e' Kargin. Since then, OpenJazz has undergone several additions and has been converted to SDL2 though.

However, in the current version by George Sokianos, the bonus stages are switched off as they lead to crashes. A problem that also occurs on other platforms. (snx)
